Singer – Tais decisões são um importante avanço. Supor que você tem que pertencer a uma determinada espécie para ter direitos não é uma posição defensável moral. 2 – Como o senhor enxerga os movimentos políticos e sociais de defesa dos animais, hoje, no mundo? Quais são as perspectivas? Singer – São muitos, de tipos muito diferentes. A longo prazo, os mais radicais querem a abolição do especismo, e querem ver o princípio da igualdade de consideração para os interesses de todos os seres incorporados a nossa ética e a nossa lei. Mas outros, bastante razoáveis, visam objetivos mais imediatos, como a supressão de algumas das piores formas de exploração pela fábrica: a gaiola em bateria para as galinhas, celas individuais para as porcas e vitelos, e assim por diante. 3 – Dentre as correntes que hoje norteiam a questão animal, qual o senhor entende ser a mais adequada? Singer – Não é de surpreender que a minha opinião seja a que eu defendia na Libertação Animal e muitos escritos desde! Isto é, o princípio da igualdade de consideração dos interesses, o que significa o fim do especismo. 4 – O senhor sofreu duras críticas, sobretudo nos Estados Unidos e na Alemanha. A que o senhor atribui essas reações? Singer – Principalmente, a idéia de que todos os seres humanos têm algum sacrossanto - talvez, feito à imagem de Deus - e que existe um enorme fosso entre os seres humanos e os animais que não deve ser fechado ou mesmo diminuído. 5 - Recentemente, na Faculdade de Direito, junto com um colega, desenvolvi um seminário que mostrava a forma desumana como são tratados os animais nas experiências científicas. Durante a elaboração, sofremos muitas críticas por vários colegas que afirmavam que, com tantos temas importantes como a fome, crianças de rua, estávamos dando atenção aos animais, inclusive pela própria professora que criou uma ordem de apresentação dos trabalhos pelo critério de “importância do tema”, tendo sido a nossa dupla a última a se apresentar. Após a apresentação, muitos colegas que tinham feito as críticas nos procuraram para desculpar-se, pois desconheciam a gravidade da questão. Como o senhor enxerga esse tipo de conduta, de certa forma, ofensiva? 10 Singer – É em si um exemplo de especismo - o que eu quero dizer é que ele mostra um preconceito contra quem leva a sério os interesses de qualquer ser que não seja um membro da nossa espécie. 6 – Como o senhor explicaria o fato de as suas obras sobre a fome no mundo não terem tido tanta repercussão quanto as referentes à ética animal? Singer – Não tenho certeza. Mas estou escrevendo um novo livro sobre a questão da pobreza global que sairá no próximo ano e espero que haja uma resposta positiva. 7 – Em relação à superpopulação de

This is evidenced by the rapid growth of journals on the question of the animal within the fields of the humanities and social sciences worldwide.1 Yet also outside the academy animals now seem to preoccupy the popular mindset more than ever before. In 2002, the Netherlands was the first country in the world where a political party was established (the so-called “Partij voor de Dieren” or PvdD: Party for the Animals) that focused predominantly on animal issues. Heated discussions about factory-farming, the related spread of diseases (BSE/Q Fever), hunting and fishing practices, the inbreeding of domestic animals, are now commonplace. Animals, as we tend to call a large range of incredibly diverse creatures, come to us in many different ways. We encounter them as our pets and on our plates, animation movies dominate the charts and artists in sometimes rather experimental genres engage in the question of the animal.2 Globally speaking, animals might be considered key players in the climate debate insofar as the alarming rate of extinction of certain species is often taken to be indicative of our feeble efforts at preserving what is commonly referred to as “nature.” At the same time, these rates serve, albeit indirectly, as a grim reminder of the possible end of human existence itself.

    The Ethics of the Meat Paradox Lars Ursin* The meat paradox—to like eating meat, but dislike killing and harming animals—confronts omnivores with a powerful contradiction between eating and caring for animals. The paradox, however, trades on a conflation of the illegitimacy of harming and killing animals. While harming animals is morally wrong, killing animals can be legitimate if done with minimal suffering and respect for the moral status of the animal. This moral status demands the ac- knowledgement of a certain justification for killing animals that makes modesty a virtue of the omnivore. The psychological problem with regard to killing animals can persist even if the moral tension is weakened, but only to a certain degree, since emotions and principles are interdependent in moral reasoning. Virtuous meat consumption demands a willingness to face the conflicting feelings involved in killing animals and to tolerate the resulting tension. INTRODUCTION Humans and animals interact in a number of ways and establish a diversity of relationships. Humans relate to animals as members of the family, as research objects in the laboratory, as guide dogs, trained animals in sports and shows, and still many other kinds of relations. In some of these relations, animals are edible beings. The relation between humans and animals that are eaten is a special one. Like animals sacrificed for research purposes, the animals we eat are killed by us. The acceptance and legitimacy of this killing is thus an essential part of eating animals. By eating animals, we enter into a very intimate relation with the animal. We eat parts of the animal and digest the parts, thus allowing these parts to be absorbed into our bodies.

Not only should we not buy and eat meat, but we should also not purchase fur coats, stoles, and hats, or leather shoes, belts, jackets, purses and wallets, furniture, car interiors, and other traditionally animal-based products for which there are readily available plant-based or synthetic alternatives.   • Hans Ruesch, the Swiss Racing Driver, Best-Selling Author and Pioneer Of
    Hans Ruesch, the Swiss racing driver, best-selling author and pioneer of the antivivisection movement, born on May 17, 1913, died on August 26, 2007, at the age of 94 of cancer in Lugano. He was the last surviving grand prix winner of the interwar "golden age" of motor racing. Two of his novels were made into Hollywood films, and his subsequent publications helped give impetus to the international antivivisection movement. Hans Ruesch in 1967 The son of a German-speaking Swiss father and an Italian-speaking Swiss mother, Ruesch spent the first 13 years of his life in Naples, where his father owned a textile mill. Schooled in Switzerland, he studied law briefly at the University of Zurich before leaving at the age of 19 to pursue his interest in fast cars. His first competitive drive was in 1932 in an MG, but before long he could be seen at the wheel of more potent machines from Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Third place in an Alfa in the 1500cc category at the 1932 Brno grand prix at the Masaryk-Ring in Czechoslovakia was followed by victories in various hill climbs in the Swiss Alps. In his second year, he acquired a three-litre Maserati, with which he picked up further hill climb trophies and set a new world speed record for the standing-start kilometer, averaging 88.33 mph at the Montlhery autodrome outside Paris. Ice racing on frozen lakes was a popular sport at the time, and in 1934 Ruesch and his Maserati 8CM won events on the Titisee and the Eibsee in Germany.

Instead it turned into an ongoing habit. Every time I did some tidying up out would flutter more grubby little notes to myself, written on the backs of envelopes, bank withdrawal forms, anything, and containing yet more names and dates. It seemed, then, a small step from filling in blank squares to letting myself run wild with the myriad little interesting snippets picked up in my hunting and adding the occasional opinion or memory. The beginning and the end were obvious enough. The trouble was the middle; the book was like a concertina — infinitely expandable. And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays.
