2015/16 Season

Manly-Warringah Junior Assoc. Inc

The Fathers of Manly Junior Cricket – Jim Randall, Les Gwynne and George Lowe – who commenced coaching classes for juniors aged between 10 and 16 in October 1933. These classes were held at Manly Oval and continued through to the 1950’s when the Manly junior Saturday morning competition was commenced.

On behalf of the Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association, we were all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lachlan Muldoon, a much loved member of the Peninsula Cricket Club, on 13th October 2015 after a very brave battle with brain cancer.

Lachlan loved sport as much as all 10 year olds, but he had a very special affiliation with cricket. He loved nothing more than being in the field with his mates on a Saturday or being at the nets with his father working on his game, and that is the way that he will always be remembered.

Rest in Peace Lachlan Muldoon. May your edges always go for 4, and your full tosses always pick up . Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

The Eric Palmer Bat Award

Since 1966 this prestigious award has been presented to an outstanding performer in the Saturday morning competition. Over the years, many winners have gone on to play grade cricket. The Executive takes into account a cricketer’s performance both on and off the field, efforts in the Saturday morning competition, availability and efforts in the District Representative games, and achievements in cricket outside our competition.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Eric Palmer Bat Award winner is Oliver Davies from Harbord Devils Junior Cricket Club.

Presidents Report

Written by Ross Denny on behalf of the MWJCA …

Welcome to the 2015/16 59th Annual Report for the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association.

First of all, I would sincerely like to acknowledge and thank Danny LeMoy (pictured above), who stood down as President in April 2016, for the many years of outstanding service to the Manly-Warringah cricket community. Danny, who is a life member of the Wakehurst Redbacks, became MWJCA President in 2011 and has been an amazing contributor in junior cricket administration and coaching at Wakehurst and Manly juniors since 1997. Danny has always had a positive influence and instilled an immense sense of spirit and fairness on the many players, volunteers and parents he has come into contact with over many years, and in particular our junior cricketers. I would like to wish Danny all the very best for the future – we have been truly blessed to have someone of his calibre so closely involved with Manly cricket over the last two decades. Sincere thanks Danny, congratulations on a most well deserved Life Membership and all the very best for the future!

2015/16 was another cricket season of outstanding successes and achievements, with healthy increases in total playing numbers, however back-dropped by great sadness early in the season when we learned that one of our much loved junior cricketers, Lachlan Muldoon from the under 13 Peninsula Scorchers, passed away on Tuesday 13th October 2015 after a brave battle with brain cancer. Lachie was passionate about sport, especially cricket and loved nothing more than bowling and with his Dad Brendan in the nets and playing with his mates on a Saturday morning. Our hearts go out to Lachie’s parents Brendan and Tanja, and his younger sister Jaime who he shared an incredibly close and loving relationship with. The “Love for Lachie” fundraising group was established in memory of Lachie Muldoon and provides much needed hope for families with brain tumour diagnosis by providing funds to help find a cure and tackle this terrible disease – more info can be found at loveforlachie.com.au

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Love for Lachie – Under 12 Peninsula Phantoms & St. Augustine's raise a bat in memory of Lachie Muldoon at Newport Oval in October.

A big thank you to all our volunteers! Thanks to all the club delegates and committees of all the associated clubs for their continued dedication and hard work over the season. Thanks to all the coaches, assistance coaches, managers, umpires, scorers and everyone who assisted their teams in making this season such an enjoyable one and for their valuable contributions. On behalf of all the clubs/schools and your children we acknowledge and thank the parents! Without your contributions our association could not function and our boys and girls would not be able to play.

This season we had an increase in player numbers with a total of 158 teams compared to 149 teams last season, ranging from Kangas (U8) right through to U16-18 with well over 1700 players across these teams. Our very successful in2CRICKET centres – Beacon Hill, Collaroy Plateau, Cromer, Forest, Harbord, Peninsula and Wakehurst continued their great work at the absolute grass roots level. In 2015/16 we grew the Milo T20 Blast program with Beacon Hill, Forest, Harbord, Peninsula, Seaforth and Wakehurst paving the way and running T20 Blast Centres. A big thank you to all the centre coordinators and their team of volunteers who all continue to make these programs so worthwhile!

We continued to grow our cricket opportunities for girls this season. We had the T20 Blast Girls format (up to 12 years old) on Friday evenings with over 50 girls participating. The girls had a great time especially with their favourite music blaring in the background during the games. Many thanks to the Forest District and Wakehurst Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report clubs for participating in the T20 Blast. Chris O’Brien (Forest President) and David Nimmo (Wakehurst President) do a terrific job encouraging girls from their clubs to participate. Thanks also to the girls and their parents who supported it!

In addition to this, we had three clubs (Beacon Hill, Forest and Wakehurst) participate in the Sixers Girls Cricket League (SGCL) playing traditional cricket on Saturday afternoons for two age groups – under 13 and under 17. We subsequently had seven of our Manly-Warringah girls combine with North Shore to enter a girls representative team in the Under 13 Mollie Dive DCA competition where each of our girls represented Manly with wonderful spirit. Well done and many thanks to Deanne Hutt, our MWJCA girls cricket representative for doing a fantastic job of championing girls cricket on the Northern Beaches. Deanne was also the driving force behind the girls cricket meet and greet session held at Weldon Oval in March where we have been able to form two all-Manly girls’ rep cricket teams for 2016/17.

Still on girl’s cricket, congratulations to the achievements of Saskia Horley from the Wakehurst club. Saskia was selected in the NSW Women’s Under 18 team this season that completed in the National Championships in January. Saskia was subsequently selected in the Under 18 Australian Women’s Talent Squad - a wonderful season! Congratulations also to Saskia, Gemma Lacey (Beacon Hill/Wakehurst), Annabel Hutt (Wakehurst) and Niamh Bullen (Peninsula) who were each selected in the 2016/17 Cricket NSW Female Academy for their respective age groups – well done girls!

After the success of last season’s “Manly Mini Bash” T20 tournament, it was once again held in February and included teams from U11 to U16-18. We had 44 teams participate over 5 weeks and the feedback from all involved was outstanding. This was the 3rd season that the MMB has been run, and is now being seen as an annual highlight of the MWJCA cricket calendar and should be for years to come. I can’t speak highly enough of Phill Edwards and Kev Davies for their tremendous work in organising and managing the event once again - thanks guys on another wonderful tournament and looking forward to MMB#4!

Congratulations to all the award winners, including premiership winning teams, individual and representative winners. Very Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report special mention to one of our junior club players on an amazing achievement – Sam Jones from the Collaroy Plateau U13 Div 1 team smashed the batting average record to score 467 runs at the amazing season average of 467.0, having only being dismissed once all season – this was the highest junior batting average in any age group in the Association’s recorded history!

We have had another wonderful Representative season at Manly. To all our DCA and Presidents Cup teams, congratulations on an outstanding season! We found plenty of success on the field, with 5 out of 6 DCA teams reaching the finals, and our Under 13 Gee Shield coached by Manly grade player Aidan Baker winning the DCA premiership.

On the Presidents Cup front, all teams competed strongly with our U12 and U14 teams making their respective grand finals, and our U16 team coming equal first place on ladder points (no finals). The U14 team won the premiership having remained undefeated throughout the season – an extraordinary effort. On the back of our U14 team’s amazing season we instituted a new MWJCA perpetual award for the most outstanding Presidents Cup team of the season – known as the Errol Cranney Award in honour of Life Member, Errol Cranney and his contributions to junior rep umpiring over many seasons.

Very special congratulations to three of our junior rep players who have had the distinction of being selected for junior Australian teams. Aiden Bariol and Jack Edwards from our under 16 DCA team, were both selected in the Under 16 Australian team that competed against Pakistan in November. On top of that, Oliver Davies from our Under 15 DCA team - on the back of skippering the U15 NSW School team to a premiership in the National Championships – was selected in the Australian Under 16 team to compete in the 2016 National Under 17 tournament as well as playing Pakistan in Dubai. Outstanding achievements and we are all very proud of you! Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Finally on junior reps, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution over many years of Ross Trewartha, our rep chairman who has stood down from this role for 2016/17. Ross did a wonderful job as Chairman between 2009 and 2011 and once again in 2015/16. We have been extremely fortunate to have Ross so closely involved in both administration and coaching of the Manly junior reps for many years and wish him all the best for the future.

More on the representative season in Ross Trewartha’s Rep Chairman’s report but well done to everyone, including the boys, the magnificent coaches/managers and families!

Congratulations and thanks to the Representative committee for all their efforts!

Also a big thank-you to the Manly District Cricket Club and their committee and players, for all the wonderful work they do through the Manly for Manly program, allowing our juniors to have the opportunity to meet and train with grade cricketers. It continues to be a wonderful initiative.

A big thank you to our hard working MWJCA committee – Danny and I greatly appreciated and valued the efforts of Secretary Denise Gullick, Competition Coordinators Vicki Carden and John Jackson, Treasurer Cathy Hurditch, Web administrator Phill Edwards, Rules administrator Peter Horton, together with the valuable contributions of all the club delegates and age group auditors (Vicki Carden, John Jackson, Heather Eady, Phill Edwards, Kylie Davidson, Chris O’Brien, David Nimmo, Peter Horton), for their tireless and sometimes thankless work behind the scenes to ensure the season runs smoothly as possible and that our kids are playing cricket each week!

I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank Denise Gullick our secretary, who is standing down after 4 seasons in that role. Denise has been a huge supporter of junior cricket and a great servant over the past seasons to the MWJCA – thanks so much Denise for all you have done and all the best for the future!

Finally a big welcome and the very best of wishes to the new executive committee members for 2016/17 – Graham Scheffers (President), David Nimmo (Vice President), Alecia de Angelis (Secretary) and Blake Cousemacker (Rep Chairman).

We look forward to the 2016/17 season!

Ross Denny Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Secretary’s Report

The commencement of Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association 2015-16 season once again proved that cricket on the peninsula is a popular sport for boys and girls of all ages. This season there was again a significant increase in player numbers and a loss of 5 pitches due to maintenance and other circumstances outside of the committee’s control. The continuation of the Saturday afternoon time slot, coordinated with the Senior afternoon competition, has allowed us to accommodate the increase.

The MWJCA executive and committee have worked hard to provide an avenue for junior cricket on the Northern Beaches and the association has offered players and teams the opportunity to participate in a midweek T20, 1 and 2 day games, as well as In2Cricket at local club level and 3 T20 Blast centres over a 14 week program. I would like to thank the committee, club delegates and organisers for their efforts, time and contribution to make this season a success.

Congratulations to the competition winning teams and players on their efforts this year and I extend the Association, and my own, thanks to those who volunteer to coach, umpire, score and make the coffee runs on Saturday mornings!

As Association Secretary, I was responsible for organising the monthly meetings, taking minutes, answering correspondence and assisted with the Annual Presentation Night. This has been my last season and I would like to thank the Association executive – Danny LeMoy, Ross Denny, and Vicki Carden for their ongoing support and assistance during the last 3 years. Best wishes for the continued success of the Association and Junior Cricket on the Northern Beaches.

Denise Gullick - MWJCA Secretary

Manly Mini Bash 2016

In February 2014 MWJCA introduced a T20 competition called “Manly Mini Bash” so that young players can get an understanding of T20 at a young age to become better, well-rounded players and great T20 players of the future. The tournament was successful and received a lot of very positive feedback from both players and parents. In light of that, the tournament has continued to run and is now in its third year.

Some of the driving principles underpinning Manly Mini Bash are that participation comes ahead of winning, and that you play for enjoyment - winning is a bonus. Scores are not entered into MyCricket so players tend to play in a more carefree manner purely for the fun of the game. Bonus points are awarded for achieving certain milestones. These are important factors that make it so enjoyable for players and parents.

Some changes were made to the 2016 Manly Mini Bash #3:  Earlier match times (4:45pm – 7:15pm) to ensure as much light as possible.  Increased from 4 rounds to 5 with the introduction of a knockout semi-final after the 3 preliminary rounds.  Bonus points for maidens.

Once again it was run as a separate tournament and data was not entered into MyCricket. As it was wholly standalone from the Sat morning competition:

 Match results had no impact on the Sat morning league tables  Player scores had no impact on individual player awards at the end of the season  Match results and scores had no bearing on club championship points

An online survey of stakeholders was conducted in the off-season to get general feedback and canvas views on certain changes that were being considered (such as the bonus points system, match start end and end times etc.).

Structure As usual, teams were invited to participate based on their ladder position in the Sat morning competition as of the last match before Christmas 2015. In many instances lower placed teams were subsequently invited to play as some teams chose not to take part. MMB #3 was comprised of the following leagues: Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Under 11 - League 1 Under 12 - League 1 Under 12 - League 2 Under 13 - League 1 Under 13 - League 2 Under 13-15- League 1 Under 14 - League 1 Under 14 - League 2 Under 15 - League 1 Under 16-U18 - League 1 Under 16-U18 - League 2

We aim to involve as many of the Saturday morning junior comp teams as possible, but spaces are limited for logistical reasons (such as ground availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons). Out of this season's 74 teams registered with MWJCA, 44 played MMB in 11 leagues of 4 teams each. 47 teams wanted to play which means we were unable to find spots for only three of them.

