Oldham St Annes 16 #COYS SECOND TO NONE Saddleworth 22 Oldham St Annes 16 09.02.18 Standard Cup Semi Final As semi finals and derbies go, it doesn’t get much tougher going to Saddleworth Rangers on a cold, wet February afternoon. With Saints boasting a strong squad, Saddleworth opted to go with experience rather than youth in their line up and it was that quality that would be important in the result. The early exchanges were fierce, and Saddleworth certainly ramped up the pressure in the early stages pinning Saints in their own quarter. With ball in hand, Rangers thwarted the Saints attack with some strong defence, pushing them back time and time again. It was relentless, and it would take a great play to unlock the defence. As both sides were toughing it out through the middle, it took until the 23rd minute before the deadlock was broken, and it was the home side who scored in the right hand corner through Sam Hart. The conversion missed, Ranger lead 4 nil. This lead was short lived, as Saints started to get some better field position deep in the Saddleworth half. The visitors made this pay when Billy Barnes went from dummy half and bulldozed his way over the line to plant the ball over the line. Matt Whitehead added the extras, taking the Saints to a 6 points to 4 lead. 7 minutes later, Saints struck again as a chip over the top was collected by Dom Bryan who found Whitehead on his inside, and it was the stand off who romped under the posts to touch down an excellent worked move. Whitehead converted his own try to take the Saints to a commanding, and well deserved 12 to 4 lead. For the next 7 minutes to half time, Rangers had St Annes in an arm wrestle, and the advantage and pressure was exerted by the hosts. On the stroke of half time, Josh Bradbury showed some good footwork to avoid the tackles 5m out from the Saints line. The wily scrum half slid a great weighted kick under the posts where the Saints failed to deal with it, and it took Gareth Morgan the first to react to touchdown. Bradbury added the goal. Half time - Rangers 10 Saints 12. Credit both sides in that first half as it was brutal and unforgiving at times, yet both teams played the game fair and in the right spirits. The team who would win this would be the one who could keep their nerves. On 56 minutes it was the hosts who took the lead once more through a try in the left hand corner through Jeffery. Bradbury added the goal to take the game to 16 to 12. 8 minutes later, it was a beauty, through a half break by centre Joe Hartley found winger Dalloway who showed great speed to accelerate down the left hand touchline. Credit the winger, he drew the defender to find the supporting Ryan Powell and he raced 15m to score wide on the left. Great score which started inside the Saints half. Whitehead missed the conversion to take the game to deadlock 16 all. They say experience is important in sport, and that was the case when Rangers sealed victory on 68 minutes when St Annes failed to hold Michael Coates who twisted out of two tackles and raced towards the line to score from 20m out. Bradbury hit the conversion 22 to 16. Despite the Saints going close in the last few minutes, Rangers defence held strong to take the game and the route into the Standard Cup Final. In the off season, Salford have recruited well and it showed in last Saturdays game when the Roosters were victorious over Dewsbury Celtic, 28 to 22, whilst our boys were on the end of a 32 to 4 loss over at Gateshead. A disappointing result, especially when pre-season has gone well for the team that resulted in some great performances against Wigan St Judes, Waterhead, Saddleworth and Ovenden respectively. Player recruitment has gone well for the Saints and now can boast 60 players registered in both the NCL and NWML team which is a fantastic achievement for any amateur rugby league club, and one we are extremely proud of. The NWML season kicks off next weekend as new head coach, ex Keighley and Oldham centre, Michael Fogerty takes his promoted team to Ulverston hoping to reverse the loss they suffered up there last season. It certainly will be an interesting battle in Cumbria and will be a good indicator on how the team will fair in Division One. Finally, it was great to be a part of the Under 18s as they got their season off to a flyer last Wednesday evening with a 34 to 14 victory of local rivals Mayfield. Enjoy the game. • SECOND to NONE NCL Round Up
#COYS SECOND TO NONE NCL Round up The Saints last home fixture was against Drighlington, who were out to avenge an earlier season defeat by the Saints. With conditions that resembled a monsoon, it made the handling and attacking for both teams difficult. A try by Simon Topping, and goals by Matt Whitehead looked to have secured the points for the Saints, put a last minute penalty for the visitors ended the game in the draw. The week later, the Saints travelled to Hensingham with a squad that had to draft in Under 18s, Owen Smith and Josh Yarwood into the ranks due to injuries, and player availability. The hosts got off to a great start running in two tries in 15 minutes, before the Saints hit back with a try from Callum Cashin. Moments later, the Saints lost centre Cameron Ladd with a broken hand, and then loose forward Rob Charles, both players couldn’t return to the field. This put pressure on the bench, and with sweltering conditions it made life difficult. The home side led at half time 26 to 4,and it didn’t look Saints could claw themselves back into the game. However, the never say die attitude of the squad saw the visitors score three tries through captain Matt Whitehead, who also converted all three tries, pulled the Saints back into contention. However, as the home team tired, the Saints ran out of time to to claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. WALES RUGBY LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVE WEEKEND SATURDAY 28 – SUNDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2019 SPONSORED BY https://www.logic-freight.co.uk/ http://twt-logistics.com/index.php https://topmarkuniforms.co.uk/ https://www.moneysupermarket.com/ http://www.fibreandfurnaces.co.uk/ WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE TRI-NATIONS Updates at http://bit.ly/2mVm3wN Updates at http://bit.ly/2lgFfop WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE TRI NATIONS PREVIEW Wales open the event when they face the Scots on Saturday (1.15pm). The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.
