Archives Looking for a Home: The Cultural Heritage of the Estonian Diaspora in the Estonian Literary Museum Piret Noorhani, Merike Kiipus, Anu Korb Estonian Literary Museum The Estonian Literary Museum (Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum) – at the moment, a state research and development institution – is historically a colony of three archives: the Archival Library (Arhiivraamatukogu, AR, established in 1909), the Estonian Folklore Archives (Eesti Rahvaluule Arhiiv, ERA, 1927), and the Estonian Cultural History Archives (Eesti Kultuurilooline Arhiiv, EKLA, 1929). The archives were born within the Estonian National Museum with the aim to collect publications, folklore and cultural documents in Estonian and about Estonia. This is the task the archives have performed since their establishment – irrespective of the changing systems of government, the formal status of the institution, and the generations of its employees. As a result of continuous work, the archives of the Literary Museum have a wide and versatile collection of material on the history of the Estonian diaspora; the present article can give only a superficial survey. As to the Archival Library and the Cultural History Archives, we limit ourselves to the cultural heritage of the Estonians who fled to the West after World War II, while with the Folklore Archives we include – and concentrate on – the material of the Estonians in the East. This refers to the priorities of different archives in collecting and researching their material, but also to future considerations. The Archival Library Collection and Partners The oldest archives of the Literary Museum, the Archival Library established in 1909, includes material concerning Estonians in the East and Baltica collected since the early 20th century. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2006 The International Writing Program at The University of Iowa 1 Greetings, I am pleased to send you the annual report of the International Writing Program (IWP), which for nearly forty years has offered a unique residency for professional writers from around the world. The literary community created by the IWP, a community of poets, fiction writers, essayists, playwrights and screenwriters from more than 120 countries, stands as a testament to the myriad ways in which service to the word, in every language, can help to bridge differences between peoples and nations divided. Only connect—the governing idea of the program—means that we devote the fall to connecting writers to readers, translators, students and people from every background. And this report offers a glimpse into some of the connections that last year’s writers made. I am also pleased to tell you that the IWP is evolving in a dynamic fashion. In 2006 we hosted our first symposium on the Greek island of Paros, bringing together writers from every corner of the earth to discuss what we hold in common. A Greek film maker made a documentary about the symposium and an e-book of the essays written for the occasion is in the works. As I write these lines we are preparing not only for another symposium, on the subject of justice, but also for a tour of the Middle East designed to introduce some of America’s most prominent writers to their counterparts in Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. In the spring of 2008, in partnership with the University of Iowa’s Young Writers Studio, we will launch a project called Between the Lines, bringing a dozen high school students from six Arabic-speaking countries to take part in a summer writing workshop, which we expect to deepen our connection to this strategic part of the world, creating new networks of writers and readers. -

TERRA MATRIS: CRUSADING, THE MILITARY ORDERS, AND SACRED LANDSCAPES IN THE BALTIC, 13TH – 14TH CENTURIES ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the School of History, Archaeology and Religion Cardiff University ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in History & Welsh History (2018) ____________________________________ by Gregory Leighton Abstract Crusading and the military orders have, at their roots, a strong focus on place, namely the Holy Land and the shrines associated with the life of Christ on Earth. Both concepts spread to other frontiers in Europe (notably Spain and the Baltic) in a very quick fashion. Therefore, this thesis investigates the ways that this focus on place and landscape changed over time, when crusading and the military orders emerged in the Baltic region, a land with no Christian holy places. Taking this fact as a point of departure, the following thesis focuses on the crusades to the Baltic Sea Region during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It considers the role of the military orders in the region (primarily the Order of the Teutonic Knights), and how their participation in the conversion-led crusading missions there helped to shape a distinct perception of the Baltic region as a new sacred (i.e. Christian) landscape. Structured around four chapters, the thesis discusses the emergence of a new sacred landscape thematically. Following an overview of the military orders and the role of sacred landscpaes in their ideology, and an overview of the historiographical debates on the Baltic crusades, it addresses the paganism of the landscape in the written sources predating the crusades, in addition to the narrative, legal, and visual evidence of the crusade period (Chapter 1). -

