EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I am pleased to present the 101st Annual Report for 2012 – 2013 for your consideration.

I wish to express my thanks on your behalf to Senior Vice President Paul Stapleton, Administration Officer Craig Menzies, Treasurer Paul Vanderlight and Club Secretaries James Scott (Carlingford Waratah), Tom McMurtry (Epping YMCA), Paul Stewart (Meadowbank), Scott Martin (North Ryde RSL), Matt Roberts (Rydalmere), Robert Kordish (Vikings) and Alan Harrison (West Ryde Rovers), for their assistance in running the Senior cricket during the season. Also my thanks to Junior Chairman Greg Berriman and the Junior Executive Committee and Committee Members for the running of the Junior Competition. We specially thank Greg Berriman of Rydalmere and Dundas United CCs for organising the printing.

The Grading Committee consisted of each Club Secretary or Delegate along with the President, Administration Officer, Treasurer and Senior Vice President. There were only four nominations for 1st Grade and after lengthy discussions and debate Rydalmere and North Ryde RSL had an extra team each promoted to 1st Grade thus having a six team competition instead of a four team competition. The grading of 1st grade would be continually assessed during the season and feedback would be discussed prior to next season’s Grading Committee.

31 teams nominated for the senior competition with the Grading Committee finally settling on five grades. First to fourth grades comprised six teams each and 5th grade containing seven sides thus creating a bye. In 2nd grade the new team pulled out after the Grading, causing a bye in 2nd Grade.

Each player was given five (5) provisional matches to enable the Executive Committee to control the grading of the players during the season. We convey our thanks to the Grading Committee for their time and effort in carrying out their duties. Our aim is to continually improve the system of the Grading of teams and players whilst working with myCricket statistics.

66 Junior teams registered to compete across the 10 Junior grades from Under 16 to Under 9 which was an increase of 5 teams from last season. We convey our thanks to the Junior Committee in running the Junior competitions and the assistance provided from the Clubs. Also we must recognise the efforts by the Junior Committee in organising the qualifications of Junior Umpires amongst their ranks of coaches, managers, parents and players. We saw the next step up by these umpires into the Rep games and both the Junior and Senior games including the semis and finals thus gaining more experience out in the middle. We will continue to encourage Juniors as well as Seniors to sit for their Umpires ticket and make themselves available to umpire during the senior season.

The myCricket electronic system is now working better for all with the occasional late entries being entered. As a result fines and penalties have been applied to the seniors which will need further discussions and agreement by all on the most applicable penalty system for late entry of results.

We convey our thanks to the Local Government Councils and staff for their assistance and allocation of the various grounds for seniors and juniors for the season, those Councils being Ryde, Hornsby and Parramatta.

Ryde City Council at their Council meeting in late 2012 presented me with a plaque “IN COMMERATION OF NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION ACHIEVING 100 SEASONS OF CRICKET IN THE CITY OF RYDE 1908 – 2012”. I accepted it on behalf of NDCA from the Mayor City OF Ryde Clr Ivan Petch.

We also thank the local Schools and staff for allowing us to play on their grounds for juniors and seniors, those schools were Epping Boys High School, Epping North Primary and Carlingford Primary. We must also acknowledge our thanks to the Junior Clubs in organising with Councils and schools for the hire of grounds for the Junior Competitions.

NDCA was represented at the Ryde City Sports Advisory Council Meetings, the Meadowbank Users Group and the Hornsby Shire Council Sports Council Meetings during the season. At the Hornsby December meeting it was agreed to disband the regular meeting and only meet at the summer and winter allocation nights. NDCA still have direct discussions with Hornsby Council regarding cricket matters if and when they arrive.

We again ran a Captain’s night at the start of the season and it was well attended. We explained our Local Rules and there were many questions asked and some understandings were explained and sorted out. The handout has been put up on the web for all to take note. The Spirit of the Game and Preamble was discussed including the duties of Captains. Sadly during the senior semis and finals there were incidents reported of unnamed players on and off the field of play not behaving within the Spirit of the Game. The Umpires Association is investigating these incidents and will report back to NDCA.

The Keith Hinchcliffe Spirit of Cricket Trophy for First Grade was not awarded this season. 3

Senior Vice President Paul Stapleton facilitated meetings with Senior Club Secretarys and Delegates on Planning for the Future of NDCA. Various ideas, thoughts and points of view were drawn up on butcher’s paper and from these some major topics were agreed for future meetings.

One of the main points was what are we going to do with First Grade having only four Clubs participating. We need other Clubs to think about strengthening their Clubs and maybe get back into 1st Grade. Another option was to speak to surrounding Cricket Associations with the intention of having a combined First Grade competition. Initial discussions were had with Parramatta District Cricket Association and Hornsby Kuring-gai & Hills District Cricket Association but it was felt that they were strong and had numbers in their top competitions and there were a number of obstacles to get before been accepted. We then had discussions with Northern Suburbs Cricket Association who are in a similar situation to us with falling numbers. From the discussions, a draft plan was tabled for two-six team 1st Grade competitions to be played on turf. NDCA have agreed to continue with the discussions, sadly only two Clubs, West Ryde Rovers and Carlingford Waratah replying in writing with their thoughts whilst the other Clubs just put up their hands in approval. At this point in time Paul is trying to get written replies from NSCA re what their Clubs thoughts are, so that we can continue to go along the path of a combined 1st Grade competition.

Wet Weather Committee The Committee was Kel Gray, Dale Arnott and Alan Harrison ably assisted by President John Crane. There was a change in the rain season this year with good weather at the start but down cam the rain in February and March. All grounds were closed on 2 and 23 February and the 2 March with very light showers during the Finals with all being completed. The Committee visited many grounds during these wet periods and many calls were received by John from Councils re the turf . Decisions of the Committee are made after notice from Councils whether turfs or synthetic wickets were closed and after taking into consideration our duty of care for the safety of all registered players. We convey our thanks to Kel, Dale, Alan and John.Umpires The Umpires Association continually aims to cover a Grade per round with the available umpires, so that each grade would have an umpire at least once or maybe twice per season, enabling the costs to be spread evenly among teams. With the injury to Bob Flint before the season we only had John Crane and Peter Tate stand during the season with Craig Menzies umpiring when 1st Grade turfs were out.

Umpires The Umpires Association continually aims to cover a Grade per round with the available umpires, so that each grade would have an umpire at least once or maybe twice per season, enabling the costs to be spread evenly among teams. With the ongoing injuries to Bob Flint and John Boyles we only had John Crane and Peter Tate standing at the start of the season. Then John Vanderlight joined us early in the season with Greg Berriman standing when his team had a bye as well as Homer Paxton when available from Shires Umpiring. Near the end of the season we were joined by qualified Junior Umpires Nirmal De Silva, Ian Sinden and Bill Perrins.

Eight of the ten games in the Semi-Finals were covered by umpires, and all five Grades had two umpires in the Finals. We convey our thanks to those umpires being Ajit Madan, John Vanderlight, Homer Paxton, Ron Vidler, Ian Sinden, Brian Wiseman, Peter Tate, Nirmal De Silva, Peter Honeywood and Craig Menzies.

We continually encourage all players, managers and coaches for seniors and juniors to sit for the NSW Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association training and examination course in Basic, Level 1 and Level 2. The juniors once again organised a training and examination Umpire’s course following their success last season. Through the organisation of Homer Paxton we were able to appoint some of these Junior Umpires to the senior games to get the on-field experience.

The Umpires Association are putting plans in place to organize an examination course for both senior and junior nominations in the near distant future. We hope to have all of our future Umpires qualified by the NSWCU&SA.

Administration Officer’s Report:

This season saw the introduction of the position of Administration Officer to the Association. This position was introduced to perform the work of the Association at the direction of the Executive Committee much the same as the Secretary Manager of a Sports Club is directed by the Board of Directors. The position was established because the Association has found it increasingly difficult to attract sufficient volunteers to perform the work required to run the Association.

The Association again had a successful season with the senior competition holding strong at thirty teams and the junior competition increasing slightly to sixty-six teams. Our strong junior competition has had a direct effect of the success of our representative teams in the NSWDCA competition with four sides narrowly missing out on a semi-finals berth. The deep and strength of our junior competition also showed out with our nomination of two Moore Shield (under 14) teams for the inter-association competition.

Season 2012-13 sees the Association make a $2,130 book loss, with a retained surplus of $31,124.

Cash collections from clubs and others amounted to $114,052 with payments totalling $115,878 as disclosed in the Statement of Cash Flows in the Financial Statements.

Fees received from the senior afternoon competition amounted to $37,636 plus $11,973 registration fees being received from senior players. The junior morning competition continues to contribute to the smooth running of the Association with their players paying $29,000 in fees and the representative players contributing $10,280.

During the season we have maintained funds for the future upgrade and improvement of the grounds and fields that we play on. A total of $55,000 remains set aside to assist councils and schools maintain their wickets and grounds to a standard that ensures our players can enjoy the facilities at the grounds. If any clubs have suggestions for grounds that require improvement pass them along to the committee to follow up with the councils and schools.

Ground hire from councils and schools continue to be our major cost at $33,013.

