Despite these successes, publishers still struggle to find the right audience for many comic collections. This report focuses on Drawn & Quarterly’s decision to reprint two comic collections in smaller, kid-friendly editions. It analyzes why D+Q decided to reformat the Janssons’ Moomin comics and Mizuki’s Kitaro manga for specific readerships, with a focus on the emerging genre of crossover literature. -
What Is the Comic Market? What Are Doujinshis?
www.comiket.co.jp A presentation by the Comic Market Preparations Committee February, 2008 Copyright 2007ー2008 COMIKET www.comiket.co.jp Chapter One What is the Comic Market? What are Doujinshis? Copyright 2007ー2008 COMIKET www.comiket.co.jp What are Doujinshis? What are Doujinshi Marketplaces? What are Doujinshis? - Doujinshis are defined in Japanese dictionaries as "magazines published as a cooperative effort by a group of individuals who share a common ideology or goals with the aim of establishing a medium through which their works can be presented." Originating from the world of literature, fine arts, and academia, doujinshis experienced unprecedented growth in Japan as a medium of self-expression for various subcultures centered around manga. - At present, books edited and published by individuals with the aim of presenting their own material are also considered doujinshis. - As a norm, doujinshis are not included in the commercial publishing distribution system. > The primary goal of doujinshi publishing is that of self-expression of one's own works--Ordinarily commercial profits are not the primary rationale for doujinshis endeavors. > Their distribution is limited in scope. What are Doujinshi Marketplaces? - Social functions centered around the display and distribution of doujinshis. - Their scale and function can vary from anywhere between small gatherings taking place in regular conference spaces where only a few dozen circles (doujinshi publishing groups) attend but can be big as the Comic Market where over 35,000 circles congregate. - Outside of Japan, similar forums are usually attached to various manga and anime related public gatherings. In Japan, doujinshi marketplaces are almost always independent public events where the focus is on the individuals and groups that publish the doujinshis. -

Chapter the 14th, in which Karen is Revealed to be a Vile Ingrate By Karen Green Friday January 9, 2009 09:00:00 am Our columnists are independent writers who choose subjects and write without editorial input from comiXology. The opinions expressed are the columnist's, and do not represent the opinion of comiXology. I will also be revealed as chronologically impaired, which is why this column did not appear last week, as it should have (ahem). Um, Happy New Year!! But let's put that aside for the moment: I'd rather talk about the two major challenges I face in building the Columbia University graphic novels collection: money and scope. The money challenge is easy to understand: there's never enough. Because my "real" job— that whole Ancient and Medieval History gig—involves buying books that tend to range from $60 to $200 a pop, I had felt kind of cocky about taking on collection responsibilities for an area where the books tend to run more like $12 to $50. (I mean, Kramer's Ergot 7 is an outlier, isn't it? Please tell me it's an outlier!) That contrast in book prices is why the initial $4,000 fund in 2005 had seemed so flush to me. But it wasn't. Really, really wasn't. Whether we are currently in another Golden Age or not, there is no denying that there are So Damn Many titles coming out that keeping up with the output AND doing good retrospective collecting is a monumental and expensive task. The funds I have are not as expansive as I would like: I have only a little over $11,000 to spend on graphic novels this fiscal year, and that's including secondary literature like the terrific Conversations with Comic Artists series published by the University Press of Mississippi or Douglas Wolk's Reading Comics. -

The final volume picks up in the wake of Japans utter defeat in World War II, as a country reduced to rubble struggles to rise again. The Korean War brings new opportunities to a nation searching for an identity.A former enemy becomes their greatest ally as the United States funnels money, jobs, and opportunity into Japan, hoping to establish the country as a bulwark against Soviet Communist expansion. Japan reinvents itself, emerging as an economic powerhouse. Events like the Tokyo Olympiad and the Worlds Fair introduce a friendlier Japan to the world, but this period of peace and plenty conceals a populace still struggling to come to terms with the devastation of World War II.During this period of recovery and reconciliation, Mizukis struggles mirror those of the nation. -

Local Japan: Case Studies in Place Promotion Manga and Anime Statues As Local Landmarks
Local Japan: Case Studies in Place Promotion Manga and Anime statues as local landmarks Among Japan’s most popular exports of the past several decades are Japanese comics and cartoons, or manga and anime as they are better known. There is a current trend in Japanese cities with ties to manga and anime (either as the home of the author or the setting of the manga/anime itself) that has seen local governments and NPOs contributing to the construction (and promotion) of statues immortalising some of the most popular characters. While cartoonish mascots or Yurukyara are a mainstay of regional promotion in Japan, they usually appear as souvenirs, logos on local attractions and goods, or “in person” at events. On the other hand, “character monuments”, such as the ones explored below serve as more permanent fixtures within a region’s place promotion and identity. They also add another dimension to the ways in which local governments in Japan can capitalise on the spread of Japanese manga and anime as global cultural phenomena. Tetsujin 28-go, (Nagata Ward, Kobe) Nagata ward profile One of the nine wards of Kobe Population: 102,387 Area: 11.46km² Density: 8,580/ km² Kobe within Japan Nagata ward within Kobe Copyright © Hyogo Tourism Association Built in 2009 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995, this 18 meter, 50 tonne steel statue commemorates the work of the late manga artist, Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a Kobe native. The statue itself embodies “Tetsujin 28-go” (Iron Man number 28), the eponymous hero of a serialised manga that ran from 1956.