Once again, MWJCA provided bright orange balls which not only help to create a sense of difference from other cricket, but also have a very practical impact on visibility which is an important safety consideration with matches completing at 7:15pm. Orange balls are unavailable in the smaller size so pink balls were used for U11s and U12s.

Each team in a league of four played each other once. Knockout semi-finals were then played (1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3) for places in the finals. The bonus system of points for certain playing milestones was largely the same as MMB #2 with the addition of bonus points awarded for maiden overs, to ensure bowlers as well as batters are rewarded.

Finals Semi-finals and finals were decided purely on runs scored with bonus points playing no part. Independent umpires officiated at each final and a BBQ was provided at Passmore.

Thanks go to Mike Pawley Sports for yet again providing prizes for finals. This year Sydney Sixers kindly donated Sixers show bags, and bat autographed by the Sixers players which was awarded to Lachlan Charles (St Augustines) at the finals for the Most Valuable Player award based on earning more bonus points for his team than any other player.

The Future Without Manly Mini Bash many young players would not have the opportunity to play T20 cricket until leaving school. We believe we are one of the very few, if not the only, T20 opportunities for young players in Sydney. With the help of MWDCC we are trying to foster a relationship with the Sydney Sixers which would really add a new dimension and some exciting possibilities to MMB.

The timing of the tournament during February seemed to work well again for players and parents, though consideration is being given to a change so there is a better tie-in with the Big Bash and Sydney Sixers. Feedback will be sought on this from stakeholders before any decision is made to change the timing.

MWJCA would like to thank everyone who took part and hope that players and parents all had fun. It is planned to distribute an online survey again to coaches, managers and parents in order to identify areas of improvement for MMB #4.

2015/16 Girls Cricket

Female cricket participation is on the increase in Manly Warringah! Large numbers of girls played in the entry level girl’s only cricket (T20 Blast) on Friday nights and three clubs participated in the Sixers Girls Cricket League (SGCL) with huge success. We also had participants in the DCA Under 13 Mollie Dive representative competition and a number of girls have been selected for the Cricket NSW Academy.

The association is very keen to continue to develop girl’s cricket on the Northern Beaches. We have set some ambitious goals to endeavour to provide a complete pathway for female cricketers of all ages. There is a bright future ahead for keen girl cricketers, so please encourage all your friends, sisters, neighbours to give it a go!

MILO T20 Blast - Girls For seven weeks before Christmas and seven weeks after, over 50 girls in pink could be seen playing twilight cricket at Melwood Oval on Friday evenings. Between the bowling and shot making many cartwheels were performed to the blaring dance music. This was the second season of the T20 Blast Girls and this year was managed directly by Cricket NSW. However, a huge thank you to the Wakehurst junior player volunteers that were in attendance each week: Anthony Denny and Jake Dobson.

Thanks to all the parents (and siblings) who assisted with umpiring and scoring during the course of the Blast.

Sixers Girls Cricket League Formerly known as the Breakers Junior Cricket League (BJCL) During the off season, the Breakers Junior Cricket League (BJCL) had a name change to align with the highly successful Women’s Big Bash League. The Sixers Girls Cricket League is designed to keep girls in the game after they graduate from the introductory programs MILO in2CRICKET and MILO T20Blast Girls. The Sixers League will in turn feed the Sydney Women’s Grade competition and the Cricket NSW Academy Metropolitan Programs.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

This season the Sixers competition was held for two age groups – under 13 and under 17. It was a 10 a-side T20 format but with a limit of 8 fielders at any time and only 8 players to bat each match. Played with a hard ball, when you’re out, you’re out (with retirement after 8 overs or at 25 runs (under 13) and 40 runs (under 17)).

The Sixers competition was run in two parts, a spring competition that included a number of private school teams and a post-Christmas summer competition held amongst the club teams. The games were played on a Saturday afternoon in a home and away format.

Under 13 Sixers Competition Two teams from Manly Warringah competed in this age group: Forest District and a combined Beacon Hill/Wakehurst team. Both teams had a wonderful season, the girls thoroughly enjoying their first experience of hard ball cricket.

Many congratulations to the Forest District team Forest girls - Under 13 SGCL Premiers who remained unbeaten over both the Spring and Summer competition. This gave them not only one but two titles during the 2015/16 cricket season. What a terrific achievement!

The Beacon Hill/Wakehurst team also performed extremely well finishing a much improved 3rd during the Summer competition.

As a result of the Spring competition win, the Forest team were invited to join the Sydney Sixers women team on the field during their WBBL match at Drummoyne Oval in December. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Under 17 Sixers Competition The Wakehurst Redbacks club fielded an under 17 girl’s team. The average age of the team was only 13, so it was a big ask to play in the under 17 competition. However, the team did exceptionally well finishing equal first in spring competition and 4th in the summer competition.

After their Spring competition Wakehurst girls - Under 17 SGCL Premiers wins the Forest and Wakehurst teams were presented with their winning medals on field at the first ever WBBL game between the Thunder and the Sixers.

Under 13 Mollie Dive Representative Competition Seven Manly Warringah girls joined forces with six North Shore girls to form a team for the under 13 Mollie Dive DCA competition. The Manly Warringah participants were: Abby Taylor, Abi Powell, Alicia Humphrey, Annabel Hutt, Charlotte Camburn, Genevieve O’Brien and Pia Edwards-Ellis. More information on the representative competition can be found later in the Annual Report.

The association is delighted to announce we have already formed entire Manly Warringah Under 13 Mollie Dive and Under 15 Margaret Peden teams for 2016/17.

Representative Chairman’s Report 2015/16

The 2015/16 season continued to build on the strong performances of previous years.

Before I reflect back on another great season, I would like to thank Ross Denny who stepped in as caretaker Rep Chairman when Shane Moran finished midway through last season. Ross is a tireless worker across all levels of junior and senior cricket in the area, and his contribution was formally acknowledged with a well-deserved life membership at the Junior Presentation night. We are lucky to have people like Ross in our community, and we are grateful he continues to serve across many roles.

The Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association’s Representative Cricket program is very demanding and requires dedication, teamwork and a significant commitment. Representing Manly at Rep cricket is the highlight of our player’s junior cricketing days – especially as it involves playing in possibly the toughest and most demanding junior cricket competition in Australia. With the help of a large number of dedicated people, both on and off the Representative Committee, the program maintained the development of two teams in each age group from the Under 11 through to the Under 16.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

In addition to these teams, this season we also had a group of Under 13 girls play as part of the North Shore/Manly Mollie Dive team. The Manly contingent was run by Deanne Hutt and Chris O’Brien. At the recent March trials, we had such a strong response from interested girls, that we will be fielding at least one Manly girl’s rep team in competitions next season. We are excited to have the girls under the Rep umbrella, and look forward to expanding the number of teams in coming years.

Apart from Ross Denny, the 2015-16 Representative Committee, made up of Judy Kenzie, Steve Caproni, Ian Hogg, Kevin Davies, Danny LeMoy and myself, worked throughout the year to prepare the schedule of trials, games, coaches, specialist training, nets, kits and uniforms and many, many other facets of the representative program. Special thanks also to must go to the commitment from our coaches this year in delivering another outstanding effort for Manly Reps, not only in their ability, but also in the time spent working with their squads and teams.

At recent March 2016 trials, numbers were again up on previous years, reaching volumes never previously thought possible on the Northern Beaches. Cricket at all levels is alive and well in our area, and this is in no small part due to the wonderful work of volunteers at all levels across the cricketing community.

We again had 12 teams compete this year, six in the NSW Cricket DCA competition and a further six teams in the Presidents Cup development competitions. Teams also represented Manly in various country carnivals. I was delighted at how our rep season unfolded with results continuing to be strong across all ages. A combination of great alliances with the Manly grade club and Warringah Shires through our pathway program, as well as excellent coaching resources have contributed to our results and bodes well for Manly junior cricket well into the future.

All of our teams competed strongly, with the following results:  2nd in the Presidents Cup, based on overall Association results across all ages in the Presidents Cup competitions.  Under 11 Creak Shield team – mid table – great effort from these boys in their first season.  Under 11 Presidents Cup team – 3rd place.  Under 12 Arch Cawsey Shield team – DCA finalists and Lismore Under 12 Carnival grand finalists and runners-up.  Under 12 Presidents Cup team – 2nd place.  Under 13 Gee Shield team – DCA Premiers. o Tom Phelps – DCA Player of the year and DCA batsman of the year o Luke Morley – DCA Bowler of the year Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

o Winners of the Mike Pawley Award for the most outstanding DCA representative team of the season.  Under 13 Presidents Cup team – 3rd place.  Under 14 Moore Shield team – DCA finalists and undefeated winners of the Newcastle Country carnival.  Under 14 Presidents Cup team – Undefeated Premiers, winners of the Tamworth country carnival. o Winners of the Errol Cranney Award for the most outstanding Presidents Cup representative team of the season.  Under 15 Weblin Shield team – DCA Semi Finalists. o Ollie Davies – DCA player of the year and DCA Batsman of the year  Under 15 Presidents Cup team – 4th place  Under 16 Watson Shield team – DCA Semi Finalists.  Under 16 Presidents Cup team – Equal first place on points.

Congratulations to those players who received higher selection honours, particularly Aiden Bariol and Jack Edwards who were both selected in the Australian Under 16s team during the season, and to Ollie Davies who was selected in the Australian Under 16 team to compete in the 2016 National Under 17 tournament as well as playing Pakistan in Dubai. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

To those players who finished their junior rep careers in Under 16 this season, we wish you well in your cricketing future, and to those parents who have lived through a number of seasons, we thank you for your dedication in helping your sons play this great game. To Paul O’Sullivan and Roy Vumbaca in DCA and Andrew Braund and Rob McKenna in Presidents cup, thanks for all your work over previous seasons and we hope that this season was a fitting farewell, and we look forward to seeing you again with younger ages, at some point in the future.

To the dedicated group of coaches who put in countless hours of planning and preparation, as well as just being there each week for training and matches on Sundays, a huge thanks to all of you for your commitment, enthusiasm, and skilful coaching. In addition to those wonderful parents who volunteered to manage teams, only support from people like you ensure that many tasks get done, and teams run smoothly. Your contribution to the community of Manly rep cricket is immense and invaluable.

Special thanks to Errol Cranney for once again doing a wonderful job as our umpire’s coordinator. I always receive wonderful feedback from the players when Errol adjudicates their matches. Congratulations on your Life Membership Errol – richly deserved!

Thanks as always to Danny LeMoy and the MWJCA Committee for your continued support and encouragement to rep cricket during the season. We value all the great work that the Manly junior committee does to promote cricket for all kids in the Manly areas.

Special thanks to the Manly-Warringah grade cricket club and TravelSIM for their support and sponsorship of the Manly juniors this season – your outstanding contribution was much appreciated. To Joel Mason, Phill Edwards, David Gainsford and Shawn Bradstreet – we appreciated the publicity given to the junior reps each week through the MWJCA and MWDCC websites, social media and Shawn’s weekly article in the Manly Daily.

Thanks also to Heather Eady for liaising with Rob and Luke Kelly at DKG, our Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report other major sponsor for this year, and we look forward to having them on board again next season.

Thanks to Mike Pawley (and Mike Pawley Sports) for your ongoing support and supply of our balls and equipment. Also thanks to the Sydney Sixers organisation for providing Sixers memberships to our Manly junior rep players. Thanks to the Specialised Wheelchair Company, Justin Cox at Athletic Strength Institute, Simon Couch at Chiropractic Solutions and Kookaburra, for your support of the Manly juniors once again.

We are all caretakers of the welfare of cricket in Manly-Warringah and everyone from players, parents, officials, committee members and all involved should feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction in what has been achieved in recent years. Through our pathway program we now have a clearly defined road map from under 11 junior rep cricketers all the way through to Manly 1st grade for generations to follow. I look forward to continuing to work in the Manly-Warringah cricket community, across many different levels. I feel privileged to be involved in cricket in the area, and feel lucky to have the opportunity to be part of such a friendly, committed and wonderful community of cricket, across many different levels and age groups.

I wish everybody well in the future, and hope you all enjoy next season, and make it another great one for cricket in the Manly Warringah area. Cheers Ross Trewartha Outgoing Representative Chairman Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Seven Manly Warringah girls combined with six North Shore girls to form a combined Manly/Shore Under 13 representative team for the 2015/16 Mollie Dive DCA competition. We were a relatively inexperienced team, but what we lacked in experience we made up for in effort and enthusiasm. The parents would like to thank Alan Gibbons and Brigid Robson for their wonderful coaching and managing throughout the competition. Alan’s weekly reports, full of enthusiasm and encouragement, were a highlight for all the players and parents. The team also had opportunities to train with the North Shore and Manly Warringah grade teams, which Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report was a terrific experience for the girls.