NSWDCA continued to reimburse Associations for umpires fees incurred in running the inter-Association competition. On behalf of the NDCA I would thank NSWDCA and Cricket NSW for this gesture which amounted to $3,565.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIRST GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere

From the outset the 2012/13 season was one of intrigue. The 2011/12 grand final hinted at a possible changing of the guard in 1st grade, with West Ryde Rovers and Carlingford Waratah leading the way. Could these teams press on with their success of last season, or would the recent NDCA heavyweights of Rydalmere and North Ryde reassert themselves? Added to this a significant change in the competition make up saw the Vikings and Epping YMCA drop down to second grade – and with no other clubs willing to fill the breach, the burden fell upon Rydalmere and North Ryde RSL to provide two teams each in the top grade. The competition can roughly be broken up into 3 rounds (1-5, 6-10, 11-15) and after the first full round of matches both the current premiers West Ryde and Carlingford were again staking their claim, sharing first place with both teams on 21 points and only quotient separating them. Behind them in third and fourth spots were Rydalmere and North Ryde RSL Gold, both on 16 points and similarly only separated by quotient. In fifth and sixth places were North Ryde RSL Blue and Rydalmere Sky Blue on 11 points – again separated by quotient only. In round 6, North Ryde RSL Gold made a move with an outright win over their RSL Blue club compatriots – only to follow it up with three successive losses. In round 7 West Ryde Rovers took outright points, also over NRRSL Blue and kept themselves right in the mix, just one point behind Carlingford who were moving along nicely in first place. By round 10 Rydalmere had strung together five success wins to jump into first place by one point. From there it was Rydalmere and West Ryde vying for the minor premiership with only one point separating the teams until a round 15 showdown, in which the Rovers took the points and the first placed advantage heading into the finals. North Ryde RSL Gold finished in third place, finding late form with three wins out of their last four matches, ensuring a semi-final against old foes Rydalmere - and Carlingford, after leading earlier in the season, finished in fourth position; winning only one match from their last seven didn’t help their cause and meant they would be up against West Ryde in the semi.

The first semi-final at Eastwood Oval ended up being a fairly one-sided affair, with Carlingford being beaten by the Rovers on the first day. first, Carlingford were bundled out for just 95, with the Rovers Matt Egan the main destroyer with 5/35. In reply the Rovers raced to 0/129 at stumps – and that was all she wrote as Carlo decided they’d had enough for the season. The Rovers had booked their spot in a second successive grand final and had the Sunday off to rest and perhaps watch some of the second semi-final at ELS Hall. At ELS Hall #1 a classic semi-final encounter was underway between Rydalmere and North Ryde. Winning the toss and batting first, Rydalmere were quickly in trouble at a perilous 4/6 on a pitch that seemed slightly tacky, but played a few more tricks early on than it appeared would be the case. The North Ryde bowling was tight and fielding enthusiastic and Rydalmere found themselves in further trouble at 8/61 – a position it would seem almost impossible to resurrect themselves from. Despite this, a 52 run ninth wicket stand between the old dinosaurs Matt Kennedy (27) and Steve Holland (24*) saw Rydalmere post a meagre, yet somewhat competitive total of 114, as the teams swapped roles for the last hour of play on day 1. North Ryde were rightly happy with their work with the ball and were best served by young Matt Maittlen, who took 4/20 and is showing the potential to be a very fine young fast bowler. 14

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIRST GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere Cont.

As it so often proves, small totals in finals are difficult to overcome and with runs on the board, the Wrens defended their total with gusto. At stumps on day 1, North Ryde were 2/26, with their most experienced players, captain Kelvin Gray and Luke MacNab both back in the sheds. Day 2 provided a thrilling finish to the match, as the teams both inched closer to the win. Rydalmere grabbed a wicket early in the day’s play and then Steve Holland broke the game wide open with two wickets in an over to have North Ryde under the pump at 5/47. Wickets then fell steadily as Rydalmere took the ascendancy before a late partnership added a twist and ensured a grandstand finish. In the closing overs of the game, North Ryde were 9/108, needing only a tantalising 7 runs to win before Matt Kennedy grabbed the last wicket to steal the win for the Wrens. For Rydalmere Steve Holland was outstanding – scoring a crucial 24 runs and taking 4/22 to lead the Wrens to their seventh grand final appearance in the past eight seasons. So with the Herb Ward Cup on the line, Rydalmere and West Ryde Rovers made their way to ELS Hall # 1 to battle it out for the 2012/13 Premiership; a minor premiership replay between the two teams that had been the most consistent throughout the season. The weather for the weekend was fine and sunny and the pitch firm and true. The Rovers won the toss and asked Rydalmere to bat first and the Wrens again found themselves in a spot of bother at 4/34; the result of some good tight bowling, in particular from all rounder John Neville. From there a crucial 71 run partnership between Ash Flint (49) and Ricardo Palmer (28) wrestled momentum back for Rydalmere to have them in a healthier position, taking the score past 100. Ash Flint showed nice touch, deftly using the late cut to his advantage before it was eventually his undoing and the partnership was broken at 5/105. The last five Rydalmere wickets managed another 40 runs and still with an hours play in the day, the Wrens were dismissed for 145. For the Rovers the pick of the bowlers were John Neville who took 3/46 and Nick Fairbairn, who made the trip up from Canberra to take 4/27. With everything to play for, the two teams took the field for the final innings of the season – Rovers needing 146 runs or a draw to retain the Herb Ward Cup and Rydalmere needing 10 wickets to reclaim the title. The Wrens would again need to draw on their experience and bowl well - and they did so, applying significant pressure on the Rovers top order in the final hour of day 1. Two early wickets saw West Ryde under the pump at 2/11 – which became 3/21 in the shadows of stumps as Todd Palmer executed a superb direct hit run out after a tight single was attempted in the second last over of the day. Both teams would have fancied their chances as they retired for the evening – with seemingly another tight finish on the menu for Sunday to decide the premiership. The early exchanges on day 2 shaped the days play as Rydalmere put a stranglehold on the Rovers batsman, with Papworth and Kennedy again bowling quality opening spells. Papworth in particular bowling a sustained opening spell of line and length outswing that had the batsman tied in knots. Two more early wickets fell to have the Rovers in trouble at 5/38 before Nick Blyth (23) and John Neville (36) showed middle order resistance and tried to resurrect the Rovers innings. When Blyth was dismissed to a fired up Lachy Johnson, Neville began to play a few more shots and he increasingly became the key wicket, with hopes of a repeat of his round 15 heroics over Rydalmere no doubt in the Rovers minds. It wasn’t to be however as Matt Kennedy came back into the attack and accounted for Neville to have the score 8/102 and the Rovers now needing something special to score the remaining runs. The scored moved to 108 before Ricardo Palmer dismissed Plichta LBW and fittingly it was Steve Holland who took the final wicket to seal the match and the premiership, with West Ryde dismissed for 111. The Rydalmere bowling throughout the finals had been superb, defending small totals in both matches with sustained quality in line and length and excellent catching and fielding. In the final Brett Papworth took 2/22, Lachlan Johnson 2/19 and Matt Kennedy 3/27. This Rydalmere team has built a strong record in 1st grade with seven grand final appearances in the past eight seasons and five premiership wins in that time. It is a record the team is proud of. The Wrens look forward to the challenges that next season may hold, with the potential changes to and strengthening of the 1st grade competition.

SECOND GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL

The 2nd grade season for 2012/2013 was made up of 5 sides: North Ryde RSL, Rydalmere, Vikings, Epping YMCA & West Ryde Rovers. It was extremely enjoyable and competitive season, with any team on their day being able to take the points on offer. Some notable performances for the year were:  There were 6 centuries (Simon Woodhouse 136, Scott Deveridge 101*, Lalandra Wijesekera 150*, Craig Roser 116, Shane Moise 103* & Brad Worland 100)  Simon Woodhouse amassed 571 runs at an average of 57.10. A fantastic effort.  Scott Whitehead 31 wickets at 10.65 a piece including 7/87 against Epping YMCA before injury cruelly ended his season  Matt Waygood 7/24 in the Semi Final against Epping YMCA

Epping YMCA were clear minor premiers and I believe would have been undefeated if not for a wedding or bucks party. They were by far the most consistent side in the competition and deserved that title. It was a lot closer between the other sides who were jostling for the remaining three spots. In the end they went to Vikings, Rydalmere and North Ryde RSL. 16

THE SENIOR COMPETITION SECOND GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont. Semi Finals The semi finals were two different affairs. Rydalmere vs Vikings – Vikings won the toss and sent Rydalmere into bat. They were 5-67 before L Wijesekera and N Ahluwalia put on a 172 run partnership to amass a good score of 8/230 Dec. Wickets fell at regular intervals and even the old heads of Roser and Coppa couldn’t stop the flow of wickets. Vikings eventually bowled out for 124 and Rydalmere moving into the final. North Ryde vs Epping YMCA – Epping won the toss and elected to send North Ryde into bat. North Ryde put on a number of small partnerships and were bowled out at the end of the day for a competitive 181. Andrew Harrison scoring a determined 53. Epping YMCA’s innings started poorly and never recovered. Matt Waygood produced a fantastic spell of bowling, blasting through the Y with figures of 7/24. Epping were eventually bowled out for 58, thus setting up a final of the 3rd and 4th placed teams. Final North Ryde RSL won the toss and sent Rydalmere into bat. We managed a couple of early breakthroughs but R Hinchcliff 29 & L Wijesekera 25 steadied the ship. A couple of useful innings by N Aluwahlia and captain Venkat helped Rydalmere to a total of 141. North Ryde lost a couple of early wickets on day 1 to leave the match evenly poised. Day 2 saw Shane Moise 63 & Andrew Harrison 51 push North Ryde towards victory. A cheeky 43* by Corey Donnell put the match beyond doubt and North Ryde finished 8/222 and claimed the elusive 2nd grade title. With 1 player under the age of 35 and a handful over 50, this was a fantastic effort by the boys and shows that a champion team beats a team of champions any day. I would also like to acknowledge all the other captains and their players in 2nd grade on what was a very enjoyable season with some great cricket played along the way. Thanks also to the NDCA committee for another job well done in all the work you do behind the scenes to ensure we get to play our cricket each week. Corey Donnell, North Ryde RSL 2nd Grade Captain

THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: Meadowbank The season began as it ended with Meadowbank playing Rydalmere. It was a one-dayer and at drinks after 17 overs, Rydalmere was 1-172! Hayden Rogers was smashing Meadowbank. He was out shortly after drinks for 107 and Rydalmere were all out for 225 in the 32nd over. Meadowbank were 2-17 in reply when the Ireland brothers came together and put on 170 with Luke Ireland scoring 118 in the Meadowbank total of 4-229.

