Day 5 - CAPE HATTERAS - OCRACOKE ISLAND - This morning, we drive through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. As we drive, we will stop to visit some historic sites including the Chicamaconico Lifesaving Station built in 1874 and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse on the American Coast. The present structure was built in 1870 and stands 208 feet. This sentinel warns ships away from Diamond Shoals, known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” We travel by ferry to Ocracoke Island, North Carolina reportedly one of the hiding places of Blackbeard. This notorious pirate and his crew were killed here at Teach’s Hole in 1718. We drive across the island to Ocracoke Village where we will have time for lunch and shopping. Next we take a ferry across a section of Pamlico Sound Tryon Palace to Cedar Island and along the shoreline towards Morehead City, where we overnight.
