CORPORATECorporate Members MEMBERS Introduction Japanese comics, or manga, began making their way stateside in the 1970s, and in recent years, the format has seen exponential growth in terms of sales and popularity. A simple visit to the graphic novel section of your local book store or library reveals that a lot of shelf space is allotted to manga. There’s a reason chain stores like Barnes and Noble are doubling their graphic novel sections: the demand for manga is massive! What does manga offer? Quite literally, there is manga available for every type of reader, from the youngest early reader to the most sophisticated adult reader. Whether you’re looking for comedy, complex science fiction, period drama, historical mem- oir, psychological thrillers, horror, romance, or coming of age stories, there’s all this and more. And it’s not just “kid stuff” — there are manga as elaborate and engrossing as the most acclaimed classic prose. What are some types of book clubs? Book clubs can be held in a variety of places and run by a variety of individu- als. The tips and guidelines offered in this handbook are most applicable to graphic novel book clubs held in the following locations: h Libraries (curated by library staff or by an outside individual) h Schools (independent, non-compulsory programs curated by teachers, students, or parents) h Retail comic and book stores (curated by store employees or members of the community) Why start a manga book club? The reasons to start a manga book club go beyond simply sharing the format we love with the people around us. For librarians, a manga book club is anoth- er avenue to reach the wider community, an opportunity to engage longtime and new patrons alike. Manga can be especially attractive to younger audi- ences and reluctant readers. You’ll see increased circulation of manga (and by extension, graphic novels and other books), as well as more community engagement as you tap into an audience that isn’t always served by libraries. For educators, manga can be an amazing tool for making life-long readers, engaging reluctant readers, and assisting struggling students. For new and re- luctant readers, manga are less daunting than prose and more likely to be read. For advanced readers, they offer a novel and expansive reading experience. In the context of a book club, manga can help students build reading, discussion, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. For retailers, a manga book club can strengthen your ties to the com- munity and bring in new customers. Even if you don’t run the book club yourself, you can partner with your local library and schools to provide books and to host offsite meetings, which can generate new manga fans and increase your sales. Whatever your motivation, a book club is a great way to engage your community with manga and to reach new audiences! Assassination Classroom (VIZ) 2 | Manga Book Club Handbook Know Your Manga A (Very) Brief History of Manga The roots of manga lie within a thousand years of Japanese art and printmaking culture. Some of the earliest examples of Japanese se- quential storytelling date back to religious scrolls from the 11th and 12th centuries. The term manga was coined in the early 19th century by Katsushika Hokusai, who used the word to describe the “whimsical pictures” in his long-running instructional series. The term wasn’t applied to Japanese comics as we know them until the early 20th century. Modern manga began to emerge in the 1920s and 1930s with the children’s magazines Shonen Club (for boys) and Shojo Club (for girls). The popular comic series that ran in the magazines were col- lected into hardcover books. The interest in sequential storytelling — and indeed the skills of several manga artists — was also fueled by kamishibai, or paper theatre shows that employed a series of painted panels to tell a story.

