JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Photos: Jesse Andrews Jesse Andrews We have one more week of summer sailing classes in August. We may be offering more classes based on the kids school schedules which seems to still be in question. So far it has been a great summer for the participants. It’s been difficult turning away students but we’ve been strict about keeping class numbers at ten or less. We have also taken precautions with staggering class times so that we keep the same bubble of kids. We’ve been doing daily temperature checks and luckily no one has tested over 100° this summer. If we do have a child that gets sick then at least we only have to cancel the class of 10 kids. Keeping the kids outdoors and disinfecting common areas has proved effective and we will continue to do this for a future sailing classes. I know many of you are concerned as I am about this and seeing the groups of kids not always wearing their masks outside. In the past week we’ve been more strict about making sure we all have our face masks on when together on land and we’ve been trying to stay with single-handed sailing or with the same parters for doublehanded. Cameron Barra racing John John Florence and Kai Lenny in the The important thing is that the kids are having a great time and staying safe. Foiling they sailed to Kauai We are fortunate to be able to offer this service to the kids and they are very lucky to have this form of recreation together. In fact we are all lucky to have the yacht club as an outlet to enjoy the beautiful conditions here. I hope Everyone stays considerate to the employees and other members that are of higher risk during these challenging times. Here are just a couple of pictures from the kids enjoying KYC’s summer fun!! Aloha, Jesse

Keith Leitzke set sail for another voyage south of the equator on July 2,2020. Fortunately he was well south of hurricane Douglas when it passed near the Hawaiian Islands July 26. Safe travels Keith! Mike, Pearl and Andy 6 CAL 20 FLEET Craig Fletcher

First thank you Leslie and Andy Johnson and Ryan Rothwell for running the races. The day was a typical Kaneohe Bay day, in other words, perfect. Warm but not hot, (15+) with a few squalls and a little shifty for the last race. We had a great turnout in the Cal 20 fleet with 17 boats. To be quite honest, I was steering and was unable to pay much attention to what was going on in the fleet. On Aqua Flash I was joined by Lauren Easley and Mark Bratton. Mark usually steers, today he was kind enough to let me drive all four races. We were first at all four top marks and basically spent the day laughing and enjoying a great day of sailing. Enough said. On a side note, ours races are run by volunteers, without them we have no racing. The R/C was maned by only three people, which is not enough to set marks, run the races and help out if there is issue on the water. So let's get out and volunteer, let's take as much pride in running races as we do in winning them. Fizz Foster 822

8 DECKHANDS Pam Isayama

Unable to throw any parties, offer any merchandise, or assist with usual activities, the Deckhands have nevertheless been busy. We were shocked recently to learn that there were TERMITES in the Locker. Yuck! An exterminator was called in to take care of the problem, but it did involve a bit of work on our part. The Deckhands moved every bit of merchandise out of the Locker and into our new storage area, the termites were terminated, and the Deckhands then could sort, organize and move every shirt, dress, sweatshirt, KYC cup, etc. back into the lovely clean Locker. It all looks great now.
