On a day in 2000, at a certain pub, the three creators of The Big O got together and to discuss their passionate thoughts…! Kazuyoshi Katayama The director of The Big O, he has also worked on other anime including Sentimental Journey and Giant Robo. An established pro of robot dramas. Keiichi Sato The Big O character and mecha designer/supervisor. He has worked with director Kazuyoshi Katayama since Giant Robo, and has also worked on the City Hunter TV special. Hitoshi Ariga The Big O manga artist (see inside front cover for more information). The Big O is finally starting to be released on video/DVD. Ariga: I‟d like people who weren‟t able to catch it on TV to take this opportunity to check it out Sato: Even people who dismissed it by just saying “I don‟t have cable.” [The Big O was originally shown in Japan on the Wowow cable channel—Ed.] But I guess that‟s how it is. When you can‟t see it, it‟s sour grapes. Ariga: I was hoping that the manga would help to get people interested. I‟m hoping it‟ll get people to buy the DVDs and videos, so it‟s an important piece of media in that respect. I know that I shouldn‟t stray too far. Sato: Well, we‟re going to keep needing your help. (laughs) Ariga: I‟ll do my best. (laughs) Katayama: Well, I‟d like people to enjoy the world of The Big O by both reading the manga and watching the anime. -

Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective. -

The course will focus on major artists, genres, and works of manga produced in Japan and translated into English. 3 units. GE Area: C-2 1 Course Description Manga is one of the most important art forms to emerge from Japan. Its importance as a medium of visual culture and storytelling cannot be denied. The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. Par Sarah et Alixe L’atelier manga est un des clubs du collège du Cingal. Il se déroule le mardi midi entre 13h15 et 14h. On y dessine, lit, mais surtout, on crée un mini film animé avec nos dessins et du montage. Et bien sûr la création d’un fanzine pour les fans de mangas ! Nous avons aussi participé au Prix Manga Caen (voir l’article sur ce sujet). Parfois nous prenons une séance pour faire des origamis.
