    Introduction: Castles Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the new invasions that were threatening Europe, led the powerful feudal lords to build castles and fortresses on inaccessible heights, at the borders of their territories, along the main roads and ri- vers’ fords, or above narrow valleys or near bridges. The defense of property and of the rural populations from ma- rauding invaders, however, was not the only need during those times: the widespread banditry, the local guerrillas between towns and villages that were disputing territori- es and powers, and the general political crisis, that inve- sted the unguided Italian kingdom, have forced people to seek safety and security near the forts. Fortified villages, that could accommodate many families, were therefore built around castles. Those people were offered shelter in exchange of labor in the owner’s lands. Castles eventually were turned into fortified villages, with the lord’s residen- ce, the peasants homes and all the necessary to the community life. When the many threats gradually ceased, castles were built in less endangered places to bear witness to the authority of the local lords who wanted to brand the territory with their power, which was represented by the security offered by the fortress and garrisons. Over the centuries, the castles have combined several functions: territory’s fortress and garrison against invaders and internal uprisings ; warehouse to gather and protect the crops; the place where the feudal lord administered justice and where horsemen and troops lived. They were utilised, finally, as the lord’s and his family residence, apartments, which were gradually enriched, both to live with more ease, and to make a good impression with friends and distinguished guests who often stayed there.

    SACCHIS, Giovanni Antonio de’, detto il Pordenone SACCHIS (de Corticellis, Regillo), Giovanni Antonio de’, detto il Pordenone – Nacque verosimilmente a Pordenone verso il 1483-84, figlio del mastro murario Angelo da Brescia (o da Corticelle, donde il de Corticellis che lo designa in alcuni documenti). Nel primo documento noto, del 19-21 maggio 1504, Giovanni Antonio è già indicato come pittore e risulta associato a un collega di origine tedesca, Bartolomeo da Colonia: fatto non strano in una città imperiale quale Pordenone. La cultura figurativa settentrionale è del resto assai ben attestata nel Friuli di primo Rinascimento. A conferma della propria emancipazione, il successivo 16 ottobre il Pordenone sottoscrisse i patti dotali con Anastasia, figlia del maestro Stefano di Giamosa. La prima opera pittorica di cui possediamo la data è il trittico ad affresco della parrocchiale di Valeriano, raffigurante l’Arcangelo Michele tra i ss. Valeriano e Giovanni Battista, la cui iscrizione (oggi pressoché illeggibile ma riportata da Venturi, 1908, pp. 457 s.) suona: «Miser Durigo de / Lasin a fato far questo / S. Michiel per sua devotione / MDCCC: VI. Adì 6 / Zuane Antonio de Sacchis / abitante in Spilimbergo». Il 15 gennaio 1507 il Pordenone fu testimone, in Cordovado, alla consegna della dote al pittore spilimberghese Michele Stella (Pecoraro, 2007, pp. 104, 168 s.). L’informazione della residenza di Giovanni Antonio a Spilimbergo è confermata da un documento del 19 ottobre 1507 che elenca il pittore tra i periti incaricati del collaudo di una perduta pala di Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo per Castel d’Aviano (Goi, 1991, p. 45, e le precisazioni di Furlan - Francescutti, 2015, p.

Un’azione conoscitiva di un vasto patrimonio, che può rappresentare lo strumento per avviare delle attività di ricerca finalizzate alla fruizione di importanti memorie del nostro passato. L’itinerario legato alla vicenda artistica di Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis detto “il Pordenone” diviene allora uno dei mezzi operativi per realizzare forme concrete di accoglienza turistica, tenendo conto delle peculiarità della fascia montana e delle sue strutture. Una pubblicazione che illustra la produzione locale di un grande pittore e lo rapporta alle località nelle quali si è articolata la sua presenza. Attraverso questo progetto l’Assessorato Provinciale alla Cultura ed all’Istruzione intende valorizzare gli aspetti significativi e le per- sonalità del proprio territorio in un’ottica di promozione culturale orientata a far conoscere ed apprezzare le testimonianze presenti in ambito locale.
