As a kid, Alex José Gomes Eduardo started playing soccer in the streets, and became so good at it people began comparing him to the Brazilian soccer legend. He first encountered breaking in 1995 in his hometown, São José do Rio Preto at age 13 and began dancing shortly after. Pelézinho’s style is inspired by elements of the joyful “ginga” approach of Brazilian dance and attitude, which is acrobatic and powerful. Gings is an almost indefinable, mystical quality of movement and attitude possessed only by Brazilians and evident in everything they do. The way they walk, talk, dance and approach everything in their lives. Ginga is what gives Brazilian football players their fluidity and rhythm on the pitch and enables them to 'Joga Bonito' (Play Beautifully). Pelézinho mixes in techniques learned from capoeira and samba to create a creative whirlwind that leaves opponents in his wake. His biggest inspirations are B-Boy Remind (Style Elements) and his beloved son who has inspired him ever since the day he was born. He is a professional dancer, performing in videos, commercials, shows and theatre performances and wants to dance for the rest of his life. Pelézinho feels that he could have easily gotten into a life of trouble because of the environment he grew up in. Many of his childhood friends have already died or gone to prison. He feels that focusing on the dance helped him to make the right decisions in his life. For Pelézinho, a good B-Boy is somebody who shows respect—respect to his family, his fellow B-Boys, the history of B-Boying and the dance itself. His mantra is simple: “Give respect and gain respect by being the best B-Boy you can.” 2.

  • The B-Boy Summit Internationally Acclaimed B-Boy/B-Girl Event
THE B-BOY SUMMIT INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED B-BOY/B-GIRL EVENT Produced by No Easy Props OVERVIEW The B-boy Summit continues to be a major trendsetter in Hip-Hop street dance, art and music culture. Established in 1994, The Summit presented innovative ideas in Hip-Hop culture, offering a conference forum complete with competitions, performances, panels, workshops, and a marketplace for consumer friendly products marketed toward the Hip-Hop community. Never content with success, The B-boy Summit continues its mission to bring the hottest street dance, art, and music above ground to the masses. The B-boy Summit has grown into an internationally acclaimed 3 day festival incorporating all aspects of Hip-Hop in different plateaus, including the most intense battles, rawest circles, theatre performances, a DJ/MC Talent Showcase and live aerosol art painting. The B-boy Summit was created in 1994 out of the need for a community orientated Hip-Hop event that encompassed knowledge of the history of Hip-Hop culture and the skills of B-boying and B-girling. At that point in time B-boys and B-girls didn’t have a platform in which to come together, dance and pay homage to the traditional dance of Hip-Hop. Each year the event has expanded to encompass B-boys, B-girls, MCs, Aerosol Artists, and DJs from across the globe, steadily building into what is now the foremost Hip-Hop cultural event in the world. More recently, The Summit has become one of the most important events for Lockers, Poppers, Freestyle and House Dancers to take part in during The Summit’s Funk Fest.

School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry “Our Lives are Lived in Freestyle”: Social and Dynamic Productions of Breaking and Hip Hop Culture Lucas Marie This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University September 2018 DECLARATION To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgment has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any other university. Signature: ………Lucas Marie………….……….. Date: …28/9/2018… ABSTRACT Based on fieldwork with breakers living in New York, Osaka, and Perth, as well from prior experiences within my field of study, this thesis builds on a growing body of scholarship which examines the productions, expressions and consumptions of hip hop culture. This study looks at how breakers—hip hop dance practitioners—work to produce, sustain and transform hip hop culture in ways that are local and unique. It is not, however, my intention to set out a definitive list of good or bad, authentic or unauthentic, notions of hip hop, or to suggest that there is one true or correct way in which to participate and identify as a member of. What is emphasised are the ways in which breakers, through their embodied dance practices, negotiate, express, understand and conceptualise hip hop. The title of this thesis, “Our Lives are Lived in Freestyle”, is a line from a spoken word poem, by a breaker from Texas named Marlon. In breaking, to “freestyle” means to improvise in the moment; to use the tools one has at their disposal to perform and create.

However, controversy surrounds which specific area in New York created the cultural phenomenon, called Hip Hop. The history concerning which part of New York created this influential and multi-billion dollar movement is documented in 1985. The battle rap included rappers from Queensbridge (MC Shan & The Juice Crew) versus rappers from the South Bronx (KRS-One & Boogie Down Productions). Even though, New York, is noted as the birthplace for Hip Hop culture, Hip Hop’s roots were developed before one city or state declared ownership of the cultures’ creation.

  • A Study of the Nonverbal Emblems and Regulators Used in International B-Boy Competitions
Breaking Down The Codes: A Study of Nonverbal Emblems Used in International B-Boy Competitions Kelsi Watanabe Linfield College Abstract This study explored the use of nonverbal emblems and regulators in international b-boy competitions. Using semiotics, a lexicon of the emblems and regulators was recorded. Then the dimensions from a theory of semantics of dance were applied to understand how b-boy crews (dance teams) from around the world use gesture to communicate with the audience, judges, and other crews. The study analyzed how culture influences the use of emblems and regulators in the intercultural exchange that occurs during the international b-boy competitions, such as Battle of the Year (BOTY) and R16 World Series. Four videos from the 2013 and 2014 BOTY and 2015 R16 were analyzed. The study concluded that cultural dimensions such as collectivism and indulgence influence emblem selection, intensity, and frequency. These nonverbal elements exhibit an overall impact on the battle and the determination of the winner.
