JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

On-Campus Instruction

Students at JCHS will have the opportunity to attend brick and mortar (BAM) schools and receive instruction face-to-face for the 2020-21 school year. This scenario will include in-person instruction, as well as utilizing the district-wide learning platform, Schoology, in the classroom. This will ensure that students are familiar with the remote platform in the event we have to quickly switch to a school-wide remote setting.

On-campus instruction is highly recommended for any students who experienced difficulty or were unsuccessful in the remote learning platform in the spring of 2020.

Remote Instruction

JCHS will also provide instruction via online format for the 2020-21 school year. Online instruction will be offered through Schoology, Edgenuity, Skype, and/or Zoom instructional formats. Remote instruction will be as rigorous as on-campus instruction. The expectation is that each remote learner will complete a daily remote learning log to verify participation and demonstrate engagement for a minimum of 6 hours/day.

Registration Process for Remote Instruction

• Selection for remote instruction will be included in the registration process for JCHS. • Deadline for remote instruction selection MUST be completed by August 7, 2020. If there are circumstances that cause a student to miss this deadline, please call the JCHS Registrar or any building administrator. • Due to the size of our school and the complexity of building two schedules with one teaching staff, remote instruction selection is an initial commitment to both the fall and spring semesters. The transition from remote learning to on campus instruction cannot be guaranteed at the conclusion of semester 1 due to course allocations, class enrollment numbers, staffing allocations, and resources. JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

Technology and Equipment

Students must have access to the following to successfully utilize the remote learning platform: • Broadband Internet access. • Hot Spots may be provided by USD 475, as needed. • Laptop (provided by district) or desktop computer for use during each school day. • Schoology access; Skype/Zoom capability.

Specialized Programs

Students in specialized programs including but not limited to, Special Education, Section 504, ELL, CTE or Dual Credit will receive information related to their program once schedules are finalized. Individual education plans, accommodations and modifications will be followed in on-campus and remote learning settings, based on the recommendations of each individual’s team. Case managers, Principals, and Counselors will work with each student and their schedule.

Student Expectations and Agreements

• A remote learning contract will be signed by each student, agreeing to the remote learning expectations of the school. • The student will participate daily in all required coursework and remote lessons during normal school hours. A daily remote learning log is required to be kept/submitted, per KSDE guidelines. • A student must pass 3 of 4 classes each quarter to maintain eligibility. Failure to meet this standard will result in the student becoming ineligible, not being ‘in good standing’ with the school and/or meeting with the student’s respective Academy Principal and/or Counselor. • The student will participate in all tutoring sessions and videoconferencing required by the teachers. • Eligible students, participating in remote instruction will be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities. JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

Attendance

• Students are expected to attend their remote learning courses during the time classes are scheduled. • Students who fail to attend their classes, as scheduled, will be recorded as ‘absent.’ Remote learners do fall under Kansas Statutory Attendance Requirements and fall under all Truancy guidelines. • Remote learners who miss class due to illness should communicate with their respective academy office. • An update on submitting remote learning logs will be communicated soon.

Grading

Grades received in a remote instructional format will follow the same grading guidelines as on-campus instruction. See teacher syllabi for details. Teachers and staff will receive additional support and guidance on effective grading practices to ensure that grades are valid and reliable for all students. (Kansas Content Competencies) JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

Parent Expectations and Agreements

The success of online remote learning relies on a true partnership between school, parents and student learners. Parents must support the partnership and success of students by agreeing to the expectations below, which include, but are not limited to:

• Accept the role in structuring academic time spent at home by ensuring your student engages in academic learning for a minimum of 6 hours/day. • Support your student’s physical and mental health by encouraging time for exercise and conversation. • Be mindful of your student’s stress and/or worry and provide opportunities to discuss feelings and emotions both individually and as a family. • Ensure that the student has reliable internet access. • Provide a suitable study space with minimal distractions. • Support your student to manage their time, meet all relevant deadlines, and complete remote learning logs. • Establish positive routines by setting clear guidelines, study times and break times/mealtimes based upon their required remote school schedule. • Set up and access your student’s Learning Management System and Skyward to monitor grades and assignments. • Contact the student’s teacher with any questions. JUNCTION CITY HIGH SCHOOL

Our goal is to provide assistance in removing all barriers for students to be successful in school.

Social and Emotional Needs for Students and Staff
