Potentate’s notes

Hi and how are you again? Only yesterday I took an oath to be your Potentate for 2016 and already a third of the year has elapsed! The year has been busy, rewarding, frustrating and sometimes crazy. You cannot understand the job until you are in it and even then it is sometimes clear as an ink blot! Since our last article, Sahib has had the greatest Potentate’s Reception I can imagine! Your committee did a superb job in all areas of planning, decorations, food, organization, seating, etc. Sandy and I personally gave a special dessert course to our guests…a Circus…to inform all that we are a circus town and very proud of it. Our favorite circus lady, Leslie, brought her circus school to Sahib and wowed the audience! Her students were beautiful to see and great for our audience. They then proceeded to eat us out of ice cream and cookies. This reception as with all others, is a tribute to our Sahib family. Our New Shriner Pizza Party was not as successful as we had hoped. I was very disappointed, but we did have a fruitful discussion with the group who attended. We will try again later. I have been privileged to host several Grand Lodges and Shrine groups on your behalf. Our goal, as always, is to gain friends and hopefully a few new Sahib members. Our Imperial Sir and his staff were our guests and as usual we had a great turnout of nobles to greet and meet our Imperial leadership! Lady Sandy and her committee had a wonderful luncheon with our Imperial First Lady that was very well attended. Our “civility” emphasis seems to be paying off with no incidents that have been brought to my notice. I hope all will remember to count to 10, bite your tongue and remember what our folks taught us…be nice! It also makes my job much easier! We are trying to get some new interest in clubs and units, but we cannot do it without you. Be positive when you speak to your friends and be a recruiter for Sahib. A video lover’s unit, a skeet club, cigar smokers group, gun handling programs, firefighters club, etc. Do you have an idea? If so, write it up and give me a call. You may be seeing staff changes. These are brought about by changing needs in our temple. We hope you will help us as we move forward with our new staff. A friend and accountant, Barbara Hays, has retired and Cande Bustmante has been hired to fill that vacancy. Say hi to her when you see her. We have a need for fundraisers to keep us solvent. Your Divan works very hard every year to make ends meet and it is a very tough job. On occasion, we will go to the clubs and units to kick-in a share of a project and for the most part they have aided us. We thank those who helped for meeting their obligations to Sahib. We are considering major concerts, a gun show, gun raffles and a number of other programs. For years, Sahib has subsidized the Men’s Lunch Program to the tune of $2 (plus or minus) per meal. Roughly $200 a week or $800 a month or $10,000 per year depending on attendance. This has necessarily come to a halt to help keep us solvent. For your information, Egypt, Bahia, Mahi and Amara Shriners have been sold and they are looking for smaller buildings. Several other temples are seriously considering downsizing as their membership declines and funds dry up. Sahib has been able to maintain its temple adequately thus far, but as our membership declines, drastic decisions may have to be made. We need your help to avoid this situation! Lastly, our clean up is continuing. We may not get it all, but we will make a big dent in it. Regards to all, be safe.

Yours in the Faith, Carroll G. Scribner Sahib Potentate 2016

What are they? A plastic cube with a slot in the top.

What are the boxes for? To help collect donations, money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from the Hospital Days Fund Drive.

Where are the boxes to be? In any store or business, preferably near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy for them to put their change in the box.

When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donate small amounts of cash at any time.

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?

Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449 if you can arrange a placement.

Pull Tabs for Shriners Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of January 31, 2016, they have collected 108,960 lbs., for a total of $56,646.36 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit loca- tion) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
