Excellent numbers forward on Friday and even with a larger entry on offer demand still looked to outstripped supply. Store steers rose to a decent top of £1185 given for a strong South Devon bullock (32m) from Rob Hawkins of Awliscombe closely followed by a pair of smart South Devon’s (24m) at £1160 for Alan Luscombe, whilst Beef Shorthorn and Limousin steers of the same age also reached £1160 for John Pollard, St Merryn and Ken Harris, Lee Mill respectively. British Blue steers (31m) to £1125 for Charles & Ann Down of Abbotskerswell whilst best Aberdeen Angus bullocks (24m) came from Susan Arthurs of Withleigh and made £1095 and an eye catching pen of five Salers (25m) from John Hull, Tiverton drew £1070 apiece. Smart looking Holstein Friesian’s (22m) from Robin Milton down from saw £855 a head for a pair. A remarkable Charolais yearling bullock from Sandy & James Harvey, Holbeton fetched a very creditable £1120 with other top quality spring 2018 born youngsters including a smashing Limousin steer at £1050 for JA & CJ Martin of Lewdown and a bunch of four cracking South Devon steers (11m) a £930 apiece for David Heath of Sherford. Store heifers peaked at a fair £1050 for a couple of well covered South Devon’s from Roger Williams up from Penryn with Charolais females (24m) not far behind at £1030 for Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn who also sold British Blue‘s (24m) for £1005. Limousin bred heifers (23m) fetched £990 for Brian Vallance, Bickington with older (30m) sorts of the same breed to £970 for Rob Hawkins. Best of the later born heifers came from Paul Brimacombe and family, Yeoford with a striking British Blue (just 13m) which sold well at £890.

273 STIRKS & SUCKLED CALVES – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935

A much better entry of stirks and suckled calves met a cracking trade throughout. Andrew Lawrence of Helston present a strong run of Limousin cross cattle with the best of the steers attaining £780 (11m), whilst others off the same good farm achieved £765, £760 and £755. Roger Williams of Penryn attained £755 for Aberdeen Angus steers (12m), FG Palmers & Son of Blue Post realised £745 again for Angus steers (12m), Chris and Katie Stephens of Bickington achieved £730 for Limousin steers (12m). South Devon steers from Miles and Helen Partridge of Poundsgate attained £715. Further Angus steers from Graham Heard, Broadclyst hit £710 (10m), Hatherley & Rendle of hit £700 for Limousin steers (7m), British Blue’s from Paul Brimacombe & family, Yeoford hit £695 whilst the best of a good run from David & Justine Colton of saw Limousin steers hit £690 (9m). Heifers topped at £650 for Andrew Lawrence showing Limousin’s with his others fetching £645 whilst Roger Williams attained £640 for Aberdeen Angus females. Limousin heifers from David & Justine Colton reached £635, Chris and Katie Stephens realised £610 for South Devon heifers (12m), whilst British Blue heifers from Paul Brimacombe & family achieved £600. 74 ORPHAN LAMBS

74 orphans were a level trade with just about enough interest for all forward, these peaked at £26 (x2) for stronger end types from JA Slee of whilst Will Hunt of Honiton made £25 & £21 and Parsonage Farms of made £22 of their best pair. Plenty of others £14 to £18 and they averaged £12 overall.

472 STORE HOGGS

A shorter entry of mainly tail end hoggs saw another lift in trade reaching £99.50 for Zwartbles from Adcock & Wotton of . More forward sorts at £99 & £96 for Keith Vincent of Truro, £97.50, £96.50 & £95.50 for Michael & Janet Folland of Roborough and £97 for all John & Jean Blackler of Harbertonford, PA & AC Carr of Cheriton Fitzpaine and Phillip Rogers of Noss Mayo. Several further pens selling between £86 and £96 with some of the better bred medium hoggs trading into the £80’s and smaller, plainer and hill bred sorts looking well sold and often £60’s and £70’s. Average of £74.

43 GRAZING & BREEDING EWES & RAMS

Grazers to £88 for a Texel ram from Jonathan Musgrave of who also had a ewe at £68 and ewes topped at £71.50 for Jack Wonnacott of .

360 EWES & 552 LAMBS (912 LIVES)

A massive entry of 360 ewes with their 552 lambsBREEDING were dearer EWES again &with RAMS yet again more farmers forward looking for couples and willing to give a premium for genuine flock aged outfits. Best doubles to £220 for strength from Nick Burrington of Exeter, £202 (x2) for both Suffolk x and Continental cross doubles from Phillip Arscott of Honiton and £195 for Suffolk cross one crop ewes from Winston Thorne of Umberleigh. Other top prices include Suffolk doubles at £190 for Ian Vigus of Oakford, a Charollais cross triplet at £190 again for Phillip Arscott and £188 for the best double from David Brewer of Wadebridge. Sue Veysey of Cullompton sold flock aged doubles at £187 & £182, Winston Thorne’s Texel one croppers achieved £184 and Gareth Clements of Launceston claimed £182 for his best. Some smart pens of doubles and singles mixed looked well sold and warmly received often into the £160’s and £170’s and over £60 per life. Straight singles at £140 & £139 for Winston Thorne with one crop ewes, being Texel x and Suffolk cross respectively, and £140 also for young sheep from John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford. Second quality £45 to £55 per life whilst third quality pretty much all upwards of £35/life.

Another fantastic entry of pigs saw all age sections in the pig market sell to a much improved trade!

87 CULL SOWS

A splendid line-up of sows with vendors stretching over three counties. Top call of the day was £120 (x2) given for heavy sows in from Messrs Twigg & Selley of with the pick of a first class consignment from Chris Down hitting £119, £115 & £114. Plenty of decent sows between £95-£110 with the top ten averaging £112.50 and an overall average of £93.30 for the entry of eighty-seven.

91 PRIME & STORE PIGS

An encouraging crowd of six buyers today saw the trade lift £10 -£15 per head compared to our last sale. Top call of the day was £142 for a fantastic prime pig in from Mr G Bridgman, Saltash which sold to John May of . The same good home saw others at £118 whilst Colin Gibbins of Feniton sold his best bunch of six at £115 with Rich Gibbins & family reaching £112 for two pens of 90kg pigs going off to Messrs Nicholas of Coombe Martin. Rob & Richard Ovenall of Torrington saw their first two pens of medium weight prime pigs reach £107 (x9) with the top twenty prime pigs averaging £120.30. A tidy entry of store pigs saw quality young stores from Martin Hodges of Honiton hit £61 (x3), £46 (x5) and £39 (x4). Young weaners from Will Knowles reached £35 going off to Plymouth with young coloured stores at £30 for Messrs Kirst of .

Speaking after the sale, James Morrish of Kivells said “It looks like the pig trade has at last started to improve. New buyers were present today so please keep in touch if you have pigs to sell.”
