SECOND TO NONE NCL Round up

The Saints last home fixture was against Drighlington, who were out to avenge an earlier season defeat by the Saints. With conditions that resembled a monsoon, it made the handling and attacking for both teams difficult. A try by Simon Topping, and goals by Matt Whitehead looked to have secured the points for the Saints, put a last minute penalty for the visitors ended the game in the draw.

The week later, the Saints travelled to Hensingham with a squad that had to draft in Under 18s, Owen Smith and Josh Yarwood into the ranks due to injuries, and player availability. The hosts got off to a great start running in two tries in 15 minutes, before the Saints hit back with a try from Callum Cashin. Moments later, the Saints lost centre Cameron Ladd with a broken hand, and then loose forward Rob Charles, both players couldn’t return to the field. This put pressure on the bench, and with sweltering conditions it made life difficult.

The home side led at half time 26 to 4,and it didn’t look Saints could claw themselves back into the game. However, the never say die attitude of the squad saw the visitors score three tries through captain Matt Whitehead, who also converted all three tries, pulled the Saints back into contention. However, as the home team tired, the Saints ran out of time to to claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. President Chairman Paul Neville neil flanagan

Today we welcome Hunslet Warriors to St Annes, who are currently level on points in pole position in National Conference Division Three. We hope that the team, committee and supporters have had a comfortable, short journey over the Pennines.

The Saints have been struggling of late, a 8 all draw out of the jaws of victory three weeks ago against Drighlington, was a disappointment as we felt we had done enough throughout the game to see us through. A week later, a patched up squad with two Under 18s making their senior debuts made the long journey up to Hensingham, losing narrowly at the final whistle.

The NWML team enjoyed a great victory at home two weeks ago against a strong Hindley outfit, and then last week a late comeback fell just short against a young, in form Blackbrook outfit in conditions that resembled the tropics.

Please enjoy the game, respect both teams and the officials, and hopefully we celebrate with two much needed points for the Saints come the final whistle.

“The Sponsors Cabin” as we call it was the brainwave of ex-player Paul Green, the initial idea was to purchase a portacabin for our match day sponsors, but one day as we sat in the office of JCM’s garage surrounded by hundreds of scrap waggon trailers, the idea was born to transform one of the waggon trailers into a sponsors bar.

The waggon trailer was purchased and work began. The driving force behind the work on the cabin was another ex-player Paul Garrett, who not only designed the layout of it but also completed the work with his trusted companion Paul Green.

The overall project was complete in approximately six months and the end product is situated behind the goal at the Shaw Road end. The club cannot thank enough the people who gave up their time to work on it and it just shows you don’t need a lot of money, just hard work and a lot of good lads!

The Saints entertained Hindley, who earlier in the season triumphed in a game that could go down as ‘bizarre’ in terms of how the game was handled on the field. After this game, the Saints aimed for revenge, and despite having to draft in three under 18s’,Max Flanagan, Michael Cashin and Callum Gibblin, the mood was pretty confident in camp. Despite the visitors taking an early lead, the Saints came back and with tries through Cashin, Oliver Bryan, Joe Tindall,,Jordan White, Darren Fletcher with Max Flanagan adding 5 goals saw the home side inflict that revenge winning 34 to 30.

Last week saw the inform Saints take on the leagues form team in Blackbrook at home. In a game where Blackbrook couldn’t raise a team a few weeks previous, the sporting Saints allowed a rescheduled fixture to ensure the game was played. The decisions was proved a correct one as the home side raced into a 10 nil led through tries by Gregg Worrall and Craig Basnett, Max Flanagan adding a conversion. This kickstarted Blackbrook who scored in the corner to get on the scoresheet, despite the protests of a forward pass. A conversion from the sideline pulled Blackbrook into the game, before Gregg Worrall added a second in the right hand corner. Ten minutes later, a tired Saints defence allowed the visitors to score under the posts just before half time to get back into the game. The conversions good, the half time score read 14 - 12.

In the second half, the visitors gained control of the game, and took the score 30-14 with 7 minutes to go. As the game look lost, the Saints gained their second breath and came back into the game with tries from Russ Crawdon and Rhys Wareing and with Flanagan adding both conversion, it set up a pulsating last 90 seconds of the game. With the last play of the game, the ball came left for the Saints, and they had looked to have created the overlap on the left hand side, but the ball was put to ground, and with that, any hopes of rescuing the points. Final score, Saints 26 Blackbrook 30.

ArnoldClark.com A Shortage Of Officials - What Can Be Done To Avoid Extinction

An email was circulated last week from the NCL stating that in 2019 the number cases heard at the Disciplinary Panel for Referee Abuse was to surpass the last two years. Already 33 cases compared to 44 in previous seasons have been heard, and the season is only half way through. Oldham St Annes are a club committed to eradicating this disease that is creeping into our sport, but we have to look deeper at the root causes.

In the NCL and certainly the top two divisions in the North West Mens League, the game has become too fast for just one person to make those crucial calls. With an all time shortage of both referees and linesman in our sport, what is the cause of people not taking up the challenge of officiating? The fear of abuse? Costs? Support? The question that should be asked, what does the sport have to change to resolve this, rather than just pin the blame at coaches and clubs?

The game in the North West is spread out from Chester to Whitehaven, and even over to Gateshead on the east coast, so travelling costs for both clubs and officials is a significant cost, especially the current cost of fuel. Add that the travelling time, and you have the situation where it becomes not worth the while not just for the outlay, but also the increased time away from home. When people feel that the re- wards are not matching the expectations, it doesn’t foster motivation, and the resultant is a negative im- pact when trying to recruit new members. The answer is simple, pay these officials what they are worth instead of the fee they currently receive. Yes, it will increase member clubs costs, and it would have tax implications for both clubs and officials, but if the RFL paid the officials monthly, based on matches attended and charged the clubs annually for the services, then we could be half way there. This would help increase numbers and participation giving more referees , linesman, therefore increased help for the referee on game day to make those crucial decisions and relieve the pressure. By also paying at a more reasonable level, then people are more likely to invest more in personal development which in term builds a stronger, more experienced official.

Another improvement would be to help referees with situational leadership training in where they can be helped and coached in dealing with confrontation and events that could escalate. It’s no coincidence that the referees that have good reputation are not the ones who are the best versed in the rules, but the ones that are approachable to both players and coaches. This is missing so much in the game where some officials cannot handle opinions, advice and conversations from players or coaches, they become too elevated to talk to. This attitude only adds fuel to abuse and confrontation. Training officials just on rules and fitness isn’t enough in the modern game, it needs to evolve into more people manage- ment. The same could be said to coaching where there is no emphasis on any situational management, and there should be. Coaches should also take responsibility for their development The game has moved on, therefore the training given to coaches and officials should also evolve. One of the solutions in the past was to fine coaches and players who fell foul of abusing the officials, but it was the clubs that picked up the bill and the situation is then constantly repeated without penalty. Maybe instead of fining the clubs, deducting points from those who are repeat offenders would help put a lid on the escalating problem.

With participation levels at an all time low, the game will struggle not only to grow but also develop if the trend continues. You can hear a sigh of relief when a game gets cancelled at weekend when a team cannot fulfilled their fixture, as it helps relive an overstretched referee appointment schedule. Forget ex- panding the game into regions where Rugby League is alien to them and throwing much needed money into worthless projects and blackholes. It’s time to go back to basics, concentrate on the heartlands and the strong grassroots level first, get this right and let the sport bloom once more.
