October 2016 Broadside Beacon Sloop Club Broadside Volume 43 Issue 10 October 2016 Serving the Hudson River with Pride for 43 Years A Message from Our President Inside this issue: Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins, the shipwrights I think that everyone who came for all or part of the day return, showing our Beacon Spirit, and much, much will agree that we had a fantastic Pumpkin Festival. more…… The weather was great, the musical acts were wonderful, and a strong turnout of BSC volunteers made the entire day a great success from the pre-dawn pie delivery to the stowing away of supplies in the clubhouse just before sunset. We sold nearly 150 pies, as well as soup, chili, cider, and merchandise. While final tallies are still coming, it’s clear that the Pumpkin Fest closed out another great year of Beacon Sloop Club festivals both for the club and for the Beacon community. While the 2016 festival season is being laid to rest, we have other things ahead of us. Work on the Woody is continuing with work parties happening roughly every other weekend. We could use more people on those workdays. We have a steady group of three or four people, but even having five or six could make a big difference. If you are not on the volunteer email list, contact me at [email protected] so I can add you. Aside from festivals and the Woody, the November meeting will include the nominations for 2017 BSC officers, with last minute nominations and voting to be held at the December meeting. So as always, there’s lots going on to be a part of. NEXT EXEC. COM. West Bayshore Drive Traverse City, Michigan 49684 231-946-2647 [email protected] (c) Maritime Heritage Alliance 2011 1 1770's WELCOME History of the 1770's British Armed Sloop, WELCOME About mid 1700’s John Askin came over from Ireland to fight for the British in the American Colonies during the French and Indian War (in Europe known as the Seven Years War). When the war ended he had an opportunity to go back to Ireland, but stayed here and set up his own business. He and a partner formed a trading company that eventually went bankrupt and Askin spent over 10 years paying off his debt. He then formed a new company called the Southwest Fur Trading Company; his territory was from Montreal on the east to Minnesota on the west including all of the Northern Great Lakes. He had three boats built: Welcome, Felicity and Archange. Welcome is believed to be the first vessel he had constructed for his fur trade. Felicity and Archange were named after his daughter and wife. The origin of Welcome’s name is not known. He had two wives, a European wife in Detroit and an Indian wife up in the Straits. His wife in Detroit knew about the Indian wife and had accepted this and in turn she also made sure that all the children of his Indian wife received schooling. Felicity married a man by the name of Brush (Brush Street in Detroit is named after him).

  • Sailing Course Materials Overview
SAILING COURSE MATERIALS OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION The NCSC has an unusual ownership arrangement -- almost unique in the USA. You sail a boat jointly owned by all members of the club. The club thus has an interest in how you sail. We don't want you to crack up our boats. The club is also concerned about your safety. We have a good reputation as competent, safe sailors. We don't want you to spoil that record. Before we started this training course we had many incidents. Some examples: Ran aground in New Jersey. Stuck in the mud. Another grounding; broke the tiller. Two boats collided under the bridge. One demasted. Boats often stalled in foul current, and had to be towed in. Since we started the course the number of incidents has been significantly reduced. SAILING COURSE ARRANGEMENT This is only an elementary course in sailing. There is much to learn. We give you enough so that you can sail safely near New Castle. Sailing instruction is also provided during the sailing season on Saturdays and Sundays without appointment and in the week by appointment. This instruction is done by skippers who have agreed to be available at these times to instruct any unkeyed member who desires instruction. CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE When you "check-out" we give you a key to the sail house, and you are then free to sail at any time. No reservation is needed. But you must know how to sail before you get that key. We start with a written examination, open book, that you take at home.

