Avid Xpress® DV for the Windows® 2000 Professional Operating System Avid Xpress ® DV Release 2.1 Addendum for the Windows® 2000 Operating System Important Information Avid recommends that you read all the information in the Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0 Release Notes and this addendum thoroughly before installing or using any new software release. This document pertains to Release 2.1 of Avid Xpress® DV for the Windows® 2000 Professional operating system. Changes in Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1 In addition to fixed issues, the following changes have been made for Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1: • Support for the Sony® VAIO® notebook • Includes Media 100 Cleaner™ EZ 5.0.3 •Includes Apple® QuickTime® 5.0 Included with the Avid Xpress DV PowerPack: • Sonic Solutions DVDit!™ 2.3.3 • Pinnacle Systems Commotion™ DV 4.0 Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Changes in Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1 2 Release 2.1 Addendum Fixed Issues This section lists some of the software and hardware issues that have been resolved since Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0. ✔ Exporting complex footage as MPEG-1 files sometimes fails. ✔ Video does not play in the righthand monitor (dual-monitor setups). The Matrox® card does not support video overlays in both monitors, consequently, Avid has set the default (or primary) monitor as the lefthand monitor.- ✔ If your network connection is disabled, you receive an Error message when you use the Send To Media Cleaner Pro option: “Error on SendTo(), error code = 10065.” ✔ Attempting to output locked audio source material to a deck that requires unlocked audio, such as a DSR 11, fails. ✔ Menu Handle Resource Problem. The system can handle multiple menu resources at once. A menu resource is the button in a window that, when clicked, will open a menu; for example, the Fast Menu button in the Bin window. ✔ Intermittent crashes when using a multiprocessor system. Fixed Issues Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Release 2.1 Addendum 3 Hardware and Software Requirements Avid Xpress DV requires the following system configuration: • Windows 2000 Workstation Service Pack 1 or 2 n If your system is an IBM® ThinkPad®, you need to install Service Pack 2 or the Service Pack 1 HotFix. For more information, see “Third-Party Issues” on page 7. • Minimum of 256 MB of RAM Screen Resolution Avid requires the following for your system to run the Avid Xpress DV application: • The Screen area setting (in the Display Properties dialog box) set to a minimum of 1024 by 768 pixels • The Colors setting (in the Display Properties dialog box) set to True Color 32 bit (High Color 16 bit for systems with video cards that don’t have 32 MB of memory) • The Refresh Frequency setting (in the Monitor pane of the Advanced settings in the Display Properties dialog box) set to 75 Hertz as your screen resolution n Dual-monitor systems also require a minimum Screen area of 1024 by 768 pixels. n Higher screen resolutions can be used. Screen resolutions are limited by the system’s graphics board and the monitor specifications. Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Hardware and Software Requirements 4 Release 2.1 Addendum Sony VAIO Issues Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1 now runs on the Sony VAIO FX190, FX290, FX109, and the FX209 notebooks. Due to the memory limitations on these notebooks, you must set the Colors setting (in the Display Properties dialog box) to High Color 16 bit to work with Avid Xpress DV. Third-Party Software With Avid Xpress DV, Avid has included third-party software to enhance your videos. To run these applications, follow the instructions on the CD-ROM provided to install the software. On some of the third-party CD-ROMs, online documentation might be provided. n For questions or technical support regarding the various third-party software applications, contact the appropriate vendor. Cleaner EZ Avid supports Cleaner to export to all popular Web formats. You can export to Cleaner in one step by choosing Send to Media Cleaner from the File menu, which then exports a QuickTime Reference movie and launches the Cleaner application. To use Cleaner with your Avid Xpress DV system, you should install Cleaner EZ from the CD-ROM provided by Avid. n The About box in the Cleaner EZ 5.0.3 application states the version number incorrectly. To run this application, you need to register your copy of Cleaner EZ to get your serial number. Sony VAIO Issues Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Release 2.1 Addendum 5 To register your copy of Cleaner EZ: 1. Go to www.media100.com/avid_registration. 2. From the menu, choose the version of Cleaner EZ you have. 3. Choose Avid Xpress DV to tell how you obtained your copy of Cleaner EZ. 4. Choose the Windows platform. 5. Choose your country, and then click Continue. 6. Fill in the registration form. n Avid Xpress DV supports Cleaner 5.0.3 or later. If you have Cleaner 5.0.3 or later installed on your system, you do not need to install Cleaner EZ. Commotion DV (PowerPack Users Only) To register and obtain a serial number for your Commotion DV application, follow the instructions at the Pinnacle Systems Web site: www.commotionpro.com/registration/avid.shtml. Creating a DVD The Create DVD Volume command on the Create DVD pop-up menu burns sequences directly to a DVD-R burner. The Write to DVD command saves the DVD Volume folder on a drive. DVD recordable media can be played back on most DVD set-top players. The DVD Volume folder can be played back on most DVD software players and can be used in DVD Authoring applications. Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Third-Party Software 6 Release 2.1 Addendum Before you create a DVD, Avid recommends that you do the following: Set the project sample rate to 48 kHz before you choose Create DVD from the File menu. • If you use the DVR-S201 DVD-R Drive, use the 3.95 GB Media. • If you use the DVR-103 DVD-R Drive, use the 4.7 GB Media. Documentation Change The following information has changed in the Avid Xpress DV Release 2.0 documentation. Avid Xpress DV User’s Guide Page 6-50 in the Avid Xpress DV User’s Guide states the storage requirements incorrectly. The information should read: Storage Requirements Avid Xpress DV stores approximately 3.5 megabytes per second, 216 megabytes per minute, and 13 gigabytes per hour. These values are approximate. Documentation Change Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Release 2.1 Addendum 7 Additional Notes on Operation Third-Party Issues ➤ The IBM ThinkPad model A21P or A22P needs a hotfix file installed to operate with Service Pack 1. If you use one of these IBM computers, you need to either install the hotfix file or upgrade to Service Pack 2. To install the hotfix file: 1. Insert the Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The Avid Xpress DV Release 2.1 splash screen appears. 2. Click Exit to close the splash screen. 3. In Explorer, navigate to /Installers/Heap_Hotfix on the CD-ROM. 4. Double-click Q275918_W2K_SP2_X86_en.exe The hotfix installs and informs you that your system will be restarted. To install Service Pack 2: Follow the instructions at the following Microsoft Web site: www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks /sp2/default.asp ➤ Exporting to a QuickTime 5.0 file with the pan set to the extreme left or right splits over both channels. This is apparent only on a Dell® Precision Workstation 330. Workaround: Disable the Stereo Wide feature. Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Additional Notes on Operation 8 Release 2.1 Addendum To disable the Stereo Wide feature: 1. Click the Desktop. 2. Double-click the Speaker icon located in the bottom right corner of the Desktop. The Play Control Panel dialog box appears. 3. Click Options, and then choose Properties from the menu. 4. Make sure the Playback option is selected. 5. Click the Stereo Wide option to select it. 6. Click OK. 7. Close the Play Control Panel dialog box. ➤ CD Import might fail due to an Adaptec™ driver problem. Workaround: Install new drivers from the Adaptec Web site. To install new drivers: 1. Go to www.adaptec.com. 2. Click Support, and then click Download Drivers and Software. 3. In the By Filename Search, type aspi32, and click Search. 4. Click aspi32.exe. 5. Click Download, and follow the instructions. ➤ Running more than one application at a time causes errors. Most video applications create a DirectDraw overlay surface, which writes video. DirectDraw allows only a single overlay surface to exist at one time. A video application would have to stop running before a second video applications starts. Workaround: When running both Avid Xpress DV and QuickTime 5.0 at the same time, play the video all the way through to the end in Additional Notes on Operation Part 0130-05031-01 Rev. A Release 2.1 Addendum 9 QuickTime. This allows the appropriate resources to release from QuickTime in order to run Avid Xpress DV. ➤ Using the headphone output on the Sony VAIO inverts the polarity. ➤ If a JVC® device is not running when you arm a track (video or audio) in the Record tool, the JVC device cannot send data to the 1394 FireWire®. When you play from the deck controls in the Record tool, the JVC device plays and displays video on the JVC device; however, you do not see or hear anything on the desktop. If you click Record in the Record tool, you see an error message that there is no signal data.

Fire on the Wire: The IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus Page 1 of 18 Back to Technical Stuff "Show Me" Video Home Copyright © 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 Roger Jennings, all rights reserved. Fire on the Wire: The IEEE 1934 High Performance Serial Bus The IEEE 1394-1995 standard for the High Performance Serial Bus, here abbreviated to 1394, defines a serial data transfer protocol and interconnection system that "provides the same services as modern IEEE-standard parallel busses, but at a much lower cost." 1394 incorporates quite advanced technology, but it's the "much lower cost" feature that assures 1394's adoption for the digital video and audio consumer markets of 1997 and beyond. The capabilities of the 1394 bus are sufficient to support a variety of high-end digital audio/video applications, such as consumer audio/video device control and signal routing, home networking, nonlinear DV editing, and 32- channel (or more) digital audio mixing. Sony's DCR-VX700 and DCR-VX1000 digital video (DV, formerly called DVC) camcorders, introduced in September 1995, were the first commercial products to implement 1394. Subsequently Sony introduced in late 1996 its DCR-PC7 micro-DV camcorder and Matsushita announced in early 1997 Japanese availability of the Panasonic NV- DE3 DV camcorder with a 1394 connector. As of fall 1998, there were about 30 consumer DV camcorder models from which to choose, ranging in street price from less than US$1,000 to about US$4,000, almost all of which have 1394 connectivity.
