4 Hardware and Software Limitations Hardware and Software Limitations

The following section describes hardware and software limitations for your Avid DVD by Sonic application.

General • Project filenames are truncated if the name includes periods. Make sure not to use periods in project names. Avid DVD by Sonic DVD interprets the period as the end of the file name. • Rendering of motion menus may fail if the Virtual Memory settings in Windows is set too low. Make sure the Virtual Memory setting in Windows is set to at least 1500 MB.

Video, Audio, and Graphics • If when playing back burned PAL projects that contain WMV material the video appears jittery, make sure that Field Dominance is set to Bottom Field for the WMV asset in the Properties dialog box. • Importing single-layer Photoshop files with a locked Background may cause an error message to appear stating that “the software necessary to decode the media is unavailable.” To unlock the Background layer in Photoshop, double-click the Background layer in the Layers window, then rename it to “Background” in the New Layer dialog box. This should unlock the layer. • Windows Media 9 video may appear blurred after burning to disc. This blurring can occur because DirectShow, which is used for handling certain file types, de-interlaces WMV files. If you experience this issue, convert the WMV file to a different format (such as AVI) in the editor before importing into Avid DVD by Sonic. • AC3 audio from Compressor can not be imported. The audio has the wrong byte order. You must change the byte order to import the audio. • AC3 640 crashes the application. The application does not currently support AC3 640. Use AC3 384 or PCM instead. • When burning projects that contain MPEG files with MPEG-1 layer–2 audio, the audio will be transcoded. • When you import an MPEG-4 video for use as a menu background, the application reports that it has reached the 1GB DVD menu video allowance, even though the video in the menus is not 1GB. This problem will be addressed in a future build.

5

Authoring • When adjusting the start time of motion menus, sync may appear to be off for video and audio when simulating. However, the material is in sync when played from a burned disc. • Next Frame/Previous Frame controls do not work properly when playing .dvr-ms files in the Preview window. This is due to a limitation of the .dvr-ms file format. The other playback controls work correctly, and so does dragging the playhead. • Inclusion of a manual-advance slideshow causes output to Blu-ray Disc to fail. Manual-advance slideshows are not supported on BD. You must set a time for the slides in your slideshow. • Preview and simulation of some QuickTime files is choppy and appears to be skipping frames. The discs that you output should not display this behavior. • HD video preview is not in sync with audio, or the timeline play head advances beyond the length of the video clip. This error occurs because preview of HD assets requires a more powerful computer and more RAM than preview of standard video.

DVD output • Widescreen that are viewed on a DVD player set to Pan and Scan show no menu highlights. Currently, Avid DVD by Sonic does not provide a 4:3 pan and scan highlight option for 16:9 menus.

Blu-ray output • Menus are pixilated and highlights are not aligned on Blu-ray projects with 4:3 menus. Avid DVD by Sonic creates 4:3 menus at 720x480. When they are blown up on HDTVs, the resulting presentation can be poor. To avoid this problem, build your Blu-ray projects with widescreen menus. • Chapter points added on a timeline are not showing up in BD burns if start time of video is not 00:00:00:00. Change it and you should be able to add chapters to your timeline. • Application fails at the “adding files to DB stage” when outputting a Blu-ray disc. There is either a bad asset in your project or you do not have adequate drive space for temp files, volume and image creation. • Application fails when writing CMF master. Make sure you have .NET 2.0 and QuickTime installed. • Application simply stops at the burning stage when trying to output a BD-R or BD-RE disc. Make sure your BD Burner firmware is up to date. You can possibly get around this by outputting a BD volume or image first, and then burning a disc from that volume or image. • Open DVD does not work for Blu-ray projects.