The girls all thoroughly enjoyed their rep cricket experiences. The girls formed a wonderful bond and have made lasting friendships. There were many highlights including an overnight stay in Canberra prior to our 2nd game.

The team’s spirit and enthusiasm never waned, no matter what the scoreboard showed. The association can be very proud of the way they portrayed themselves on and off the field – we had countless remarks from umpires and parents about the spirit in the team, the support they show each other and the real delight they take from sharing each other’s successes.

It was also important for them to witness the incredible abilities shown by some of the more experienced players. It gave them the inspiration to train harder and improve their skills.

We are very excited that we are able to field a full Manly Warringah Under 13 team for the 2016/17 season.

Deanne Hutt MWJCA – Girls representative Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Reflections on the Season – Report from coach Alan

It absolutely amazing to think about what we’re achieving for the sport. I would encourage everyone to keep their daughters involved and loving the game, both as players and spectators – it’s truly a beautiful game full of grace and dignity, with a rich history, tradition and spirit that I focused on teaching our team. On that score at least I believe we were hands-down the best in the league.

We started the seasons with a few goals, a set of values and a code, summarised as “Play hard, play fair, have fun … with dignity, grace and respect”. I’m honoured to say that the girls have taken these values to heart in the way they approach the game, treating triumph and disaster with the same breadth of smile.

Thank you to everyone for trusting me to coach the team and for the support from all the parents. Thank you also to Cricket NSW for their investment into the sport and for the extra coaching we had through the season. Thank you to Brigid for amazing management – it doesn’t all happen seamlessly without a lot of effort - and to Deanne for going above and beyond.

The Manly Warringah players….. Abby Taylor Abby’s batting and bowling improved tremendously over the course of the competition. Her best bowling figures were impressive at 1/3. Abby is a fantastic fielder with a great arm. A highlight for Abby in the field was her terrific one-handed catch against New Coasters in round 1.

Abi Powell Abi scored 38 runs during the competition and took the most number of wickets for the team – 6. Her fielding was exemplary at all times. Abi’s enthusiasm in the field was infectious with constant chanting and team encouragement. Abi was asked to captain on 2 occasions and showed she is a definite future leader. As a result of her overall outstanding contributions to the team, Abi was awarded the Manly player of the team.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Alicia Humphrey A pleasure to have in the team who shows a maturity beyond her years. Alicia bowled some terrific spells during the competition, taking 2 vital wickets for the team. Her team camaraderie was impressive – always the first to congratulate her team mates on their success.

Annabel Hutt Annabel’s line and length bowling was a highlight of her season with best figures of 2/1. She took 4 wickets for the team, including 2 against the formidable Bankstown team. Her bowling economy rate of 2.90 was one of the best in the competition. A terrific athlete, Annabel’s outfielding was excellent with fast accurate throws accounting for a number of run outs.

Charlotte Camburn Charlotte’s bowling was much improved over the season with the reward of the second highest wicket haul for the team of 5 wickets. A keen student of the game, always at training and other opportunities, wanting to improve her game at all times. Charlotte has another season in this age group and will be a valuable experienced player for the 2016/17 season.

Genevieve O’Brien Genevieve had a terrific competition scoring the second highest runs for the team (73) at a great average of 18.25. Genevieve also took 5 catches, which was the second highest in the entire competition. Genevieve was also given the duty of captain for a game and showed she also has great leadership abilities.

Pia Edwards-Ellis Pia was one of the youngest members of the team. She was a valuable member, always willing to listen and improve her game. Pia also has another season in this competition and will not doubt improve her game even before the start of pre-season training.

DCA J.H. Creak Shield – Under 11

There were many positives that stood out for this young Under 11 DCA team, despite the results not falling their way for much of the season.

The team posted one win and four losses but they competed strongly in all but one of those games. The results could easily have fallen their way in three of those matches if the team had been able to post 20 or 30 extra runs, or latch onto that key opportunity in the field or with the ball in hand.

Each of the boys showed improvement in key parts of their game throughout the season. For those three boys staying in the Under 11 age group, the experience of this season will be a great asset for their future cricket. For the rest of the squad, they have an excellent base to build upon for next season and a good idea of where to improve.

The fast bowlers were an impressive unit - tall, strong and physically capable of menacing the opposition. Matthew Humphrey was the leading wicket taker for the team, but Milo May and Harrison O’Brien also made the batsmen look uncomfortable and uncertain because of their genuine pace, movement and awkward bounce. Sebastian Bush is also a great prospect who showed he has the potential to string together wicket taking deliveries on a regular basis. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Joey Braund and Will Marks were the leg spinning duo of the team, and more often than not they proved hard to get away. Joey spun the ball both ways and Will kept the ball pitched up and turned it a long way from the bat. They will both continue to take loads of wickets in their junior cricket careers.

With more practice, concentration and application the pace and spin bowlers in this team will improve and have the potential to be the leading bowling attack in their age group.

Our batsman struggled for consistency, but again showed the potential to produce many more runs as they grow and mature. Billy O’Brien, Luke Burgess and Andrew Boulton are all technically very sound, while Matthew Humphrey, Milo May, Sentarou Murata-Davison and Marcus Campbell showed they can produce runs when required.

Matthew was top run scorer, producing a long and steady 48 in his last dig of the season. Billy O’Brien and Luke Burgess also showed great attacking flare at times, rescuing the team on a few occasions. Like their bowling, you can see this batting side producing so much more when they learn to concentrate better and work on shot selection.

The boys also started to learn more about the value of discipline in the field and more aggressive running between wickets as the season progressed.

The team was joined by Zac Chadwick from the Presidents Cup team for the end of season Newcastle tournament. Unfortunately, it was a total wash-out, with most grounds completely submerged under several metres of water after days of torrential rain. It was a credit to the organising association that our team was able to compete in an indoor cricket tournament where they excelled across all areas of the game. Manly made the final of this impromptu competition, with plenty of laughs and cheering along the way.

Thanks to all our parents and supporters who helped make this an enjoyable, fulfilling and fun first season for the team.

The players Andrew Boulton: A natural player with both bat and ball. His full out swinging medium pacers were difficult to deal with and he showed a very solid technique with bat in hand. Andrew will be a great asset to the U11 Manly squad next season. HS 27. BB 1/6

Joey Braund: A dangerous leg spinner who turned it both ways and consistently got the ball to land on a good length. An exceptionally talented fielder and handy lower order batsman. BB 3/11 Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Luke Burgess: An exciting top order batsman who demonstrates power and technique, particularly through the off-side. Luke is also a very handy wrist spinner who possesses a sharp wrong-un. Another young member of the squad who will bolster next season’s U11 ranks. HS 24

Sebastian Bush: A tall and strong fast bowler who could get the ball to rise off a good length to trouble most batsmen. Seb learnt more about control and length as the season progressed, making him an even more complete fast bowler. BB 1/5

Marcus Campbell: Our wicket keeper/captain who showed steady and improving glove work as the season progressed. A natural run scorer who will improve with more time in the middle. HS 20 n.o.

Matthew Humphrey: A great season culminating in leading run scorer and wicket taker. His wickets are built on consistently full deliveries that move away from the right handed batsman. Showed he can both hit out and bat longer innings depending on what the team requires. HS 48. BB 3/12

Jake Hutchings: A good medium pace bowler who can move the ball in to the right handers. Jake is also a handy middle order batman who once set can hit the ball powerfully through the off-side. BB 1/13. He will again be a solid contributor in the Under 11 Manly squad.

Will Marks: A consistently reliable leg spinner who could turn the ball a long way to trouble the right handers. A great team player who bowled extremely well in combination with Joey. BB 2/15.

Milo May: An aggressive fast bowler who produced more unplayable deliveries than any other player in his pool. Can move the ball both ways and with more consistent line, length and focus will become even more dangerous. Can also hit a long ball when required. BB 2/7. HS 26

Sentarou Murata-Davison: A quick bowler who moves the ball away from the right handers when put on a good length. Also an exceptional fielder and catcher, and handy lower order batsman who likes to score fast. HS 12

Billy O’Brien: A great looking batsman who can score runs fast on all sides of the wicket. Can use his feet well and handle all types of bowling. Billy will score many more runs as he learns to apply his concentration skills over longer periods of the team’s innings. HS 34.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Harrison O’Brien: A genuine all-rounder whose full in-swinging fast bowling was a handful for most batsmen. Also a versatile batsman who showed great patience to hold the team’s innings together on more than one occasion. HS 17. BB 2/9.

President’s Cup – Under 11

The first season of representative cricket is a steep learning curve for the boys. Many were still playing or had just finished playing average cricket so 80 overs of cricket in one day against quality opposition was a big step.

We had a number of objectives that we were hoping to achieve through the season. Firstly, the boys played as a team and for each other. That they enjoyed playing for Manly and that they would want to come back next year and do it all again. Enjoying your cricket is important especially on long hot days in the field and when you enjoy what you do you generally do it better. Secondly we wanted to improve as a team throughout the season and as individual players. Finally we wanted to represent Manly with pride, playing the game in the right spirit while playing to win.

With the Presidents Cup starting some weeks after the DCA comp we had plenty of practice sessions and the enthusiasm of the boys was infectious. Ticking off objective one was never going to be a problem. The ways the boys encouraged each other and how they were genuinely happy at others player’s success was great to see.

On the skills side of things we worked hard on three main things. Firstly, running between the wickets. We practiced with centre wicket matches and some early sessions didn’t bode well!! But the more we practiced the better we got and there is Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report no doubt our running got us across the line more than once in tight games. It may take a few more seasons yet to master but the seed has definitely been sown and with the outfields as slow as they are it’s a vital skill. Secondly we worked on bowling full and straight. As obvious as this sounds, the majority of runs at this age group are scored off short balls down the leg side. Our bowler’s ability to keep it full and straight stifled many of the opposition batsman and the number of wickets we took through hitting the stumps was very high. Finally we worked very hard on our fielding. The boy’s insatiable appetite for catching practice often had parents waiting in the car park wondering if it was ever going to end! The boys fielding and catching, apart from a bad day in Newcastle was outstanding for boys of this age. The fact the highest score we conceded in 7 games was a 110 off 40 overs was testament to that.

In the end we won 5 of our 7 matches to finish 3rd on the ladder behind a very strong North Shore team who are bit further ahead in their development at this stage and Newcastle who we had a very good game with. For a young team with two nine year olds and a number of ten year olds the level of performance, the spirit in which we played and the results achieved were excellent and I have no doubt many of these boys will wear the Manly colours for years to come. The team was well captained by Evan Ryan. Being Captain is not easy at the best of times but throughout the season the boys kept their shape in the field without too much advice from the boundary. Many teams needed that help but this team worked it out very quickly and on often very hot Sundays got through their overs very well. Evan also scored some useful middle order runs as well as bowling some very tidy overs of leg spin.

Harry Wood kept very well throughout the season conceding only 4 byes in the last 4 games (160 overs) which is very tidy at any level as well as taking a couple of good catches. Batting was hard work for all teams in the comp. Leading the way for Manly was opener Jasper Pressley who at 9 years old showed great concentration and technique. His 123 runs put him in the top 10 performers in the comp. Jasper was ably supported by Mitch McGrath, who made an excellent 70 in Round 2 and by Jesse Reed, Ollie Kantor- Smith, Zac Chadwick and Harry Wood. All of our bowlers had success during the season with highlight performances from the very consistent Will Pavely, Zac Chadwick, Noah Sturzaker, Ollie Kantor-Smith and Kai Connors. Callum Kennedy bowled his left arm seamers very effectively after returning mid season from a Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report broken arm and Will Brewster our other 9 year old also bowled very economically without much luck. Our 13th man Wilson Crawford also showed a lot of promise while filling in for Callum during the first half of the season.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who formed an equally impressive team off the field. Their support for the whole team was welcomed and our lunches won wide acclaim. Thanks again to all those who scored and umpired and paced the boundary nervously with the coach!

Below are the results and as you can see every player made a contribution to a great first season:

Round 1 Manly 81 defeated Penrith 78 by 3 runs Will Pavely 3/8, Zac Chadwick 2/15 Jesse Reed 23

Round 2 Manly 3/179 defeated North West Sydney 9/105 by 74 runs Mitch McGrath 70, Jasper Pressley 48 Kai Connors 3/8, Zac Chadwick 2/19

DCA Arch Cawsey Shield – Under 12

2015/16 DCA Arch Cawsey Shield Finalists 2016 Lismore Under 12 Carnival Grand Finalists and Runners-up

This season the boys came with a reputation after doing so well last season. Last season the DCA team only lost one game – the grand final, with the Presidents Cup team also only losing one game and winning their grand final.

Once again Ross Denny and Nick Johnson coached the team and were assisted by Mark Patterson as a specialist coach. The coaches did an excellent job - the boys could not want for any more.

