Chvalčov, Kroměříž Distr., Zlín Region Archaelogical Atlas Of Bohemia – site page 1 of 5 Chvalčov, Kroměříž distr., Zlín Region Prehistoric hillfort (oppidum) Hostýn (1300–50 BC) The prehistoric hillfort and Celtic oppidum of Hostýn is situated in a strategic position to control far-distance trade on the Amber Road. The first mention of the site stems from 1672; the archaeological research started in the last quarter of the 19th century and continues, occasionally, to date. We have evidence of a complicated development of this site, which was founded in the Bronze Age, was used during the Hallstatt Period, turned into an oppidum in the La Tène Period and was sporadically occupied in the Early Middle Ages. Since the 17th century, Hostýn was a pilgrimage site, which is witnessed by a Baroque church on the grassy surface of the upper ward. The hillfort of around 20 ha has an oval ground plan. Today, visitors can still see the mighty fortification system – a 4 m high earthwork on the perimeter (in the south-west up to 8 m high, with the original entrance in the shape of a pincer gate) and a ditch in front of it. It was the 15th BR in Germany and the first of its kind in the Land of Baden-Württemberg. UNESCO BR Schwäbische Alb After a brief preparatory process of just three years, there are now 29 towns and municipalities, three administrative districts, two government regions, as well as Mountain range the federal republic of Germany (Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben) as owner of the former army training ground in Münsingen involved in the BR, which covers Low mountain range 850 km2 and has a population of ca. 150 000. Country Germany Location The low mountain range of the Swabian Alb be- longs to one of the largest karst areas in Germany. In the northeast it continues in the Franconian Alb and towards the southwest in the Swiss Jura. In Baden- Württemberg the Swabian Alb is a characteristic major landscape. For around 100 km, a steep escarpment of the Swabian Alb, the so-called Albtrauf, rises 300 – 400 metres above the foothills in the north. The Albtrauf links into the plateau of the Swabian Alb, which pre- sents a highly varied, crested relief in the north, while mild undulations dominate in the southern part. The Swabian Alb forms the European watershed between Rhine and Danube.

Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality.

UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are· in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality or this reproduction is dependent upon the quality or the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book.

The Early Medieval hillfort in Bojná — Valy, Slovakia, and its defence system, AAC 52:329–351. The hillfort Bojná I–Valy is a part of an early medieval fortification system located in the Považský Inovec mountain range that separates two densely populated settlement areas of Slovakia — namely the valleys of the Nitra and Váh rivers. Judging by the abundance of finds, in the 9th century the 12 hectare hillfort was a prominent seat of social elites. A bronze bell, a collection of gilded figural plaques as well as further symbols substantiate Christian affiliation of the community. The core of the monumental ramparts consists of log chambers with inner grates filled with soil and stones. From the front side, it was protected by a stone shell. Pincer gates had inwardly extended arms and a tower entrance in the front part of the corridor. According to the dendro- chronological data, the fortification was erected in the last decade of the 9th century and shortly afterwards destroyed by a fire. Excavations of the bottom part of the ramparts confirmed, how- ever, the presence of remains of an older construction. In this area, there are also four further hillforts providing finds dated back to the Early Middle Ages.

Archeologia e Calcolatori 31.1, 2020, 97-120 doi 10.19282/ac.31.1.2020.05 INTEGRATED MULTI SCALE ARCHAEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS IN BÉNI MELLAL-KHENIFRA DISTRICT (MOROCCO). THE CASE OF THE FORTRESS OF IGHRAM AOUSSER 1. Introduction The fortress of Ighram Aousser is located 10 km W from M’rirt (on the road between Khenifra and Azrou) and 120 km S of Meknés, on the so-called “mines route”. The fortress lies inside the valley between the mountains of Jebel Aouam and Askar Msaouar. It is protected by a well-preserved circuit of external city walls that reaches even the height of 3.5 m and is composed by regular stones joint with thick grey mortar. The walls were covered by yellow plaster, still visible here and there, decorated with intersecting circles (25 cm of diameter). The whole complex encloses about 27 hectares and measures approximately 736 m in length from E to W and approximately 427 m in width from N to S. At least two gates existed: they are both still visible and it is probable that a third one was opened in the northern side of the external walls. The eastern gate, the one heading to M’rirt, is a typical angle entry gate and was completed by a service staircase to the chemin de ronde above the walls. Inside the circuit of the walls it is possible to identify a higher and fortified area called “acropolis”, whose function is still unclear. In many different areas, inside and outside the walls, many traces of mineral extraction and transformation from pre-historical times (i.e.
