J. GREIMAS Sri Astuti and Yoseph Yapi Taum STKIP Persada Khatulistiwa, Sintang and Faculty of Letters Universitas Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta [email protected] and [email protected] DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2017.010101 received 8 June 2016; revised 4 April 2017; accepted 15 July 2017 Abstract Kana Inai Abang Nguak is a folk lyric by the society of Dayak Desa which is spoken in formal ritual language by chanting. The characters in kana are usually related with the life in nirvana and represents the thoughts and world view of Dayak society. This paper is meant to discuss one kana entitled Inai Abang Nguak using narratology perspective of A. J. Greimas. Greimas’s narratology studies gradually reveal surface structure and deep structure of a story. Surface structure reveals the context and story sequences. Deep structure reveals the syntax structure (actantial and functional scheme) and also semantic structure, which are three semantic axis including desire pursued axis, power axis, and communication axis. The text Inai Abang Nguak consists of seven-sequence(act)-story actantial scheme which centers on Inai Abang as the subject of the story. The success of earth in conquering the heaven (nirvana) is caused by three factors: 1) although the heaven is blessed with eternal life, the heaven is actually blood-related with this earth; 2) the heaven’s act in capturing earth’s ritual leaders is a heavy violation that has to be fought against by the earth; 3) the power of the earth as one unit (human beings, animals, spirits, and magical powers) to attack the heaven and bring back harmony to the earth. It can be concluded that Greimas narratology can be used to understand surface structure, deep structure, and even discursive structure of a folk story. Keywords: narratology, physical structure, mental structure, semantic axis, and world view Introduction Tradition of telling stories in front of the public is the most important form of cultural performance in various parts of the Nusantara, including the Dayak society in Borneo. Dayak Desa tribe, for example, perform kanuak and kana as a cultural performance whose objective is not merely to entertain but also to give expression of the society’s various dimensions of perspective. Kanuak and kana is a form of literature that is sung by the performer in front of an audience. Kanuak is a form of story that uses daily language and tells about daily life. The performer of kanuak does not need any special skill in telling stories. Meanwhile, Kana is also a form of literature that is spoken in front of people. The difference from kanuak is that kanuak uses a language form that is easier to understand, while kana uses the poetic Dayak Desa language, a form of distilled language that sounds unique and special. Kanuak is a ritual text. In other words, kanak language is a formal-ritual language with archaic features (Appell, 2010). The characters in kana are the characters of nirvana. The delivery of this story uses a different style of story-telling compared to other Dayak Desa oral literature. Kana is performed by chanting. Kana performance usually takes a very long time; sometimes it takes days, weeks, and even months to finish. According to a source, there has never been a story teller that could finish one title of a story. Usually a story teller only finishes half of it. Each story in kana is unique and special. Each teller can tell a story with various titles. Each story appears with many variations. Each character can also undergo a very different story line under different titles. Every title of the story is inherited from the ancestors. Thus, the title and the story are ready to use, while the story teller can tell the story without having to prepare a new story. As explained before, kana is narrated by chanting. Every line of one part has to end in the same syllable. A story teller can change the sound by ending the previous sound.     Robert Wessing Leiden University Symbolic Animals in the Land between the Waters Markers of Place and Transition Abstract This paper analyzes the use of symbolic animals in Indonesia and Southeast Asia gen- erally as markers of place or state of being, and aids in transition between states of being. It shows that especially naga and Garuda, both subsets of a larger category of naga, respectively define the categories upperworld and underworld as the male and female extremes of a water continuum. These are linked by the rainbow, which is also a member of the naga category. Together these symbolic animals make up the axis mundi, as can be seen in both the symbolic mountain of the Javanese shadow theatre and the Balinese cremation tower. Within the arc of water created by these three ele- ments lies the earth, which has emerged from, and can be seen to be part of the under- world. The emergence of the earth as well as states and crops from the underworld is made possible by the movement of buffalo or its equivalents, which also aid in the transition of human beings from the prenatal state, through life and into death.     Between G elanggang and Lekra: Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke Introduction During the first decade of the New Order, the idea of the autonomy of art was the unchallenged basis for all art production considered legitimate. The term encompasses two significant assumptions. First, it includes the idea that art and/or its individual categories are recognized within society as independent sub-systems that make their own rules, i.e. that art is not subject to influences exerted by other social sub-systems (politics and religion, for example). Secondly, it entails a complex of aesthetic notions that basically tend to exclude all non-artistic considerations from the aesthetic field and to define art as an activity detached from everyday life. An aesthetics of autonomy can create problems for its adherents, as a review of recent occidental art and literary history makes clear. Artists have attempted to overcome these problems by reasserting social ideals (e.g. as in naturalism) or through revolt, as in the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century which challenged the aesthetic norms of the autonomous work of art in order to relocate aesthetic experience at a pivotal point in relation to individual and social life.