The players trained hard during the pre-season and were well tuned for their first game. The first game was a trial against their old foes North Shore, who beat them in the grand final last season. The boys lifted and soundly beat North Shore, then had a resounding victory over Inner West Harbour in the second trial. They were ready and firing for the season proper.

Round 1 was against St. George and this was a match which the boys had to work hard against a stubborn team. It was clear St. George was trying to just bat the fifty overs Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report and not worry about scoring runs. The boys chased the runs down with a few hiccups, but we got the season off with a victory.

For Round 2 we played Hawkesbury. They are always tough and this game was no different. After a stern talk at the tea break the boys played to their ability and won the game by 43 runs.

When the draw was announced, Round 3 against Blacktown was viewed as the tough one. The game did not disappoint. Blacktown bowled tight and fielded well restricting us to 131 for the loss of only two wickets. The boys bowled and fielded well but it was not enough with Blacktown passing our total. The game was highlighted by a fantastic partnership of 108 between Lachie Johnson (51) and Joel Davies (55 no).

Round 4 saw us travel to Newcastle. Thanks to the efforts of the Newcastle coach he managed to find a field at Stockton that was not affected by the rain we had that week. The boys bounced back from the loss to Blacktown playing great cricket to come away with a win over the Novacastrians.

Round 5 was our final home game and saw us up against Inner West Harbour. The Harbour boys played tough, stubborn, determined cricket but the Manly boys got the victory.

We had made it to the quarter finals which saw us travel down the Hume Highway to the nation’s capital. We came up against a strong ACT team but the boys fought hard and were just not good enough on the day.

Once again the boys played good cricket throughout the season. The player’s families all enjoyed the boy’s efforts and achievements on the field. As a unit we enjoyed some great social gatherings, dinner at Narrabeen RSL, dinner at the Canberra Sailing Club and the post-match gatherings. The siblings of the players are all wonderful kids and have a great time together.

We also had a great time at Ballina where we stayed for the Lismore carnival. The boys did Manly proud when they had a sit down lunch in the pavilion at Oakes Oval. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

To the mighty Preso’s we are so proud of your efforts this season. Well done to all the boys, Richard, Vamsy and Jeff.

This season Joel Davies made the Catholic Schools team Polding and James made the Sydney North team which participated in the NSW Schools carnival. Both James and Joel performed well. Joel was selected in the New South Wales School team. An achievement his team mates and all associated with the team were so proud off.

Post season Lachlan, Joel, James, Tom and Ky were all invited to trial for the Cricket NSW Academy. Well done boys and particular congratulations to Joel Davies who was subsequently selected into the Under 13 Cricket NSW Academy for 2016/17. Also, Toby, James and Raja have won selection into the Sydney North Schools squad of eighteen.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Lismore Carnival January saw the mighty Manly 12’s travel to compete in the Lismore carnival and play against representative teams from N.S.W. and Queensland. All the boys performed exceptionally well and most importantly their on field and off field behaviour was exemplary.

Day 1 saw us playing two 25-over matches at Arthur Park, Lismore against South East Queensland and Armidale. The boys had two wins.

Day 2 was a day to remember. The boys played two 25-over matches at a little town 20 minutes out of Lismore called Dunoon. Not only was it a beautiful, quiet little town, but the ending to both matches was incredible. The first match against Hornsby went down to the last ball. Ben Eady was on strike, with Harry Ryals at the non strikers end. Manly needed two runs to win with one ball remaining. Ben pushed the ball to cover and the boys charged for the run to tie the match. Hornsby then took a shot at the stumps, missed and Harry and Ben took a run on the over throw for Manly to win. The boys charged onto the field - an amazing win. In the second game against Central Coast, Ben and Harry batting again needed two runs to win, but this time seven overs to go. In a replay of the first game, Ben pushed the ball to cover and the boys took the single and a throw at the stumps saw an over throw, and victory to Manly. The day at Dunoon will be remembered as a character building day as the boys fought their way out of a number of tight situations.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Day 3 was our semi final against arch rivals North Shore. For the majority of the boys it was their first match on turf. Manly won the toss and sent North Shore in to bat. Toby Cousemacker and Harry Ryals ripped in early to have North Shore in trouble. All the bowlers contributed to bowl North Shore out for 64. James Buchanan and Ned Patterson saw Manly past the total with only two wickets down.

Day 4 - The Final. What an amazing day with the boys beside themselves to be playing on Oakes Oval Lismore. A first class field, grandstands and a long room. Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat and made the most of a flat track scoring 200. All the boys tried hard in the field and with the ball but the ND’s boys did bat well. The Manly boys fell well short but did Manly proud with their sportsmanship and behaviour especially during the sit down lunch. The match was played in front of all the other teams and locals including the Mayor who made mention of the spirit which the game was played.

This is what this team has achieved in the last two years. In Under 11 DCA they made the grand final, and while losing the final, it was the only game they lost all season. They then played in the Newcastle tournament and made the semi final. This season in Under 12 DCA, they made the quarter finals, only losing two games in DCA. They then made the grand final of the Lismore carnival.

They are a great bunch of kids with immense talent. Congratulations on a good season.

U12 DCA Players report 2015-16

Logan Nicey From keeper to opening batsman, “Logo” continued in this position in the season just completed. Relishing the role he made his own last year, he thrived under the pressure of opening and was involved in some tough partnerships with his partner, gutsing it out and setting up the innings for the incoming batsman. He was always energetic in the field, was often brilliant in the field pressuring the batsman and putting them in two minds. He is a great team player and worthy of his place in the team. He is a gentleman off the field and along with his handy off-spin will only improve as the seasons (and training) progress it – was a real pleasure to coach him and good to see him improvement as a genuine DCA batsman through his hard work and dedication.

Lachlan Johnson Lachlan moved to the opening batting position this year and performed very well, scoring 188 runs (DCA and carnival) including his first half century (51 against Blacktown). His aggressive nature was well suited to opening, almost always getting the team off to a fast start. His innings against Blacktown was one of excellent concentration, facing 150 balls and together with Joel put on a fantastic partnership of over 100 in a narrow loss. His keeping was again very good, snaring 10 catches 9 run-outs and 2 stumpings in an all-round performance that is ever improving. Lachie was one of the leadership group of three this season (along with Joel and Jack) and showed a real feel for leadership. He displayed confidence whilst leading the team, either from behind the stumps or with the bat. A great learning experience that I am sure he will continue in the future. He is a fantastic team man who will do whatever is asked of him - as illustrated by him moving to the opening position. Lachlan is a pleasure to have in the team and is more than capable of scoring more heavily next season. A great season Lachie. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Joel Davies Joel had another stellar year, scoring 263 DCA runs at an average of 52.6, including 2 half centuries and a magnificent 91 against the ACT. Joel plays a fantastic brand of aggressive cricket that is not only great for him, but also the team get a great ‘lift’ every time his at the crease and start scoring so freely. Even deliveries on a good length often find their way to ropes. His aggressive mindset seemed to rub off on the team. In the field he is energetic with a great arm, always in a position to create a run- out or a diving catch from nothing. Along with half a dozen wickets, Joel always provides both entertainment and excitement almost every time he pulls on the Baggy Blue cap. Joel was one of the leadership group of 3 this season (along with Lachie and Jack) and showed a real feel for leadership. He displayed confidence in leading the team, either with bat or in the field, directing the team with aplomb. I feel this is another string in Joel’s ever increasing bow. A great learning experience that I am sure he will continue in the future. An excellent year from Joel and has set a benchmark that I am sure all of the team look to emulate. A fantastic season “Curly”.

James Buchanan “Rowdy” had a very good year with the bat, scoring 184 runs, including a very exciting half century against Hawkesbury. His shots through the leg side were great, the timing outstanding, as was illustrated in the 51 he plundered against the “Hawkes”. In the same game, he returned 2/10 at a time where wickets were paramount, changing the game (with help from “Sticky”) in our favour. James had other important scores that helped us out of trouble several times, including in the Lismore carnival where he scored a fighting 34 n.o. against our arch rivals North Shore, on a wicket that was doing a lot off the seam (the boys first game on turf) that led us to victory and a place in the final. In the field “Rowdy” fielded very well throughout the season, causing panic in the running between the wickets of many a nervous batsman. With his bowling, he claimed wickets at vital times and was a great alternative at the bowling crease. Overall, James had a great all-round season he should be proud of. A great team man who says little but provides so much.

Tom Wood “Woody” had a good year with the bat, accumulating 133 runs with a top score of 37 against St George. This knock was the glue that held that innings together. He batted with finesse and authority, something Tom is doing more often. His speed between the wickets and his attitude whilst batting is always a positive. This is also evident with his “leggies” - Tom’s flight and direction always caused the batsman to think before that play a shot. His partnership at the bowling crease with “Sticky” was a definite bonus for us this season, creating chances and placing pressure on all batsmen. Tom’s fielding was another reason the team performed so well in the competition. He is energetic and that rubs off on his teammates in the field. He can field anywhere from Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report slip to fine leg. His speed-a-foot is impressive and along with his strong, accurate arm, saved us many runs in the field this season. Tom is always improving and I believe he is the next in the team to post half centuries. A fine season for “Woody” - well done.

Jack Chick “Chicky” is part of the leadership within the team. Jack leads the team well on the field and is well respected by his peers. Jack worked hard on his batting in the off season which resulted with him playing some important innings at crucial times during the season. A number of times he came to the crease when a number of wickets had fallen and the bowling team was starting to get on top. Jack’s batting this season was not measured on runs scored, however it was measured on his batting for the situation. Many could have buckled under the pressure but not Jack. Jack had good hands and this was on show against Newcastle when he took two superb catches in the slips.

Ned Patterson Promoted to the DCA team from Presidents Cup, “Patto” relished the opportunity and proved himself to be up to the challenge. Ned batted in the lower middle order and scored valuable runs. He is blessed with electrifying speed which saw him accumulate runs using his pace, putting the opposition under pressure and often assisting team mates to rotate the strike. His pace was a valuable asset in the field which enabled the team to build pressure with his presence at cover or mid-wicket, coupled with Ned’s speed across the ground to cut off and attack the ball. Ned bowls sharp medium pace left arm in-swing and claimed wickets with pitched up swinging balls including a season best of 2-0. Ned really excelled at the Lismore carnival. Well done on a fine season “Patto”.

Ben Eady After a great season in Presidents Cup, Benny aka “Scissors” (for his fine ability with the “cut” shot) was duly rewarded with selection in the DCA team. Ben wasted no time in making an impact and proving to be a very important team member. This included a 50 in the trials which gave Ben the belief he belonged in the DCA competition. Ben often scored runs batting at seven, getting on top of opposition Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report attacks with attacking batting and his trade mark cut shot. Ben is an opening or first change bowler, proving he is a genuine all rounder. Ben’s bowling was excellent, always bowling tight and regularly taking wickets. Ben is passionate and gives his all for the team. He was part of the now famous “Dougeady” at Dunoon in Lismore when he and Dougie got the team home in two tight matches. An excellent season from Ben.

Harry Ryals “Dougie” is a much loved and very popular team member who is a front line bowler that moves the ball through the air and off the pitch. Harry has the ability to build pressure and make scoring difficult for the batsmen. Dougie produced an amazing spell at Stockton against Newcastle taking 3/8 and ensuring the Manly boys got the victory. Harry was the leading wicket taker this season, taking wickets at critical times. His swinging deliveries often troubled opposition batsmen to the point that we decided to open the bowling with him in several matches. He didn’t disappoint. While having limited batting opportunities, Harry always contributed when he could. Was one of the parties for the now famous “Dougeady” at Dunoon in Lismore when he and Ben got the team home in two tight matches with some outstanding running between wickets text- book batting.

Ky Broome Once again “Sticky” stamped himself as one of the premier finger spinners in the competition. Ky was used at all stages of an innings and is capable of bowling tight at any stage of any innings against top order quality batsmen or tail enders having a bash. He regularly claimed wickets and is a vital part of our strong bowling line up. Ky had limited opportunities with the bat but when he did get the chance he always pushed the quick singles and looked to find the boundary. Well done Ky. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Toby Cousemacker Toby bowled well this season. Sometimes statics do not tell an accurate story and this was the case for Toby. Toby opened the bowling in every game and always had the opposition on the back with tight bowling. He was only going for a couple of runs in his opening spells, which always put the batting team behind from the word go. Toby would finish the innings out and continue to bowl tight, stopping teams who were attempting to accelerate the run rate. He was very unlucky with dropped catches and turned down decisions, but remained positive and always built pressure bowling as a unit with his team mates. While limited opportunities with the bat, he never let the team down and is capable of scoring runs.

Hugo Cawsey Another good season. Hugo is another whose statistics do not tell an accurate story. He was part of the bowling unit who built pressure with tight bowling. “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link” - Hugo was a strong link in the bowling chain. Has the ability to bowl a quick ball and blast through a batsman. Hugo worked hard on his batting and has really improved his technique. With limited opportunities he showed he is capable of scoring runs. Well done Hugo.

