    The O cial Magazine of Rugby League Cares January 2017 elcome to the fi rst edition of One n ll n the ne name for Rugby League Cares’ W ne-look nesletter hich has gone through something of a transformation at the end of hat has been another busy year for the charity As you can see, we have rebranded and changed the format so that our members and supporters can get a clearer understanding of the breadth of work we do throughout the sport. In this edition we welcome a number of new partners who have recently joined the charity to assist our work, particularly the support we provide to former and current players in all levels of the game. All Sport Insurance and Purple Travel have come on board as members of the newly-formed Rugby League Cares Business Club which aims to provide a wide range of services that help players, particularly in areas where the nature of their occupation can put them at a disadvantage. 2016 proved to be a challenging year for the charity as we continued to play an important role in assisting players successfully transitioning from the sport by awarding education and welfare grants. We enjoyed a very successful partnership with Rugby AM and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal on the Ride to Rio challenge; and we secured grants from Curious Minds and Cape UK to support club foundations to deliver some life-affi rming experiences for young people in their communities via a Cultural Welcome Partnership programme.     2017 Season Review Paul Hampton For the first time in Castleford’s 91 year history as a senior club they finished at the top of the table. After the regular season of 23 games the twelve team league split into the Super 8s at the top, with the bottom four joining with the Championship top four in the Qualifiers to determine promotion and relegation. Castleford finished the regular season at the top, ten points clear and maintained the lead to the end of the season. They were so far in front that the shield was awarded to them after only three games of the seven game series as they could not be caught. The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.
