Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact.

© 2020 Stefan Dmytro Kosovych NOURISHING THE POLITICAL BODY: BANQUETS IN EARLY THIRD REPUBLIC FRANCE, 1878 – 1914 BY STEFAN DMYTRO KOSOVYCH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emeritus Mark S. Micale, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Tamara Chaplin Professor Maria Todorova Professor Jean-Philippe R. Mathy ABSTRACT The most pressing issues of the day in France and in Europe – the place of workers in society, women’s rights, republicanism versus monarchy as the form of government, and expansion of the French empire – were advanced at banquets, ritualized gatherings over food and drink. Drawing on the key historical success of banquets as a means of political mobilization during the prelude to the Revolution of 1848, socialists/anarchists, royalists, imperialists, and feminists turned to the banquet to strengthen their political agendas during early Third Republic France. In Nourishing the Political Body: Banquets in Early Third Republic France, 1878 – 1914, I argue that banquets became a critical site for the construction of political and cultural power and identity by creating distinctive, tightly-knit communities that bolstered a diverse array of causes across the entire political landscape. Using police reports, government documents, accounts of banquet proceedings, newspaper articles, letters, and memoirs, my dissertation analyzes four prominent genres of banquets during late nineteenth and early twentieth-century France: commemorations of the Paris Commune, royalist, empire, and feminist. At these events, different political groups promoted specific agendas that were always ideological, oftentimes subversive, and even revolutionary.

REDEFINING THE “ENGAGÉ”: INTELLECTUAL IDENTITY AND THE FRENCH EXTREME RIGHT, 1898-1968 Sarah E. Shurts A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Dr. Donald Reid Dr. Lloyd Kramer Dr. Jay Smith Dr. Paul Mazgaj Dr. Christopher Browning ABSTRACT SARAH E. SHURTS: Redefining the Engagé: Intellectual Identity and the French Extreme Right, 1898-1968 (Under the direction of Donald Reid.) Intellectual historians today continue to treat French intellectual history as the study of the figures, institutions, and ideas of the Left. This approach ignores the presence of self- identified intellectuals of the Right who conceived of their values, role, communities, and their very identity as intellectuals, differently than those on the Left. By basing discussions of intellectual life on only one of two existing models, historians have done a disservice to the field. This study examines the construction of an alternative intellectual identity by the engaged thinkers of the extreme Right in France between 1898 and 1968. The work of self- proclaimed right-wing intellectuals Maurice Barrès, Ferdinand Brunetière, Henri Massis, Charles Maurras, Abel Bonnard, Ramon Fernandez, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, Alphonse de Châteaubriant, Maurice Bardèche, Jacques Laurent, and Alain de Benoist is used to trace this process of identity construction. From these case studies, it becomes apparent that throughout the twentieth century, intellectuals of the Right felt excluded from the cultural and political world by what they believed to be a hegemonic Left.

© 2016 Mark Bray ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE ANARCHIST INQUISITION: TERRORISM AND THE ETHICS OF MODERNITY IN SPAIN, 1893-1909 By MARK BRAY A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in History Written under the direction of Temma Kaplan And approved by __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey May 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Anarchist Inquisition: Terrorism and the Ethics of Modernity in Spain, 1893-1909 by MARK BRAY Dissertation Director: Temma Kaplan “The Anarchist Inquisition” examines how a nascent international human rights discourse grew out of a broader “ethics of modernity” in response to anarchist terrorism and state repression in Spain from 1893-1909. As authorities enhanced the scope of their arrests and torture and curtailed civil liberties in response to the bombing of a procession in Barcelona in 1896, an international movement for the rights of the victims of the Spanish state was born. In the next decade, several more instances of governmental brutality sparked campaigns that mobilized notions of human rights, even if they did not use the exact term. Using police records, press coverage, and correspondence between diplomats, activists and politicians in archives across Spain, France, the Netherlands, and England, I place Spain at the center of the story of how terrorism catalyzed the development of human rights. ii Acknowledgements First I would like to acknowledge the financial support that made the completion of this dissertation possible. Thank you to the Rutgers History Department for awarding me several Mellon Summer Research Grants and providing me with several years of fellowship.