President’s Cup – Under 12 Alfred James Cup

2015/16 Alfred James Cup Grand Finalists and Runners-up

The 2015/16 Manly Warringah U12 Presidents Cup side absolutely deserved the right to defend their champions title from the previous year and were worthy winners of the runners up trophy to a red hot North Shore side.

The two undefeated teams played an epic final at Gore Hill which could have been swung Manly's way by an extra 15-odd runs with the bat. As they had all season the lads gave everything and represented the Association superbly and with great sportsmanship. Seeing the two teams out on the oval playing French cricket together 10-mins after the game was wonderful to watch and a great reminder of the beauty of sport.

Despite all the plaudits these lads certainly added to the collective grey hair count of their dedicated supporters. Some teams go AWOL when faced by pressure; this team Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report seemed to desire dire and unwinnable situations and thrived on fighting their way back from the brink. No better example was after winning the toss in Round 6 v Sutherland and being 9 for 33 in the 13th over only to win the match in the final over of the day defending a total of 90.

The team’s stats are very telling and clearly show our strengths and where improvement is necessary. Our bowling was consistently effective and our ability to restrict scoring rates enhanced by at times outstanding fielding. Unfortunately our batting was below expectation and requires attention. Despite really noticeable development in certain aspects like placing singles our lads need more patience, learn to build an innings and bat in partnership. However none of this feedback should take away from a superb season.

Captain Luke Harvey led with great heart and skill. His performance was central to the team’s success. He always put the team first and was celebrated for a superb captain’s knock in the final. Luke deserves recognition for every aspect of his play this season. The way in which he represented Manly Warringah is to be commended.

Hayden Calvert was strong support for Luke as Vice Captain. His love for cricket is clearly evident and as keeper he played a major role in setting high standards. His technical strength batting will underpin his success as his confidence and strength grows.

Time at the crease for Curtis Kinstler-Smith will come with attention to playing the ball straight however it was his bowling that was the find of the season. His ability to bowl full and at the stumps with a hint of outswing proved difficult to get away. This coupled with his competitive spirit made him a handful for every batsman and a great team man.

Ethan Langridge deserves recognition for an outstanding season. A Rep debutant, he showed himself as a skilful practitioner in every facet. There was hardly a passage of play he didn't influence and he helped get the team over the line on more than one occasion. Congrats Ethan.

Another debutant was Jack Colbran. He applied himself well and contributed significantly with both bat and ball on many occasions and greater consistency at this level will see him thrive. His pace around the field and strong arm were important cogs in our fielding success.

Jackson Griffiths is on the verge of unlocking his full potential. He was our strongest batsman but fell short of cracking a maiden Rep 50 twice which was a shame. His ability to bat time, confidence in his preferred shots and patience to wait for the right ball was seen every innings and set a good example to others. His challenge now is to Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report make the most of every opportunity to bat.

What a season for Jimmy Downs. His bowling hit full flight with concentrated effort on technique and a strong follow through. As a left-hander, as he grows and builds strength his ability to swing the ball and his accuracy will make him very difficult to face. Jimmy's batting confidence grew during the season and he played a number of excellent partnership innings.

Josh Pritchard took up leg spin bowling at the start of season and his performances were outstanding. Leg spin is such a difficult art and Josh is well placed to do well. More practice and concentration on the next ball rather than what has just passed will be important for his development. His match winning performance with bat and ball in Round 1 at Raby was instrumental in setting the platform for the season.

Our own ‘Jonty’ was Kuan Brown. His ability in the field is unmatched and we relied on his superb ground fielding and throwing throughout the season. He didn’t have the batting season he would have hoped for, however a player’s overall contribution to the team is what counts and across his bowling, fielding and as a team member he was a fine contributor.

Nathan Colyer deserves a heap of praise. He is a wonderful team player and understood the team relied on his batting and fielding in order to give others more bowling opportunities. He took this with great maturity and he showed throughout the season his great potential. When he cracks his first Rep 50 it will be an innings to watch. His timing, placement and shot selection stood him as one of leading batters in the Presidents Cup comp.

Raja Ganeshraj took to a leadership role in the team this season. His off spin bowling continues to improve - he has real talent, and he can now also celebrate his determined batting. Playing straight and being prepared to wear down the new ball was an important role for our top order and he did it with class.

Another of our multi-sport dynamos with talent to burn was Tyko Williamson. As with many others in the team, improved consistency with both bat and ball will stand him Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report apart from the rest. His finest moment of the season came when we needed it most - steering the team out of the deepest hole with a superb partnership with Sam to set a defendable target in round 6. What an innings!!

Sam Debien is the super sub. He made an immediate impact from the bench following an injury to Captain Harvey prior to the final round. What a legend - he turned up, he played, he helped win the match and rightly secured a place in the final team. Congrats Sam - you have proven that many who don’t make the final squad have the skill and talent to compete at this level and your enthusiasm to be involved rubbed off on everyone else. A sincere thank you and a hearty congrats.

Thanks to Assistant Coach Vamsy Doddala, scorers Coral Colyer and Ganesh, reporter Jacqui Harvey and Michael Cranney our valued Umpire. Massive acknowledgement and thanks to Jeff Downs (Manager) and Clint Colyer (Assistant Manager) - the two who kept us on time and inline all season - their energy and commitment not just on match days but behind the scenes made everything run smoothly.

Finally on behalf of everyone associated with the team we send a huge thanks to Ross Denny for all of his support and encouragement and acknowledge the Association for the opportunities for the kids made available in representing Manly Warringah.

2015/16 DCA W.S. Gee Shield Champions 2016 Ballina Under 13 Carnival Semi Finalists Winners - The MIKE PAWLEY DCA Representative Award for the most outstanding DCA Representative Team of the season

The Under 13 WS Gee Shield MWJCA side became the first Manly Side to bring home the Under 13 DCA competition. Comprehensively beating Sutherland in the final, 4 wickets down with 20 overs to spare.

Full credit must go to all the boys and what they achieved, it can never be taken away from them. Every player contributed at some point throughout the season and this is what set the team apart from our competitors. Although we had some standout individual performances, the camaraderie and one in all in mateship which the boys possess provided the platform to their successes.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Sam Greenland (captain): Led from the front with both bat and ball. Great cricket brain and it showed in pressure situations how a leader can dictate the terms of the game. Great year mate as a genuine all rounder, on and off the field. A massive score is just around the corner.

Sam Barnett: Tough gig opening the batting, despite forming a solid opening partnership. We never lost two wickets cheaply at the top of the innings, which really set the platform for the middle order. Stick to what works for you mate and keep enjoying it. Fantastic in the field, genuine opening batsmen, if only your jokes were as good as your Bieber flick.

Oscar Lucius: Tough to open the batting and keep mate. Great year, only guy to score a 100, which is a massive effort at your age. Your glove work is second to none buddy and your work ethic is the only thing that betters your talent. Keep enjoying it and keep working hard. Pillar of strength on and off the field.

Tom Phelps: What a year mate. You will look back on this season with fond memories of when you realised your potential. To win the Player of the DCA competition is an unbelievable effort, only bettered by how much you deserved it. Your knock of 80 not out in the final, proved your leadership qualities and ability to understand and take ownership of situations. Huge help to Sammy too.

Kale Gabila: Although you probably didn't score as many runs as you would have hoped, there is far more to cricket than runs and wickets. You brought a vibe and presence of belief to the team. You always put others first and enjoyed others success. That success is just around the corner for you. Unbelievable in the field and really set the platform to us being the best fielding team.

Ollie Melville: Played half the season with injury, but proved that you don't have to bowl quick to take wickets in the final. The skills you possess proved worthy, in one of the better spells of bowling I saw all year. True competitor and another one who enjoys his teammate’s success. Keep working hard at your batting, your time to score runs will come.

Matt Priest: Coming up from the IDCA and playing a different role in the side is always hard. I feel your batting improved, although the opportunities to score did not prevail. Great team player and will do anything you ask of him, fantastic to coach and fit in to the team like a glove. Despite your probably harsh personal assessment of this season, you were a great addition to the side mate. Work hard and the opportunities to provide greater contributions are just around the corner.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Nick Taylor: Unsung hero. Did everything well and although didn't get the wickets in the column, provided the pressure to ensure we take the wickets at the other end. Best economy rate in the competition by the length of the straight, by just knowing your role and having the ability to execute it. Unbelievable year mate, continue to know your role and don't get bored of what works. Amazing ability, along with Kale to set the tone in the field as well.

Sam Jones: I don't think you realise the talent you have mate. When you do realise it and understand your role, you can be one hell of a cricketer. You have to take accountability for that and that will only come from hard work. The talent is there, be ruthless, stick your chest out and get in the battle - that is when you are at your best, when you take it to the opposition. Do it with conviction but also have some street smarts. Your fielding and strength in the outfield is the best I've seen from a junior cricketer.

Josh Seward: Great year buddy, quiet achiever. Coming from another district is hard, but as like a few of the others, you fit in like a glove. Hard hitting batsmen and had a great year opening the bowling. Easy to coach and always a keen ear to the happenings around the group. Stick around at Manly buddy, you had a great year.

Noah Moss: Huge year opening the bowling, in a completely new role (doesn't open the bowling in club cricket). Body language is key for you mate, stick your chest out and never show the batsmen or the other team your frustration. Awesome outswing bowler, with a very good thinking brain to go with it. Stick to what works mate.

Luke Morley: The other half of the spin twins. Leading wicket taker in the competition and another awesome year, which is so well deserved. Continue to be hit to take wickets mate, after all you are a spinner and batsmen enjoy taking on spinners. Never be scared to throw it higher to encourage a batsmen to make a mistake. Back yourself and your ability buddy. Awesome year and was great to see your smile when you got the award at the SCG.

To all the parents, a wonderful achievement and you should be very proud of all the boys. You should also be commended on the work and efforts you put in behind the scenes to ensure success on it. From mowing the grass, to teas, to having the esky filled, to scoring or even Sue-Ellens art classes, it all went a long way to ensuring Manly's success.

To Gabi and Richard, your work is tireless and often goes unnoticed. The team could not achieve what we did without your organisation and presence around the group. I can't thank you enough for the effort you put in.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

To the guys who helped at training, Phelpsy, Tails and Smells, it was great to see your efforts rewarded through the boy’s success. They all look up to you and I have no doubt are very appreciative. They could not achieve what they did this year without your efforts.

To my other assistants, Henry and Gus, or should I say my fellow walkers and score checkers. You were a great help to settle my nerves, without even knowing it. I look forward to watching on with interest your future Manly careers.

To the boys, what an achievement, what fun we had but we also put in the hard work. Don't underestimate that, from the extra fielding sessions to changing the ground to practice scoring singles, they were all a little piece in the puzzle and dictated our successes. Your greatest asset is that you all stick together in a fight and rally behind each other, you can't teach that. Teams either have it or they don't and you have it in truckloads, own it!!

Lastly, I put a challenge to you all, to become the first MWJCA team to win more than two premierships.

YEAH THE BOYSS!!!!

President’s Cup – Under 13

Three new players (Dylan, James and Thomas) joined the squad for this season’s campaign. Once again the competition had a big gap in standard between the top few clubs and the bottom sides. We improved to finish third in the competition however we were still a little short of being competitive against the top two teams. Our team was not dominated by the efforts of one or two players but rather the efforts of all players. This season the spin trio of Lachie, Noah and Thomas developed to be a key part of our very competitive bowling attack. Wicketkeeper Dom Murphy worked very well with our spinners. Joe O’Brien continued to be an astute captain and making valuable contributions with the bat and in the field.

Match Summaries Round 1 - NWS Hurricanes 11-67 (L Trewartha 3-14, N Kasmar 3-4) defeated by Manly 3-71 (L Richardson 21*) at Collaroy Plateau Park NWS won the toss and batted on a slow plateau park. The Manly pace quartet of Dunn, Dunnachie, Ryan and Thomas built early pressure and then the spin duo of Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Trewartha and Kasmar destroyed the NWS innings. This was a pattern to be repeated throughout the season. Lachlan Trewartha and Noah Kasmar with the support of Thomas Arrand proved match winners on several occasions. Luke Richardson was the key in our successful run chase.

Round 2 - Penrith 9-114 (L Trewartha 6-12) defeated by Manly 6-116 (D Bradstreet 24, T Arrand 23*) at Jamieson Park. Penrith won the toss and batted on a hot day at Penrith. Tight bowling from the medium pacers set the game up for an impressive display of off spin bowling from Lachlan Trewartha. He mesmerized the Penrith batters with flight and spin. Henry Thomas chimed in with two wickets in the last over. A solid start from Joe O’Brien and Dylan Bradstreet put us in a good position. Thomas Arrand played an attacking innings to see us to the victory.

Round 3 - Manly 9-104 (L Richardson 32) defeated by North Shore 3-105 at Collaroy Plateau Park Manly won the toss and batted. Despite good contributions from Joe and Luke and batting out the 50 overs we fell short of a competitive total. Once again our bowling was tight but our score was not enough against a good batting team.