ELEMENTS OF CHINESE RELIGION Professor Russell Kirkland Department of Religion University of Georgia 1) CONFUCIANISM: A humanistic value-system based on the teachings of Confucius (Kongzi: 551- 479 BCE). It stresses the moral responsibilities of the individual as a member of society. Confucian ideals are to be attained in one's everyday life, through individual moral cultivation and the fulfillment of one's proper roles in society. Though the early thinkers Mencius (Mengzi) and Hsün-tzu (Xunzi) debated human nature, Confucians generally share a common assumption that human nature and/or society are ultimately perfectible. Though called "humanistic," Confucian ideals were originally grounded in a belief that humanity is perfectible because our higher qualities somehow come from "Heaven" (T'ien/Tian). Also, the Confucian tradition includes a liturgical tradition in which Confucius is venerated as a spiritual being. But most Confucian leaders since the 10th century have been humanistic intellectuals leery of any concept of a personalized higher reality. Influenced by Taoism and Buddhism, those "Neo-Confucians" developed sophisticated metaphysical theories as well as meditative practices. Westerners often overlook the Neo-Confucian pursuit of individual "sagehood." 2) TAOISM: Includes both a classical school of thought (fl. 4th-2nd centuries BCE) and an organized religion (fl. 2nd-12th centuries CE). Classical Taoism — represented by texts like the Nei-yeh (Neiye), Lao-tzu (Laozi), Chuang-tzu (Zhuangzi), and Huai-nan-tzu (Huainanzi) — stressed a return to natural harmony with life's basic realities; such harmony, they thought, typified humanity's original state. Researchers have struggled to classify “pilgrims” and “tourists” because these groups overlap to a large extent in terms of their identities while participating in religious activities/sightseeing. To achieve sustainable tourism development for the region with rich religious and cultural characteristics, the present article outlines a process for analyzing the motivation of participants attending religious festival of Mazu in Taiwan and then classifies religious festival participants according to their motivations. Using cluster sampling, a total of 280 responses were obtained and analyzed. The results revealed four different motivation categories: Fun traveler, devout believer, cultural enthusiast, and religious pragmatist. The study concludes that while festivalgoers are influenced by secularization to some extent, the original doctrine of the religion epitomized in the festivals fundamentally retains the essence and spirit of its religious rituals. The findings may have a significant value for the development of religious tourism marketing as it offers a foundation for future research seeking to develop regional cultural and religious sightseeing attractions sustainably. It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. Scandinavian Kalf and Estonian Kalev HILDEGARD MUST OLD ICELANDIC SAGAStell us about several prominent :men who bore the name Kalfr, Kalfr, etc.1 The Old Swedish form was written as Kalf or Kalv2 and was a fairly common name in Viking-age Scandinavia. An older form of the same name is probably kaulfR which is found on a runic stone (the Skarby stone). On the basis of this form it is believed that the name developed from an earlier *Kaoulfr which goes back to Proto-Norse *KapwulfaR. It is then a compound as are most of old Scandinavian anthroponyms. The second ele- ment of it is the native word for "wolf," ON"ulfr, OSw. ulv (cf. OE, OS wulf, OHG wolf, Goth. wulfs, from PGmc. *wulfaz). The first component, however, is most likely a name element borrowed from Celtic, cf. Old Irish cath "battle, fight." It is contained in the Old Irish name Cathal which occurred in Iceland also, viz. as Kaoall. The native Germ.anic equivalents of OIr. cath, which go back to PGmc. hapu-, also occurred in personal names (e.g., as a mono- thematic Old Norse divine name Hr;or), and the runic HapuwulfR, ON Hr;lfr and Halfr, OE Heaouwulf, OHG Haduwolf, Hadulf are exact Germanic correspondences of the hybrid Kalfr, Kalfr < *Kaoulfr. However, counterparts of the compound containing the Old Irish stem existed also in other Germanic languages: Oeadwulf in Old English, and Kathwulf in Old High German. 3 1 For the variants see E. H.
