In this work, we present a dataset of fake news and satire stories that are hand coded, verified, and, in the case of fake news, include rebutting stories. We also include a thematic content analysis of the articles, identifying major themes that include hyperbolic support or con- demnation of a figure, conspiracy theories, racist themes, and dis- crediting of reliable sources. In addition to releasing this dataset for research use, we analyze it and show results based on language that are promising for classification purposes. News Satire and the Climate Debate Abstract: The chapter discusses how ACC is represented in news satire, and how the genre may affect climate change perception. News satire is first a humor genre, primarily intended to make people laugh, and any impact news satire may have on the ACC debate is dependent on this laughter. Based on an examination of a wide selection of news satire sites and video channels, the chapter identifies and discusses the most common types and targets of news satire on ACC. In general, climate deni- alism and public inaction relative to climate change are the primary targets. News stories satirically representing public figures, particularly politicians, as passive and in denial of climate change are also relatively common. Towards the end, the chapter moves to discuss the impact of news satire on climate change perception. News satire often presents a grim outlook on the future of our planet leaving little space for hope. At the same time, however, news satire allows for a perhaps more bearable emotional response to such hopelessness by inviting recipients to laugh at the ACC denier – a ridiculous figure regularly included in the news stories. News satire moreover tran- scends false balance issues in mainstream media and consistently confirms the reality and severity of ACC, thereby highlighting the importance of climate action. 6.1 Introduction The purpose of the present chapter is to present and analyze the treatment of anthro- pogenic climate change (ACC) in news satire. As an arena rife with failings, selfishness, self-contradiction, human shortcomings, and ridiculousness, the climate debate is an open invitation to satire, and news satire makes the most of it.

Existing approaches to capture news satire use machine learning models such as SVM and hierarchical neural networks along with hand-engineered features, but do not explore sen- tence and document difference. This paper proposes a robust, hierarchical deep neural network approach for satire detection, which is capable of capturing satire both at the sentence level and at the document level. The architecture incorporates pluggable generic neural networks like CNN, GRU, and LSTM. Experimental results on real world news satire dataset show substantial per- formance gains demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed approach. An inspection of the learned models reveals the existence of key sentences that control the presence of satire in news. 1 Introduction In the era of the Internet, online journalism is now a common practice. Online news articles have a major contribution in keeping people informed about what is happening in the world. The usage of Internet to spread news comes with the disadvantage of deception. The presence of deceptive and misleading news articles has been around for a while. During the thesis process I researched the history of satirical plays in an ancient contextt the history and popularity of the editorial cartoon and satirical television programs. I primarily focused on satirical television programs because the platform has been studied for decades so there is a wealth of data and research on the subject as well as interesting new developments. I looked at important satirical programs in US history and present programs that are shaking up the genre. In my research of satire as it appears on television I compared the presentation of news events by journalists to the presentation of the same events by satirists. I specifically compared the Edward Snowden interview as presented by Last Week Tonight host John Oliver to ii that of NBC News’ reporter Brian Williams to see how the programs were similar and how they diverged.

HOFFMAN JUSTIN COLLIER University of Delaware, USA This study examines the implications of messages within a fragmented media environment for public opinion about net neutrality. Drawing on media effects theory and an analysis of media messages, it argues that different forms of media use— including consumption of traditional news, partisan cable news, political satire, and streaming video services—can exert distinctive effects on public familiarity with and support for net neutrality. Moreover, it extends research on information subsidy and intertextuality to argue that political satire use can interact with other forms of media use in shaping public responses to complex policy issues such as net neutrality. Using original data from national telephone surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015, the analyses reveal that various forms of media use predicted familiarity with and support for net neutrality. The findings also suggest that exposure to political satire can shape the translation of information obtained from other sources into opinion. This thesis examines content and source cues for levels of satire and source reputability to investigate their effects on perceived believability of satirical news across genres. In experiment one, 80 participants viewed manipulated news stories measured as high and low on satire, while in experiment two, 64 participants viewed manipulated satirical stories with high-reputable and low-reputable sources from entertainment and science genres. Results show perceived believability is different across news genres. Satire in science stories is not easily perceived as high-satire science news is perceived more believable than high-satire entertainment news.

Journal articles found on data sources on the second floor helped me bind together a study on the effects of satire television, in which I titled, The 'Truthiness' of the 'Daily Show Effect ': A Presidency Study. Eastern students, such as me, are very lucky that we can print research articles for free at the library- for this reason I was able to get as much research as I could find (not limiting myself because of cost). I was amazed at all of the prior research and study statistics on the subject.
