KÜLLIKI VULF ku Masingu suhtes on eesti kirjanduskriitikas esitatud üksteisele üs­ Unagi vastukäivaid seisukohti, kord imetlevaid, kord üleolevaid hinnan­ guid, või siis hoopis oma arvamus ütlemata jäetud. Temast kõneldakse kui ühest eripärasemast autorist eesti kirjanduses, rõhutatakse tema suurt eru­ ditsiooni, tundeerksust ja nõudlikku eetikat. Hando Runnel on esile tõstnud Uku Masingu kui luuletaja nõtket laululist värssi ja pihtimuslikku stiili: "See on ikka tõsimeelne luule: kas palve, pihtimus, pilge või loits, kus leiduv pehmus pole huumor, vaid palvelik pehmus ja tõsidus."1 Aga just seepärast on Karl Muru pidanud Masingut arbujate hulgas erandlikuks. Tema meelest eristus Masing teistest arbujatest eksootilise ja kirgliku palvetajana, kelle palvete "sõnastusliku kuju otsimine sageli ummistus väljendushämarusse".2 Esikkogu "Neemed Vihmade lahte" ilmumisest saati on räägitud ka Masin­ gu müstilisest ja raskesti mõistetavast geeniusest: "Raske on jälgida Masin­ gu ekstaatilisi, hardunud mõttestikke ja pildistikke, milles ajuti tõesti tun­ dub olevat müstika sügavust ja hõõgust, kuigi veelgi sagedamini neis kaldud nägema eeskätt mõttekujutuse ohjendamatust."3 Ja luulekogu "Udu Toonela jõelt" kohta arvab Hellar Grabbi: "Paljud luuletused on tõenäoliselt kirja pan­ dud voolavalt, nii nagu mõte jookseb ja keelevaist juhib. Udu Toonela 25 Keel ja Kirjandus nr 6. 2002 385 kui vastuseks kahele viimasele hinnangule on Hasso Krull mullu iseloomus­ tanud Uku Masingu loojapalet järgmiselt: "...riskantseid figuure ja kombi­ natsioone ei loo ta mitte selleks, et "katsetada", vaid selleks, et pikendada ja nüansseerida oma ekstaatilist inspiratsiooni. Lugejalt oodatakse siin just sa­ masugust suhet, ekstaatilist ja inspireeritud kaasaelamist, täielikku imen- dumist Masingu luule maagiasse. Tekst kui vahend tuleb unustada."5 Ma­ singule kui loojale on tunnuslikuna nimetatud veel tema eraklust, iseenese­ ga olemist, "enese täiustumise läbi Jumalani pürgimist".6 Selliselt iseloo­ mustab Peeter Künstler raamatut "Mälestusi taimedest": "See botaanika- lembene tekst on tegelikult filosoofilise kallakuga enesevaatlus, ühtaegu sii­ ras ja kalkuleeriv. Siin on Masing omaette, oma privaatsuses kindel, inimli­ ku tähelepanu eest turvatud."7 Kriitika on näinud Masingus ka pessimisti, tundnud tema üksildustunde pärast lausa hirmu: "Masingu luuletused on sügava resignatsiooni mõlgutused, palveraamat Jumalale, kes mitte ei heida armu palvetajale."8 Märt Väljataga on esseistist Masingut tema kirglikkuse ja täiuslikkusele püüdlemise pärast pi­ danud veidrikuks: "Kui aga Masingut võtta ennekõike luuletajana ja mitte arutlejana, siis ei pruugi muidugi lasta end tema märatsemisest üleliia häiri­ da: see hakkab paistma lihtsalt ühe idiosünkraatilise veidrusena, mida suur­ tel luuletajatel on ikka ette tulnud."9 Masingu luule sugestiivse stiili pärast on luuletajat sageli ka prohvetiks nimetatud: "Oma teises luuletuskogus - veel­ kord meenutades valge laeva teemat - autoril jääb üle ainult konstateerida, et ta pessimistlikud nägemused on muutunud süngeks tõelisuseks."10 Kõneldak­ se ka marginaalsest mõtlejast, kelle mõistmise aega võib-olla ei tulegi. Esitatud tsitaatides peegelduvad eesti kirjanduskriitika suhted Uku Ma­ singuga ja tema loominguga. Need loominguiseloomustused sobiksid kahele erinevale inimesele, kuid nõnda nimetavad hinnanguandjad ainiti Uku Ma­ singut. Üksteisele vastukäivatena väljendavad nad ilmselt nii tõde kui ka pooltõde, samuti valestimõistmist. Need on aina korduvad ja kinnistunud kujutluspildid. Suhtumiste vastuolulisus väljendab tüüpilist 'teise' ehk 'võõ­ ra' kogemust, mis on saadud kohtumistest Masingu loominguga. Niisiis on all­ järgneva lähtekohaks, et eesti kirjanduskriitikale ei ole Masing tuttav, tema loomingut teatakse, kuid ei tunta täiesti, ja nii on seda käsitletud 'oma' ase­ mel pigem 'võõrana'. Üks põhjusi on kindlasti see, et kodu-ja välis-Eestis po­ le Masingu luulekogud olnud võrdselt kättesaadavad. Luuletaja kodumaal sai Masingut arvustada ainult "Neemed Vihmade lahte" autorina, samal ajal kui pagulaskriitikutel olid kättesaadavad kuus Masingu luulekogu: "Neemed Vihmade lahte" (kordustrükid 1959 ja 1985), "Džunglilinnud" (ilmus 1965 pealkirjaga "Džunglilaulud"), "Udu Toonela jõelt" (1974), "Piiridele pyydes" (1974), "Aerutades hurtsikumeistriga" (1983) ja "Kirsipuu varjus" (1985). Kirjanduse ja kriitika seniste arengusuundade