This is a challenge that only ground, marine and aerial robots can tackle effectively by working together. And this is the challenge proposed by the international robotics competition which returns again this summer to Piombino (Italy) as part of the major tournament of the European Robotics League – Emergency Robots challenge.     QUADRO CONOSCITIVO Ambito n°23 VAL DI CORNIA PROVINCE : Livorno TERRITORI APPARTENENTI AI COMUNI : Campiglia Marittima, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo, Sassetta, Suvereto CENNI DI OROGRAFIA E DI IDROGRAFIA Quest’area coincide parzialmente col bacino del fiume Cornia. Questo fiume nasce dal monte Cornate (la maggior cima delle colline metallifere) ed è lungo circa 50 km. La parte inclusa nell’area è quella che ricade entro la provincia di Livorno, con i bacini degli af- fluenti in destra orografica, come il Ladano (Sassetta); la pianura di Piombino, solcata da alcuni fossi e canali, e quella di S. Vincenzo. Qui esisteva il lago di Rimigliano, “bonificato”, cioè prosciugato nel 1934. La piana di Piombino è compresa fra il “monte” di Piombino (M. Massoncello, m. 286) e il M. Calvi, (m. 646), sulla cui vetta si incon- trano i confini di Suvereto, S. Vincenzo e Campiglia. Il monte di Piombino non è che un’antica isola, saldata al continente dai depositi alluvionali, in un processo che si può vedere, ancora in corso, all’Argentario. Anche nella piana di Piombino esistevano vaste paludi, colmate nel secolo XIX. IL SISTEMA DELLE COMUNICAZIONI Il sistema delle comunicazioni si impernia sulle strade ordinarie e ferrovie che traversano da nord a sud l’area, e sul collegamento fra queste e la città di Piombino. La strada costiera – l’antica Aurelia – venne ricostruita fra il 1828 (anno di inizio delle bonifiche maremmane di Leopoldo II) e il 1840 circa. La strada costiera da S. Vincenzo a Piombino, la vecchia “Strada della Principessa”(la principessa era la sorella di Napoleone, Elisa Baciocchi) è stata adeguata al traffico attuale.

A map in the office of Federico Galantini, a Napoleon historian and enthusiast who collects artifacts and documents related to the emperor. The map is the original used by Napoleon’s officers to trace the route which would take the emperor from Fontainbleau to his exile on the Elba Island. The route is traced in black. May 5, 1821. Napoleon Bonaparte dies on the island of St. Helena, where he has been in exile for six years. He is not even 52, and has been sent into exile twice: “twice in the dust”, as a famous Italian poem recites, “twice on the altar”. In his short life, he turned the fortunes of Europe and the world upside down. Napoleon, considered the greatest military strategist in history, was at the head of a huge empire. He conquered countries, boosted economies, wrote laws that are still the basis of the modern codes in Europe. Probably he was also a victim of his own impetus: the Russian campaign marks the beginning of his decline. In May 1814 he is exiled to the island of Elba so that he can no longer be a threat. But he returns to France after only ten months, regaining power in a hundred days and clashing once again with the opponent. He is exiled again to the island of Saint Helena, in the middle of the Atlantic: a place chosen by the English, to have the certainty that he would never come back. And in fact it happened so.

    QUADRO CONOSCITIVO Ambito n°27 ISOLA D’ELBA PROVINCE : Livorno TERRITORI APPARTENENTI AI COMUNI : Campo nell’Elba, Capoliveri, Capraia Isola, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Portoferrraio, Rio Marina, Rio nell’Elba L’isola d’Elba – distante 10 km dal continente – misura 27 km da est a ovest, 18 da nord a sud; é fortemente montuosa, avendo solo il 6% del territorio in pianura I monti e le colline sono in 3 settori, separati da due valichi bassissimi. Da occidente verso oriente: il mas- siccio di M. Capanne (m. 1018), il settore centrale (m. S. Martino e M. Orello, m. 370 e 377) e la striscia prospiciente la costa conti- nentale: da nord a sud, M. Serra, 422 m. (Rio Marina), m. Castello, m. 516 (Porto Azzurro), m. Calamita, m. 413 (Capoliveri). Il settore di ponente è di rocce granitiche, il settore orientale di rocce scistose metamorfiche (ferrifere). L’idrografia è modestissima, date le dimensioni e la forma dell’isola (nessun punto del territorio arriva a distare 4 km dal mare). I mag- giori torrenti discendono dal M. Capanne, (rio di Pomonte, rio di Bovalico, con foce presso Marina di Campo). L’unico centro di una certa consistenza, e con una popolazione superiore ai 10.000 abitanti è Porto Ferraio IL SISTEMA DELLE COMUNICAZIONI Oggi esiste un anello di strade provinciali intorno all’isola (a parte il territorio di Capoliveri): Negli anni ’50 la costa occidentale e quella sud erano servite da mulattiere.
