Shriners Play a Big Role Reagan’s Story in Referrals Six-year-old Reagan and her family are from a suburb of Cincinnati, so it was an adventure for parents Erin When it comes to finding medical help for and Ryan to pile everyone into the car for an end-of- children, Shriners are now more important summer camping trip near Columbus, Ohio. than ever. Twilight made it difficult to Cincinnati, and now it has become even easier with a website and referral cards. see the metal fire ring around the smoldering —hot coals and Reagan fell on the embers, receiving second and third-degree burns to the back of both legs.

Ryan rushed Reagan to the nearest local hospital. “It all happened in a flash,” She recalled of the event.

Once treated, the nurse asked where they would like to take Reagan for continuing care. Erin immediately requested Shriners Hospitals for Children—Cincinnati; she had a friend whose daughter had been treated for a coffee scald and knew it was the best destination or pediatric burns. They had an appointment two days later.

“We had never experienced anything like Reagan’s accident,” Erin said. “I never knew how horrible burns were; how even the simple act of cleaning the wound causes excruciating pain. We are so grateful for what Shriners did for us.”

The kindness and superior care they experienced at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital stayed with them months after Reagan’s wounds had healed, so during the holidays Erin, a middle school teacher, asked her students for hospital donations rather than gifts for her. They did not disappoint. Ryan delivered a large cart filled with games, books and craft items for other patients to enjoy. “It isn’t nearly enough to say thank you for all the wonderful work Shriners Hospitals do,” Erin said, “not only for our daughter Reagan, but for so many families across the country.”

As usual the temple can count on the Caravan for their dedication to supporting our Syrian facility and membership, we have been doing so for 47 consecutive years. As our Director Jim Steele always says… “to a Caravan member, Shrinedom means, more than wearing a fez, carrying a paid-up dues card, wearing an emblem on a shirt, or on a finger flash a ring, they know if you are not sincere in your heart, it doesn’t mean a thing”. If you are looking to join a unit with active temple participation, and parade vehicles available at no charge, take a long look at the Antique Caravan, and be part of a brotherhood that consoles a brother when he is sick, and assist him when in need, without a thought of personal reward for any act or deed. We walk and act in such a way that the membership without can see, that only the best can meet the test, laid down by the Antique Caravan members. GC

Cliff and Caryl Fullman Hospital Hosts Greetings Nobles and friends. We of the Hospital Hosts Unit, would like to wish everyone a joyous and Happy Easter Season. Spring has finally “sprung,” and the many Syrian Shrine events and activities are upon us. The Hosts Unit continues to invite any Noble willing to volunteer a couple of days each month, to join us at our SHRINERS HOSPITAL for CHILDREN. We meet each 1st and 3rd Wednesday at the hospital, 9:30 A.M., meetings last approx., one hour. Parking in the Hospital parking garage. We are looking forward to the Annual Volunteers Appreciation Dinner, April 30th. This event has been a highlight each year where the annual acknowledgement of volunteer hours, and the awards of Volunteers of the Year are presented. We are proud to say that through the years a member of the Hospital Host Unit has been chosen for this prestigious award. We are happy to report that all active members of our Unit are healthy and performing their volunteer duties each week. Now a little story of praise and thanks… Seems the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for an answered prayer. Suzie walked to the podium. She said “Two months ago, my husband Frank, had a terrible bicycle accident and his scrotum was crushed. The pain was excruciating, and the doctors didn’t know if they could help him.” You could hear muffled gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Frank must have experienced. “Frank was unable to hold me or the children, and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation and pieced together the crushed remnants of Frank’s scrotum and wrap wire around it with metal staples to hold it in place.” Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the surgery performed on Frank. “Now, thank the Lord, Frank is out of the hospital and the doctors say that in time, his scrotum will heal completely.” All the men sighed with relief. The Pastor rose and asked if anyone else had something to say. A man stood up and approached the podium. He said, “I’m Frank.” The entire congregation held its breath. “I just want to tell my wife that the word is STERNUM.” My friends…live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold

Kilee Brookbank, center in this 2017 photo, suffered burns on 45 percent of her body after an explosion at her home. The Georgetown, Ohio woman was treated at Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati and created a charity that has raised thousands of dollars for the hospital. Also, in this photo are Lori Highlander (left) and David Aaronson, the real hospital board chair. The Shriners Hospital for Children, an institution for 50 years in Cincinnati, expects to move its operations to Dayton, Ohio by the summer of 2020 and sell our 30-bed Burnet Avenue building. The decision reflects a drop in the number of children who suffer burns thanks to fire-resistant clothing and shifts in who pays for medical care. Our hospital, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, announced Wednesday that officials are in talks to move its services and name to a building on the campus of Dayton Children’s Hospital within 16 months. After the move, the Burnet Avenue facility would be sold, said spokeswoman Mashayla Colwell. On June 16, the hospital marked its golden anniversary with a grand patient reunion. About 30,000 patients have been treated at Shiners Cincinnati. The downsizing has been long under discussion within the Hospital Board and Imperial headquarters in Tampa. Kilee Brookbank of Georgetown, Ohio, wrote a book, “Beautiful Scars: A Life Redefined,” about her 2014 burn and treatment at the Cincinnati hospital. She has raised nearly $300,000 for the hospital. She said Wednesday she is sad about the move. “We are proud to have been able to invest our time and effort into the hospital over the past five years, and we are grateful that Shriners was so close to home when I needed the care,” she said. “The important thing is that Shriners will still be operating its burn center from Dayton Children’s Hospital. Without Shriners relocating to Dayton, there would have been no hospital in the Midwest that specialized in burn care.”
