Where did we start from?

• Successful setting up of new cross-border rail passenger services within Interreg (2007-2013) and Interreg Italy (2014 – 2020): • MI.CO.TRA. project – rail services along the axis – Villach launched as pilot project on 09.06.2012, in cooperation with ÖBB and FUC; • CROSSMOBY project – rail services along the axis Udine-- launched on 09.09.2018, as pilot project, in cooperation with SŽ. Why? • Venezia Giulia Region is located on the border between Austria () and Slovenia; • In 2004 took place the transferring of functions on regional and cross-border from the Italian State to FVG Region; • The offer of cross-border rail services is still very limited.

Who?

Autonomous Region, as project promoter; • in co-operation with ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG • and with SŽ-Potniški promet d. o. o. The first two meetings among the mentioned partners were hosted in Trieste on September 26th 2019, at FVG Region premises, and in Ljubljana, at SŽ-Potniški promet premises, on October 10th 2019.

Project idea: main goals Activating new rail passenger services between Trieste and Wien/Austria, via three alternative cross-border routes: 1. Trieste - Ljubljana - Maribor - - Wien along the historic route “Südbahn” -Graz-Trieste; 2. Trieste - Udine - Villach- - Wien: extension by 192 km until Trieste of part of the present connections Vienna-Villach-Vienna; 3. Trieste - Udine - Villach - . Extension to Udine and Trieste of the connections Salzburg – CentralVillach. • extension by 192 km • Estimation of 140.000 until Trieste of part of train-km by year (of the present connections which 21.000 in Austria Vienna-Villach-Vienna and 119.000 in Italy) • Journey time: 7 hours approx.

• Extension to Udine and Trieste of new connections “InterRegio” Salzburg – Villach, cadenced every two hours • Journey time: 5 hours

Timing (1)

• The first option is ready to be launched (first train on June 11th) • The contract to be signed between FVG Region and ÖBB Italia finalized in the past months, to be signed on May 21st • Due to the present COVID 19 Pandemic, the start of the services, originally expected on December 12th 2020, with the winter season timetable, was postponed to Spring 2021

Timing (2)

• For the axis Trieste - Villach - Wien, no estimation on starting date was done and no major obstacles have been found; • For the axis Trieste - Udine - Villach - Salzburg , the only constraint is related to the possible estimated start of the service not before 2026 (December 2025), when the new service contract for Austria will be into force, integrating the Mi.Co.Tra. train services.

Funding

Expected co-finacing by the involved partners according to the length of the section in each crossed country, being services to be covered by public service obligations (PSO) according to Regulation (CE) No. 1370/2007.
