Life in the ghetto of Lodz Life in the ghetto of Lodz A ”special area” for Jews Three weeks after the invasion of Poland Reinhard Heydrich, leader of the security service in Nazi Germany, instructed the so called Einsatzgruppen that the Jews should be concentrated in special areas Vashem© Yad and that this was neccesary in order to accomplish the “final goal”, i.e. to get rid of all the Jews. Therefore Artur Greiser and Friedrich Uebelhoer, Nazi leaders for Wartheland, where Jakob was born, acted according to this intent when they started planning for a special living area for Jews in Lodz. The planning of the ghetto started in December 1939. The authorities sent a message to the Jewish Community instructing them on how the resettlement should be carried out. The assigned area included the Old City, where many Jews already lived, and part of the district Baluty in the outskirts of the city, representing a total area of 4.13 square kilometers. Both areas were poor and run-down. Most of the houses Arthur Greiser, leader of the Wartheland region. did not have running water or sewage. To isolate the area and keep the non-Jewish population out large signs were posted at the entrances, warning people of epidemics and illnesses in the Jewish settlement area. -

Both monumental events reshaped Jewish history and transformed Jewish memory; thus, each in their own way required inclusion in the Jewish calendar. My focus will be on Yom Hashoah v’Hagevurah, Holocaust and Heroism Days as it is formally known in Israel where it was first established by a resolution of the Knesset. We shall return to the title shortly. Commemoration of what we now call the Shoah, the Holocaust, but what was then called by the Jews who experienced it “the Churban,” began even during the war and most certainly took on a communal character immediately after the war ended in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps of Europe as the remnant that survived, the Shearit Hapleitah used even their first months of freedom to begin coming to terms with what had happened. Though it was clear at that point that the Churban would be commemorated, it was unclear when and according to whose calendar. That is to say, should the commemoration be observed in secular time or Jewish sacred time? The massacre of European Jewry was something that happened day by day for three years and ten months. -

July 2008 Patterns of Cooperation, Collaboration and Betrayal: Jews, Germans and Poles in Occupied Poland during World War II1 Mark Paul Collaboration with the Germans in occupied Poland is a topic that has not been adequately explored by historians.2 Holocaust literature has dwelled almost exclusively on the conduct of Poles toward Jews and has often arrived at sweeping and unjustified conclusions. At the same time, with a few notable exceptions such as Isaiah Trunk3 and Raul Hilberg,4 whose findings confirmed what Hannah Arendt had written about 1 This is a much expanded work in progress which builds on a brief overview that appeared in the collective work The Story of Two Shtetls, Brańsk and Ejszyszki: An Overview of Polish-Jewish Relations in Northeastern Poland during World War II (Toronto and Chicago: The Polish Educational Foundation in North America, 1998), Part Two, 231–40. The examples cited are far from exhaustive and represent only a selection of documentary sources in the author’s possession. 2 Tadeusz Piotrowski has done some pioneering work in this area in his Poland’s Holocaust: Ethnic Strife, Collaboration with Occupying Forces, and Genocide in the Second Republic, 1918–1947 (Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland, 1998). Chapters 3 and 4 of this important study deal with Jewish and Polish collaboration respectively. Piotrowski’s methodology, which looks at the behaviour of the various nationalities inhabiting interwar Poland, rather than focusing on just one of them of the isolation, provides context that is sorely lacking in other works. Although a number of initiatives to preserve the “sung folklore” of the Nazi ghettos and camps were undertaken soon after the end of the Second World War, Kaczerginski’s magnum opus, the anthology Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs of the Ghettos and Camps), published in New York in 1948, remains unsurpassed to this day as a resource for research in the field of Jewish folk and popular music of the Holocaust period. ii Chapter one of the dissertation recounts Kaczerginski’s life story, from his underprivileged childhood in Vilna, Imperial Russia (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), to his tragic early death in Argentina. -

Numerous books and articles have been published on such topics as the Nuremberg trials, the trials in the Far East, and legal purges of war criminals and collaborators. Among these publications, however, we can barely find any works devoted to trials that took place in postwar Poland. Poland, which suffered almost six years of brutal German occupation as well as Soviet occupation of its eastern territories, became after 1945 a site of various legal proceedings aimed at punishing perpetrators and collaborators. These proceedings were conducted simultaneously with political trials of opponents of communist power. Existing literature on Polish retribution has offered only superficial analysis in the form of articles or works from the 1960s and 1970s often published by the Main Commission for the Investigation of German (since 1949 Hitlerite) War Crimes in Poland. -

Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe), 2019, 9 (3–4), 181–189 DOI:10.2478/ebce-2019-0022 On the testimony of the Holocaust in literature and ethics Stefan Konstańczak1 Abstract In the article, the author analyses the impact of the tragic experiences during the Holocaust on contemporary ethics and literature. Such considerations coincide with yet another anniversary – the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, celebrated globally as Holocaust Memorial Day. The article also considers the reasons why testimonies from Holocaust survivors have not had an adequate impact on society. The author argues that trivialisation of the Holocaust tragedy occurred in modern science and it is related to the fact that traditional ethics has not been able to convincingly explain why the Holocaust occurred in the most civilised nations. Thus, Holocaust testimonies should be constantly popularised in society for the good of all mankind. Literature seems to be the best form of mass media for this task and it is also a recorder of human emotions. According to the author, it is essential that humanity is protected this way against the possibility of a similar tragedy occurring in the future. Keywords: Holocaust, ethics, literature, Itzhak Katzenelson, Holocaust Memorial Day Introduction The Holocaust can hardly be analysed scientifically, because this greatest tragedy in the history of humanity took place in agreement with law. Paradoxically it was sanctioned by the entire machine of the German state, existing legally and widely accepted in the world. No one expected then, that a civilised state and its society could lose its humanity. In political reality based on mathematics and economy there was no room for ordinary human empathy and support for the weak which is referred to in all ethics. -
Commemoration Program
COMMEMORATION PROGRAM The author of the drawing used as the logo for the commemorations, which represents a silhouette of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the tallest building on the terrain of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto - and the bridge on Zgierska, is Abraham Koplowicz. He was born on 18 February 1930 in Łódź, the only child of Mendel and Yochet Gittel Koplowicz. Taken from the ghetto along with his parents on the last transport to Auschwitz, he perished in the gas chamber in September 1944. Eliezer Grynfeld, whose mother married after the war Mendel Koplowicz, found after the dead of his stepfather several memorabilia, including a school exercise book with a hand-drawn illustration on the cover along with the title “Litzmannstadt-Ghetto 1943” and the words: A. KOPLOWICZ “HIS OWN WORKS”. Our thanks to Mr Eliezer Grynfeld for providing the illus- tration and family photographs. Litzmannstadt Ghetto (1940-1944) In February 1940 the German chief of Łódź police issued January 1942 saw mass deportations begin from Łódź to an order that a special district for Jews was to be created the Kulmhof extermination camp (Chełmno on Ner).
