Hornblower's Ships
Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him. -

PREFACE The following memoir was intended for the series of American Biography edited by- President Sparks. Owing to the suspension of that valuable work, and at the suggestion of its accomplished editor, the present sketch appears in a separate volume. In preparing it, I have been actuated by a desire to ren- der justice to a highly efficient and patriotic American officer, and, at the same time, to preserve some of the incidents and corre- spondence which belong to that period of our country's annals, to which the flight of time only adds new significance and interest. There has been manifest, until within a few 1* VI PREFACE. years, a singular indifference to the histori- cal and biographical details of our revolu- tionary era ; and an absence of that cordial recognition of individual merit in some of the chief actors of that great drama, which confirm, not only the proverbial charge of ingratitude against republics, but justify De Tocqueville's theory with regard to their exclusive devotion to the immediate, and their peculiar insensibility to the lessons of the past. The difficulty experienced in ob- taining many of the facts in this brief and imperfect sketch, as well as the original documents requisite to authenticate them, is sufficient evidence of the forgetfulness and neglect to which the records of American public characters are liable. -

By no means did shipboard life completely extract them from the prejudices of a white-dominated culture, but it often provided them with better opportunities than they had on land. Like their fellow white sailors, black seamen in the Early Republic could count on stable pay with the benefit of room and board. For many, sea service and its pay provided a path to a better life ashore. Because race was not specifically noted in U.S. Navy personnel records at the time, much remains unknown about these men. However, a survey of the status of life for free blacks on shore sheds light on why some may have found seafaring an attractive opportunity. -

That supplement was a condensation of a larger study of the same title prepared by the author in 1992. The information has been derived not only from standard published sources such as the Naval Historical Center’s multi-volume Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships but also from the Records of the Boston Naval Shipyard and the Charlestown Navy Yard Photograph Collection in the archives of Boston National Historical Park. All of the photographs in this publication are official U.S. Navy photographs from the collections of Boston National Historical Park or the Naval Historical Center. Front Cover: One of the most famous ships built by the Charlestown Navy Yard, the screw sloop USS Hartford (IX-13) is seen under full sail in Long Island Sound on August 10, 1905. Because of her role in the Civil War as Adm. David Glasgow Farragut’s flagship, she was routinely exempted from Congressional bans on repairing wooden warships, although she finally succumbed to inattention when she sank at her berth on November 20, 1956, two years short of her 100th birthday. John Adair [1757-1840], eighth Governor of Kentucky, fought in the Northwest Indian War, was a United States Congressman and a delegate to Kentucky's Constitutional Conventions of 1792 and 1799. Suspected of complicity with Aaron Burr, he lost his bid for a full term in the U.S. Senate in 1806; Adair was later acquitted. [Kleber: KENTUCKY ENCYCLOPEDIA, 1992.] Gabriel Slaughter [1767-1830], born in Culpeper County Virginia, moved to Kentucky in 1791. He was a Justice of the Peace of Mercer County and Kentucky's seventh Governor from 1816-1820. Copyright Copyright status is unknown. Citation USS Constitution Museum Collection. Acquisition and Provenance The USS Constitution Museum purchased the collection at auction in 2020. Previously, the collection was descended through the Sever family in private hands for over a century. Biographical Sketch James Sever was one of the six founding captains of the U.S. Navy, and the first captain of the frigate USS Congress. Sever was born in Kingston, Massachusetts in 1761. He graduated from Harvard College in 1781 and was commissioned an ensign in the Continental Army that year. He rose to the rank of lieutenant, serving until 1794. After the American Revolution, Sever worked as a merchant ship captain, but he had no previous naval experience when he was appointed in 1794 as construction superintendent and future captain of USS Congress in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He lost the position when construction on USS Congress was suspended in 1796, following peace with Algiers. In 1798, as the Quasi-War with France was heating up, Sever was recalled and appointed to command the 20-gun ship USS Herald. When construction of USS Congress was 1 USS Constitution Museum Finding Aid completed and the ship was launched in August 1799, Sever was returned to command of that frigate. -

UNITED STATES SHIP CONSTITUTION 1 - Aft by EMign John looch, USN. ,"-, -.-.~..":--~~~~ .......- - _. ~ Welcome aboard USS CONSTITUTION. the oldest fully com- missioned warship in.the world and still a part of the U.S. Navy. She is tangible evidence of America's proud naval heritage and maritime traditions. In 1794. when CONSTITUTION and five other frigates were authorized. the new United States of America had been without a Navy for nine years. During those years. the young nation'seconomy depended upon. and was nurtured by. seaborne commerce with peoples around the world. Those of our merchants who traded in the Mediterranean found it increasingly more difficult to conduct busi- ness because of the attacks of the Barbary (North African) pirates. who knew there was no U.S. Navy to stop them. Finally, on March 27. 1794. Congress passed a bill to establish the U:S. Navy that we know today. CONSTITUTION. laid down that same year, was designed by Joshua Humphreys and Josiah Fox to be powerful enough to defeat any enemy about the same size and fast enough to outsail a stronger opponent. Built by Colonel George Claghorn at Edmond Ham's shipyard in Boston, the live oak. red cedar. white oak. pitch pine and locust, of which she was constructed. came from states ranging from Maine to South Carolina and Georgi •.. The live oak. which grows only along our southeastern coast. came from the sea islands off Georgia. Her masts came from Unity. Maine and South Carolina furnished the pinefor her decks. Some of the canvas came from Rhode Island and New Jersey provided the keel and cannon balls. -