Meadowbank were top of the table on quotient after Round 1 and weren’t headed until Round 14 when Rydalmere gained 10 points for a forfeit and Meadowbank and Carlingford got 2 points each from a second-day washout.

Meadowbank, Carlingford Waratah and Rydalmere dominated the competition. West Ryde Rovers two teams - Blue and White struggled for numbers. When they had full teams they were a threat to everyone.

Rovers – White had two wins over Vikings and in Round 15 pushed Meadowbank hard, only losing in the last over. Brendan Morris was outstanding for Rovers scoring 529 runs from 13 innings at an average of 52.9 and a highest score of 114 not out. He also took 16 wickets at an average of 25.63.

Rovers – Blue had a win against Rydalmere and two wins against Rovers White. Leading run scorer was Diluk Kannangara with 284 runs at an average of 31.56. Leading wicket takers were Aviv Pudipeddi with 17 wickets at 14.59 and Rajeevan Yoganathan with 17 wickets at 20.41.

Vikings finished fourth on 50 points from three wins against Rovers – Blue, two wins against Carlingford Waratah and a win against Rovers – White. Vikings played Rydalmere in the semi-finals and had them 7-91 before Rydalmere made it to 144. Vikings couldn’t capitalise and were bowled out for 40. Vikings strength all season had been their batting with leading run scorer in third grade, Hannibal Singh scoring 608 runs from 17 innings at an average of 38 and Richard Hughes with 426 runs from 13 innings at an average of 32.77. Vikings struggled to take wickets – only taking 67 all season compared with 140 taken by Meadowbank and 138 by Carlingford.

17

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: Meadowbank cont.

Carlingford Waratah and Meadowbank finished the competition even on 66 points with Carlingford ahead of Meadowbank by 0.056 on quotient – Carlingford second and Meadowbank third. It was close all season with Meadowbank just ahead of Carlingford on quotient until the last round.

In the semi-final Meadowbank won the toss and sent Carlingford in to bat. 78.1 overs (including 39 maidens) later, Carlingford were all out for 107.

Meadowbank put on 4 runs without loss before stumps and the arm wrestle continued on Sunday. Meadowbank captain Damian Ireland came in at 1-16. He was the rock that won the game. Things were not looking good at 8-84 when Andrew Maher joined Damian at the crease but they guiding Meadowbank to 8-109 in the 11th of the 17 overs in the last hour. Damian batted for more than three and a half hours ending up on 28 not out.

Greg and William Wark were the leading run scorers for Carlingford in the semi-final and throughout the season – Greg with 514 runs in 14 innings at an average of 46.73 and Will with 351 runs at 39 from 13 innings. Leading wicket taker for Carlingford was Mark Besanvalle with 27 wickets at 14.59 from 14 matches – one more match and just three more wickets than his brother Steve who plays for Meadowbank.

The season ended as it began with Meadowbank playing Rydalmere. Meadowbank won the toss and sent Rydalmere in to bat. Luke Ireland and Scott Proctor opened the bowling with Scott bowling his tempting spinners. He had Hayden Rogers caught, and then bowled Josh Raven inside the first 15 minutes. Luke picked up Emmett Hope and Rydalmere never recovered. They were all out before tea for 82 from 29 overs with Luke picking up 5-17 from 9 overs.

Meadowbank passed Rydalmere’s total with three wickets down before the end of play for the day. Meadowbank had reached 7-173 on Sunday with Damian Ireland on 71 before Rydalmere called play off.

Hayden Rogers was the leading wicket taker in third grade taking 37 wickets and conceding only 7.68 runs per wicket. He also scored 319 runs at an average of 24.54. Josh Raven scored 406 runs at an average of 36.91 and took 19 wickets at 14.26. Matt Trodden was also a big contributor with 22 wickets at 14.36

Meadowbank’s leading wicket takers and run scorers were Iain McCredden (27 wickets at 15.44 and 368 runs at 28.31), Scott Proctor (23 wickets at 16.26 and 285 runs at 28.5) Luke Ireland (20 wickets at 12.2 and 366 runs at 33.27) Damian Ireland (469 runs at 36.08) and Steve Besanvalle (24 wickets at 14.83).

Season 2012-13 was Meadowbank’s 40th season in the NDCA – a milestone celebrated during the season. We also celebrated Paul Stewart’s 400th game for Meadowbank – almost all at wicket-keeper – and it was a game in which he took 5 catches and scored 11 not out, helping guide the team to a last over victory.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL

There were six teams in the 2012-2013 4th grade competition.

Epping YMCA finished 6th, but distinguished themselves by defeating both of the ultimate Grand Finalists during the course of the season – emphasising just how little separated the teams in this grade. Matt Mulligan was the standout performer for the Y, scoring over 500 runs at an average above 30, and taking 18 wickets at 22.

Rydalmere won only 4 games during the season, but at full strength had a formidable batting line-up, featuring Bala Narayanasamy (400 runs at 33.33), Leigh Rollason (289 runs at 36.13) and Archit Goradia (234 runs at 21.3). Archit was also an astute skipper, and complemented his runs with 24 wickets at an average better than 16.

West Ryde Rovers were an enigmatic side who, although they were placed 4th at the end of the regular season, could well have won the competition with an ounce of luck. Their bowling outfit was as strong as any, with Peter Lebreton (26 wickets at below 20) and Dylan Brogan (21 wickets at less than 10 per wicket!) the standouts. Ashwin Govender (536 runs at 31.53) and Garsha Heydant (444 runs at better than 40 per innings) were both consistent performers with the bat. Pat Small was, as always, a threat to all opponents with both bat and ball (317 runs at 29 and 16 wickets at just under 20).

Vikings Red were a young side who showed throughout the course of the season that many of their players will feature prominently in higher grades in the coming years. The team was well captained by Anthony Azize, who led from the front with 379 runs at 38 (outscoring his Vikings Blue Dad, Phil, by 1 run). Michael O’Beid also managed bragging rights over his father with his 304 runs at 25 eclipsing Tony’s 283 runs at 24. Fraser Tarnow-Mordi was an outstanding performer with the ball all season, finishing with 31 wickets at just over 17.

Vikings Blue are an experienced unit and were always going to be hard to beat if they could win enough games during the season to get themselves into the semi-finals. In the end they did that comfortably, largely on the back of the efforts of their three seasoned veterans – Barry Whitehead (37 wickets at 17, and 232 runs at 26), Vikram Craig (387 runs at 35) and Phil Azize (378 runs at an average of 63!). Robert Kordish and Dale Arnott provided admirable support with the ball, both taking more than 20 wickets at around 17 runs apiece.

North Ryde RSL featured a number of players who played, or were still eligible to play, junior cricket in 2012-2013. Despite that inexperience the team lost just two matches during the regular season, with a number of victories achieved in circumstances where the opposition appeared to have the upper hand at some stage.

Although all players contributed throughout the course of the season, the efforts of 15 year-old Michael Spackman (369 runs at 26.4 and 17 wickets at 13.35), 16-year old Ollie Forbes-Smith (332 runs at better than 30, and 11 catches), 14- year old Josh Condon (296 runs at just under 30, and 22 wickets at 15), and 16-year old Bill Furness (23 wickets at 18.6 and 188 runs at 31.3) were especially noteworthy.

Semi-finals

Both of these games were extremely hard-fought, and could easily have been lost by the teams that ultimately won them.

2nd placed Vikings Red won the toss in their match against 3rd placed Vikings Blue and elected to bat. After being 4 for 39, a 50-run partnership between Michael O’Beid and young Damian Rapisarda steadied the ship, and gave the Reds some hope of a defendable score – even moreso when Damian combined with Joshua Good for another significant partnership to get the total up towards 130. With the last 5 wickets falling for just 20 runs though (including Rapisarda last man out for a gutsy 30), the Reds would probably have been a little disappointed to finish with just 146. Rob Kordish and Barry Whitehead were the pick of the Blue bowlers with 4-17 and 3-38 respectively.

The Reds’ disappointment had turned to optimism by the end of Day 1 however, with John Day and Phil Azize both run out before stumps had been drawn, and less than 10 runs on the board. Things didn’t improve much for the Blues on Day 2, with wickets falling consistently, and runs hard to come by. The one shining light was young No. 4 Patrick

19

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont.

Needham, who kept his head and his wicket while all those around him were losing theirs. In the end he found an able ally in No. 10, Sam Sardana, and the two combined for a stirring and match-winning 9th wicket partnership of 45 to see the Blues home, and into yet another Grand Final. Bitter disappointment for the Reds, who had been in the top 2 sides throughout the entire season.

In the other semi between 4th placed West Ryde Rovers and North Ryde RSL the Rovers won the toss and invited the minor premiers to have a bat. Grahame Clinton’s 44 runs would ultimately prove to be worth their weight in gold, but North Ryde were disappointed with their efforts overall, relying on a last-wicket partnership of 24 from nos. 10 and 11, Marlon Randeniya and Michael Goodhue, to scrape out a total of just 121. Left-armer Dylan Brogan was the pick of the bowlers with 4-24, but West Ryde were left to rue a number of dropped chances that, if taken, could well have seen their opponents bowled out for less than 100. Those missed opportunities would have loomed even larger in the minds of the Rovers when they found themselves 6 wickets down for just 43 runs by stumps on Day 1, and a further wicket down after the opening over of Day 2.

