Box 35061, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Abstract: In this paper, the chemistry of some unusual natural products that were isolated from various Tanzanian indigenous plant species during the past 20 years is reviewed. Among the compounds covered in this review are cyclohexane epoxides; heptane derivatives; oxygenated pyrenes; phenanthrene derivatives; flavonoids with uncommon structural frame- works; mono-, bis-, and dimeric prenylated indoles; and variously substituted mono-, sesqui-, and diterpenoids. Keywords: Heptane derivatives; cyclohexane epoxides; flavonoids; indoles; phenanthrenes; terpenoids; antimalarial activities; Uvaria species; Annonaceae species. INTRODUCTION Tanzania is endowed with a great abundance of floral diversity, which is estimated to constitute about 10 000 vascular plant species, of which at least 25 % are considered to be indigenous to the country and among them, about 1200 species so far have been reported to occur exclusively in Tanzania [1]. Although some of the plant species are used as herbal remedies and for other applications, not many studies have been carried out to unravel the chemical constituents of some of the Tanzania plant species, particularly those that are considered to be restricted to this country, some of which have been taxo- nomically described only recently [2–6]. Therefore, in 1984, we initiated chemical investigations for novel and/or biologically active natural products from Tanzanian plant species that are either deployed in traditional medicines, used as natural insecticides, rare species, or those that are threatened with ex- tinction due to among others, human developmental activities. -

We combine published molecular data for the chloroplast regions matK and rbcL with 66 morphological characters surveyed for 73 ingroup and two outgroup species, and use Parsimony and Bayesian approaches to explore matrices with different missing data. All combined analyses using Parsimony recovered the topology Polygalaceae (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). Bayesian analyses with matched morphological and molecular sampling recover the same topology, but analyses based on other data recover a different Bayesian topology: ((Polygalaceae + Leguminosae) (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). We explore the evolution of floral characters in the context of the more consistent topology: Polygalaceae (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae)). This reveals synapomorphies for (Leguminosae (Quillajaceae + Suri- anaceae)) as the presence of free filaments and marginal ⁄ ventral placentation, for (Quillajaceae + Surianaceae) as pentamery and apocarpy, and for Leguminosae the presence of an abaxial median sepal and unicarpellate gynoecium. An octamerous androecium is synapomorphic for Polygalaceae. The development of papilionate flowers, and the evolutionary context in which these phenotypes appeared in Leguminosae and Polygalaceae, shows that the morphologies are convergent rather than synapomorphic within Fabales. -

A new genus, Lukea Gosline & Cheek (Annonaceae), is erected for two new species to science, Lukea quentinii Cheek & Gosline from Kaya Ribe, S.E. Kenya, and Lukea triciae Cheek & Gosline from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania. Lukea is characterised by a flattened circular bowl-shaped receptacle-calyx with a corolla of three petals that give the buds and flowers a unique appearance in African Annonaceae. Both species are extremely rare shrubs of small surviving areas of lowland evergreen forest under threat of habitat degradation and destruction and are provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered and Endangered respectively using the IUCN 2012 standard. Both species are illustrated and mapped. Material of the two species had formerly been considered to be possibly Uvariopsis Engl. & Diels, and the genus Lukea is placed in the Uvariopsis clade of the Monodoreae (consisting of the African genera Uvariodendron (Engl. & Diels) R.E.Fries, Uvariopsis, Mischogyne Exell, Dennettia Bak.f., and Monocyclanthus Keay). -
