  • SECOND to NONE NCL Round Up
#COYS SECOND TO NONE NCL Round up The Saints last home fixture was against Drighlington, who were out to avenge an earlier season defeat by the Saints. With conditions that resembled a monsoon, it made the handling and attacking for both teams difficult. A try by Simon Topping, and goals by Matt Whitehead looked to have secured the points for the Saints, put a last minute penalty for the visitors ended the game in the draw. The week later, the Saints travelled to Hensingham with a squad that had to draft in Under 18s, Owen Smith and Josh Yarwood into the ranks due to injuries, and player availability. The hosts got off to a great start running in two tries in 15 minutes, before the Saints hit back with a try from Callum Cashin. Moments later, the Saints lost centre Cameron Ladd with a broken hand, and then loose forward Rob Charles, both players couldn’t return to the field. This put pressure on the bench, and with sweltering conditions it made life difficult. The home side led at half time 26 to 4,and it didn’t look Saints could claw themselves back into the game. However, the never say die attitude of the squad saw the visitors score three tries through captain Matt Whitehead, who also converted all three tries, pulled the Saints back into contention. However, as the home team tired, the Saints ran out of time to to claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. Today, we welcome the players, supporters and officials from Wigan St Jude’s, for today’s Kingstone Press NCL Division Two Round Fifteen game. St Jude’s have beaten us twice already this season. In the Coral Challenge Cup First Round, we went down 15-14 back in January, then in the reverse league fixture in May, we lost 41-30. Their recent form has seen them rise to second in the table. Gavin Rodden is the stand-out player, with 6 man of the match awards and 16 tries, whilst Dan Fallon’s 44 goals and 1 try makes him top points scorer. Crosfields have dropped to 8th in the league, having won 6 and lost 7. Last time out, though, it was a tremendous victory at leaders Ince Rose Bridge, 6-25, with two brilliantly taken tries by Nathan Taylor. John Whittaker and Jack Reid also crossed the whitewash, with Jack adding 4 conversions and a drop goal, for a man of the match performance.

The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.