* 1 * This article is based on parts of my doctoral thesis, Angkatan 45.     Vol. 1 Journal of Korean and Asian Arts SPRING 2020 Identity, Minority, and the Idea of a Nation: a Closer Look at Frieda (1951) by Dr. Huyung Umi Lestari / Universitas Multimedia Nusantara 【Abstract】 The discourse on film nasional (national film) in Indonesia always started by bringing up Darah dan Doa (1950, Blood and Prayer) as the foundation of the Indonesian film industry. The prominent film historian, Misbach Yusa Biran, stated that Darah dan Doa was produced with national consciousness value. The legacy of Darah dan Doa was not only neglecting the role of filmmakers from pre-Independence in Indonesia but also the role of other filmmakers during the 1950s, including Dr. Huyung. Previously, Dr. Huyung (Hinatsu Eitaro /Hŏ Yŏng) came from Korea and became a supporter of Imperial Japan during World War II. After Indonesia gained her independence, Huyung joined Berita Film Indonesia and became a film teacher at the Cine Drama Institute and Kino Drama Atelier. It was there that they then went on to make Frieda (1951), Bunga Rumah Makan (1951, The Flower of the Restaurant), Kenangan Masa (1951, Memories of the Past), and Gadis Olahraga (1951, the Sportswoman). This article discusses 'unity in diversity', a concept in filmmaking that was started by Huyung in 1949. When discussing Darah and Doa as the first film nasional, people forget that the film is driven from the military perspective. Meanwhile, Huyung tried to represent an ethnic minority in Frieda and showing that the ordinary people and the intellectuals also shaped the nation. Based on his experience in the Japanese army and Berita Film Indonesia, Huyung understood that film was very useful in achieving the goals of the state apparatus, due to the cinema's ability to spread nationalism.

The Komedie Stamboel, also known as the Malay Opera, occupies a prom- inent place in Indonesia's cultural history.1 lts emergence in 1891 has been characterized as a 'landmark' in the development of modern popular theatre (Teeuw 1979:207).     ABOUT FACE: ASIAN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUSTRALIA Alison Elizabeth Broinowski 12 December 2001 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University ii Statement This thesis is my own work. Preliminary research was undertaken collaboratively with a team of Asian Australians under my co-direction with Dr Russell Trood and Deborah McNamara. They were asked in 1995-96 to collect relevant material, in English and vernacular languages, from the public sphere in their countries of origin. Three monographs based on this work were published in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Australia Asia Relations at Griffith University and these, together with one unpublished paper, are extensively cited in Part 2. The researchers were Kwak Ki-Sung, Anne T. Nguyen, Ouyang Yu, and Heidi Powson and Lou Miles. Further research was conducted from 2000 at the National Library with a team of Chinese and Japanese linguists from the Australian National University, under an ARC project, ‘Asian Accounts of Australia’, of which Shun Ikeda and I are Chief Investigators. Its preliminary findings are cited in Part 2. Alison Broinowski iii Abstract This thesis considers the ways in which Australia has been publicly represented in ten Asian societies in the twentieth century. It shows how these representations are at odds with Australian opinion leaders’ assertions about being a multicultural society, with their claims about engagement with Asia, and with their understanding of what is ‘typically’ Australian. It reviews the emergence and development of Asian regionalism in the twentieth century, and considers how Occidentalist strategies have come to be used to exclude and marginalise Australia.

Aneka ragam topik ini dikelompokkan ke dalam lima tema: budaya dan kearifan lokal; industri, kaum marginal, dan masalah kota; transportasi dan angkutan; olahraga dan kesehatan; serta media massa dan hiburan.     EVALUASI KETERBACAAN BUKU TEKS BAHASA SUNDA UNTUK SEKOLAH DASAR DI JAWA BARAT KATA PENGANTAR KEPALA PUSAT PEMBINAAN DAN PENGEMBANGAN BAHASA Pembinaan dan pengembangan bahasa dan sastra di Indonesia yang mencakupi masalah bahasa nasional, bahasa daerah, dan bahasa asing perlu diupayakan secara sungguh-sungguh, terencana, dan berkesinam- bungan. Pembinaan bahasa nasional dimaksudkan untuk meningkatkan mutu pemakaian bahasa Indonesia di semua aras kehidupan. Pengembang- annya ditujukan pada pemenuhan fungsi bahasa Indonesia, baik sebagai sarana komunikasi nasional maupun sebagai wahana pengungkap berbagai aspek kehidupan, seiring dengan tuntutan zaman. Langkah yang perlu ditempuh untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, antara lain, melalui serangkaian kegiatan penelitian berbagai aspek bahasa dan sastra Indonesia dan daerah. Pembinaannya dilakukan melalui kegiatan pemasyarakatan bahasa Indonesia yang baik dan benar, peningkatan apresiasi sastra, serta penyebarluasan berbagai buku acuan, pedoman, dan hasil penelitian kebahasaan dan kesastraan lainnya. Sejak tahun 1974 kegiatan penelitian bahasa dan sastra, sebagaimana disebutkan di atas, berada di bawah koordinasi Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa, Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan, yang secara operasional dikelola oleh: masing-masing satu proyek dan bagian proyek yang berkedudukan di DKI Jakarta dan dua puluh bagian proyek daerah.