Peter Lebreton and Dylan Brogan were not planning on raising the white flag however and, with fortune favouring the brave, they took the bowlers on and rattled up a 50-run partnership in just 10 overs. Then, just when it seemed the batting side had tilted the pendulum in their favour, Brogan fell for 35, leaving Lebreton to try to steer the side home. Although he did an admirable job of negotiating the strike, and keeping the scoreboard ticking over, North Ryde were able to pick up the remaining 2 wickets at the other end – the last of those falling with just 6 runs separating the teams.

The Rovers gallantly tried to force an outright result in the time remaining, but with an hour left to play it had become clear that the first innings result in favour of the minor premiers would see them through to face Vikings Blue in the premiership decider.

Grand Final

Despite the absence of their highest scorer from the semi-final, Grahame Clinton, North Ryde had no hesitation in batting when the coin fell their way at the start of the Grand Final. With 2 wickets down for just 1 run within the first five overs that didn’t look like such a great decision. But 20-plus contributions from North Ryde’s middle order of Goodhue, Spackman and Ferguson saw the batting side recover admirably to a respectable 4-88 at the second drinks break on Day 1. Suddenly the game was turned on its head - with 2 quick wickets falling to Sam Sardana, and a 4th wicket to the indefatigable Barry Whitehead plunging North Ryde into dire trouble at 7-89, and still a day and a half’s cricket left to play.

As they had done all season however, the young North Ryde batsmen (to call them tail-enders would be to do them a major disservice) dug deep to work their team slowly but surely out of the predicament in which they found themselves. Whilst veteran Shane Miller initially showed the way with a disciplined and determined innings of his own, first Josh Condon (34), then Bill Furness (86 not out) and Marlon Randeniya (12), showed application, skill and maturity beyond their years to keep the Vikings out in the field for another 72 overs – taking the innings two hours into Day 2 in the process, and adding an invaluable 157 runs to the North Ryde total along the way.

The partnerships of 64 between Josh and Bill and 72 between Bill and Marlon were the 2nd highest for the 9th and 10th wickets respectively in any grade of the NDCA for the 2012-2013 season. For junior cricketers to have achieved such feats under the intense pressure of a Grand Final might seem extraordinary to others, but to those of us who have seen these young men, and their teammates, perform coolly under duress week in and week out during the course the past two seasons, it merely reflected what we already knew about their ability and temperament.

247 is a tough chase in any game, let alone in a Grand Final with barely 3 hours of batting time left (albeit with the mandatory 17 overs in the final hour).

For the Vikings to have any chance it was clear their best players would need to deliver, and it was therefore no surprise to see Vikram Craig and Phil Azize stride out to open the innings.

20

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: North Ryde RSL cont.

Their partnership was a masterclass in how to go about chasing a large total, building the innings steadily, without taking undue risk at the outset, establishing a platform from which to launch once the shine was off the ball.

Things were proceeding according to plan. After 21 overs Vikings were 0- 71. In the next 4 overs they added 41 runs, still without the loss of a wicket. Then a skied drive from Phil Azize saw the ball almost collect snow, it went that high. 16-year old Sean White, standing at mid-off, shouted “Mine” instantaneously, and proceeded to complete the sort of steepling catch that would ordinarily send jitters through the most seasoned campaigner, as if it was nothing at all. We were finally on our way, or so we thought.

Where Phil had left off, Vikram took over, launching a brutal attack on the bowlers and, along with Patrick Needham, making sure the momentum of the innings was not lost. The pair added 48 runs in 8 overs, and looked capable of seeing the Vikings all the way home, before a brilliant piece of fielding from Marlon Randeniya saw Patrick Needham caught short when sent back by his partner after turning for a second run.

By this stage we were into the last hour, and the asking rate was hovering at just over a run a ball. But with Vikram in full flight, and plenty of hitting power to come, the batting side could not help but feel that victory was still within their grasp.

The next hour of play will, I suspect, linger long in the memories of all those who played, and the memories of the many spectators who had gathered to watch the game’s final overs. Players from both sides distinguished themselves – young Josh Condon bowling a controlled spell in difficult circumstances, Vikram Craig continuing the batting onslaught, raising his bat to acknowledge a magnificent century along the way, and finding willing partners in Dale Arnott and Rob Kordish. With one over to play, 5 wickets in hand, 12 runs required, and Vikram and Rob not out 109 and 20 respectively, both sides had reason to consider they were in with a serious chance of hoisting the silverware.

Enter Andrew Ferguson, North Ryde’s opening bowler, who at that point had figures of 0-38 off 7 overs, and had been taken for 14 runs in his 6th over. It is clearly tough for the batsmen in such situations, but no less so for the bowler. When it counted most though, Andrew delivered. In his 8th over, the 158th and final over of the match, he conceded just 2 runs, whilst taking 4 wickets, including a hat-trick, leaving Vikings an agonising 10 runs short of victory.

We have nothing but admiration for the way Vikings went about their task, and they will undoubtedly feel aggrieved that the match could not have gone into another over.

But as I said in the post-match speeches, I believe the North Ryde RSL team earned the right to have its name on the trophy this season. With arguably our best batsman absent, and no less than eight players aged 16 and under in our XI for the Grand Final, we were able to do enough to ensure our opponents could not secure what would have been a famous victory.

Indeed in 11 matches against the other top 4 sides during the course of the season we did not have our colours lowered once. It is a season our team will remember for many years to come, and we thank the other teams for making it so memorable.

To my team, including all those who represented North Ryde RSL’s 4th Grade during the course of the season, I can only say that in 31 seasons of competitive cricket I have never been prouder of any side in which I have played.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere Mos

The 2012/2013 NDCA 5th grade competitions was made up of seven teams this season, this included Rydalmere Mo’s, Rydalmere Sky Blue, Epping YMCA Red, Epping YMCA Blue, Carlingford Waratahs, North Ryde RSL and West Ryde Rovers.

In what seems an eternity ago, way back in September 2012, the NDCA 5th grade competition kicked off. Who would have known that the eventual grand finalists were to play each other on that day. Rydalmere Sky Blue were early competition favourites and constantly remained at the top of the table only to be pipped in the final round. The Rydalmere Mo’s, Epping YMCA Red and Carlingford Waratahs continually changed positions on the ladder as all the teams struggled to find consistency through the middle part of the competition.

Although not entirely reflected in the Ladder, the remaining three teams of Epping YMCA Blue, North Ryde RSL and West Ryde Rovers did play some very spirited cricket throughout season and on more than one occasion caused some upsets within the higher ranked teams. Of note, I would say that had Epping YMCA Blue not suffered from some early season injuries they would have been playing semi-final cricket and would have been very hard to beat. There is always next year, boys. Thanks to North Ryde RSL and West Ryde Rovers: you both should be very proud of your efforts this season and it’s always a pleasure to compete against you both.

In what can only be described as a very congested leader board, the 5th Grade minor premiership was only decided in the last round of the competition with only 5 points separating the top four sides. In fact, the minor premiership was determined by quotient after Rydalmere Mo’s and Epping YMCA Red remained tied on 56 Points.

At the end of the regular season the 5th grade points table was as follows:

Some of the individual stand outs for season 2012/13:

The standout player of the 5th grade NDCA competition would have to be O. Karsen who amassed a competition high of 455 runs at an average of 45.50. Not to stop there, he also lead the competition in bowling with 40 wickets at an average of 11.68.

There were 9 centurions in season 2012/13. M. Goodenough (104*), D. Falla (101*), O. Karsen (123), S. Baillie (128*), T. Baillie (112), P. Chandru (108), L. Saedi (114), M. Withey (103), and competition and North Ryde RSL stall ward J. Reay (128).

There were 17 five wicket hauls in season 2012/13, but the following four bowlers managed to achieve the feat on two occasions: P. Alice (6/20 + 5/9), O. Karsen (7/56 + 5/23), M. Harrison (6/34 + 5/21), and N. Birrell (6/38 + 5/53).

The top fielding stats for season 2012/13 were H. Mukherjee (15 catches and 2 run outs), G. Berriman (13 catches), and A. Cole (10 catches).

The standout Wicket Keeper for season 2012/13 was J. Fitzpatrick (14 catches and 5 stumpings)

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere Mos cont.

Finals

The semi-finals saw the top four teams play in identical matches as the final round of the regular season. However, the results were a little different to the previous week. Thankfully, the rain held off, and the first of the Semis saw the Rydalmere Mo’s up against the Carlingford Waratahs. A strong bowling performance from Rydalmere dismissed Carlingford for 63 runs halfway through day one. Rydalmere then back this up with an equally strong batting performance to be 3/246 (dec). Standout performance was M. Goodenough (4/17 and 104*). Rydalmere progressed to the Grand Final. A strong season from Carlingford will no doubt see them back stronger next year.

The other Semi Final between Rydalmere Sky Blue and Epping YMCA Red was a much closer contest. With Epping being sent in to bat, they were bowled out for a total of 110. Rydalmere in response were eventually dismissed for 174. Many teams would have given up at that stage, however Epping showed true cricketing spirit and attempted the huge task of trying for an outright win. Epping second innings resulted in a huge 6/218(Dec) of just 28 overs. Epping still felt they were in with a chance but a strong Rydalmere batting display saw them chase down the runs for the loss of only 4 wickets to claim the outright win as well. As in the other semi, Rydalmere progressed to the Grand Final. Epping should be very proud of their season and again, I am sure they will be back next year.

Grand Final Rydalmere Mo’s vs. Rydalmere Sky Blue

So the Grand Final was now set, and it was an all Rydalmere affair, with the two teams who met all the way back in round one now fighting it out for the premiership. It was going to be a tough battle!