Round 4 - Manly 11-78 (J Brock 21) defeated by Hornsby 3-80 at Kuringai Oval This was a disappointing performance against last season’s premiers. We won the toss and batted first on a moist ground. James Brock played an attacking innings to set us up for a competitive batting effort. However, we never recovered from a catastrophic over where three wickets fell. Our score was not enough against a good batting team.

Round 5 - Newcastle 11-54 (36 overs) defeated by Manly 6/55 (36 overs) at Collaroy Plateau Park Luke Richardson 22 Noah Kasmar 6-16, Sam Dunn 3-5, Evan Dunnachie 1-10 Dom Murphy 3 catches, 2 stumpings

This was a good win after our difficulties at Hornsby. Newcastle won the toss and batted. Sam Dunn took early wickets and then Noah Kasmar ran through the Newcastle batting. Dom Murphy was excellent behind the stumps. We didn’t bat that well but Luke got us within range and a couple of lusty blows from Henry finished the game.

Round 6 - Manly 8-167 (50 overs) defeated Canterbury Wests 11/164 (49.4 overs) at Collaroy Plateau Park Joe O’Brien 54, Luke Richardson 30, James Brock 26 n.o. Xavier Ryan 4-19, Evan Dunnachie 4-28, Noah Kasmar 2-19 Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

This 3 v 4 clash was a very exciting game with both teams having a chance of winning in the last over. Joe O’Brien and Luke Richardson batted sensibly for a partnership of 109. Joe’s 54 was the best knock of the season. Intelligent batting from James Brock controlled the latter part of our innings. This batting performance was easily the best of the season. However CW had strong batting and their key batter played an impressive innings to give them a big chance of winning the game. Xavier Ryan and Evan Dunnachie bowled brilliantly over the death overs with full deliveries on the stumps taking the final six wickets. A towering outfield catch by Luke Richardson off the key CW batter was critical to our success.

This was a win to savour and hopefully a blueprint for future matches.

This was my last season with this group. My thanks to both the players and families for their support over the past three seasons.

DCA Harold Moore Shield – Under 14

2015/16 DCA Harold Moore Shield Finalists 2016 Graeme Malcolm Shield Undefeated Champions (Newcastle Country Carnival)

Season 2015/16 was a very enjoyable season for all involved with the Manly Under 14 DCA team.

In my first season as coach I was very impressed with how the boys pulled together as a team, supported each other both on and off the field and gave 100% at all times.

We introduced the concept of 3 team “principles’ this season. Its intent was to get the boys focused on what we as coaches felt would have the biggest impact on improving in their cricket. They were:

1. Team First 2. Play positive cricket without fear of failure 3. Have fun

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

I am pleased to say that the boys “lived” these principles at all times, and their feedback was that this “direction” really helped them throughout games and at training. I was very proud of how they committed to this approach throughout the year and believe it sets them up well for the future.

The boys did very well to top their pool in the DCA competition and qualify for the finals with a home final. This was a great result after they narrowly lost the opening round game against St. George, demonstrating their “never give up attitude”. In such a short competition of 5 games it would have been easy for them to think that their season was over before it had really begun, especially after the wash out against Newcastle in Round 3 when we were well on top of the game. Dominant wins in games against North Shore, Fairfield and Blacktown had us confident going into the quarter final against South Eastern.

Unfortunately we were narrowly beaten by a very strong South Eastern team on the day, who thoroughly deserved their win. We were into trouble early at 4-20, but the boys never gave up and kept fighting all day to get themselves back in the game. I was most proud of them for this, as well as how they accepted defeat and congratulated their opponents post match.

The Newcastle tournament was also a great success with the boys’ convincingly winning all games, including a great win against North Shore in the final to take some silverware from the season. More important than the result was the team spirit and fun that they had during this week both on and off the field – I am sure they will remember the experience forever.

Here’s a quick note on all players:

Ned Barnet Ned took over the captaincy and did a great job in that capacity throughout the season. He knows the game well, has the respect of the team and was a pleasure to work with (we may need to replace him at the toss though as he kept calling the wrong way!).

Ned has great loop with his off spinners and gives the ball “a rip” and spins it hard. He was rewarded with some good figures throughout the DCA tournament with the highlights being 10 overs, 2-13 against North Shore and 6 overs, 3-6 against Fairfield.

Ned also has significant batting talent and performed capably as our “floater” in the order – he often went in when we were in trouble and most times turned the ship around for the team.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Ned is one of the best fielders I have seen for his age and took some great catches throughout the year. Well done on a great season Ned.

Aidan Bennett Aidan started the season wonderfully with a fantastic spell of quick bowling in the trial game against North Shore – he really had all the batsmen “jumping” and some didn’t seem too keen to proceed to the wicket. Unfortunately injuries got in the way of his season and he missed a couple of DCA games as a result. The games he played he showed his undoubted class with the highlight being his 3-25 off 10 overs against St. George.

Aidan also possesses plenty of ability with the bat and hits the ball very hard for his age. He batted extremely sensibly in the QF clash with 37 no to get us back in the game. Aidan is also a great athlete and fantastic fielder. Here’s hoping an injury free season next year affords him the opportunity to show his talents in full.

Jarod Colyer Jarod was the leading run scorer in the team this year. A focus on a more relaxed approach and hitting the loose ball when it is there paid handsome dividends. Jarod looks fantastic when he lets his natural talents take over and plays positively. His 63 against Newcastle and 48 against Fairfield were great innings to watch.

Jarod has worked hard on his fielding and this improved a lot from previous seasons – a reward for effort for sure.

I look forward to seeing Jarod’s progress in the next few years – he has the potential to be a very good player for Manly for many years to come.

Bailey Kenzie At times Bailey was almost impossible to score off. His accurate left arm spinners was just what we needed in certain games – figures of 5 overs 0-1, 10 overs 1-6 and 5 overs 1-7 in games clearly demonstrates his value in this regard.

Bailey’s batting had limited opportunities in the season, but he did very well in Newcastle when given opportunities that didn’t arise in the DCA. His 40 in the final was a super innings that set that game up perfectly.

I know Bailey is working hard on his fielding and I am sure this will pay off with improvement next season.

I love Bailey’s enthusiasm for the game – never lose that Bailey!

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Joel McGregor Joel’s season was nowhere near as successful as his previous DCA season’s, but he still contributed significantly to the team. On occasions he did a good job seeing off the new ball and therefore assisting our middle order, but the big score eluded him throughout the DCA season. Improved performances in the Newcastle carnival reminded all of his ability.

Joel’s fielding is crucial to the team and his support of Ned as vice-captain was invaluable. Joel often underestimates his bowling, but he can be very useful as a change bowler, as his 2-7 off 5 overs against Fairfield demonstrated.

Brynn Mendel Brynn’s first season in DCA was a great success. His keeping often went unnoticed, which is a sign of a good gloveman. His work up to the stumps improved dramatically throughout the year, which was crucial given the nature of our attack. His diving catch off a Bennett thunderbolt in the Newcastle Carnival final was a season highlight.

Brynn’s 28 no off 25 balls against Newcastle was a snapshot into his batting ability. He plays straight and hits the ball better than most boys this age. He batted beautifully in multiple games in Newcastle, including a fantastic 50 no in the final. His batting has the potential to transform our middle order next season.

Brynn is a level headed young man with a great work ethic and willingness to learn. I look forward to seeing his progress next year.

Lachlan Molyneux In many respects Lachie is the “heart” of the team. His teammates love his endless enthusiasm for the game and his competitive nature. The way he “led” the team in the field with his enthusiasm was a lesson for all other players.

Lachie’s figures this year did not reflect his influence. He often bowled tightly with wickets coming at the other end. His 5 over spell for 2-3 against Fairfield gave him some reward for his hard work.

Like other players in the team, Lachie “suffered” from being part of a talented batting order and would clearly bat higher in most other teams. He needs to ensure he continues to focus on his batting as I believe he has the ability to become a true all- rounder at this level.

Jake Osborne A welcome recall to DCA for Jake for this season. I loved how he dealt with getting dropped last season – didn’t complain and simply got on with the job of scoring runs – and did he score some runs last season! An example to all the boys on how to deal Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report with the inevitable disappointment that occurs for cricketers at some stage of their career.

Jake batted very well in the crucial number 3 role. His 47 against St.George and 44 against Blacktown were both class innings that were halted by run outs. A real shame as I thought he was just about to start dominating the bowling in both innings. A massive score is surely in the offering next season for this very talented player.

Jake is a humble young man who always puts the team first – a real pleasure to have in the side.

Hilton Ovenden Hilton showed glimpses of his great potential this year. His calm and polished 38 in the QF in partnership with Aidan was a great innings that gave us a chance in the game, as was his punishing 32* against Blacktown to close out the innings.

His 50 retired against Parramatta in Newcastle was one of the best innings I have ever seen for a boy this age – his ability to play off both the front and back foot in this innings was great and the bowlers didn’t know where to bowl with him.

Hilton will continue to work on his fielding, and with focus on this aspect of his game will become an even more valuable member of the side. Well done this season Hilton.

Josh Park Some may have thought Josh’ selection in DCA was somewhat of a surprise at the start of the season, but by the end of it nobody was questioning the decision! The selectors saw the real potential in a tall left armer who can swing the ball and he did a great job in his first DCA season. At times his in-swinging yorkers were impossible to get away for the opposition, especially at the “death” of the innings.

Josh also played a couple of “cameos’ with the bat at the end of the innings, and demonstrates a fantastic ability to hit the ball long and hard.

A focus on his fielding will assist Josh become an even more valuable member the team next season. Well done on a great season Josh.

Ben Watts Ben is a quality left arm spinner who simply never seems to bowl a bad ball. At times he was unplayable, especially his amazing spell of 4-9 off 9 overs to get us home against Blacktown. Ben thoroughly deserved his selection in in Manly’s Green Shield team this year, a fantastic achievement for someone so young.

Ben had limited opportunities with the bat, but we all know he has ability in this area and I hope we can get him more opportunities to show this next season. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Ben is a leader amongst this team, the other boys look up to him, and once he realises that he is in a position to influence others in a positive way even more than he currently does he will assist the team even more. A fantastic young man, who was a pleasure to be involved with this season.

Bill Williams When Bill bowls well he is almost impossible to get away. His 1-12 off 5 overs against St. George when they needed to score quickly to win was a perfect example. Bill didn’t get the runs that his talent shows in DCA, but he came good with a couple of damaging innings in the Newcastle carnival.

Bill’s fielding is always first class and he took a number of great catches this season. A great team man, Bill is fantastic to have around the team – well done Bill!

The U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield Undefeated Champions (Newcastle Country Carnival)

Thank you to Lucas Heffernan, Kai Davies and Jack Hobson who played DCA games this year due to injuries – they clearly showed they were up to his standard and I hope they enjoyed the experience. Lucas and Jack also came to Newcastle, as did Luka Vajdic and Finn Nixon- Tomko – thanks guys and great to have you as part of the team.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

A special thanks to my assistant coaches Jon Watts and Clint Colyer. I couldn’t have asked for a better coaching team and the boys really respected their opinions throughout the year and learnt a lot from them both.

To the “glue” of the team – manager Judy Kenzie, a huge thank you. Her work was tireless and enabled the coaches to focus on the boys and the cricket – much appreciated Judy.

Thank you to all the parents – I can’t think of one parent who didn’t contribute to the team in some capacity and the support the boys had throughout the season was first class.

Thank you as well to Roy Vumbaca for his support and guidance, especially early in my first season as DCA coach, and to David Gainsford for taking an active interest in our team and attending training a couple of times.

Finally, a couple of congratulations to finish with:  To the U15 Presidents team on yet another premiership win – another outstanding result, well done to coach Steve Hobson and team!  To Jake, Jarod, Ben and Ned for their selection in the NSW State Challenge teams in Dubbo – well deserved recognition.

President’s Cup – Under 14 Anthony Neale Cup

2015/16 Anthony Neale Cup Undefeated Champions 2016 Tamworth Under 14 Carnival Champions Winners - The ERROL CRANNEY Presidents Cup Award for the most outstanding Presidents Cup Representative Team of the season

Congratulations to the magnificent Manly U14 Presidents Cup team, delivering an unforgettable season remaining undefeated to win the competition (3 years running). It was immensely satisfying to watch the boys develop over the season, improving game after game, saving their most dominant display for the grand final against Central Coast.

Whilst there were many outstanding individual performances along the way, the team defined itself with fielding displays that were nothing short of first class, often attracting many comments of praise from opposing coaches, players and umpires.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Our decision to play in the Tamworth Country Carnival in January 2016 was a great one. The opportunity to play on turf pitches was of course the major draw card, and brought the mandatory spend for parents on new sets of spikes for all the boys. Whilst we were there to have fun above all else, the team continued to display the incredible brand of cricket they had played throughout the regular President’s season. They certainly saved the best game for last comprehensively beating the Lismore DCA team in the grand final with one of the most incredible bowling and fielding displays ever seen in the local area. A hat-trick from Liam Dinan captured by the local TV camera crews caused quite a stir with the local press coverage of the “Manly Presidents” reaching fever pitch in newspapers and TV. Congratulations to the Tamworth Cricket Committee for organising such a professionally run and most enjoyable tournament.