jätkumine oli läbi lõigatud. Muutunud kirjandussituatsioonis olid nihkesse läinud ka va­ rasemad arvamused ja väärtushinnangud. Lisaks takistasid autorite ja ar­ vustajate loovat eneseväljendust sõnavabaduse puudumine, tsensuur ja usu­ elu ebasoodne positsioon ühiskonnas. Masingu bibliograafia ja retseptsiooni jälgimisel märkame seda eriti. Religioosse luuletajana ei olnud tal kodumaal tegelikult võimalust ega soovigi oma loomingut kogudena avaldada, ka mitte 1960-ndate aastate nn sula aegu. Nõukogude perioodi kirjanduskriitika tundis Masingut luulekogu "Neemed Vihmade lahte" järgi ja käsitles luuletaja usulisi elamusi nõukogu­ de ideoloogia seatud raamidest sõltudes vaid esteetilisest ja ratsionaliseeri- vast vaatenurgast. Poliitilised muutused olid mõjutanud kirjandusarvustajaid ka paguluses: nad rõhutasid enam Uku Masingu luule rahvuslikku poolt ja kuuluvust arbujate hulka rahvuslikus kontekstis, märkasid aga vähem tema luule religioossust. Igal juhul olid need lähenemised Masingu luulele nii siin kui ka seal tendentslikud. Selliste hoiakute kujunemise olemuslikuks põhjuseks on kriitika kat­ kendlik ja napp kokkupuude Masingu loominguga. See soodustas kriitikutes võõristavate hoiakute tekkimist ja arvustustes tema teisitiolu rõhutamist. Nõnda kujunesid nõukogude aja kirjanduskriitikas Masingu loomingust stereotüüpsed kujutlused: seda nähti eripärasena ja eraldiseisvana. Iseene­ sest ei ole väärtuste ümberhindamises

    Folkloristic Contributions towards Religious Studies in Estonia: A Historical Outline1 ÜLO VALK University of Tartu Abstract The article outlines the historical development of the study of folk religion and mythology in Estonian scholarship. It shows how the changing ideological and political context and formation of folklor- istics as an autonomous discipline have shaped the construction of its object – Estonian folk religion. The roots of conceptualizing folk religion as an inherited set of survivals of heathendom lies on the one hand in the systematic work of the Lutheran Church in strengthening the Christian worldview by eradicating superstitions. On the other hand, the ideology of national awakening depicted Estonian folklore as a huge and valuable reservoir of pre-Christian traditions, including the oldest survivals of Finno-Ugric cultural heritage. Later, during the period of Soviet occupation, Marxist evolutionary views contributed towards considering folk religion as an archaic form in human devel- opment; in addition, anti-clerical ideology reinforced a stereotype of the people’s adherence to their indigenous religion and contrasting this with Christianity as an alien ideology of oppression. The last part of the article discusses scholarship after the re-establishment of Estonia’s independence in 1991, as the former ideological framework slowly faded away and new conceptual developments emerged. Keywords: folk religion, vernacular religion, Estonian folklore, history of folkloristics From a historical perspective, the roots of religious studies in Estonia are in Protestant theology and in the missionary endeavors of the Lutheran Church. Throughout the 18th century the ethnic Estonians remained cul- turally distant from the Baltic-German elite and were seen as the others, as backward peasantry and a simple workforce for the manors.

    MALEMÄNGU TULEVIK VÕIMALIKU FILOSOOFILISE JA ELULISE EELÕPETUSENA Aleksander Veingold Tolkinud˜ Üve Maloverjan 6. RAKENDUSLOOGIKA EHK MIDAGI MALEMÄNGU UUSIMAST AJALOOST Nagu tõendavad mitmed faktid (vt nt Grodzenski 1983), võib male teatud vaimulaadiga ja piisavalt aruka inimese jaoks saada üheks loomingulise intuitsiooni pidevaks allikaks, sest olles kord selle imepärase struktuuriga tutvunud, ei unusta inimesed seda tavaliselt kunagi päriselt, erinevalt näiteks paljustki sellest, mida meile kõikidele kooliõpetajad mitte kuigi edukalt on õpetanud. Seepärast näib mulle täiesti loomulikuna Bertrand Russelli (1872– 1970) hinnang Ludwig Wittgensteini teosele, kus võeti kasutusele mõiste “keelemäng” (siinkohal võiks meenutada, et Russell hindas Wittgensteini kõrgelt ja tegi omal ajal tema heaks palju): “Pean selles sisalduvat positiivset õpetust banaalseks, negatiivset aga põhjendamatuks. Minu arust pole Wittgensteini Filosoofilistes uurimustes midagi huvitavat ning ma lihtsalt ei saa aru, mis suurt tarkust terve koolkond neilt lehekülgedelt leiab.” (Bartley 1993: 233jj.)