In a true reflection of season 2012/13, the 5th grade grand final was extremely close and was not decided until the final 3 overs of day two. After winning the toss, Rydalmere Sky Blue were sent in to bat and were looking in a very solid position midway through day one. Sky Blue put on an opening partnership of 101 (A. Sharma 59 and N. Giri 41), which had built the foundation for their team.

The Mo’s were in trouble and needed something special. Enter N. Birrell (6/38), who changed the course of the game. Nick was strongly supported by D. Berriman (3/55) who enabled the Mo’s to dismiss Sky Blue for 196 late on day one. A freak afternoon shower restricted any further play with the Mo’s 0/7 at stumps.

A sunny and extremely warm day two ensured that a result was going to be achieved in this match. Resuming from the overnight score of 0/7, the Mo’s built steadily with an opening partnership of 73 (A Cole 45 and G Berriman 19). Unfortunately, once the first wicket fell a steady stream of wickets fell with no one being able to go on with it. The Mo’s again found themselves in trouble at 7/129, with Sky Blue’s bowler gaining the upper hand (H. Mukherjee 5/55). That was until N. Birrell (51*) entered the arena. The nerves were building with every ball bowled, however with only 3 overs left in the day the Mo’s passed the Sky Blue total with only 2 wickets in hand with the score at 8/197. It was truly a memorable victory. The game was played in great spirits, and the result could have easily gone to the Sky Blue lads, however it was the Mo’s day.

Finally, a big thank you to the NDCA Executive Committee, particularly John Crane, Paul Vanderlight, and Paul Stapleton and Secretary Craig Menzies for all the hard work and dedication shown in running such a successful and strong competition. So on behalf of the entire NDCA 5th Grade I wish to express my sincere thanks to you all.

I’m looking forward to another challenging season in 2013/14.

Aaron Cole,

5th Grade Mo’s Captain, Rydalmere Cricket Club

THE JUNIOR COMPETITION ANNUAL REPORT

This season we had 13 clubs participating in the Junior Competition. Those clubs fielded 66 teams in total. We ran competitions in the under 10s, under 11s and under 12s. In the under 13s and under 14s we had two divisions in each age group. In the under 15s and under 16s we merged the age groups to form three divisions (Chappell, Lillee and Marsh). Generally the response was positive to the merged competitions.

A highlight of the season was the fantastic results of our junior rep teams. Over the past few years, the Association, Rep Convenor, coaches and managers, parents and players have invested time in winter training squads, trials and more rigorous selection trials and it has paid dividends. Our rep teams have won more games this season than in our history. The under 16s, under 15s, under 14s and under 13s all went closing to grabbing a semi final spot whereas a few years ago we were trying to avoid wooden spoons. Well done to all involved and this year we are wanting to take that further and get teams into the semi-finals. Last year we had several teams on the brink of the semis and with continued hard work we are looking to play in the semis this year.

To assist in the development of our representative players our under 13 side again travelled to Orange for the Western NSW tournament and this year were victorious, so the good work that is being put into our representative program is showing some dividends.

Our competition is producing some high quality juniors with more players making it into the Emerging Blues squads. This year we can proudly report that these junior players made their respective age Emerging Blues squads:

 James Needham (Epping YMCA)

 Anthony Adlam (Dundas United)

 Nick Ford (Ryde Hunters Hill Pirates)

 Chris Ius (St Patrick’s College)

 Baxter Holt (Dundas United)

 Michael Robinson (St Patrick’s College)

 James Robertson (Dundas United)

I would like to thank the Junior Executive for their help. Thanks to the club delegates for attending the meetings, providing feedback and giving up their time to help promote cricket. Parents get involved by taking boys to and from training and games, watching them play, umpiring and scoring and encouraging their boys to participate. Do not under estimate your influence on the boys and as an Association we truly appreciate your efforts in making cricket the number one summer sport. Lastly, to all the players, thank you for playing, we hope you had an enjoyable season and we sincerely want you to come back next year and play again. To the boys entering the under 15s and under 16s competitions I urge you to consider playing some afternoon cricket with the Northern District Seniors Association. Increasing numbers of younger players are doing that now and many are winning competitions and contributing well with bat and ball. Cricket is a great individual and team sport and builds character and I welcome you to be part of this great game.

Round 1 – Home Northern District 172 def Illawarra 149

A good tough first up match against a strong side. We won the toss and elected to bat first looking to mount a reasonable total and not have to worry about bowling our 60 overs within the allotted time period. An early wicket saw Axel (55) join Cameron (62) at the crease and the pair put on a 101 run partnership, there was assistance in the middle order from Will (22) however we were bowled out for 172 in the 57th over.

Good pressure from our bowlers saw us take regular wickets and Illawarra were in trouble at 8 for 91 however the last two partnerships provided resolute in their efforts and managed to add a further 34 and 24 runs to give the parents some nervous overs on the side lines. The pick of the bowlers were Rohan 3 for 45 off 12 and Adam 2 for 18 off 8.3.

All in all a good first up win.

Round 2 – Away Northern District 116 def by Blacktown 4 / 118

The second round match against Blacktown was always going to be a tough one as we had played them previously at home and went down in a thriller. We again won the toss and again decided to bat first however the player’s minds were not focused as we had lost Angelo to injury the day before which would prevent him from bowling in the remainder of the tournament. There was also concern over Axel, who had pulled a neck muscle the previous day.

Without the concentration from the players only Adam (30) got going with the bat and we were again bundled out, this time for 116 after 51 overs.

The bowlers did their job with the ball and were well supported in the field and we managed to take regular wickets however we were not defending enough and Blacktown passed our score in the 39th over. The pick of the bowlers was Julian with 1 for 18 off 11 overs.

Round 3 – Away Manly 9 / 171 def by Northern District 1 / 172

For the next round we travelled to Manly to take on our “bunny” team. This year was the fourth year in a row we had faced them and was by far their best side so far. Concerted batting from Manly saw them face our their 60 overs and finish with a total of 9 for 171 with no batsman mounting any big score but everyone getting starts. Their highest score was 22 however all bar one reached double figures, this is the sort of effort that sets up big team scores if one or two players can go on with it.

Again our bowlers did an excellent job with seven bowlers used everyone except Julian took a wicket however he only conceded 15 runs off his 10 overs. Cameron took 2 for 16 off 7 overs.

Our turn to chase a total, the first time for the season and our openers Cameron 75* and Matthew 88 put on a magnificent 167 run opening stand with Matthew falling just 5 runs short of the winning total. 37

It was a great all round effort from the players and shows what they are truly capable of achieving.

Round 4 – Home South Eastern 7 / 243 def Northern District 7 / 237

With the season balancing on the edge the last thing the team needed was to lose a key member for the remainder of the season. After the mid-week training session some of the players were rough housing and Michael, our wicketkeeper, suffered a green stick fracture of the wrist. Due to this injury we called up our reserve wicketkeeper Cameron Price to fill the rather large hole left by Michael’s injury.

We started the match well and won our fourth toss for the season and this time elected to bowl. The effort in the field was outstanding considering the main motivator was absent. The bowling was tight and although we did not take a wicket until the 21st over, the score was only 63. The next 21 overs saw them add just 80 for the loss of four more wickets however in the last 18 overs we allowed then to add a further 100 runs. It really does help to have wickets in hand at the end of the innings. The pick of the bowlers was Adam who returned 4 for 45 off 12 overs.

If we were to win we would have to amass our largest team score since starting representative cricket at Creak Shield back in 2008.

It was not the best of starts losing Matthew (7) in the third over but Cameron (17) and Axel (290 steadied the innings until the 12th over when we lost Cameron with the score on 47. Axel departed three overs later with the score on 66. The run rate at this stage was excellent, 4.71, however we were losing wickets too quickly to make it count. That is when Adam (46) and Will (51) combined for a 51 run partnership to have us within 130 runs of victory and twenty overs remaining. Patrick (44) joined Will and this partnership yielded a further 64 runs and the equation was 63 required off 9 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

Unfortunately the total was just that little bit too large to chase and the team finished 7 runs short of the victory total and we were left wondering what might have been if not for Michael’s unlucky break.

Round 5 – Away Northern District 8 / 169 def Canterbury 113

The final round saw us take on Canterbury and it was our first chance to finish with a winning season. We lost the first toss of the season and were asked to bat. We progressed along nicely with partnerships of 24, 23, 29, 25 and 45 to have us 5 for 146 which is excellent except that we were in the 54th over so the final total was not going to be huge. The 55th and 56th overs were both maidens and we managed to finish with a respectable 169 after taking 11 off the last over. Adam (35), Axel (31) and Will (28) led the way with the bat.

It was our turn to bowl and we would finish the season in the field together as a team. With Michael injured and Cameron P unavailable for the match we called on Angelo to take the gloves for the final match and what an excellent performance he put in lifting the team with his enthusiasm.

We took wickets constantly with just two partnerships over 10. Tom 4 for 22 off 10 and Rohan 0 for 16 off 6 opened the bowling and after 12 overs Canterbury were 2 for 28. Julian came on as first change bowler and bowled an amazing spell of fast paced swing bowling to take 4 for 11 off 6 overs that tore the heart out of the middle order. He was then rewarded with a second spell in which he took another wicket to finish with 5 for 12 off 8 overs.

The Summary

The team finished with three wins and two losses in their first winning season and have a lot to be proud of. For some, it was also their time playing on turf pitches which is a completely different experience to synthetic. With the bat the top order performed well with all five averaging over 20 for the season and four of the five scoring half centuries. It is this consistent batting that allows for being totals to be scored whether setting or defending.

Our bowlers did an excellent job with the heart of the attack bowling with an economy rate less than 2.6 and at an average of 17.07. It is this combined pressure from keeping the scoring rate down and taking regular wickets that will win matches.