Congratulations to our opening batsman Jack Melchiore, who is the recipient of the player of the season award. Jack scored 173 runs at an average of 43.25, taking some awesome catches in slips along the way that would make any classic catch reel. Well done to our captain (Finn Nixon-Tomko) and vice-captain (Lucas Heffernan) who lead the side with distinction.

It’s difficult to capture the great moments over the season for each boy in just a few words, but in summary:

Kai Davies Kai had an outstanding season for Presidents this year. When he wasn’t taking wickets or making runs he was having an impact on the game with his safe hands at gully. Blessed with a great eye Kai has worked hard on his batting technique to become a player that can be thrown in at any stage of the innings with great affect. Congratulations Kai on a great all round performance

Mark Dignam Our version of “Freddy Flintoff”, Mark has all the attributes to be a fine all rounder. A strong hitter of the ball and an aggressive medium pacer, Mark has the ability to be a real impact player. Solid performances during the season saw Mark promoted to the opening batters position during the final, where he dominated the bowling and presented us with a great first up advantage. Well-done Mark! Get that back right over the winter and you will be a world-beater next season.

Liam Dinan Consistent high-level performances with the new ball show the full potential of this young man. Liam tormented opposition batsmen with his cunning swing and excellent control. I don’t think there was a game we can remember where Liam did not get us away to a good start making in-roads into the opposition batting line up. A steady Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report player with the bat and an excellent outfielder make Liam a player to watch in the future. Continue working on your all round game Liam and a top order batting spot awaits you. Superb effort.

Lucas Heffernan Lucas was an outstanding leader and foil as vice captain of our side this year. An inspirational fielder who can turn a game with a great catch or a smart run out, Lucas set the tone for others to follow in every game. Able to bat anywhere in the order, Lucas became the team finisher and imposed himself on the opposition with positive stroke play and excellent running between wickets. Lucas, inspirational players always make the difference; keep up the hard work, well done.

Jack Hobson Hurricane Hobson proved to be the ideal new ball bowler during the season. Jack bowled with a rhythm and control rarely seen at this level. Blessed with solid pace and a good outswinger combined with just the right level of aggression, Jack had many a top order player hopping around the crease during the season. Never one to shy away from the contest Jack has the courage and commitment to be a special player in the future. Jack, patience is the key to all success, work hard and when you think you have it all, work some more. Great contribution.

Oliver Little With both bat and ball Oliver showed much promise during the season. Never one to let the game drift, Oliver demonstrated great intent to impose himself on the contest whenever he had bat or ball in hand. An excellent fielder with great athleticism able to do the miraculous, Oliver was never out of the game. Keep up the good work Oli, and thanks for a great contribution.

Callum McKay Callum started the season behind the eight ball with a broken ankle, which surprisingly didn’t slow him up one bit. Even with a cast and a boot on, Callum turned up to every training session and showed the passion that makes him a great team player. Blessed with a fantastic outswinger and great hands, Callum had a major impact as a change bowler for us this year. No doubt he will be better-placed next season to continue his development without injury. Callum you were absolutely inspiring to the team with your commitment, keep focused on your goals, next year is your year.

Jack Melchiore The best opening bat in the competition went from strength to strength as the season went on. Always in control, brave and focused, Jack really set our bating up this year. Mr Reliable in a crisis always looking to play his part for the team and never worried about his individual score, Jack showed maturity beyond his years. Add to that some of the safest hands in the business and with the ability to take a catch in the outfield few could expect to even get to, Jack had a great season. Well done young man, continue on the path and we will be paying to watch you play at some stage.

Finn Nixon-Tomko Our gun number three had a very consistent year with the bat. Finn led the side admirably and marshalled his troops with great aplomb. Always playing with a positive attitude Finn demonstrated all the attributes of a well-rounded top order player. Able to increase the tempo when required, as well as defend where necessary. Finn has a great insight for the game and adapted well to anything that was thrown at him. A fine season Finn, full of much authority, one you can be justly proud of. See you up a level next year.

Will Rogers Like Callum, Will had his fair share of injuries during the season. Blessed with good pace and an athletic approach when on song, Will was a force to be reckoned with. Able to dominate batting orders on his day, Will shows great promise for the future. Limited opportunities because of injury during the year meant we didn’t see Will in top gear for a large part of the season. Will, here’s hoping a little rest and a winter program brings you back to us ready for a great year.

Luka Vajdic One of the spin twins Luka bowled with great control and flight during the season. Able to turn the ball more than your average finger spinner, Luka surprised quite a few top order batsmen with his skill and craft. Luka was someone we always turned to when we wanted to stop the run flow or break a partnership. Always with a smile on his face and ready for a challenge Luka improved steadily during the season to be one of the competitions best spinners. Luka, hard work and practice will always pay off, we expect your batting to improve and your bowling to go up another level next year.

Benji Wilson Benji was the young all rounder of the side, starved for opportunity on a lot of occasions. Benji always remained positive, keen to learn and ready for the challenge. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

And what a rocket arm! We expect Benji will be a dominant force for us in years to come with both bat and ball. Benji, well done for staying the course, a bit of additional strength and size will make all the difference to you next year. Stay focused.

Whist we were a great team on the field over the season, we were even better off the field thanks to our wonderful supporters and parents involved in supporting our boys through every game. Game day lunches from the Manly Master Chefs (lead by “Sir Elton" McKay) were the envy of the competition.

And finally a big thank you to our Manager Steve “Dobbie” Rogers, for coordinating events through the season and to his apprentice “King Louie” Dinan, who made sure the Country Carnival in Tamworth was a success for all.

Thanks to all for making such a great season a truly special one for the boys.

DCA E.G. Weblin Shield – Under 15

2015/16 DCA E.G. Weblin Shield Semi Finalists

A disappointing 2014/15 DCA season was left far behind as the boys entered the U15 DCA Weblin Shield season with much anticipation. For many of the boys it was to be their first real season on turf and this was met with much excitement. By the time the season started, there were 7 new faces in the team from the previous season. Nothing that a good old fashioned, pre season bonding trip down the South Coast couldn’t fix though and the team spirit was one of the main reasons we were able to go as far as the semis. This was the furthest that this team had ever got to in reps and was just reward for all the effort that the boys put in before and during the season.

We started off in the trials with a bit of a touch up from neighbours, North Shore but started to find our feet with two wins from the next two trials. We carried this momentum into the first game with a comfortable win over Newcastle, then North Shore (2), before a hiccup in losing to lowly Blacktown. We righted the ship with a tense win over last season’s premiers St George before finishing off the rounds with a solid win over Camden.

The quarter final saw a rematch against Newcastle and despite some tense moments, the Manly boys won through to a home semi vs. Parramatta. Unfortunately the boys didn’t really fire a shot in that game and were beaten convincingly by the team that would go on to win the comp.

The Team: Byron Bates - Once again Baz took on the role of keeper/opening bat. Looked threatening on occasions, with a few decent starts and top score of 47 against Camden.

Will Greenland (vice captain) - Elevated back to the top of the order and like Baz, got several good starts without capitalizing on them. Played a pivotal role in the quarter final win over Newcastle with a rock solid dig of 34. Teamed up well with Ollie to steer the team around the park.

Ollie Davies (captain) - Had a stellar season with the bat, with the highlight being a punishing 173 n.o. against St George. Took a few wickets with his leggie/off spin combination and with Will, did a good job of captaining the team. Was duly rewarded by being named DCA Batsman of the Year and DCA Player of the Year.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Kyle Martin - Got off to a good start with a solid 30 n.o. in the first game but didn’t quite go on with it as hoped. Did a good job when put in as keeper to take the load off Baz and as always, was an absolute demon in the field.

Harry Kantor-Smith - Back in the DCA after 2 seasons in Preso’s, Harry played an all- rounder’s role, batting in the middle order and either opening the bowling or first change. Surprised many a batsman with his pace, with a great effort in the quarters against Newcastle with 1-18 off 8 overs.

Luca Franks - Didn’t quite get the runs that were hoped for this season but certainly made up for it with his bowling and was our leading wicket taker with 10 wickets. Like Harry, often opened the bowling or was first change. Had some great moments in the field with a classic 1st slip catch and a direct hit run out, whilst on his knees, both against Camden.

Jake De Angelis - Brought into the DCA with the tag “X Factor” and certainly showed glimpses of living up to that tag with an exciting 30 n.o. in game 2 against North Shore. His fielding was outstanding and was very handy with his off spin, highlighted by a game turning effort of 4-28 from 10 overs in game 1 vs. Newcastle.

Tom Ivers - Called up from Presidents Cup to the DCA side for the first game, Tom didn’t let anyone down in his first season of DCA cricket. Tom featured in a great partnership of 77 against St George and bowled many good spells with a highlight of 2- 16 from 10 in the quarters against Newcastle.

Jordy Brewster - Has a massive amount of potential, with both bat and ball with several good opening spells with the ball. But the highlight of the season had to be his 37 n.o., batting at 9, in the semi against Parra. It was an innings of great maturity and with Jacko, put on 42 for the last wicket.

Jackson Rath - Didn’t get a lot of opportunity with the bat but certainly applied the pressure when called upon by his skipper to bowl. Was always economical, exampled by 2-22 off 9 overs against Camden. Always had the best jokes at training, even if some of them aren’t fit for print!

Mason Rutzou - Like Jacko, Mason didn’t get much of a go with the bat but always put in 100% when asked to bowl or when in the field. Held his nerve in the critical game against St. George when bowling the 2nd last over. His first ball went for 6 but then bowled 2 dots, 2 singles and then took a wicket to steal the momentum back for Manly.

Pat Mace - Another late call up to DCA, this was Pat’s debut season in reps and Pat got better with every game he played. His bowling improved with every ball he bowled Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report and he was close to the pick of the bowlers in the semi final against Parra, unlucky not to take a wicket with the great figures of 0-9 from 7 overs.

The fact we made the semis may have surprised many people, but we knew we had the makings of a good team from the moment we hopped on the bus on our trip down to the South Coast. Our coaching staff actually felt we had under achieved, rather than over. A spot in the grand final was so close, yet so far away! Our coaching style has always been about trying to get the best out of the boys whilst trying to make sure they enjoy the game as much as possible. Winning, whilst not everything, certainly makes for a more enjoyable, rewarding season and the boys had their fair share of success.

There are many factors that are involved in any team’s success, and our thanks start with Richard Fry, our specialist coach who gave up countless hours of his time to help rev up the boys. Our wonderful manager, Alecia De Angelis, who made the road so easy for us with her organisational skills. Jeanette Rath, who organised the food and seemed to have an endless supply of watermelon! To all the parents who contributed with putting up nets, tents, scoring and once again supplying the hordes with mountains of beautiful food. Manly Cricket, in general, has a great reputation of putting on great spreads. Our team is no exception!

Hopefully the upcoming last season of reps for the boys will be just as much fun and just as rewarding as this one. The bus trip on the next bonding trip will be the indicator!!

President’s Cup – Under 15

The representative season of 2015-16 was an enjoyable, successful and developmental experience for the Under 15 President’s Cup team. The team was initially unsettled by the loss of a couple of players due to injuries before the season got under way, however the players quite quickly bonded into an effective, close knit team that worked hard on developing their cricket skills and knowledge about how approach challenging situations in cricket matches. Throughout the Rep season the U15 Presidents Cup players were keen to learn, and thoughtful about how to approach their training and cricket.

We commenced the season with two practice matches that we lost but from which we gained significant confidence. Tenzin Tenkyong batted extremely well in the first practice match as did Nathan Hogg. Oscar Greenwood and Sean Nimmo batted very well in the second practice as did Wil Dawes. And our bowling was accurate in both matches without much luck.

Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

The first match of the season saw us pitted against probably the best side in the President’s Cup competition – the Hurricanes Maroon. We batted well, with a quick start from Sean Nimmo, and then some solid batting from Wil Dawes and Henry Wilkinson Gill, followed by some excellent aggressive batsmanship by Duncan Hatfield and Max Stewart at the end. We probably did not have quite enough runs, but we bowled accurately early, and in the middle of the innings a terrific spell of medium pace bowling by Angus O’Donnell, and spin bowling by Tom Fountain well backed up by Henry Wilkinson-Gill, saw us back in the match. Fine wicket keeping by Oscar Greenwood in the second half of the innings helped our cause. In the final overs, however, the opposition outplayed us with some good aggressive hitting and got over the line.

