Hans Ruesch, the Swiss racing driver, best-selling author and pioneer of the antivivisection movement, born on May 17, 1913, died on August 26, 2007, at the age of 94 of cancer in Lugano. He was the last surviving grand prix winner of the interwar "golden age" of motor racing. Two of his novels were made into Hollywood films, and his subsequent publications helped give impetus to the international antivivisection movement. Hans Ruesch in 1967 The son of a German-speaking Swiss father and an Italian-speaking Swiss mother, Ruesch spent the first 13 years of his life in Naples, where his father owned a textile mill. Schooled in Switzerland, he studied law briefly at the University of Zurich before leaving at the age of 19 to pursue his interest in fast cars. His first competitive drive was in 1932 in an MG, but before long he could be seen at the wheel of more potent machines from Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Third place in an Alfa in the 1500cc category at the 1932 Brno grand prix at the Masaryk-Ring in Czechoslovakia was followed by victories in various hill climbs in the Swiss Alps. In his second year, he acquired a three-litre Maserati, with which he picked up further hill climb trophies and set a new world speed record for the standing-start kilometer, averaging 88.33 mph at the Montlhery autodrome outside Paris. Ice racing on frozen lakes was a popular sport at the time, and in 1934 Ruesch and his Maserati 8CM won events on the Titisee and the Eibsee in Germany.

A WRITER’S CALENDAR Compiled by J. L. Herrera for my mother and with special thanks to Rose Brown, Peter Jones, Eve Masterman, Yvonne Stadler, Marie-France Sagot, Jo Cauffman, Tom Errey and Gianni Ferrara INTRODUCTION I began the original calendar simply as a present for my mother, thinking it would be an easy matter to fill up 365 spaces. Instead it turned into an ongoing habit. Every time I did some tidying up out would flutter more grubby little notes to myself, written on the backs of envelopes, bank withdrawal forms, anything, and containing yet more names and dates. It seemed, then, a small step from filling in blank squares to letting myself run wild with the myriad little interesting snippets picked up in my hunting and adding the occasional opinion or memory. The beginning and the end were obvious enough. The trouble was the middle; the book was like a concertina — infinitely expandable. And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays. So my apologies for the discrepancies which may have crept in. In the meantime — Many Happy Returns! Jennie Herrera 1995 2 A Writer’s Calendar January 1st: Ouida J. D. Salinger Maria Edgeworth E. M. • HIV Twenty-Eight Years Later: What Is the Truth? Gary Null, Phd December 3, 2012
HIV Twenty-Eight Years Later: What is the Truth? Gary Null, PhD December 3, 2012 In the May 4, 1984 issue of the prestigious journal Science, one of the most important research papers of the last quarter century was published. “Frequent Detection and Isolation of Cytopathic Retroviruses (HTLV-III) from Patients with AIDS and at Risk for AIDS” would rapidly become the medical Magna Carta for the entire gold rush to develop diagnostic methods to identify the presence of HIV in human blood and to invent pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines in a global war against AIDS. This paper, along with three others published in the same issue of Science, was written by Dr. Robert Gallo, then head of the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology (LTCB) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, and his lead researcher Dr. Mikulas Popovic. To this day, this article continues to document the most cited research to prove the HIV hypothesis in scientific papers and places like the nation’s Centers of Disease Control (CDC) website. For virologists, molecular biologists and other infectious disease researchers, particularly those tied to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries and the national medical and health institutions, the news of Gallo’s discovery was manna rained down from heaven. All research into other possible causes for the AIDS crisis ended abruptly. As soon as the winds shifted away from earlier efforts to find the cause of AIDS —people’s lifestyles, immune suppressing illicit drug use and other health risks and illnesses that adversely affect the body’s immune system — to that of a single new virus, the case was closed.

  • Roots of Human Resistance to Animal Rights: Psychological and Conceptual Blocks
\\Server03\productn\L\LCA\8-1\LCA105.txt unknown Seq: 1 14-MAY-02 15:16 ROOTS OF HUMAN RESISTANCE TO ANIMAL RIGHTS: PSYCHOLOGICAL AND CONCEPTUAL BLOCKS By Steven J. Bartlett* Animal law has focused attention on such interconnected issues as the prop- erty status of nonhuman animals, juristic personhood, and standing. These subjects are undeniably central concerns that dominate discussions of animal rights, but they do not relate to the most fundamental factors that are responsible both for human resistance to animal rights and for our spe- cies' well-entrenched, cruel, and self-righteous exploitation and destruction of nonhuman animals. In this comment, the author reviews recent advocacy of animal rights and offers the first study of human psychological and con- ceptual blocks that stand in the way of efforts on behalf of animal law and legislation. Paying long overdue attention to these obstacles provides a real- istic framework for evaluating the effectiveness of attempts to initiate mean- ingful change. I am in favour of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being. ÐAbraham Lincoln I. INTRODUCTION: ANIMALS AS PROPERTYÐIS THIS THE PROBLEM? Animals are property. These three wordsÐand their legal implications and practical ramificationsÐdefine the most significant doctrines and cases . and the realities for current practitioners of animal law.1 For many people in our society, the concept of legal rights for other animals is quite ªunthinkable.º That is because our relationship with the * Senior Research Professor of Philosophy, Oregon State University; Visiting Scholar in Psychology & Philosophy, Willamette University; Previously Professor of Philosophy, St.