The team should look forward to next season and the opportunity to improve yet again.

Anthony Adlam – Captain (Dundas United) Lachlan Carfax – VC (Dundas United)

Jack Brewer (Oakhill College) Jeffrey Burt (St Patricks College)

Nick Ford (Ryde Hunters Hill) Tim Hatton (St Patricks College)

Tim De La Hoyde (Oakhill College) Jackson Laurie (Oakhill College)

Max Laurie (Oakhill College) Tarun Mahajan (Epping District)

Jack Parkinson (Epping District) James Robertson (Dundas United)

Navjot Singh (Epping YMCA) Joshua Stern (Epping District)

Game 1. V. Hawkesbury at Hawkesbury

Our first game was at Woodlands Park against the Hawkesbury team who we had played in a trial a week earlier. We won the toss and batted but were in trouble early at 3-11. Anthony Adlam and Nick Ford joined together for a match winning partnership and added 121 with Anthony finishing 91 not out and Nick 71. Our final score was 8-210. The bowlers put pressure on Hawkesbury from the start and restricted them to 8-141. Anthony finished with 3-15 from 10 overs and Lachlan Carfax 1-19 from 10 overs. A good win first up.

Game 2. V.Parramatta at Cox Park

Anthony won the toss and batted. Tim de La Hoyde opened and made a solid 39 well supported by James Robertson with an excellent 37. Anthony Adlam came in after the break and made 62 not out to get us to 5- 162. A good score on our home ground.

Tarun Mahajan and Navjot Singh bowled tightly from the start, followed up by a great spell from Jeff Burt who finished with 3-18 from 10 overs. Tim Hatton sent the stumps flying for his first rep wicket. Two run outs including a direct hit from the outfield by Tarun helped us to bowl Parramatta out for 119. This was the first time we had beaten Parramatta during a reps season.

Game 3. V. Georges River/St George at Olds Park

A convincing win gave us three in a row. Batting first, James Robertson looked good early making 19 before Anthony Adlam and Nick Ford came together in a dominating partnership and added 170, Anthony 83 and Nick 80. Final score 6-224

Some great bowling and fielding followed with Tarun Mahajan taking 2-14, Navjot Singh 1-3 off 5 overs and Jeff Burt 2-16 off 9 overs. Jack Parkinson was dynamic in the field and followed up his trademark side on direct hit run out with 5 excellent overs and figures of 3-10. Georges River/St George all out 75. It was a win to really get people’s attention.

Game 4. V. Blacktown at Blacktown

Anthony lost the toss and after a good start by Navjot Singh with the ball we were umpired out of the game. The Remembrance Day minute of silence was poorly handled by the officials and the standard was set. NDs were unbelievably penalized 5 overs and the farce continued. Nick Ford tried hard and made a patient 25 while Jack Parkinson provided some late highlights and brought the crowd alive with a gutsy 28 not out at the end. 39

Game 5. V. Canterbury & Western Suburbs at Cox Park

The last round we needed a win to make the finals. Canterbury /Wests won the toss and sent us in. James Robertson played a great knock of 47 against some quality bowling and Nick Ford attacked from the start for a very aggressive 62. These two helped us to 5-140 however we were only able to score 17 runs off the last 10 overs and finished 8-157.

Lachlan Carfax took a wicket first ball and after 20 overs we had CWS 2-41. The game should have been won from there but missed catches and lack of control with the ball allowed Canterbury/Wests to pass our score 5 down. Jack Parkinson was leading wicket taker with 2-23. Their coach then paid us a huge compliment by sending us back in with 18 minutes of play remaining. To his eternal credit he felt that he could bowl us out for zero in 8 minutes.

As a result we finished the season 2nd in our group with 3 wins and 2 losses. Anthony Adlam and Nick Ford both finished with 241 runs, James Robertson compiled 127 runs and Jeff Burt was our leading wicket taker with 8 wickets at 15.00.

I would like to thank Noel Ford for all his work as Manager of this side and Trevor Robertson for his work as assistant coach. It is always a challenge having your son in a rep team and fulfilling managerial and coaching roles as well, and both Noel and Trevor are to be congratulated for their efforts. I would also like to thank all the parents for their positive input throughout the season. There was full attendance at every training session for the full 7 week rep season which is a huge credit to both the boys and their parents. We now look forward to next season on turf.

UNDER 13 – WS GEE SHIELD

This seasons U13s Gee Shield team was represented by Baxter Holt (c), Harrison Kilby, Jayden Brown & James Hirsch from Dundas United, Elliot Carwardine & Brayden Dilley from Epping District, Jamie McLeod, Michael Gordon, Luke Kayani & Pakajan Narendiran from Concord Briars, Ben Smith from North Ryde & Cullen Hathurusinghe from Epping YMCA. The coach was Phil McLeod and the manager was Paul Kilby.

This was an important season for this group. After 2 seasons without a victory it was time to turn the tables. After some intense pre-season training and 2 hard fought practice games against Parramatta and Hawkesbury, there was a feeling that the team was ready to start competing hard in competition conditions. We had 3 home games in the competition on a ground that certainly favoured local knowledge and where run scoring was difficult.

Game 1 v Penrith

The first game, being at home, was certainly a game we expected to be able to win. We won the toss and sent Penrith in, knowing that the any score above 130 would be difficult to chase. Jayden (8 overs 2-5) and Elliot (7 overs 1-13) kept things really tight and Harrison (7 overs 4-12) tossed the ball up and invited the batsmen to hit over the top which they attempted to do and failed. Great fielding –especially the catching including a stunning catch at short cover by Luke – saw Penrith all out for 110 and meant we had a huge chance to secure that elusive first victory. We were getting confident at 2-50 after a solid 35 run partnership between Cullen and Jamie. However at 6-77 the game was in the balance again until Jayden and Harrison smashed a few loose balls to the boundary and we won by 3 wickets. The release of emotion was striking especially amongst the long suffering parents. This was new territory for the players at rep level and was a just reward after a lot of hard work at training.

Game 2 v ACT

With a victory in the bag, the team was looking forward to the Canberra road trip knowing that a second win would open up a real opportunity. On a bright sunny day and a fast outfield, we won the toss and sent them into bat, hoping to chase down another total, hopefully less than 200. Before the first drinks break the horse had bolted and ACT were 1-120 with our bowlers offering too many boundary balls and the classy ACT batsmen taking full advantage. At that stage we were staring at 300, however Baxter grabbed the ball and snaffled a couple of wickets and run-outs to drag us back into the game while Ben pinched 3 wickets in the final slog fest. A target of 249 looked mountainous however a quick start saw our first 50 in 8 overs (Brayden 24) and then Jamie (63) and Baxter (51) in a very classy partnership of 84 gave us some hope. However the run rate continued to rise and despite some brave slogging from the lower order we fell 42 runs short. Nevertheless we did pass 200 for the first time and there were a lot of positives in the game. ACT went on to make the semi-finals so this competitive match was actually another huge step forward for the team and made the 3 hour return trip to Sydney tolerable.

Game 3 v Bankstown

This was a match that would determine our hopes for progressing past the round robin games. Bankstown had beaten us the year before in a low scoring game and we wanted to turn the tables on our home ground. Bankstown won the toss and batted and we needed to keep them to around 130. However dropped catches and poor bowling permitted their top order to steadily accumulate and at 1-130 we weren’t in a great position. Jayden (10 overs 1-20), Ben (8 overs 3-18) and Pakajan (5 overs for 12 runs) managed to drag us back into the game with some tight bowling and the innings closed at 6-179. The target of 180 was difficult but not impossible. However tidy bowling from Bankstown and some poor shots by our top order meant we were never really in the chase. Despite some solid batting from Baxter (64), 126 at the end was way short of the mark. One win from 3 games meant we dropped out of the semi-finals race and was quite disappointing after the very good cricket in the first 2 games.

41

Game 4 v Hawkesbury

After the disappointment of the Bankstown game the team was ready to get stuck into Hawkesbury who had also beaten us the year before. Hawkesbury won the toss and batted. This time our bowlers did turn it on and bowled very tidily indeed, restricting Hawkesbury to a very modest 8/102 off 50 overs. The pick of the bowlers were Cullen (8 overs 3-7) and Jayden (10 overs 1-12). The target of 103 looked fairly straight forward and a spritely 18 by James (elevated to no.3) and another major partnership between Jamie (15) and Baxter (39no) meant we cruised home in 38 overs to secure our second victory amidst more rapturous celebrations.

Game 5 v Illawarra

Our final game and our second away match saw us travel down to Wollongong for a match the opposition needed to win to get into the finals. This was going to be a great litmus test for how far we had progressed during the season. We lost the toss again but this time were invited to bat first. Our target was 170 on a ground that looked fast. Brayden (23) and James (26) got us off to a solid start but a few quick wickets meant we lost momentum. Baxter (44) and Jayden (31) then revved it up again and at 4-130 with 10 overs to go we had a chance to get near the target however tidy bowling from Illawarra hindered our progress and it took a few lusty blows from Harrison (13) to get us to 158, a very competitive score in a howling gale. Their run chase began well and at 1-80 we were looking down the barrel. Ben, Baxter and Elliot each took an important wicket and the game was in the balance. We then turned to the leggie Michael to finally bamboozle them and with 10 overs 1-35 he stifled any late charge together with tight bowling from the medium pacers and some fantastic ground fielding. Victory in such dramatic circumstances and against a quality team was proof that we had finally emerged as a team capable of beating anyone.

Conclusion

This was an extraordinary season for the team. 3 wins from 5 games was well beyond initial expectations and was a massive turnaround from previous seasons. There is now a belief that we can bowl out any team and the batters can put together consistent scores. With continued evolution in the next 12 months this team can become a very strong unit and is capable of going even further into the competition.

