4 SUMMER OF SPACE AND COMMUNITY IMPACT DURING The Great American Solar Eclipse

his past summer, the Institute celebrated all things cosmos with the Summer of Space—two months of daily and weekend programming including live demonstrations, children’s story time, building activities, and more—all presented by Braskem. TPlus, as part of this celestial celebration, each month the Institute hosted TWO Night Skies events presented by Braskem to meet the public demand to learn even more about our universe.

The Franklin Institute was THE place to be in Philadelphia on Monday, August 21, when an estimated 10,000 people gathered to view this year’s must-see astronomical event: the Great American Solar Eclipse. Here in Philadelphia, the clouds parted long enough for some spectacular views as just under 80% of the sun was hidden by the moon. The Franklin Institute distributed more than 3,500 free solar viewers, set up 30 sun spotters, and erected four mylar tents so everyone could safely witness this wonder of the cosmos.

Representatives from The Franklin Institute fanned out across the nation to Oregon and one of the premier points of totality, St. Joseph, Missouri to provide coverage of the solar show. Thousands, even millions, watched from the Institute’s social feeds and on national television as our Chief Astronomer Derrick Pitts narrated the event from beginning to end. Pitts and a Franklin Institute Expedition Team experienced totality with tens of thousands of fellow eclipse chasers, sending back live commentary and video of this rare celestial event before, during, and after the 2 minutes and 38 seconds of totality. Though the Missouri afternoon was rainy, the clouds parted just in time to give spectators and the TFI team a brief glimpse of the sun completely covered by the moon, a sight that was met with an eruption of amazed cheers and wonder.

Bolstering science education at The Franklin Institute, outreach in the community, and the visibility of our scientists on the national stage are more important now than ever! Generous supporters and members make it all possible—thank you!

5 SUMMER OF SPACE AND COMMUNITY IMPACT DURING Braskem HELPS MAKE 3D PRINTING The Great American Solar Eclipse IN SPACE POSSIBLE

he Franklin Institute recently opened a new gallery, 3D Printing the Future, featuring more than 100 3D-printed items made right in the Institute. Thanks to generous sponsorship from Braskem, the Institute is also able to feature an Additive Manufacturing Facility (AMF) printer which is an exact replica of Tone aboard the International Space Station. Because of this cutting-edge technology, astronauts aboard the International Space Station can print parts and tools in real-time from files sent to them digitally from Earth. This limited-engagement gallery will inspire and delight visitors of all ages, leaving you with just one question: If YOU had a 3D printer, what dream would you bring to life?

Since 2015, The Franklin Institute and Braskem have partnered to engage audiences in the world of 3D printing at programs like the Philadelphia Science Festival and Night Skies in the Joel N. Bloom Observatory, which Braskem generously sponsored this past summer.

This gallery would not be possible without support from Lead Sponsor Braskem and additional support from MakerBot and Temple University.

“The sun is completely covered, and you see bright planets that are near the sun. You can see bright stars that are near the sun, and you have this really great experience of feeling the temperature drop.”

— Derrick Pitts Chief Astronomer

6 PACTS 25th Anniversary

uring this event, 90 PACTS alumni and friends met current students while enjoying good food, cocktails, and live entertainment to celebrate Dthe 25th anniversary of the PACTS Program at The Franklin Institute. Student-led tours allowed guests to see not only how much the building has changed over two-and-a-half decades, but also how the PACTS Program itself has evolved into the Institute’s oldest, most-established youth education program.
