SECOND to NONE NCL Round Up #COYS SECOND TO NONE NCL Round up The Saints last home fixture was against Drighlington, who were out to avenge an earlier season defeat by the Saints. With conditions that resembled a monsoon, it made the handling and attacking for both teams difficult. A try by Simon Topping, and goals by Matt Whitehead looked to have secured the points for the Saints, put a last minute penalty for the visitors ended the game in the draw. The week later, the Saints travelled to Hensingham with a squad that had to draft in Under 18s, Owen Smith and Josh Yarwood into the ranks due to injuries, and player availability. The hosts got off to a great start running in two tries in 15 minutes, before the Saints hit back with a try from Callum Cashin. Moments later, the Saints lost centre Cameron Ladd with a broken hand, and then loose forward Rob Charles, both players couldn’t return to the field. This put pressure on the bench, and with sweltering conditions it made life difficult. The home side led at half time 26 to 4,and it didn’t look Saints could claw themselves back into the game. However, the never say die attitude of the squad saw the visitors score three tries through captain Matt Whitehead, who also converted all three tries, pulled the Saints back into contention. However, as the home team tired, the Saints ran out of time to to claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. claim the victory, going down 34 to 22. We hope that the team, committee and supporters have had a comfortable, short journey over the Pennines. The Saints have been struggling of late, a 8 all draw out of the jaws of victory three weeks ago against Drighlington, was a disappointment as we felt we had done enough throughout the game to see us through. A week later, a patched up squad with two Under 18s making their senior debuts made the long journey up to Hensingham, losing narrowly at the final whistle. The NWML team enjoyed a great victory at home two weeks ago against a strong Hindley outfit, and then last week a late comeback fell just short against a young, in form Blackbrook outfit in conditions that resembled the tropics. Please enjoy the game, respect both teams and the officials, and hopefully we celebrate with two much needed points for the Saints come the final whistle. The waggon trailer was purchased and work began. The driving force behind the work on the cabin was another ex-player Paul Garrett, who not only designed the layout of it but also completed the work with his trusted companion Paul Green. The overall project was complete in approximately six months and the end product is situated behind the goal at the Shaw Road end. The club cannot thank enough the people who gave up their time to work on it and it just shows you don’t need a lot of money, just hard work and a lot of good lads! With Thanks to the following, Paul Garrett, Paul Green, Jason Hopwood, Terry Hester, Graham Sykes, Leo Casy, Neil Woodcock, Rob Proudman, Andy Foy, Rick Badby, Andy Spencer (ALCO), Geoff Woodcock and Lee’s Brewery. NWML Round Up The Saints entertained Hindley, who earlier in the season triumphed in a game that could go down as ‘bizarre’ in terms of how the game was handled on the field.