Such is a quotation from the psalms, and I’m sure that it’s not confined to those marble faced type canonised by past pontiffs. Yes, and thankfully, during the century that has just gone, many of these ‘saints’ were thrown out after centuries of veneration All part of the reforming work of good ‘John the 23rd’! Not the result of senility as some quite uncharitably supposed, but rather because of his desire to bring about a reformation within, which went well past any medieval council of Trent. Some of the saints I, myself, have in mind were those within the cause of animal liberation; and some of them were, indeed, far removed from one’s traditional profession of faith. I think of Jill Phipps and of Barrie Horne. I’d offered to conduct the funeral of the former, before Coventry cathedral’s provost intervened with his rigid conditions; and I’d made a one-man protest outside the York hospital of the latter! However, the general opinion of animal rights activists towards Christian clergy hardly endeared them towards my own feeble efforts for their cause. After all, these two comparatively young folk would, literally, lay down their lives for the animals; reminiscent of far off ‘good shepherds’ prepared to lay down their lives for sheep and used by Christ as His supreme analogy Indeed, let us not forget also the sacrifice of her life - for the animals - of Vicki Moore! Tossed repeatedly by a frenzied bull after the latter had been repeatedly stabbed and goaded, Vicki – momentarily carried away – had jumped over in to the ring to acquire close ups of the barbarity taking place.

FROM MORALITY TO Abstract MEDICAL DANGER: ANTI- VIVISECTIONISM IN THE The trajectory of the ideological-literary NOVELS OF THREE LATE- anti-vivisection movement is traced across TH three successive English novels (by Wilkie VICTORIAN/EARLY 20 - Collins, Gertrude Colmore, and Walter 1 CENTURY WRITERS Hadwen) and shown first to be morality- centred and character-focussed in its 2 directionality, but increasingly moving Tony Page towards scientific exposure of the practice as methodologically flawed and dangerously misleading for the human patient. This movement of narrowing focus upon the medical perils of vivisection is shown to reach its culmination in the ก ( Wilkie Collins, medical historiography of novelist Hans Gertrude Colmore Walter Hadwen) ก Ruesch, who abjures formal novel-writing but retains rhetorical and literary styles กก and devices in his presentation of the กกกก vivisection issue. ก ก กก Introduction กก In the past two decades, much revealing research has been carried out on the theme of vivisection in Victorian and early 20th- กก century English literature. PETITION to the European Parliament for the Abolition of VIVISECTION Experiments on animals for the protection of public health, is a scandal. A large number of researchers publicly declare that data collected on animals are useless and misleading for research on humans. BECAUSE OF THE IMMESURABLY GREAT DIVERSITY - GENETIC, ANATOMIC, PHYSIOLOGIC AND METABOLIC - AMONG ALL ANIMAL SPECIES. Substances that are incapacitating , carcinogenic and lethal to one species may be innocuous or even beneficial to another and, with vivisection, it is never possible to foresee the human reaction . In Italy , in the period from 1972 to 1983 only, the licence of 22,621 medical specialities has been revoked, though these medications had originally passed the scrutiny of animal testing. (Source: Bollettino d’Informazione sui farmaci - Drug Information Bulletin - Ministry of Health, n. 8, 08/83) Researchers that today are using alternative methods for the production of medicinal drugs must, nevertheless, employ vivisection too, just for bureaucratic obligations; they are therefore risking invalidating therapies that are useful to humans but harmful to animals and to approve therapies that are vice versa innocuous to animals but toxic or lethal to humans . In cases when there have been claims for serious or lethal collateral damage, one argument for the defence is on one hand that “all tests required by law have been completed” and on the other hand that is acknowledged “the uncertainty of the test on animals”, because humans often respond in a different way. Medicinal drugs are also tested on humans for a few years, but for the long-term serious collateral effects (carcinogenic, on the foetus, on fertility, etc.) we are still relying on animal experimentation.

LLUVIA SIN TRUENOS LA IDEOLOGÍA del Movimiento por los Derechos Animales G. Francione Ni copyright ni copyleft ni hostias. Lee y difunde!!!
