As the Championship goes from strength to strength it continues to very much be a part of the fabric of sporting life in Surrey. The sponsorship complements our backing of the Ryman Football League. These two partnerships work together seamlessly to provide Ryman with brand awareness - and indeed business - in an important area of the country across all four seasons of the year. Or should I say across the two seasons of the year for those of us who divide our calendar into the football season and the cricket season rather than the weather! Speaking of the weather it was a great shame the gods conspired against Wimbledon Cricket Club to prevent any play during last season’s National Twenty20 Finals Day. However congratulations to our near neighbours who secured victory via an indoor ‘bowl out’ in front of the Sky Sports cameras. It is a magnificent advert for the Ryman Surrey Championship that we are the home of the national champions. This leaves me to say that, as the covers come off for this new season, I wish all clubs the very best of luck for the year ahead and hope you all have a great summer. For all stationery and business supplies please visit one of Ryman’s 236 stores nationwide or go online at www.ryman.co.uk 2 Section 1 – Important Information CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Crispin Lyden-Cowan. Chairman of The Surrey Championship. We enter the 2014 season, mopping up from the winter storms, floods, gales and biblical torrents that were deluged upon us. We all feel for the clubs that have suffered unduly, and seemingly unfairly and it is our hope that each of these clubs can recover, to play great cricket this season. Your local communities, sponsors and members have, in many instances rallied around. And so have Surrey, and the ECB. We have, on the Championship Executive also provided much needed funds to help clubs get back on their feet, and will continue to support you all in the most practical ways possible. My personal thanks go to everyone who has rallied around and supported our sport over these taxing few months. During this summer, I will be asking our cricket committee to conduct some consultations with each of the leagues in our Championship, via Captains’ meetings, hopefully on match days at The Oval. We feel this will be the best way of eliciting the views and thoughts of our playing community, so that we can jointly agree the most sensible format of rules for future seasons. I am keen that we reduce the burden of our complex and especially long set of rules, but only with our players and clubs contributing to that ideal. I will urge all captains to attend their respective captains meetings so that the debates and discussions can be as fully informed and representative as possible. I would like to pass on my thanks to Virginia Edwards for her tireless work as Secretary. She has been our stalwart – nothing has been too much trouble for her. Virginia remains with us as Registration Secretary. I would like also to pass on my thanks to John Smith (Dulwich) for his help on the Executive, and Chris Bullen for his help on the Executive and Grounds Committee. From henceforth we will be using Mark Babb as our administrator. All inquiries and correspondence should, in the first instance go to him. Without our umpires, so well organised by our Umpires committee, we would not have the quality of cricket that we enjoy. Long may that continue and a special thanks go to them. I am pleased that Ryman have agreed to remain our sponsors and our gratitude goes to Theo and his team. Congratulations to Wimbledon CC – the first ever club to win the National T20 title twice, on the back of winning the ECB Premier 1st XI title three times back-to-back. And my congratulations to all winners in 2013. I hope the 2014 season is successful for everyone both on the field and recovering from our worst winter ever. 3 Section 1 – Important Information 4 Section 1 – Important Information EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2014 President: Roland Walton Umpires Panel Member: Michael Lowe West Wing, The Red House, Jeremy Beckwith 23 Oak Grove, Sunbury Lower Road, Effingham, 75 Grove Road on Thames Surrey KT24 5JP Sutton, Surrey SM1 2DB Middlesex TW16 5BN (H) 01372 454979 (H) 020 8643 2090 (H) 01932 780800 (M) 07836 293171 (M) 07771 762452 (M) 07710 278344 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Chairman: Crispin Lyden-Cowan Other Elected Members: Helen Ross 6 Lion Gate Mews, John Bramhall 32 Nightingale Road London SW18 5EN 37 West Street, Reigate, RH2 9BL Godalming (H) 020 8812 3938 (H) 01737 221813 Surrey (M) 07768 036979 (M) 07798 687328 GU7 3AG [email protected] (F) 020 7936 2020 (H) 01483 426822 Secretary: Brian Driscoll [email protected] (M) 07515 343228 358 Chipstead Valley Road, Chris Evans [email protected] Coulsdon, Surrey CR5 3BS 33 Sayes Court, Addlestone, Co-opted: (H) 01737 551596 Surrey, KT15 1NA Mark Babb (M) 07841 385818 (H) 01932 848473 c/o Surrey County Cricket Centre [email protected] (M) 07801 715905 George Abbot School Treasurer: Peter Murphy [email protected] Woodruff Avenue 38 Rosehill Avenue, Horsell Graham Jackson Guildford, GU1 1XX. • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