3 players deserve special mention: Baxter for captaining the team well, taking some important wickets but most importantly providing a steady stream of runs in the middle order. Jayden also had a fantastic season, bowling economically every game and contributing very valuable runs at no 6. Elliot also lifted the team through his enthusiasm in the field and consistently tying up the opposition with subtle movement off the seam in his lively bowling. However every player deserves praise as this was a great team effort where every player played contributed in specific roles. This started with consistent effort at the weekly training sessions and was highlighted in those tight moments of the close games where, more often than not, players lifted to achieve the desired outcome.

Next season is a very exciting prospect.

UNDER 12 – CAWSEY SHIELD

Hi All,

My name is Terry Rogers, the under 12 NDJCA representative coach. Early in March 2012 we had two selection trials with 28 players trying out in week one and 26 in week two. From these boys we picked a winter development squad of 15 players. We trained at Silverwater Indoor centre once a month and held a final selection in July and August where we picked 12 players. We participated in 3 trial games against Inner West Harbour, Parramatta and Hawkesbury with the boys trailing very well, winning two games and coming a very close 2nd in the other!!!!!!!!!!!

The draw was kind to us and we played Canterbury in our first game where we had them all out for 92 runs after 34 over’s. We got the runs before afternoon tea with 2 down, both run outs!! Naba was on 25 and Henry on 50 not out. David Howard took three run outs and Ryan Federow two wickets. Robert Smith took one of the best outfield catches I have seen in junior cricket.

Our second game was against Hawkesbury where we bowled them out for 120 after 38 overs. We had them at 5 for 60 at morning tea! Naba and David opened the batting Naba retiring hurt and David not out 38 runs. Harry Manenti got 61 very handy runs, Charlie Cale three catches and Henry Kirk two wickets. This game also saw Jack Bickersteth getting his first rep wicket. Two wins from two games- what a great start for us.

Our next game was against St George - last year’s champs we knew this was going to be a challenge. We were all out for 76 runs and failed to complete our overs. On a brighter note it took them 38 over’s and we got 4 of them out before they reached our total.

In our game against Illawarra we bowled first and had them 5 out for 89. Wickets were shared around with Ryan on 1 for 6 off 8 overs - 6 were maidens! We started our innings chasing 130 runs with David opening and achieving 18 runs, Charlie top scored with 37 runs with Robert Smith coming in at number 8 with 13 runs. Overall all top order was too slow and we were all out in the 49th over with 117 runs.

Our final game was against Parramatta where we batted first; this was the game we needed to win. We had a very slow start losing David early for 6 runs and Naba taking 2 hours to get 27 runs, this put a lot of pressure on the rest of the team to score runs. Charlie took 29 runs with Jack coming in at number 10 and hitting two 4’s in a row to give us a fighting chance. Unfortunately after 50 over’s we were 9 down for 139 runs - 19 runs short of Parramatta’s final total of 158 runs!

Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the finals but the two wins and 2 close games were a huge improvement on our previous seasons.

From a coach’s point of view we had a very good season, unfortunately we didn’t make it to the finals but the two wins and two close games were a huge improvement on our previous seasons.

With promise of an even more successful season next summer.

Cheers and beers.

Terry Rogers.

UNDER 11 – CREAK SHIELD

Round One Penrith At The Kingsway

Being most of the players first year in rep cricket they were excited and a little bit intimidated. Already in the trial games they had faced some very sharp bowling and most of the team was now sporting rib cage protection as a result! The toss was won by Penrith and they decided to bat. The ND U11’s put themselves in a good position by keeping the home side to 129 runs. Some great individual fielding efforts including two awesome catches from Hayden Carney, two catches to Jethro Thornton, and 3 wickets to Kabil Dhillon and Naman Ganjekar. Unfortunately after a great start and needing only 19 runs off 20 overs there was a collapse of wickets and the game ended in a tie. Run scorers were Dominic Micallef 30, Matthew Henning 25, Jarrod Hocking 19. Man of the Match Hayden Carney

Round Two Manly At Dundas (Curtis)

The toss was won by Manly and after lasts week efforts the team knew they could win a game. Some sharp bowling and good fielding saw Manly struggle to make runs and at times were bogged down grinding it out. Manly went on to see out their 50 overs with a score of 6/141. Billy McCarthy taking 3 wickets, Oliver Williams 1 and two brilliant runouts due to the pressure built by the opening bowlers Jethro Thornton and Kartik Kheatarpaul. 141 was a target that was within reach. With the collapse of last week still playing on the players minds a too conservative approach was taken and even though the 50 overs were seen out a score of 7/85 was reached and a loss was the result. Run makers were Jack Barry 40, Hayden Carney 19, Jethro Thornton 5. One catch to Dominic Micallef. Man of the Match Jack Barry

Round Three Bankstown At Playford Park

Our great run of loosing tosses saw Bankstown win and choose to bat. We were off to a good start holding their batsmen down and taking some earlier wickets before the sprinklers decided to drench the ground. With the ball running trough the water looking like soap and the umpires nearly getting wet when standing at square leg the game was called off until the watering issues could be resolved. The conspiracy theorists amongst the visitors thought the water a deliberate ploy if the home side would be looking in trouble, on they come. Play resumed as the sprinklers had mostly stopped but the water was still pooling like a lake with the umpires refusing to allow us to change the ball. Many dropped catches and wild beam balls later Bankstown put on 7/295. 3 Wickets to Oliver Williams, 2 for Kartik Khetarpaul, 1 for Jack Barry. One catch each to Jack Barry, Oliver Williams and Billy McCarthy. Two Catches to Alexander Hudson. In reply the target was just too big for our batsmen and when our lads started to hit their pacemen a slew of donkey drop bowlers followed for the remainder of the game. We struggled to hit these loopy balls and managed only 102. Runmakers Kartik Khetarpaul 16, Senara Perera 12, Kabil Dhillon 10. Man of the Match Oliver Williams.

Round Four Inner West Harbour At Monash Park

We finally win a toss and elected to bat. After the large total that was hit against us last week it seemed as though over night the team had developed into a bunch of big hitters with everyone going out swinging. Unfortunately not a lot of runs were hit with the first innings resulting in a loss with ND’s scoring 10/62 vs 4/70 declared, and the second innings 10/55 with the visitors reaching the total only 2 wickets down. First Innings wickets Kartik Kheterpaul 2, Dominic Micallef 1, Jarrod Hocking 1, one catch to Kartik Kheterpaul. Runs to Matthew Henning 15, Dominic Micallef 7. Second Innings Hayden Carney 2 wickets, Matthew Henning one catch, runs to Alexander Hudson 9, Jack Barry 9, Oliver Williams 8. Man of the Match Matthew Henning, Kartik Kheterpaul.

44

Round Five South Eastern At Dundas (Curtis)

The toss was won by the visitors and we were put into bat. A somewhat more conservative approach ensued after the hit out last round but a balance between playing out an innings and attacking the ball was difficult to find. ND’s managed 10/55 off 30 overs which was never going to be enough against a though side like South Eastern who hit 1/82 off 16 in reply. The visitors had all the shots and played well beyond their years. Our lads were admiring just how good the South Eastern lads looked when playing their shots to the boundary and aspired to put in a gutsier effort second innings which saw ND’s get 10/93 off 36 overs, a good improvement. The last chase of the day was somewhat contentious with the visitors needing 67 runs with light fading and the allotted overs for the last hours play having been used up already, the umpires made an executive decision that a result could be had and time was added. Our lads hung in there as best they could throwing everything at the visitors who reached their target in the final over of the day with 3 balls to go. It was an exciting finish with the ND lads and the visitors enjoying the battle. First Innings wickets Hayden Carney 1, runs to Jethro Thornton 14, Kartik Khetarpaul 8. Second Innings wickets Jethro Thornton 1, Matthew Henning 1, Kartik Kheterpaul 1, runs to Hayden Carney 22, Jethro Thornton 19, Matthew Henning 17. Man of the Match Jethro Thornton, Hayden Carney.

All of the ND players in the U11 creak shield displayed great sportsmanship and a never give up attitude throughout the year. Of note is that all players were rotated in their batting positions throughout the competition meaning everyone got a start at opener, middle and lower order batting. Jack Barry scored his 40 when opening and he, Kartik Kheterpaul Jarod Hocking and Dominic Micallef showed great composure in all positions in the batting order, scoring their highest runs when either opening or in the top order. Bowlers received the same treatment with the pace attack each getting a chance with the new ball and every player getting a bowl as much as possible meaning the most overs any bowler got in one innings was 5. Taking that into consideration the team performed very well. Perhaps better results could have been obtained but as this is the players first year playing reps, it is only pertinent that each player be given an opportunity to show what they can do and see if rep cricket is something they want to commit to in the future. To think that in a few seasons time if this team sticks together, every player can face a new ball, hang around and see out an innings with the tail, every pace man is an opening bowler and anyone on the team has the ability to take 2-3 wickets for 10-20 runs off 4 overs. This is our aim as a team, to have a squad with the experience and ability to never give the opposition a rest and enjoy helping each other succeed. Special thanks go to the parents and scorers who helped throughout the season and everyone behind the scenes at NDCA that make this possible.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION JUNIORS

UNDER 13 REPRESENTATIVE TOURING TEAM

WESTERN NSW CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 2013

For the second year in a row Northern District has competed in the Western NSW Junior Cricket Carnival held in Orange NSW in January.

