The research method used in this research was Research and Development (R&D) by adapting ADDIE Model of development which covered several steps namely: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The result of this research was a learning media namely Kamishibai by modifying it with the story of Berau folklore East Kalimantan. Based on the result of media experts’ validation, it showed that the response was 100%, while the result of material and language quality was 93%. It can be summarized that the developed media can be categorized as “Decent” or suitable to be used as a learning media. Meanwhile, the result of students’ responses towards the media developed was 81.13%. it can be considered positive of the media of Kamishibai (Japanese-Card Story) was feasible and suitable to be applicated as the learning media in speaking. Keywords: Research & Development (R&D), Kamishibai Media, ADDIE Model Introduction Language is considered vital for human learning English as a foreign language, communication. It is a crucial element of people can engage in international education which can be used as a tool in commerce, advance in their studies, and expressing ideas, thoughts, feelings and participate in scientific activities. -

Delisle and his family spent a year in East Jerusalem as part of his wife’s work with the non-governmental organiza- tion Doctors Without Borders. They were there for the short but brutal Gaza War, a three-week-long military strike that resulted in more than 1000 Palestinian deaths. In his interactions with the emergency medical team sent in by Doctors Without Borders, Delisle eloquently plumbs the depths of the conflict. Some of the most moving moments in Jerusalem are the in- teractions between Delisle and Palestinian art students as they explain the motivations for their work. Interspersed with these simply told, affecting stories of suffering, Delisle deftly and often drolly recounts the quotidian: crossing checkpoints, going ko- sher for Passover, and befriending other stay-at-home dads with NGO-employed wives. Jerusalem evinces Delisle’s renewed fascination with architec- ture and landscape as political and apolitical, with studies of highways, villages, and olive groves recurring alongside depictions of the newly erected West Bank Barrier and illegal Israeli settlements. His drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. Kamishibai, What Is It? Some Preliminary Findings
1 KAMISHIBAI, WHAT IS IT? SOME PRELIMINARY FINDINGS Jeffrey A. Dym From January to May 2007, I spent time researching the history of kamishibai in Japan. Prior to leaving, when my colleagues asked me what I was researching, I would reply kamishibai. Of course, they had no idea what I was talking about. When you tell someone in Japan you are studying kamishibai, they might look at you with a puzzled look, wondering why you are studying that and not something more practical and business oriented but at least they know what you are talking about. For most Americans, the subject is completely arcane. The usual translation of kamishibai is “paper plays.” But I found that telling my colleagues that I was studying paper plays really didn’t clarify things. It often conjured up for them an image of Indonesian puppet theater. Instead, I usually resorted to telling them that I was studying a type of street performance that was popular in Japan during the 1930s and 1950s. Indeed, it is possible to offer a fairly straightforward description of kamishibai. Kamishibai, in a format similar to the ones presented on Kamishibai for Kids, first appeared in 1930 in Tokyo and quickly became one of the most popular forms of mass entertainment in the major cities of Japan. Kamishibai is designed so that virtually anyone can perform it. Though the first kamishibai didn’t have words on the back, within a few years of its debut words were added to the back of the pictures so that anyone could perform it. -

The Diffusion of Foreign Cultural Products: The Case Analysis of Japanese Comics (Manga) Market in the US Takeshi Matsui Hitotsubashi University/Princeton University Abstract This paper outlines the historical development of the US manga (Japanese comics) industry from the 1980s through the present in order to address the question why foreign cultural products become popular in offshore markets in spite of cultural difference. This paper focuses on local publishers as “gatekeepers” in the introduction of foreign culture. Using complete data on manga titles published in the US market from 1980 to 2006 (n=1,058), this paper shows what kinds of manga have been translated, published, and distributed for over twenty years and how the competition between the two market leaders, Viz and Tokyopop, created the rapid market growth. -

Students who were not interested in EFL have suddenly become avid readers ...students get hooked and read [a] whole series within days. (E. Kane, personal communication, January 17, 2007) For Americans, it may be difficult to comprehend the prominence of manga, or comic books, East Asia.1. Most East Asian nations both produce their own comics and publish translated Japanese manga, so Japanese publications are popular across the region and beyond. Japan is well-known as a highly literate society; what is less well-known is the role that manga plays in Japanese text consumption (Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco). 37% of all publications sold in Japan are manga of one form or another, including monthly magazines, collections, etc. (Japan External Trade Organization [JETRO], 2006). Although Japan has less than half the population of the United States, manga in all formats amounted to sales within Japan of around 4 billion dollars in 2005 (JETRO, 2006). This total is about seven times the United States' 2005 total comic book, manga, and graphic novel sales of 565 million dollars (Publisher's Weekly, 2007a, 2007b). Additionally, manga is closely connected to the Japanese animation industry, as most anime2 television series and films are based on manga; manga also provides inspiration for Japan's thriving video game industry. -

Olczak Department of Psychology State University of New York-Geneseo This study investigated the effects of reading very violent versus mildly violent comic books on the interpretation of ambiguous provocation situations, independent of trait hostility. 119 introductory psychology students read either a violent comic book, Curse of the Spawn, or a mildly violent comic book, Archie & Friends. After reading the comic books, participants read six short stories in which a child caused a negative event to happen to another child, but the intent of the peer causing this negative event was ambiguous. After each story, participants were asked a series of questions about the harmdoer’s intent, potential retaliation toward the harmdoer, and about the harmdoer’s emotional state. Responses were coded in terms of amount of negative and violent content. Results indicate that those male participants reading the violent comic books responded more negatively on the ambiguous provocation story questions than male participants reading the mildly violent comic books. For females, responding was primarily governed by trait hostility. These data suggest that hostile attributional bias may be influenced by gender, trait hostility, and exposure to violent media. Over the past two decades, voluminous research has focused on media influences (e.g., television, video games) on aggression. These studies consistently find that exposure to violent themes in media is significantly related to aggressive behavior and thoughts (Anderson, 1997, Berkowitz, 1984, Cesarone, 1998). An additional, yet understudied, source of media violence to which individuals are frequently exposed is comic books. -

The course will focus on major artists, genres, and works of manga produced in Japan and translated into English. 3 units. GE Area: C-2 1 Course Description Manga is one of the most important art forms to emerge from Japan. Its importance as a medium of visual culture and storytelling cannot be denied. The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. We will read a number of manga together as a class and discuss them.
