PIOMBINO:Stretching out into the sea, Piombino is a town with a rich history and a wealth of safeguarded natural environments. The historic centre is a must for anybody visiting the area, a fine testimonial of the past and of its ancient splendour. It’s a pleasure to stroll down the old alleyways and along the panoramic streets, rediscovering the medieval and renaissance past. The tour proceeds towards Populonia for a short visit. POPULONIA:The medieval village of Populonia is located in a beautiful position overlooking the Tuscan coast. The village is characterized by the presence of an Appiani castle dominated by a quadrangular fortress and a large semicircular tower. Inside the castle it is possible to visit the 13th century Pisan tower and a private museum, where Etruscan and Roman remains are visible.     Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 22 February 2017 The 2017 ERL Emergency Grand Challenge will be hosted in Piombino, Tuscany (Italy) on 15-23 September Following the success of euRathlon 2015, the European Robotics League has entrusted the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), with the organization of the 2017 event devoted to the field of robots as a first response in emergency situations. Dates and venue of the competition were announced on 22 February during a press conference held by CMRE and Municipality Less than 100 minutes, a race against the clock to survey the scene of a simulated disaster, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards, find and help missing workers. This is a challenge that only ground, marine and aerial robots can tackle effectively by working together. And this is the challenge proposed by the international robotics competition which returns again this summer to Piombino (Italy) as part of the major tournament of the European Robotics League – Emergency Robots challenge. The ERL Emergency 2017 event will be locally organised on 15-23 September, near the Enel-owned thermal power plant at Torre del Sale, by the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), which masterminded the euRathlon project’s final competition in 2015 in the same venue. “We are glad to come back to Piombino in a location that has already proven to be perfectly suitable to host this kind of competition, inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident”, says Gabriele Ferri, Technical Director. “Once again the town will be the international capital of robotics for a few days.

Such changes have important effects in producing anomalous structures, mass displacement, rock fracturing, and, in some conditions, hydrothermal mineralizations. In the Campiglia Marittima area, detailed field mapping led to the reconstruction of a local deformation history that overlaps, chronologically and spatially, with regional extension. This local deformation was triggered at the Miocene-Pliocene boundary by the intrusion of a monzogranitic pluton beneath a carbonate sedimentary sequence. The emplacement of the pluton produced a perturbation in the rheological behaviour of the carbonate host rocks, producing transient ductile conditions in the very shallow crust. The carbonate rocks were thermally weakened and flowed laterally, accumulating downslope of the pluton roof, mainly toward the east. As the thermal anomaly was decaying, the brittle-ductile boundary moved progressively back towards the pluton, and large tension gash- shaped volumes of fractured marble were generated.

La direzione Asl Toscana Nord Ovest porta avanti il progetto di riabilitazione senza rispondere ai quesiti e alle propo- ste posti dalla sindaca Ticciati. I sinda- cati, che affermano di essere stati an- che loro esclusi da un confronto con l’Azienda, temono per la sicurezza dei lavoratori; la politica è critica su vari fronti. I sindaci della Sds Valli Etrusche (eccetto il sindaco di Cecina) si sentono scavalcati ed esprimono sconcerto in particolare sul metodo.     QUADRO CONOSCITIVO Ambito n°23 VAL DI CORNIA PROVINCE : Livorno TERRITORI APPARTENENTI AI COMUNI : Campiglia Marittima, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo, Sassetta, Suvereto CENNI DI OROGRAFIA E DI IDROGRAFIA Quest’area coincide parzialmente col bacino del fiume Cornia. Questo fiume nasce dal monte Cornate (la maggior cima delle colline metallifere) ed è lungo circa 50 km. La parte inclusa nell’area è quella che ricade entro la provincia di Livorno, con i bacini degli af- fluenti in destra orografica, come il Ladano (Sassetta); la pianura di Piombino, solcata da alcuni fossi e canali, e quella di S. Vincenzo. Qui esisteva il lago di Rimigliano, “bonificato”, cioè prosciugato nel 1934. La piana di Piombino è compresa fra il “monte” di Piombino (M. Massoncello, m. 286) e il M. Calvi, (m. 646), sulla cui vetta si incon- trano i confini di Suvereto, S. Vincenzo e Campiglia. Il monte di Piombino non è che un’antica isola, saldata al continente dai depositi alluvionali, in un processo che si può vedere, ancora in corso, all’Argentario. Anche nella piana di Piombino esistevano vaste paludi, colmate nel secolo XIX. IL SISTEMA DELLE COMUNICAZIONI Il sistema delle comunicazioni si impernia sulle strade ordinarie e ferrovie che traversano da nord a sud l’area, e sul collegamento fra queste e la città di Piombino. La strada costiera – l’antica Aurelia – venne ricostruita fra il 1828 (anno di inizio delle bonifiche maremmane di Leopoldo II) e il 1840 circa. La strada costiera da S. Vincenzo a Piombino, la vecchia “Strada della Principessa”(la principessa era la sorella di Napoleone, Elisa Baciocchi) è stata adeguata al traffico attuale.

    THE NEW JERSEY ITALIAN HERITAGE COMMISSION Fibonacci and His Impact on Nature Grade Level: 6-8 Time Required: Multiple forty minute periods or assign part as homework Materials Needed: Internet access, graph paper, poster board, optional - interactive white board and items from nature (spiral sea shells, daisies, sunflowers, pine cones, beehive, various leaves); ruler, compass Objectives: Students will be able to: 1. identify Fibonacci as one of the central influences to the widespread use of the Hindo- Arabic numerical system and of mathematical formulas used in western education and commercial applications. 2. briefly describe Fibonacci’s life and accomplishments. 3. develop connections between Fibonacci’s Sequence, The Golden Rectangle, The Golden Spiral and various items in nature. 4. infer what modern mathematics may be like had Fibonacci not traveled to North Africa. They will help you give explicit instructions to your students and help you create rubrics most appropriate for your class. Procedures: 1. Optional Previous Night’s Homework: The students should briefly research the Middle Ages (6th to the 16th Centuries / about 500 A.D. to about 1500 A.D.) with a focus on the history of the Roman numerical system. Roman Numerals were the primary numerical system of Europe during that time. 2. As a follow up to the Previous Night’s Homework, students should discuss their findings in small groups and read the Historical Background component for Leonardo Pisano Bigollo. 3. From the Historical Background, the students should be able to map the progression of numerical calculations of the early 1200s as introduced to Europe by Leonardo Pisano Bigollo also known in later years as “Leonardo Fibonacci.” 4.

    Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus.
