Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S. -

Aasif Mandvi, Actor, Writer, Correspondent for the Daily Show
Aasif Mandvi, Actor, Writer, Correspondent for The Daily Show Aasif Mandvi is widely known for his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with John Stewart. Also a renowned theater actor, Mandvi starred in the critically acclaimed production of Ayad Akhtar’s play Disgraced at Lincoln Center. Mandvi’s recent work includes The Internship (2013), wherein he stars alongside Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn. His other upcoming projects include Million Dollar Arm alongside John Hamm. Mandvi is the recipient of the 1999 OBIE Award for his critically acclaimed play Sakina’s Restaurant. Mandvi both performed and conceived this one- man show, which later became the inspiration for his feature film Today’s Special. Additional New York stage credits include the Broadway revival of Oklahoma, directed by Trevor Nunn, Homebody/Kabul by Tony Kushner, subUrbia by Eric Bogosian, and Trudy Blue by Marcia Norman. Trevor Noah Named New Host of 'The Daily Show'
Trevor Noah Named New Host of 'The Daily Show' 03.30.2015 ​Though Daily Show contributor Trevor Noah has only appeared on the show three times, he's about to take over for the biggest name in fake news. Jon Stewart announced his inevitable departure from The Daily Show in February, when speculation began over which current (or past) contributor would be able to fill his shoes. Comedy Central announced Monday that Stewart's successor will be current show contributor, Trevor Noah, a 31-year-old South African comedian who joined The Daily Show last year. Noah will be only the third host of the show, as Stewart took over for the show's first host, Craig Kilborn, in 1999. Fellow Daily Show contributors Jason Jones, Samantha Bee and Jessica Williams followed rumors about their potential quickly, with Jones and Bee leaving Comedy Central for their upcoming show on TBS, and Williams tweeting out that she was honored to be considered but at 25, she has a long way to go before being ready for the honor. He was also subject of the 2012 documentary You Laugh But It's True, which chronicles his comedy career in post-apartheid South Africa. -

This content is dif- ficult to identify because the term "fake news" covers intention- ally false, deceptive stories as well as factual errors, satire, and sometimes, stories that a person just does not like. Addressing the problem requires clear definitions and examples. In this work, we present a dataset of fake news and satire stories that are hand coded, verified, and, in the case of fake news, include rebutting stories. We also include a thematic content analysis of the articles, identifying major themes that include hyperbolic support or con- demnation of a figure, conspiracy theories, racist themes, and dis- crediting of reliable sources. In addition to releasing this dataset for research use, we analyze it and show results based on language that are promising for classification purposes.