The squad for the tournament was as follows:

Baxter Holt (c) Dundas United Jayden Brown Dundas United Harrison Kilby Dundas United Jamie McLeod Concord Briars Luke Kayani Concord Briars Osman Kayani Concord Briars Michael Gordon Concord Briars Elliot Carwardine Epping District Brayden Dilley Epping District Charlie Cale Epping District Henry Kirk Epping District Ben Smith North Ryde Phil McLeod Coach Paul Kilby Manager

The tournament was played over 4 days all on turf wickets. 12 teams competed at the carnival from local rep teams Orange/Bathurst, Dubbo, Mitchell, Lachlan, Wagga Wagga as well as teams from ACT, Illawarra, Penrith, South Coast and Shoalhaven.

Plenty of cricket was played over the 4 days and it was a great experience for the team. The trip also proved to be a successful one with the boys ultimately winning the final against Penrith in a very close game.

Another highlight of the trip was a 20/20 game played under lights in which 2 of our boys played (Baxter & Jayden). Both boys did well with Jayden taking a wicket and also top scoring (27) for his team and Baxter also top scoring (20) for his team.

The boys played 3 games in our pool and won all 3 to progress to the final against Penrith. Details of our games are as follows:-

Game 1 V Orange/Bathurst at Brabham No. 2

The boys were very excited for the first game as many had not played on turf before. Baxter won the toss and we batted first. It didn’t take long for the boys to work out that the wicket was playing low and they soon got the hang of playing straight and not across the line. We scored 176 off our 50 overs. Brayden top scoring with 44 no. .Others to do well with the bat were Jayden 26, Henry 25 (retired) and Jamie 19.

Elliott took the new ball and soon had Orange/Bathurst in trouble taking 2 wickets in the first over. Jayden then chimed with another wicket at the other end in the 2nd over to have them 3 /4. Wickets continued to fall and at one stage they were 8/54. We finally dismissed Orange/Bathurst for 96. Elliott finished with figures of 4/15 which got him a mention in the local paper. Gordo took 2/7 and Jayden, Charlie, Ben & Luke all took 1 each. Our standard of fielding was also good with Baxter, Harrison and Luke all taking sharp chances.

Game 2 V Shoalhaven at Riawena Oval

Our next game against Shoalhaven was going to be a lot tougher opposition than the first game as they had a big win the day before.

Shoalhaven won the toss and batted first. Jayden took the 1st wicket in his 2nd over by finding the edge of their opener and Elliot took a blinder at 2nd slip. We soon had them 3/30 when Gordo bowled their No.3 batsman.

46

Baxter continued our good work in the field to run out their best Batsman (who had scored a century the previous day) they were in trouble at 4/54. We finally dismissed them for 119 and again our fielding was impressive to watch. Elliott ended up with 3 catches and a run out, Baxter a run out, Harrison took a sharp chance at gully and Jamie also snared one. Gordo took 2 wickets and Jayden, Elliot, Charlie, Osman, Ben and Baxter all took 1 each.

Our turn to bat and chasing a total of 120 to win against a reasonable side meant we had to bat well. We didn’t get off to a good start by losing an early wicket in the 3rd over, however Brayden (43) and Osman (36) put on a 75 run partnership for the 2nd wicket to take the game away from Shoalhaven. Jamie hit the winning runs with 6 wickets in hand.

Game 3 V ACT Gold at Brabham No. 1

Leading into this game we had won 2 from 2 as had 4 other teams across the 3 pools. If we were to make the final, we needed to win this game and also score a lot of runs and bowl ACT out to maximize our points for the match.

Luckily Baxter won the toss and decided to bat. The team got off to a great start with a century opening partnership between Charlie (74) and Luke (26). Charlie in particular batted very aggressively with many beautiful drives to boundary and together they set the team up for the huge total we needed to get into the final.

Partnerships were a key feature of our innings with Jamie (54 retired) and Baxter (20) putting on 48 for the 3rd wicket and Jamie and Harrison (18) putting on 46 for the 4th wicket. Henry chipped in with 12 runs towards to end to get our score to 236 off our 50 overs.

Elliot got us off to a great start taking the first 3 wickets to have ACT 3/11. They were soon in deep trouble when Charlie came on to bowl and took a wicket in his 1st over. ACT were then 4/15 after 10 overs and then decided they would try to play out their 50 overs and not attempt to go for the runs. ACT were finally all out for 81 in the 43rd over.

Elliot finished with 5/9 and again got his name in the local paper along with Charlie. Baxter took 2 wickets and also a catch.

Game 4 V Penrith (Final) at Wade Park

Penrith were installed as favourites for the title by the local press early in the tournament when they beat the local rep team, Mitchell. They became hot favourites in the press when Hinder (from Penrith) score 150 no against South Coast. The underdogs tag suited us just fine as we were able to fly under the radar without the added pressure Penrith must have been under.

The game was played on the No 1 oval (Wade Park) in Orange and was prepared well. It had a lot more bounce in it than the other turf wickets we had played on during the earlier games.

Penrith won the toss and chose to bat first. Their openers got them off to a solid start and after 10 overs were 0/25. Osman came on to bowl and took 2 quick wickets and Penrith were 2/30. They were soon 3/34 when Gordo took the wicket of their dangerous left hander (Weir) caught spectacularly in the outfield by Harrison diving full length. Charlie came on to bowl and took 3 quick wickets including the prize wicket of Hinder (a tricky catch taken by Ben). Penrith were 6/67 when Harrison came on to bowl and took 2 wickets in his first over to be on a hat trick. Jayden took another wicket at the other end and Penrith were 9/71. Gordo took the last wicket to have them all out for 82.

47

Our turn to bat and the boys had to face a fierce 25 minutes from the Penrith bowlers before the lunch break. Unfortunately we lost 2 wickets in that time. Luke (20) and Jamie (8) helped steady the ship with a handy 22 run partnership, however we then lost a couple of quick wickets. Another partnership between Luke and Jayden (26) of 24 runs got us closer to the target. Luke showed fantastic discipline in batting for 2 hours and provided the solid base the team needed to run down the small total. In the meantime the press and TV crew turned up and they couldn’t have had a closer final to report on. Elliot and Charlie made it on the local TV that night along with Baxter, Jayden and Luke in action on the field.

Osman came out swinging for a quick fire 8 and when he was unluckily given out LBW we were 6/64 and still need 19 to win. Jayden and Henry put on 13 valuable runs before Jayden was tragically run out. We suddenly found ourselves 8/81 and still needing 2 runs to win. Penrith then bowled a couple of maidens in a row and the pressure on both sides was mounting. The winning runs were eventually taken when the boys scampered through for a leg bye.

All the boys raced onto the field with excitement and there was a huge relief on the sidelines from the parents. The boys were now the U13’s Western NSW Carnival winners!.

At the presentation Elliot received a trophy for taking the most wickets over the tournament. The Umpire also said it was the best final he had umpired over the last 17 years at the carnival.

The carnival was extremely well run by ODJCA and we would recommend that each season our under 13’s and 15’s attend the carnival.

We would also like to thank the boys and parents for making the trip to Orange and hope the experience and memories from the trip last a life time.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES ASSOCIATION President’s Report

On behalf of my other regular umpiring members, I present the Annual Report for the Season 2012 - 2013.

This season was not again a good time for two umpires namely me (Bob Flint) and John Boyles. I was still recovering from earlier major surgery to my right knee and this put me out for the season. I was hoping to resume umpiring late in the season via the Thursday school cricket. English Umpire John Boyles was still recovering from earlier back surgery and other complications set in. He was advised by his Doctor not to travel to Australia so he stayed home and umpired in the English summer which had very bad weather. So John was looking to return to Australia this coming summer season and hoping for much warmer weather. So again we were down to John Crane and Peter Tate with John Vanderlight putting his hand up after the start of the season.

The Association Secretary endeavoured to ensure that all grades received a fair share of “official” umpires by a system of rotation through the grades. Given however, that on each Saturday throughout the season, NDCA conducted some fifteen matches, it goes without saying that there is an urgent need for additional qualified umpires. In this regard, I would again appeal to all those more seasoned players who are considering “hanging up their boots” to stay involved in the game that they love by becoming an umpire. The Juniors again ran the Umpires Examinations with the NSWCU&SA during the season and we extend our congratulations. This goes well with the Juniors in developing official umpires among their ranks and the chance to umpire in the Senior ranks for experience. We tapped into these Junior Umpires and thanks to Homer Paxton we were able to secure some of these umpires for the Senior games as well as the Semis and Finals.

As well as the number of club matches, our members this year were again involved in the Inter District Representative matches which were held on Sundays in October and November. The matches were the Junior games in the Creak U11, Cawsey U12, Gee U13, Moore U14, Weblin U15 and Watson U16 Shields, with no Senior Representative teams. We convey our thanks to the following Umpires John Crane, Kieran Gray, Greg Berriman, John Craig, Homer Paxton, Ron Vidler, Brian Wiseman, Nirmal De Silva, John Vanderlight, Craig Hoskin, Christian Kennedy and Jude Fonsekas. We also like to thank the Umpires from Hawkesbury, Manly, Bankstown and Illawarra who assisted us at their home grounds.

My thanks go to our officiating umpires during the season. We were able to cover 8 of the ten Semi-Finals with one umpire and all 5 Finals with two umpires at each Final. Thanks to John Vanderlight, Ajit Madan, Homer Paxton, Ron Vidler, Ian Sinden, Brian Wiseman, Peter Tate, Nirmal De Silva, Peter Honeywood and Craig Menzies.

Congratulations to all those who enjoyed success during the season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2013 – 2014 with the hope that the qualified Junior Umpires will continue to get experience whilst with umpiring in the Senior competitions.

Bob Flint, President

CRICKET ASSOCIATION

These are the teams who have, according to the Association’s records, played in the competitions during the NDCA’s 101 years of existence. Many of these clubs have vanished into the mists of time, some merged with other clubs, old ones went, new ones joined and many who were there at the beginning are still there and they helped form the nucleus of what very quickly became a strong and successful Association