The Setting Sun: A Life’s Adventure William R. Cotton Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science Colorado State University If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of my students 1.0 Introduction As I am now retired I am reflecting on my life and think about how my life tracked the way it has. How much is due to genetics? How much is due to my early up-bringing? How much is due to my own personal drive? How much is simply due to chance? These are questions which I seek to answer by documenting my life to this day. I begin by reviewing my early years followed by my college years and then life in Miami. From there I move to my life as a professor at Colorado State University and the directions that my scientific investigations have taken me. I also talk about non-science or pseudo science issues that I have explored. I discuss life in the mountains including building a cabin and life surrounding that era, followed by the yurt days, our cabin on the western slope of Colorado and life in Arizona. I discuss some of the fun things I have done, some kind of weird I must admit. I write each chapter beginning with my science/professional work and then go into the “fun stuff”. For those readers who are not into the “science stuff”, I encourage you to skip those parts and jump into the “fun stuff”. On the other hand, if you are mainly interested in the “science stuff”, I will not feel bad if you skip the “fun stuff”.

  • 1 MB2013 Story Behind Spirit 61913
Marion Bermuda— Spirit of Bermuda Day 6 Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, Paget BERMUDA–, June 19, 2013: From Spirit of Bermuda – Wednesday JUNE 19, 2013 THE STORY BEHIND THE “SPIRIT OF BERMUDA”, the three masted schooner at the RHADC dock. We are now safely in port at the RHADC, having had a well deserved breakfast and enjoying the reunion with our families. Spirit of Bermuda is tied up at the pier in hopes that people will come visit her over the next few days and see what a wonderful program Bermuda has built for its youth, with the tremendous support of the Bermudian community. As you look out at her or come visit her, we thought you might like to know a bit more about the story behind The Spirit of Bermuda. Our sailing master, Alan Burland, is 1 of the 3 founding members of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation. Started in 1996, the program grew out of the founders’ concern over the negative influence of pop culture on Bermuda’s youth. Shocked by the sudden presence of gangs on an island traditionally free from such destructive behavior, these visionaries aspired to create a sustainable educational experience for all Bermudian youth. Since Alan and the Sloop’s cofounders, Malcolm Kirkland and Jay Kempe, were all experienced sailors, creating an educational sailing vessel quickly arose as the logical solution. The foundation has several objectives: First, to create an experiential learning environment for all public school children. On each voyage, Spirit’s highly trained professional crew takes roughly 21 students on an adventure lasting 5 days at sea.

Sloop Island Canal Boat Study The Archaeology of a Champlain Canal Boat (Charlotte, Vermont) and the Pine Street Barge Canal (Burlington, Vermont) *454657* SDMS DocID 454657 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Sloop Island Canal Boat Study was funded as part of the Memorandum of Agreement for Mitigation of Adverse Effects for the Pine Street Canal Superfund Site, Burlington, Vermont. As per this agreement, the parties perform- ing the clean-up transferred to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum $150,000 to fulfill their obligations for mitigation of known historic resources at the Pine Street Canal Superfund site. We sincerely appreciate the support of Green Mountain Power, National Grid USA Service Company, Inc., and Vermont Gas Systems, Inc. in making this project possible. Additionally, Scott A. McLaughlin and his parents Floyd A. and Vesta K. McLaughlin also provided substantial support for the data collection, documentation, and analysis phases of the project. The Sloop Island Canal Boat Project was made possible through the strong support of the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation (VDHP) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In particular, Giovanna Peebles, Eric Gilbertson and Scott Dillon at the VDHP and Karen Lumino and John Vetter at the EPA were instrumental in achieving project goals. The Sloop Island Canal Boat Study, begun in 2002, was an outstanding success due to the support and dedication of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s (LCMM) membership, staff, interns and volunteers. The following people gave LCMM’s Maritime Research Institute (MRI) the necessary support to conduct the project, which could not have succeeded without their efforts: Eloise Beil, Sara Brigadier, Gordon Cawood, Justin Clement, Arthur Cohn, BobbyeJo Coke, Joanne Dennis, Neil Dixon, Alexis Godat, Sarah Hallet, Brenda Hughes, Adam Kane, Thomas Keefe, Krissy Kenny, Pierre LaRocque, Adam Loven, Sarah Lyman, Chris McClain, Scott A.