The second match saw us hit our straps. Against Canterbury Wests, a sensational innings by our Captain, Oscar Greenwood who scored a century (the only century by one of our players for the Representative season), well supported by a terrific innings by Nimmo, with good support later on from Liam House, and a number of our lower order players, secured us a match winning score. Our bowlers followed up by bowling accurately and taking wickets when it mattered. Max Stewart, Nathan Hogg, Duncan Hatfield, Angus O’Donnell and Tenzin Tenkyong bowled tightly and took wickets when it mattered, and the spinners Henry Wilkinson-Gill and Tom Fountain were again a good combination of accuracy and wicket taking. This win also demonstrated the character of the team. The boys played high quality cricket in the correct spirit of cricket in the face of attempted distractions by the opposition.

The third match was against another very good side, Penrith. We bowled excellently. Early on Duncan Hatfield, Nathan Hogg, Angus O’Donnell and Tenzin Tenkyong were accurate and unlucky not to get more wickets. Our spinners then did well. Henry Wilkinson-Gill bowled a terrific long spell giving away very few runs and being unlucky not to get more wickets. Tom Fountain bowled well. And the effort in the field was exemplary – high quality catching and application of pressure on the batsmen throughout with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. This included excellent wicket keeping by Jake Alexander. In the last 10 overs however, the opposition got away from us with some good batting to post a competitive score. We then struggled early with Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report the bat against very accurate bowling, but good batting by Liam House, and a return to form with the bat by Jake Alexander were instrumental in getting us back into the game. A final push with the bat by Jake Alexander who was outstanding under pressure, in combination with a late, fine innings by Nathan Hogg, got us up to a tie with the opposition in what was a very high quality cricket match.

The 4th match we played was against Newcastle, at a beautiful oval in Newcastle. We batted well early, with the Oscar Greenwood again playing beautifully, and fine performances by Liam House, Jake Alexander, and Duncan Hatfield, well supported by Tenzin Tenkyong and Angus O’Donnell, saw us post a solid total. We then bowled beautifully early on with Nathan Hogg, Duncan Hatfield, and Max Stewart bowling particularly well. This was followed by Tom Fountain bowling superb leg spin, some good spin bowling from Oscar Greenwood, and Angus O’Donnell and Michael Calley continuing to apply pressure with the ball. Michael Calley bowled especially well to wrap up the match. The catching in this match was at its best for the season, with 3 catches by Sean Nimmo, a ‘blinder’ by Max Stewart, and very high quality wicket keeping by Jake Alexander who again put in a strong performance behind the stumps. This was our best win of the season - terrific team performance.

The final match of the season was against Sutherland who we had lost to in our second practice match. We unfortunately were not able to get this game to flow our way. We batted solidly from the beginning but struggled to score runs quickly enough. Sean Nimmo was solid in taking the shine off the ball, Oscar Greenwood batted very well and top scored again, and Wil Dawes played well. Liam House played a good innings in the middle, and Duncan Hatfield struck the ball well at the end. Our total however was always going to be difficult to defend and despite some accurate bowling by Max Stewart, Nathan Hogg and Duncan Hatfield, with contributions from Angus O’Donnell, Tenzin Tenkyong, Michael Calley and spinners Tom Fountain (despite his back injury) and Wil Dawes, we just could not quite wrestle the authority from Sutherland and they ended up winning reasonably comfortably.

Overall, the season saw all players become better thinkers about cricket, and improve their skills in a range of match situations. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Oscar Greenwood’s captaincy was very good, and developed through the season. His batting was excellent finishing with an average of 51 opening the batting. Also he bowled surprisingly good leg spin, and his wicket keeping was very solid. He was, in the final analysis, the batsman and player of our season. Nathan Hogg bowled accurately and was unlucky with the ball early in the season but as his luck turned and he took vital early wickets for us. He also batted well when called upon under pressure often, and provided good support to Oscar in terms of leadership. Duncan Hatfield showed himself to be a tenacious and skilled bowler who was able to maintain his accuracy throughout innings’. He also showed himself to be a talented aggressive batsman who played some very important innings for the team. He was a great contributor to the side. Jake Alexander stood up when he was needed in the middle of the season after having an early run of bad luck with the bat. He showed himself to be a talented aggressive batsman, and an improved wicket keeper. Liam House unfortunately was impeded by a shoulder injury so could not bowl for us, but his batting in the middle order and his efforts in the field lifted the team throughout the season. Wil Dawes was strong influence in the field, bowled well when called upon, and while he was a bit down on luck with some of his innings, as can happen in cricket, when luck did not go against him he showed what a good player he can be. He also took some excellent catches. Tenzin Tenkyong was a valuable contributor with bat, ball and in the field. He is a talented cricketer, bowls with surprising pace, hits the ball cleanly with the bat and is an excellent fieldsman. Tom Fountain showed what a talented leg spin bowler he is during the representative season. He took important wickets, and always worried the batsmen. His contribution in the field improved across the season also. Henry Wilkinson-Gill was a valuable middle order batsman and off spin bowler. His solid batting technique served him well. His off-spin bowling improved with more Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report overs and he showed great control and skill in his final match prior to needing to leave the team to go a school camp in the second half of the year. Sean Nimmo was a fine contributor to the team, his aggressive and skilful batting at the top of the order got us off to some great starts, and his efforts in the field improved throughout the season. Max Stewart was fine pace bowler throughout, taking a number of very important wickets, some brilliant catches and chiming in the bat when required. He is a talented cricketer. Angus O’Donnell was a great contributor when he joined the team. His bowling was accurate, with a knack of taking important wickets. He was a great contributor in the field and when called upon got some very useful runs for the team. Michael Calley was also a very valuable player for the team, bowling accurately, taking key wickets and curtailing the run rate. Overall, this group of players formed a successful team, and as individuals and team players they show great promise. As a group, the President’s Cup U 15 Team was wonderful to be associated with. The Assistant Coach David Nimmo is deserving of great praise for his contribution to the Team. He was a wonderful leader and supporter of the boys, and a great help and source of advice to me. The Manager, Ben Greenwood also deserves much praise for the time and energy he put in to organising the running of the Team. And to the parents of the players, I would like to express my gratitude. They were a lovely bunch of people, who were always willing to help out to ensure the season was enjoyable and ran smoothly.

DCA C.S. Watson Shield – Under 16

2015/16 DCA C.S. Watson Shield Semi Finalists

The pre-season preparation for the 2015 U/16 DCA season began very differently to what the team had encountered in previous years. The majority of the players had advanced to be recognised by the Manly Warringah Grade club and were being trained under the guidance of Shawn Bradstreet, Phil Marks and the other specialist grade coaches. Those players not at grade were training hard with Warringah Shires. This unique situation was an enormous compliment to the players for their achievements and development from 2014. It also gave them the opportunity to return to their DCA commitments and play to a standard reflecting the high level of training they had experienced.

Throughout the round games and quarter final match, the team performed to a very high standard and showed a great deal of class as they dominated matches. As in previous years, every player contributed significantly at various stages of the competition displaying the tremendous depth of talent in the squad. This team is blessed with so many players who are genuine all round cricketers and it was pleasing to see so many of them perform and contribute with both bat and ball when opportunities arose. This extends to Jack McKenna, Luke Trbojevic and Meet Patel from the President Cup team who filled in during the season and did not look out of place in DCA. It is a rewarding feeling as coaches to see the success of the team built on the positive input from every player, not just a select few individuals. It is therefore difficult to single out individual performances. Nonetheless, special mention and congratulations to Isaiah Vumbaca for deservedly being awarded as the Player of the Year.

Whilst the season ended one match earlier than intended, the loss to Camden in the Semi Final allowed the players to respond to one thing they had rarely experienced – a defeat. Although the loss was disappointing it was pleasing to see the players display respect and good sportsmanship in congratulating and acknowledging the opposition as deserved winners.

In the four year period from U/13 DCA to U/16 DCA this team has experienced some remarkable achievements. They won 27 of 29 DCA matches which included two premierships in U/14 and U/15, winners of the State Challenge in U/14, first placed team at the end of the regular season every year from U/13 to U/16, winner of the Country Carnival in U/14 and DCA runners up in U/13. In time we will look back fondly at these extraordinary accomplishments and appreciate how special this team’s success has been.

As coaches, the charter over the last four years has never been about victories or premierships, they have been a nice bonus. It has always been about two things – player development and player enjoyment. It has been wonderful to see the Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report development within the team as they have progressed from young boys with talent and potential into young men who are accomplished and skilful cricketers, successfully competing in adult cricket. To have Aiden Bariol and Jack Edwards selected in Australian and New South Wales teams; Isaiah Vumbaca and Nick Osborne in New South Wales teams; Jonah Anderson, Hayden Brown, Gabriel Harris, Ned Hole and Jacob O'Sullivan joining Aiden, Jack, Isaiah and Nick playing grade cricket for Manly Warringah as well as Matthew Brewster and Will Yeaman playing Warringah Shires cricket speaks volumes for the progress and advancements these boys have made in their cricket. The dedication, hard work and enthusiasm the players have displayed to their training and matches throughout the last four years confirms their level of enjoyment and commitment to the game they love. They live and breathe cricket and this is reflected in the standards they have set in training and games.

This squad has benefitted enormously from the pathways program and the opportunities it has provided. Thank you to the many people from Manly Warringah grade and Warringah Shires for your input in the development of these players. The support of David Gainsford and Greg Boyer has been invaluable, particularly in assisting player’s transition and adjustment to the demands of men’s cricket. The countless hours Bobby Rollins dedicated to the development of our batsmen has played a significant part in their development.

Thank you to the many people who again this year contributed to making our summer of cricket an enjoyable time. Manager Phill Edwards who had every organisational detail covered perfectly. Physiotherapist Steve Bariol has been a huge asset, physically preparing and rehabilitating these young growing bodies to ensure players are on the field performing at their best. Our team of wonderful parents who score, prepare fantastic lunches, set up fields, organise ice and help out with any task needed.

Finally this brings a close to a wonderful time in our lives and the end of an amazing junior representative cricket experience. To the players, thank you for the privilege of coaching you over the last four years. Thank you for the trust you have had in our coaching, the hard work you have put in, the respect you have always shown and the pleasure you have given us all as we have watched you display your amazing talents as cricketers. It has been an honour to be a part of your cricket journey and whilst you have had many remarkable cricket achievements the thing we are most proud of is the fantastic young men you are developing into and the great friendships you have made within the team. Best of luck in your cricketing future.

President’s Cup – Under 16 Andrew Blamey Cup

2015/16 Andrew Blamey Cup - Equal first on points

Congratulations to the Manly U16 Presidents Cup team, coming together this season and forming a very talented and competitive side, finishing the season on equal points with Hornsby at the top on the competition with five wins and one loss each.

Our team was made up of the following players: Jack McKenna (captain), Mitchell Beach, Tom Braund, Sam Callow, Reiley Dunlop, Noah Gammage, Adam Hayes, Meet Patel, Cameron Powell, Luke Trbojevic, Daniel Ward, Jadon Wilson Filled in: Nicholas Marsh

We welcomed a number of Manly-Warringah debutantes to the side this year. Congratulations to Reiley Dunlop, Sam Callow, Noah Gammage, Adam Hayes and Cameron Powell on rising to the challenge of representative cricket, fitting in to the side wonderfully well.

Every player contributed to the success of the team, developed their skills and matured as both cricketers and young men. Playing each game with a great competitive spirit. Manly-Warringah Junior Cricket Association – 2015/16 Annual Report

Hard fought wins against Newcastle and Central Coast got our season away to a great start and set the tone for future games. These boys were fighters.

A 5 run loss to a rejuvenated Penrith side in round 3 meant the boys had their backs to the wall.

They drew level with competition leaders Hornsby in the second last round of the season beating them with a tenacious victory. Cameron Powell’s six off the last ball to seal a 4 run victory seared into the memory of all. Never in doubt really!

The boys headed off to Sutherland for the last game of their junior representative careers knowing that a win was needed to finish on equal points with Hornsby. Things did not go to plan and things started to slip away from us with a wonderful 86 run partnership from their number 2 and 4 batsman taking the score to 2 for 128 with 16 overs in hand.

Cricket is a funny game sometimes and pressure does strange things. Tom Braund took the important wicket of their opener for 72 well-made runs and the cracks started to appear! Spellbinding second spells from Tom Braund (4 for 18 off 10) and Jadon Wilson (3 for 37 off 10) completely changed the game. The intensity in the field was a joy to watch. A remarkable 12 over period saw us take 9 wickets for 35 runs and it was game over.

These boys sure are tough and they proved it week in week out, standing up when the pressure was really on.

Congratulations to Jadon Wilson who is our recipient of the player of the season award. Jadon was our leading wicket taker with 15 wickets at an average of 11.4, scored 101 runs at 20.2, took 4 catches and affected one run out.

Special mention must go to Tom Braund who took 12 wickets at a remarkable 5.58!

Mitchell Beach was our top runs scorer with 130 runs at 21.6 and also led the fielding stats taking 7 catches.

What a great season to complete a wonderful junior representative journey.

Thank you to all the parents who made things work like clockwork every week.

It’s been fun and we are all better for the experience.
