Kevin O’Hare, D irector of T h e R oyal B allet, announced today that First A rtist L iam Scarlett is appointed the first ever A rtist in Residence of , a position that w ill allow him to focus solely on his choreographic w ork. Scarlett w ill take up the new role w ith im m ediate effect and w ill m ake his last appearances w ith the C om pany as a dancer in the current run of . Scarlett’s latest w ork V iscera receives its U K prem iere at House tom orrow night.

K evin O’Hare said “This is a very exciting m om ent both for Liam and also for The Royal B allet. W e’ve seen Liam ’s choreographic talents develop since his tim e at the and subsequently as a m em ber of the C om pany w ith M onica M ason’s encouragem ent and I’m delighted that w e’re now able to offer him this opportunity to concentrate full tim e on his choreographic w ork.”

Scarlett joined The Royal Ballet in 2005 and w as appointed First A rtist in 2008. His natural flair for choreography w as encouraged and supported by both The Royal Ballet School and The Royal Ballet and Scarlett has developed a distinctive choreographic style w hich has received extensive praise w ith com m issions from around the w orld. His appointm ent continues The Royal Ballet’s history of nurturing the next generation of choreographers.

The variety of choreographic talent is further enhanced w ith w orld prem ieres this Season from Kim B randstrup, A lastair M arriott and A lexei R atm ansky w ho w ill be creating his first ever w ork for a British com pany.

To consolidate further and underpin the C om pany’s com m itm ent to choreographic developm ent tw o C horeographic A ffiliates, M ayuri B oonham and A lexander W hitley, w ill be linked to the C om pany through to 2014. A long w ith R obert B inet, currently C horeographic A pprentice, they w ill m ake w ork for the Linbury Studio Theatre and contribute across the Royal Opera House w orking w ith education and other departm ents. The C om pany is also delighted to announce that, through an offer of generous financial support, it has been possible to establish a C horeographic Bursary for the next three years w hich w ill facilitate young and em erging choreographers w ithin the C om pany to develop their craft through exposure to a variety of experiences and projects.

L iam Scarlett Born in Ipsw ich, he trained at the Linda Shipton School of D ancing and then at The Royal Ballet Low er and U pper Schools. In 2005, after graduating, he joined The Royal Ballet, and in 2008 w as prom oted to First A rtist. Liam ’s interest in choreography began w hile at T he Royal Ballet School w here he w on both the K enneth M acM illan and U rsula M oreton C horeographic A w ards and w as the first recipient of the D e V alois Trust Fund A w ard. W hile still at the School he w as com m issioned to create M onochrom atic (2004) and A llegro de Jeunesse (2005) for T he Royal Ballet School’s A nnual M atinee perform ances at the Royal Opera House. He continued to develop his interest through ROH2’s D ancelines, led by K im Brandstrup.

For The Royal Ballet he created D espite and V ayam os al D iablo (ROH2’s In G ood C om pany, 2006), and has frequently choreographed for The Royal Ballet’s D raftw orks. He has w orked closely w ith m any dancers in the C om pany to create several pas de deux and G ala pieces for w orldw ide perform ance; these have included N octurne, Reverie, Som ente and Fantasie- Im prom ptu. For Ballet B lack in the Linbury Studio T heatre he created Hinterland (2006) and Indigo C hildren (2007), both of w hich have been revived.

In 2009 Scarlett took part in the autum n w orkshops of The N ew Y ork C horeographic Institute at their invitation, creating G argoyles w ith m em bers of N ew Y ork C ity Ballet. He has tw ice been nom inated for a C ritics C ircle D ance A w ard for Best C horeography for Of M ozart (2008) and C onsolations and Liebestraum (2009), both for T he Royal Ballet’s N ew W orks perform ances.

His first m ain-stage w ork for The Royal Ballet w as A sphodel M eadow s (2010), nom inated for a South B ank A w ard and an Olivier A w ard and w inner of a C ritics’ C ircle A w ard. It w as follow ed in 2012 by Sw eet V iolets. His ballet V iscera, created for the M iam i C ity Ballet entered the repertory of The Royal Ballet in the 2012/13 Season.
