Despite these successes, publishers still struggle to find the right audience for many comic collections. This report focuses on Drawn & Quarterly’s decision to reprint two comic collections in smaller, kid-friendly editions. It analyzes why D+Q decided to reformat the Janssons’ Moomin comics and Mizuki’s Kitaro manga for specific readerships, with a focus on the emerging genre of crossover literature.

The final volume picks up in the wake of Japans utter defeat in World War II, as a country reduced to rubble struggles to rise again. The Korean War brings new opportunities to a nation searching for an identity.A former enemy becomes their greatest ally as the United States funnels money, jobs, and opportunity into Japan, hoping to establish the country as a bulwark against Soviet Communist expansion. Japan reinvents itself, emerging as an economic powerhouse. Events like the Tokyo Olympiad and the Worlds Fair introduce a friendlier Japan to the world, but this period of peace and plenty conceals a populace still struggling to come to terms with the devastation of World War II.During this period of recovery and reconciliation, Mizukis struggles mirror those of the nation.

  • Local Japan: Case Studies in Place Promotion Manga and Anime Statues As Local Landmarks
Local Japan: Case Studies in Place Promotion Manga and Anime statues as local landmarks Among Japan’s most popular exports of the past several decades are Japanese comics and cartoons, or manga and anime as they are better known. There is a current trend in Japanese cities with ties to manga and anime (either as the home of the author or the setting of the manga/anime itself) that has seen local governments and NPOs contributing to the construction (and promotion) of statues immortalising some of the most popular characters. While cartoonish mascots or Yurukyara are a mainstay of regional promotion in Japan, they usually appear as souvenirs, logos on local attractions and goods, or “in person” at events. On the other hand, “character monuments”, such as the ones explored below serve as more permanent fixtures within a region’s place promotion and identity. They also add another dimension to the ways in which local governments in Japan can capitalise on the spread of Japanese manga and anime as global cultural phenomena. Tetsujin 28-go, (Nagata Ward, Kobe) Nagata ward profile One of the nine wards of Kobe Population: 102,387 Area: 11.46km² Density: 8,580/ km² Kobe within Japan Nagata ward within Kobe Copyright © Hyogo Tourism Association Built in 2009 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995, this 18 meter, 50 tonne steel statue commemorates the work of the late manga artist, Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a Kobe native. The statue itself embodies “Tetsujin 28-go” (Iron Man number 28), the eponymous hero of a serialised manga that ran from 1956.

  • Yōkai – Japońskie Duchy Liminalne
Studia Religiologica 48 (1) 2015, s. 71–81 doi:10.4467/20844077SR.15.005.3134 www.ejournals.eu/Studia-Religiologica Yōkai – japońskie duchy liminalne Michał Spurgiasz Instytut Religioznawstwa Uniwersytet Jagielloński Abstract Yōkai – Japan Liminal Spirits The goal of this paper is to introduce Japanese demonology. The paper focuses on the spirits known as yōkai, providing answers from the incredibly scarce publications in Polish covering issues rela- ted to Japanese demonology. The article examines the origin of the term yōkai and thedifferences in meaning between yōkai, mononoke and ayakashi. It goes on to explain the difference between yōkai and kami, as well as introducing a categorisation of spirits to explain how new yōkai are generated. Keywords: yōkai, Japanese folklore Słowa klucze: yōkai, demonologia japońska Niniejszy tekst stanowi wprowadzenie do tematyki związanej z japońską klasą du- chów pośrednich znanych jako yōkai1. Wykorzystuję termin „duchy liminalne”, ponieważ pojawia się on w ważnej mono- grafii The Book of Yōkai, której autorem jest badacz japońskiego folkloru Michael Dylan Foster. Opisuje on yōkai w następujący sposób: 1 Niektóre kwestie zostały jedynie zaznaczone. Na przykład problem kultu yōkai i wyjątki z nim powiązane. 2 Zarówno w sposób tradycyjny, oparty na metodach znanych już przed laty, jak i przy uwzględnie- niu nowoczesnych technologii.

Drawn & Quarterly: Twenty-Five Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels is a six hundred- page thank-you letter to the cartoonists whose steadfast belief in a Canadian micro-publisher never wavered. In 1989, a prescient Chris Oliveros created D+Q with a simple mandate–to publish the world’s best cartoonists. Thanks to his taste-making visual acumen and the sup- port of over fifty cartoonists from the past two decades, D+Q has grown from an annual stapled anthology into one of the world’s leading graphic novel publishers. With hundreds of pages of comics by Drawn & Quarterly cartoonists, D+Q: 25 features new work by Kate Beaton, Chester Brown, Michael DeForge, Tom Gauld, Miriam Katin, Rutu Modan, James Sturm, Jillian Tamaki, Yoshihiro Tatsumi alongside rare and never-before- seen work from Guy Delisle, Debbie Dreschler, Julie Doucet, John Porcellino, Art Spiegelman, and Adrian Tomine. Editor Tom Devlin digs into the company archives for rare photographs, correspondence, and comics; assembles biographies, personal reminiscences, and interviews with key D+Q staff; and curates essays by Margaret Atwood, Daniel Handler, Sheila Heti, Jonathan Lethem, Deb Olin-Unferth, Heather O’Neill, Chris Ware, and noted comics scholars. D+Q: 25 is the rare chance to witness a literary movement in progress; how a group of dedicated artists and their publisher changed the future of a century-old medium.

International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 2199–2215 1932–8036/20190005 Yōkai Monsters at Large: Mizuki Shigeru’s Manga, Transmedia Practices, and (Lack of) Cultural Politics SHIGE (CJ) SUZUKI1 Baruch College, The City University of New York, USA This study engages in a discussion of yōkai (preternatural monsters in Japanese folklore) characters in Mizuki Shigeru’s manga and their transmedia expansion not as an expression of Japanese cultural tradition, but as an outcome of transmedia adaptation practices (known as “media mix” in Japan) in the modern period by creators, media companies, and other social agents. This study argues that recent Japanese transmedia practices are principally propelled by the specific style of character drawing found in the manga medium and the character-centric multimedia production scheme, which makes manga(-originated) characters—including yōkai characters—versatile for moving across different media platforms. Although transmedia practices can enhance the potential for producing synergies among previously discrete cultural industries and media companies to attain more profits, such a close relationship undermines the autonomy of each media industry, company, and other actors, which can attenuate social critique or cultural politics previously exercised through storytelling in manga, including Mizuki’s yōkai works. By analyzing the transmedia practices that have used Mizuki’s yōkai manga as “original” sources, this article addresses what has been gained and lost when yōkai are migrated into different media platforms. Keywords: Mizuki Shigeru, manga, yōkai, media mix, contents tourism, transmedia storytelling The Specters of Yōkai Are Haunting Japan This article investigates the ubiquity of yōkai in postwar and present-day Japanese mediascapes.
