COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Promoters and Objectives of the Competition

The first edition of the International Competition is hereby announced.

The promoters of the competition are the Accademia Scarlatti of Palermo and the International Chamber Academy - (founded by the Trio of in 1989) of Duino.

The competition is devoted to and aims to give new impetus to the performance of contemporary music, through direct cooperation between and musician.

For this reason, it will comprise two stages according to the following schedule:

• September 2014: nomination of the winner

• November 2014: preparation and performance of the winning composition in Palermo and Trieste. The winning composer will personally take part in this second stage, preparing the performance of his/her composition

The headquarters of the concert will be in Palermo, as meeting place for members of the jury for nominating the winner.

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

This competition is open to composers of all nationalities born after 31st December 1974.

Participants may submit only one score which must be original, unreleased, never performed, recorded or presented at any other completion.

Participants will have to enclose a signed statement confirming the above requirements with the application.

PROCEDURES FOR PARTICIPATION

Participants will have to write a composition for trio: , violin and cello.

The duration of the composition must be within ten (10’.00”) to fifteen (15’.00”) minutes

Compositions must not make use of electroacoustic instruments or be performeded, elaborated or apmplified, even partly, with electroacoustic, electronic or computer equipment. As far as the piano part is concerned, no modification should be made to this instrument, which may affect its tuning.

The artistic director of the competition is meant to suggest a connection between the music and the other with a focus on . Competitors will therefore have the possibility to take free inspiration from one monuments chosen between the Castle of Miramare and the S. Cita Oratory of Palermo. PRIZES

The Palermo International Composers Competition will award the following prizes:

1. “Palermo Competition 2014” Prize to the winning composition. It consists of a public performance of the composition itself in Palermo and in Trieste, by renowned musicians, chosen among the best groups of the International Chamber Music Academy – Duino. Publication of the composition by the ‘Overplay’ publishing house. 2. Special prize to the composition inspired by the theme “architecture-music”, in case it does not correspond to the composition winning the absolute first prize.

ABSOLUTE FIRST PRIZE

“PALERMO COMPETITION 2014”

The winning composer will be awarded a plaque; travel, and accommodation expenses for staying in Palermo and Trieste for the award concerts will be fully covered.

A few days before the award concert, the composer will be invited to take part in a meeting with the Chamber Music Trio chosen for performing the winning piece. The aim is to have an opportunity of discussing the piece and to enable the composer and the musician to exchange artistic and musical views.

The winning composition will receive the prize and will be performed, as a world premiere, during the award concerts in Palermo on 14th November and in Trieste on 16th November 2014.

The winning composition will be performed also in public concerts by a chamber music group and will be published by the Overplay publishing house.Copies of the composition will be sent to the libraries of the Palermo and of the Trieste Conservatories, to the International Chamber Music Academy and to other national institutions of high -music standing.

Great publicity will be given to the composition through the Competition’s website, the Youtube channel of the Accademia Scarlatti, and the social networks of the International Chamber Music Academy and of the Accademia Scarlatti of Palermo.

SPECIAL PRIZE “ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC

The Overplay publishing house will publish the best composition inspired by one of the monuments mentioned in the present announcement. APPLICATION AND DEADLINES

Participants will have to register by 31st 2014, by sending the following documents by mail to the contest:

1. A copy of the score, anonymous, marked with a motto, without any sign which may lead to identify the participant;

2. The application, drawn up according to the sample enclosed with this Announcement, filled in, signed and indicating the motto to identify the composition;

3. Copy of the participant’s identity document;

4. CV in Italian and/or English, with two recent pictures;

5. Short description and presentation of the composition, in Italian and/or English;

6. You can send together with the application form, an audio file ( MIDI or MP3 format ) of the composition;

Upon receipt of the documents, the Scarlatti Academy offices will confirm receipt by email.

Participants who sent envelopes or documents non corresponding to the above requirements or in different ways than specified above, will not be admitted to the competition.

The Scarlatti Academy mangers will examine applications only, and, by 31st August 2014, will decide whether they are regular.

JURY AND NOMINATION OF THE WINNING COMPOSITION

The Jury will comprise the following five members:

• In case of technical difficulties or obstacles on the part of the Jury members, competition managers will replace them as required, and will post this information onto the dedicated website. • The jury may decide, without need of motivation, not to award any prize. • A first shortlist of scores will be drawn up through a vote on the part of jury members, before the jury itself officially meets in Palermo between 19th-21st September 2014, by means of an evaluation griddle which will be filled in and sent to the email address of the Accademia Scarlatti management. • When scores are assessed by the jury, they will not have any identification signs of the composer, with the exception of the motto. • The decisions following the shortlisting will be published on the web site and communicated electronically to the authors of the compositions. • On 20th September 2014 the winning composition will be identified, following the meeting of the jury in Palermo; the outcome will be communicated by publication onto the site of the Competition. • Organisers of the competition reserve the right to change the date and place of the performance and to ask another Trio to perform it, in case of need. • The prize-winning composition cannot be performed, printed, recorded or broadcast before the award ceremony and first performance. • Organisers of the competition reserve the right to have the prize-winning composition performed as a world premiere and to have it audio and/or video recorded for subsequent live or deferred broadcast, without paying royalties or additional rewards to the author. • The author of the award-winning composition must ensure that any edition of the score on paper, computer or record and any audio or visual recording bear the phrase “Palermo International Composers Competition Winner” translated into the appropriate language. • The artistic directors of Accademia Scarlatti reserve the right to cancel the competition at any time, before the deadline for sending applications, giving notice thereof on the web site. • Organisers of the competition are not bound to return materials sent by participants, and can therefore destroy them. • The decisions of the examining commission cannot be appealed. Submitting an application for participation implies acceptance of these regulations. • In case of controversy, the Italian text of these regulations prevails over the English version. • For controversies concerning the competition, its regulations, participation in the competition and decisions taken by the examining commission, the Court of Palermo has sole jurisdiction.