  • Kearsey, Francis
Private Francis Kearsey (elsewhere found as Kersey and Kiersey) (Regimental Number 3265), having no known last resting-place, is commemorated on the bronze beneath the Caribou in the Newfoundland Memorial Park at Beaumont-Hamel. His occupation prior to military service recorded as that of a fireman* earning a monthly sixty dollars, Francis Kearsey was a volunteer of the Twelfth Recruitment Draft. *Possibly not the person who extinguishes fires but he who keeps them lit in steam engines since he is documented as having worked for A. Harvey & Co. and sailing on the SS Bonaventure to Russia (where she was eventually sold) just prior to his enlistment. He presented himself for medical examination on November 20 of 1916 at the Church Lads Brigade Armoury* in St. John’s, capital city of the Dominion of Newfoundland. It was a procedure which was to pronounce him as…Fit for Foreign Service. *The building was to serve as the Regimental Headquarters in Newfoundland for the duration of the conflict. It was to be on the day of that medical assessment, November 20, and at the same venue, that Francis Kearsey would enlist. He was thus engaged…for the duration of the war*…at the daily private soldier’s rate of a single dollar to which was to be appended a ten-cent per diem Field Allowance. *At the outset of the War, perhaps because it was felt by the authorities that it would be a conflict of short duration, the recruits enlisted for only a single year. As the War progressed, however, this was obviously going to cause problems and the men were encouraged to re-enlist.

  • Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller Starts to Look at the Most Controversial Form of Dismissal
Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller starts to look at the most controversial form of dismissal Of the 40 wickets that fell in the match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan at Cheltenham that ended on 1st August 2010 as many as 18 of the victims were dismissed lbw. Was this, I wondered, a possible world record? Asking Philip Bailey to interrogate the files of Cricket Archive, I discovered that it was not: back in 1953/54 a match between Patiala and Delhi had seen 19 batsmen lose their wickets in this way. However, until the start of the 2010 season the record in English first-class cricket had stood at 17, but, barely credibly, Cheltenham had provided the third instance of a match with 18 lbws in the course of the summer. Gloucestershire had already been involved in one of these, against Sussex at Bristol, while the third occasion was the Sussex-Middlesex match at Hove. Was this startling statistic for 2010 an indication that leg before decisions are more freely given nowadays? It seemed to correlate with an impression that modern technology has given umpires a better feel for when a ball is likely to hit the wicket and that the days when batsmen could push forward and feel safe were now over. I determined to dig deeper and examine trends over time. This article confines itself to matches played in the County Championship since World War I. I propose looking at Tests in a future issue. The table below shows how the incidence of lbw dismissals has fluctuated over time.

  • Make the Game Safer Or Parents Won't Let Their Children Play It
10 | SPORT | RUGBY S1 Sunday Independent 6 March 2016 Always check the background The 70 so-called experts lack the qualifications or experience to dictate to us about rugby injuries NEIL FRANCIS HIS one is about failure in the media, more specifically failure to question. I read the financial press every day. On a regular basis TI come across articles where I am told that some Gordon Gekko-type hedge fund principal or financier tells us he is really worried and he thinks sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. The explanations as to why this will happen are somewhat plausible but please . no panic. There is no byline, no author, and no references — nothing under the piece to suggest any attribution. We have no idea where it came from or who penned it. It just appeared. There is nothing to substantiate it or no counter-argument or editorial to challenge it. So we read it and repeat it to our mates. I see Gordon Gekko says sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. It then becomes a fact. What is indisputable is that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The boys have all short positions in place and when the forest fire starts, they collect. A month later we are all blown away. That fella Gordon Gekko is a bloody genius. Put something out there in the newspaper and if nobody checks or challenges it, well then it is a fact. Wednesday evening came slowly and my editor calls.
