    PRESS RELEASE Bremen celebrates “50 Years of Container Handling in Germany” 50 Years Later and Still Going Strong Bremen, April 20, 2016 +++ May 5, 1966 is a historic date: the dawn of the era of containerized transport in Germany. 50 years ago on this date, the first dedicated container ship was unloaded at Bremen’s Überseehafen by BREMER LAGERHAUS-GESELLSCHAFT (today BLG LOGISTICS). Since then, containerization has gone on to revolutionize global trade and transport, and also helped to enable Germany to become an export powerhouse. The idea was as simple as it was revolutionary: cargo packed in a standardized steel box could be transferred to any transportation mode any- where in the world. The standardization of processes accelerated the global transport chain and made globalization possible. In Germany, BREMER LAGERHAUS-GESELLSCHAFT pioneered this pro- cess. Although many players in the shipping and transport industries initially viewed the new steel box with skepticism, BLG’s management grasped the potential early on. Over time, the pioneer became one of the world’s largest shipping line-independent container terminal operators, the EUROGATE Group. EUROGATE was founded in 1999 as a joint venture of the container divisions of BLG LOGISTICS, Bremen, and Hamburg-based EUROKAI, and is today active in eleven seaports in Germany and Europe, including Wilhelmshaven, Germany’s only deep-water port. As container cargos boomed, container handling was relocated from Bremen to Bremerhaven. Today, Bremer- haven is Europe’s fourth largest container port. In academia as in practice, seaports are increasingly viewed as elements in supply chains. It is argued that sea- ports should add value to shippers by aligning their own business activities with shippers’ Supply Chain Management (SCM) strategies and requirements. The implications of this ‘port-SCM’ philosophy are not fully explored, however. In this context, it is especially important to create mutual understanding between shippers, in terms of their SCM strate- gies, and port actors, in terms of services provided. In this paper a framework is developed, which aims to improve mutual understanding between shippers and port actors from a SCM point of view. It thereby aims to contribute to the dialogue on how the port logistics system can be better integrated into shippers’ SCM strategies. Three SCM reference models are analysed and twelve SCM subsystems identified that represent broad design areas of shippers’ SCM strate- gies. Further, the seaport system is discussed in terms of system boundaries and the actors involved. Port actors and SCM subsystems are then combined into one explanatory framework, the SCM-port actor matrix. Finally, applying the matrix, three cases retrieved from academic and trade literature in which port actors are actively involved in conduct- ing shippers’ supply chain strategies are discussed.