The research method used in this research was Research and Development (R&D) by adapting ADDIE Model of development which covered several steps namely: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The result of this research was a learning media namely Kamishibai by modifying it with the story of Berau folklore East Kalimantan. Based on the result of media experts’ validation, it showed that the response was 100%, while the result of material and language quality was 93%. It can be summarized that the developed media can be categorized as “Decent” or suitable to be used as a learning media. Meanwhile, the result of students’ responses towards the media developed was 81.13%. it can be considered positive of the media of Kamishibai (Japanese-Card Story) was feasible and suitable to be applicated as the learning media in speaking. Delisle and his family spent a year in East Jerusalem as part of his wife’s work with the non-governmental organiza- tion Doctors Without Borders. They were there for the short but brutal Gaza War, a three-week-long military strike that resulted in more than 1000 Palestinian deaths. In his interactions with the emergency medical team sent in by Doctors Without Borders, Delisle eloquently plumbs the depths of the conflict. Some of the most moving moments in Jerusalem are the in- teractions between Delisle and Palestinian art students as they explain the motivations for their work. Interspersed with these simply told, affecting stories of suffering, Delisle deftly and often drolly recounts the quotidian: crossing checkpoints, going ko- sher for Passover, and befriending other stay-at-home dads with NGO-employed wives. Jerusalem evinces Delisle’s renewed fascination with architec- ture and landscape as political and apolitical, with studies of highways, villages, and olive groves recurring alongside depictions of the newly erected West Bank Barrier and illegal Israeli settlements. His drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything.     1 KAMISHIBAI, WHAT IS IT? SOME PRELIMINARY FINDINGS Jeffrey A. Dym From January to May 2007, I spent time researching the history of kamishibai in Japan. Prior to leaving, when my colleagues asked me what I was researching, I would reply kamishibai. Of course, they had no idea what I was talking about. When you tell someone in Japan you are studying kamishibai, they might look at you with a puzzled look, wondering why you are studying that and not something more practical and business oriented but at least they know what you are talking about. For most Americans, the subject is completely arcane. The usual translation of kamishibai is “paper plays.” But I found that telling my colleagues that I was studying paper plays really didn’t clarify things. It often conjured up for them an image of Indonesian puppet theater. Instead, I usually resorted to telling them that I was studying a type of street performance that was popular in Japan during the 1930s and 1950s. Indeed, it is possible to offer a fairly straightforward description of kamishibai. Kamishibai, in a format similar to the ones presented on Kamishibai for Kids, first appeared in 1930 in Tokyo and quickly became one of the most popular forms of mass entertainment in the major cities of Japan. Kamishibai is designed so that virtually anyone can perform it. Though the first kamishibai didn’t have words on the back, within a few years of its debut words were added to the back of the pictures so that anyone could perform it.

Students who were not interested in EFL have suddenly become avid readers ...students get hooked and read [a] whole series within days. (E. Kane, personal communication, January 17, 2007) For Americans, it may be difficult to comprehend the prominence of manga, or comic books, East Asia.1. Most East Asian nations both produce their own comics and publish translated Japanese manga, so Japanese publications are popular across the region and beyond. Japan is well-known as a highly literate society; what is less well-known is the role that manga plays in Japanese text consumption (Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco). 37% of all publications sold in Japan are manga of one form or another, including monthly magazines, collections, etc. (Japan External Trade Organization [JETRO], 2006). Although Japan has less than half the population of the United States, manga in all formats amounted to sales within Japan of around 4 billion dollars in 2005 (JETRO, 2006). This total is about seven times the United States' 2005 total comic book, manga, and graphic novel sales of 565 million dollars (Publisher's Weekly, 2007a, 2007b). Additionally, manga is closely connected to the Japanese animation industry, as most anime2 television series and films are based on manga; manga also provides inspiration for Japan's thriving video game industry.

Olczak Department of Psychology State University of New York-Geneseo This study investigated the effects of reading very violent versus mildly violent comic books on the interpretation of ambiguous provocation situations, independent of trait hostility. 119 introductory psychology students read either a violent comic book, Curse of the Spawn, or a mildly violent comic book, Archie & Friends. After reading the comic books, participants read six short stories in which a child caused a negative event to happen to another child, but the intent of the peer causing this negative event was ambiguous. After each story, participants were asked a series of questions about the harmdoer’s intent, potential retaliation toward the harmdoer, and about the harmdoer’s emotional state. Responses were coded in terms of amount of negative and violent content. Results indicate that those male participants reading the violent comic books responded more negatively on the ambiguous provocation story questions than male participants reading the mildly violent comic books. For females, responding was primarily governed by trait hostility. These data suggest that hostile attributional bias may be influenced by gender, trait hostility, and exposure to violent media. Over the past two decades, voluminous research has focused on media influences (e.g., television, video games) on aggression. These studies consistently find that exposure to violent themes in media is significantly related to aggressive behavior and thoughts (Anderson, 1997, Berkowitz, 1984, Cesarone, 1998). An additional, yet understudied, source of media violence to which individuals are frequently exposed is comic books.

GE Area: C-2 1 Course Description Manga is one of the most important art forms to emerge from Japan. Its importance as a medium of visual culture and storytelling cannot be denied. The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. We will read a number of manga together as a class and discuss them.
