The organization of this unprecedented number of activities with a record number of visits was made possible by the regular contributions from IAEA (US$1,703,300), UNESCO (US$373,500) and the Italian Government (US$12,195,000), plus by extraordinary contributions, mainly by the Italian Government, United Nations University, Department for Research Cooperation SAREC of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and European Commission. Numerous other institutions were co-sponsors of the training- for-research activities. !®ft BLAISK STATISTICAL DATA Table 1 and Table 2 show the number of individuals, i.e. visitors, who took part in the training and research activities of ICTP in 1995. The total number of visitors in 1995 reached 4,253 against 3620 of 1994 with an increase of 15%. Out of 4,253, 2,253 (52.97%) were from developing countries against 2,050 of 1994 with an increase of 9%. The total length of stay was 4,733 months (75% accounted for by developing countries). The length of stay by scientists from developing countries increased by 10%. Figures for 1994 and 1995 include the number of scientists present in Italian Laboratories for training and research.     Burnt Store Isles Perimeter Channel Dredge Project The City of Punta Gorda contractor, Brance Diversified, has begun the maintenance dredging of the perimeter channel in the Burnt Store Isles subdivision (work will occur seven days a week as weather and equipment operation permit). The dredge is adjacent to Palermo Drive and will progress north along the perimeter channel to the completion point at Terin Court. Boaters should expect navigational delays and need to exercise caution in the vicinity of the work and may contact the company workers through channel 78 on the VHF radio. The dredge will be located in the perimeter channel and will have up to 4,000 feet of 12 inch discharge pipe leading to the spoil locations. The spoil will be discharged directly into the canal system as required by the State/Federal permits. The first spoil location will be the southernmost basin between Monaco Drive and Palermo Drive which will be blocked by turbidity screens. Homeowners in this basin will need to contact Joost Derijk (952-999-3122), Chris Hays (727-580-2481), or Seth Mayhall (337-793- 6740) to schedule their exit and reentry from the work area. The affected addresses are 800-842 Monaco Drive, 363-375 Portofino Drive, and 5018-5052 Palermo Drive. Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged.

    May 17, 2014 Speech by Prof. Fernando Quevedo, director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP ), on the occasion of the Premio Barcola 2014 ceremony Dear friends, Good morning. I would first like to thank the Barcola Award organizing committee for considering ICTP worthy of receiving a prize which in the past has recognized individuals and organizations who have given a lot to this city. In the next few minutes I would like to tell you what ICTP gave Trieste, but also how important it was for us to choose Trieste as the seat for our institution, and how the city has given us not only infrastructure and institutional support, but also hospitality and friendship. I like to call ICTP a unique model of international cooperation. ICTP is in fact the first, and remains the most important, global institution for research and education in the sciences. The Abdus Salam ICTP was founded with the help of Paolo Budinich in 1964, exactly 50 years ago, under the auspices of the Italian Government and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The research that led to Abdus Salam's Nobel Prize in 1979 was conducted in large part right here in Trieste . Since 1995, the administration of the ICTP has been handled by UNESCO, with a tripartite agreement in which Italy makes most of the financial contribution. Abdus Salam was not only one of the best physicists of the time, he was also a special person in many ways. Born in Pakistan (at the time a British colony), Salam had the good fortune to have his talent recognized from a young age.

Alexis De Greiff* Abstract: This paper can be seen in the intersection between history of 20th-century physics, diplomatic history and international relations of science. In this work I analyze the dynamics of the negotiations to create the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, which took place between 1960 and 1963 at the International Atomic Energy Agency. In contrast to previous studies on the creation of international scientific institutions, I pay special attention to the active role played by scientists, politicians and intellectuals from the host-city, Trieste (Italy). Further, I spell out the historical circumstances that allowed this group of local actors to become key figures in the establishment of the Centre. I discuss in detail their interests as well as the political and scientific environment that eventually catalysed the diplomatic efforts of the Trieste elite. The present paper is also concerned with the strategies adopted by the advocates of the idea to confront the hostility of delegations from several industrialized countries, the Soviet Union and India. A frontier is a strip which divides and links, a sour gash like a wound which heals with difficulty, a no-man’s land, a mixed territory, whose inhabitants often feel that they do not belong to any clearly-defined country, or at least they do not belong to any country with that obvious certainty with which one usually identifies with ones native land.
