For full performance, although other graphics cards might work, Avid Studio Toolkit HD supports the following graphics card for Windows: • NVIDIA Quadro4 980 XGL • NVIDIA QuadroFX 1100

Driver versions change frequently. Please go to the online support page at www.Avid.com for the current driver version information.

4 Hardware and Software Requirements

At the time of release, the Quadro4 980 XGL and the QuadroFX 1100 requires the following drivers: • The 67.22 driver for Service Pack 2 • The 53.03 driver for Service Pack 1

For specific information on what graphics card your system supports, go to the Avid Studio Toolkit HD products page at www.avid.com, and click Specifications

For proper operation and performance, some driver settings must be manually changed.

NOTE If you do not have an NVIDIA card installed on your system while you install the Avid software, a dialog box opens informing you that it could not install the NVIDIA DLL drivers. If this occurs, ignore the message and continue with the installation.

NVIDIA Card Not Installed

If you do not have an NVIDIA card installed on your system and NVIDIA drivers are installed, you receive a dialog box informing you that NVIDIA DLL could not be loaded. You can either click through the dialog boxes and ignore the message, or uninstall the NVIDIA drivers.

To uninstall the NVIDIA driver: 1. Select Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. 2. Click NVIDIA Drivers. 3. Click Change/Remove and continue through the dialog boxes. 4. If the problem persists, or the NVIDIA driver was not listed in the Add or Remove Programs, delete the following file from your system: C:\\WINNT\SYSTEM32\nvoglnt.dll

NVIDIA Setup

Restart the Avid application.

Adjusting Graphics Controls in the NVIDIA Settings

If you see the display shift in brightness, contrast, hue, or saturation when you pause and play video, you should adjust the graphics controls in the NVIDIA settings.

To adjust the graphics controls: 1. Right-click the Desktop and select Properties. The Display Properties dialog box opens. 2. Click the Settings tab. 3. Click the Advanced button. 4. Click the Quadro4 980 XGL or the Quadro FX 1100 tab. 5. Click Overlay Controls and adjust the Brightness, Contrast, Hue, and Saturation to settings that work best for your video display. 6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Disabling the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service

The NVIDIA Driver Helper Service is a background program that runs with the NVIDIA Driver installed. This service informs you when an update to the NVIDIA Driver is available. There have been instances where this service causes slow reboots and shutdown with the Avid Adrenaline or Avid Mojo attached. It also can prevent Adobe Photoshop’s Gamma loader from operating and causes color correction settings not to work properly. If this occurs, you should disable the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service.

7 To disable the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service: 1. Right-click My Computer. 2. Click Manage. 3. Double-click Services and Applications. 4. Double-click Services. 5. Right-click NVidia Display Driver or NVidia Driver Helper Service. 6. Click Properties. 7. Select Startup Type > Disable. 8. Click OK.

NOTE Every time you update or reload the driver, this service is enabled again.

Special Notes

You need to know the following information before using Avid Studio Toolkit HD.

Avid Studio Toolkit HD Registration

Go to www.avid.com/register to register Avid Studio Toolkit HD.

Avid FX and Open GL

The OpenGL feature in Avid FX has been disabled by default. If you would like to enable OpenGL, see the Avid FX ReadMe for information on the limitations and how to enable OpenGL.

Avid FX and Dual Monitor Limitations with OpenGL

Due to an issue with the NVidia card, Avid FX crashes if you run the application on a dual monitor system with OpenGL. If you plan on using your Avid FX plug-in on a dual monitor system, you need to do one of the following: • With OpenGL enabled, you must display the Avid FX Composite window on the left-hand monitor. • If you want to display the Avid FX Composite window on the right-hand monitor, you must disable OpenGL. See the Avid FX ReadMe for more information about OpenGL.

8 Special Notes

Avid 3D Supported Resolutions

The following resolutions are supported when working with Avid 3D and Avid Media Composer Adrenaline or Avid NewsCutter Adrenaline FX.

MXF Media Only • Uncompressed (Interlaced and Progressive) • DV25_411 NTSC and PAL (Interlaced and Progressive) • DV50_422 PAL (Interlaced)

Workgroup Support

Avid Studio Toolkit HD is not supported in a Workgroup or Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment at this time.

However, Avid editors without the Studio option is supported as an Ethernet Attached Client (EAC) in an Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment.

QuickTime Support

Avid tested and approved the use of Apple® QuickTime® version 6.5.1.

You must install the appropriate version of QuickTime from the Apple web site. This is not supplied by Avid.

PCI Bus and Avid Studio Toolkit

The FireWire interface for the Avid Studio Toolkit HD cannot be on the same PCI bus segment as any storage devices. Depending on your system, your PCI bus configuration can be different. For examples of different configurations, go to www.avid.com/products/dna.

Avid supports the use of only a single device connected to a FireWire port at a time.

9 FireWire Cable Requirements

The IEEE 1394 cabling standard requires that IEEE 1394 (FireWire) devices be within 14.76 ft. (4.5 ) of the next bus connector. When connecting a FireWire device (drive, camera, or deck), your FireWire cable must not exceed this length. Avid products do not support the use of IEEE 1394 (FireWire) repeaters to boost or extend the signal to the device.

In addition, Avid does not support any type of cable extender or FireWire hub between the Avid editing system connection and the Avid Mojo. If the Avid editing system does not detect a direct connection to the Avid Mojo, the editing system enters a non-operating mode.

NOTE Not all FireWire devices are supported with Avid Studio Toolkit HD. For the most up-to-date information regarding FireWire devices, see go to the Avid Studio Toolkit HD products page at www.avid.com, and click Specifications.

Disable Automatic Software Updates

Avid cannot guarantee the compatibility of automatic updates of Windows XP, or any updates to system software components. For this reason, you should disable automatic updates.

To disable automatic software updates: 1. Do one of the following: t Select Start > Control Panel, and then double-click System t Select Start > Control Panel, and then double-click Performance and Maintenance > System 2. Click the Automatic Updates tab. 3. Deselect “Keep my computer up to date.” 4. Click OK.

10 Hardware and Software Limitations

Hardware and Software Limitations

This section describes hardware and software limitations for your Avid Studio Toolkit HD system. Also see the ReadMe that is included with each individual application.

Avid FX

--> Avid FX supports HD Formats. This version of Avid FX however, does not support 16-bit color depth. Therefore, when you are working with 10-bit media, such as Avid DNxHD 220x, effects processing occurs at 8-bits instead of 10-bits.

--> The system does not let you quit Avid Xpress Pro if Avid FX is open. You must quit Avid FX in order to quit Avid Xpress Pro.

--> When an Avid FX is applied in an SD 24p progressive project, it can create unwanted aliasing on the resulting clip.

Avid 3D

For limitations and tips when exporting AAF and MXF files from an Avid editor to Avid 3D, see the Avid 3D v2.1 ReadMe.

Suggestions for Optimum Performance

Background tasks can interrupt time-critical operations, such as capturing, playing, or rendering. Make sure that background tasks are not running while you are working on the Avid editing system.

For a list that contains suggestions for ensuring optimum performance when working with the Avid editing system, see “Suggestions for Optimum Performance” in your Avid editor ReadMe.
