Època: 1682-1689 (regència de Sofia, germana de Pere el Gran). La Khovantxina (la rebel-lió dels Khovanski) reflecteix l'enfrontament entre els partidaris dels modes de vida antic i nou a Rússia en el moment en el qual està a punt d'ocupar el poder el Tsar Pere el Gran. D'una ha banda, hi els Khovanski i els seus Streltsi, que duen una lluita contra política la regència, i, de l'altra, els Vells Creients, con­ duïts per Dossifei, que han rebutjat, des del 1654, totes les refor­ mes. En definitiva, un enfrontament, per raons polítiques a religio­ ses, entre la Vella Rússia dels Khovanski i de Dossifei, i la Nova Rússia que propugnà Pere el Gran. Acte 1. La plaça de Sant Basili, a Moscou. Kuzka, guàrdia dels Streltsi, està dormisquejant. Comença el dia. Entra un escrivà. Uns Streltsi, que han passat la nit a la Plaça, des­ prés del motí de la nit anterior, comencen a moure's. Apareix el baiard Xakloviti i diu a l'escrivà que redacti una carta d'acusació contra els prínceps Khovanski, els quals (diu) conspiren contra el tron. Kuzka ha sentit l'acusació que Xakloviti ha dictat a l'escrivà, men­ tre la gent del poble travessa el fons cantant una cançó popular. La demana a LACLAUÉS gentada l'escrivà que llegeixi la proclama, que ara penja a la paret. L'escrivà demana una gratificació a canvi, però no acon­ segueix més que befes. Quan se'n va Xakloviti, entra el príncep Ivan SER ELS dels un MILLORS, Khovanski, cap Streltsi, amb brillant seguici. Golitsyn llegeix, amb una evident indiferència, una carta de la Tsa­ rina Sofia. Els seus comentaris a les tendres paraules de la Tsarina denoten que els seus sentiments han canviat, cosa que el porta a ser prudent. Entra Varsonofiev i anuncia que Marfa espera ser rebuda. Marfa, tot seguit, llegeix en una copa plena d'aigua la ruïna de tots els projectes del príncep. Golitsyn, furiós, ordena a Varsonofiev que ofegui Marfa en un aiguamoll pròxim a la seva residència. Mentre es dedica a pensar en la seva glòria passada i en el seu deshonor futur, tal com ha estat predit, Ivan Khovanski entra sense anunci previ. Entre Golitsyn i Khovanski l'animositat personal i política és gran. També apareix bossifei, que mira de calmar els dos prínceps. Prop de la residència passa un grup dels Vells Creients i Dossifei lloa el seu coratge, mentre torna Marfa i explica, amb l'alè trencat, l'atemptat de què acaba d'escapolir-se. Darrera d'ella entra Xaklo­ viti amb un missatge de la Tsarina: una proclama ha revelat el com­ plot dels Khovanski contra el Tsar i aquest ha ordenat: «Que se'ls detingui» . Acte III. El raval dels Streltsi, prop de la residència dels Khovanski. Els Vells Creients canten el seu himne. Marfa se separa del grup i canta un plany sobre els dies joiosos de la passió d'Andrei. Profe­ titza també uri proper càstig per la seva traïció. Dossifei, tot seguit, consola Marfa i fa esment del proper sacrifici dels Vells Creients que ella havia predit. Quan han marxat, arriba Xakloviti, que lamenta l'estat de la pàtria i demana l'ajut diví. Un grup dels Streltsi es bara­ lla amb les seves dones i arriba sobtadament l'escrivà, que anuncia la desfeta d'un cos dels Streltsi per les tropes del Tsar Pere. Tots reclamen la presència del príncep Ivan Khovanski, el qual, finalment, els aconsella obediència aparent i temporal al Tsar. Acte IV Quadre I. Estança al palau dels Khovanski. Ivan Khovanski és a taula; les serventes canten un cant melangiós un amb i ell ordena que cantin quelcom més alegre. Entra confident un missatge de Golitsyn que l'avisa d'un gran perill. «¿Qui gosarà tocar-rne?», diu Khovanski, i expulsa el missatger. Per alliberar-se de l'angoixa fa cridar les joves esclaves perses perquè ballin. Quan acaba la dansa entra Xakloviti amb una invitació per anar a una reunió del Gran Consell amb la Regent. Pensant-se que ha estat reha­ bilitat, Khovanski ordena que li portin la seva vestimenta proto­ colària, mentre el cor canta un himne a la glòria del Cigne Blanc, mort. Xaklo­ però, quan es disposa a sortir, és apunyalat i ferit de viti, impulsor d'aquest assassinat, parodia l'himne del Cigne Blanc (emblema dels Khovanski) i es mofa davant el cadàver. Quadre II. La Plaça de Sant Basili, a Moscou. Golitsyn, escortat per les tropes, marxa a l'exili. Entra Dossifei seguit de Marfa, que li diu que s'ha donat ordre de destruir tots els Vells Creients, a la qual cosa Dossifei respon que es llevaran la vida ells mateixos. Arriba, desesperat, el príncep Andrei, que ignora encara l'assassinat del seu pare i exigeix que li lliurin Emma. En cas con­ trari, amenaça amb matar Marfa, a la qual també creu responsable de la denúncia dels conjurats, però Marfa li explica la mort del seu pare i quan Andrei es fa càrrec que probablement ell tampoc no sobreviurà li demana que el faci escapar. Arriben els Streltsi amb els instruments de llur pròpia execució, però finalment, en la veu de l'herald Streixnev, arriba el perdó. Acte V. Un bosc a les rodalies de Moscou. El ES lA MUJER Prop de l'ermita dels Vells Creients. Dossifei, sol de bell antuvi, es 1110 reuneix tot seguit amb l'assemblea dels Vells Creients i prepara el Tono EL MISTERlü DE LA SEDUCCIÓN ESTÁ EN SUS ojos, sacrifici col-lectiu que evitarà que siguin capturats vius per les tropes del Tsar.

    A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered.

Nous avons sélectionné ici les meilleurs enregistrements représentant ces deux tendances de l'édition actuelle. A tout seigneur tout honneur : donnons la vedette au plus génial et au plus abondant de tous les musiciens, pour l'une de ses œuvres les plus riches et, curieusement, les plus mal connues. L'Oratorio de Noël de Jean-Sébastien Bach vient de bénéficier d'une gravure d'origine autrichienne pleinement satisfaisante (1). Certes, on le sait, cette œuvre monumentale, composée à la hâte, intègre de très nombreuses pages précédemment destinées à des Cantates, voire à la Passion selon saint Marc. Outre que ces doubles utilisations n'avaient rien de scandaleux à cette époque, elles n'em­ pêchent pas cet Oratorio de posséder son style propre et son unité profonde. Richesse mélodique, variétés instrumentales et rythmi­ ques : rarement le Cantor aura développé à un tel point les aspects divers de son unique génie. Hans Swarowsky dirige cette version enregistrée en mai et juin, l'an dernier. Sous sa baguette sont rangés l'Orchestre National de Vienne, le Wiener Kammerchor, ainsi que cinq solistes peu fami­ liers aux oreilles françaises et que l'on découvrira avec ravisse­ ment. La soprano Heather Harper, la contralto Ruth Hesse, les ténors Thomas Page et Kurt Equiluz, la basse Kieth Engen. C'est du grand art, inspiré, puissant que tous nous offrent ici. Us sont servis, en outre, par une prise de son et une gravure d'un niveau élevé.

    DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.
