Copies of working papers are available from the author. Merchants and the Origins of Capitalism Sophus A. Reinert and Robert Fredona ABSTRACT: N.S.B. Gras, the father of Business History in the United States, argued that the era of mercantile capitalism was defined by the figure of the “sedentary merchant,” who managed his business from home, using correspondence and intermediaries, in contrast to the earlier “traveling merchant,” who accompanied his own goods to trade fairs. Taking this concept as its point of departure, this essay focuses on the predominantly Italian merchants who controlled the long‐distance East‐West trade of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Until the opening of the Atlantic trade, the Mediterranean was Europe’s most important commercial zone and its trade enriched European civilization and its merchants developed the most important premodern mercantile innovations, from maritime insurance contracts and partnership agreements to the bill of exchange and double‐entry bookkeeping. Emerging from literate and numerate cultures, these merchants left behind an abundance of records that allows us to understand how their companies, especially the largest of them, were organized and managed.

  • Leading Telecommunications Companies Cooperate on MMS Interoperability
Press Release February 19, 2002 Leading telecommunications companies cooperate on MMS interoperability CMG Wireless Data Solutions, Comverse, Ericsson, Logica, Motorola, Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson today announced the foundation of an Interoperability (IOP) Group for the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), defined and approved by the Third Generation Partnership Project (“3GPP”) and the WAP Forum. The main objective of this initiative is to ensure the smooth introduction of MMS in the market. This mobile data service will offer seamless end-to-end operability between MMS handsets and servers from different vendors. The MMS Interoperability Group seeks to encourage a broad and open industry adoption of MMS, thus enabling consumers to enjoy a well- defined, end-to-end service. The group has already defined a joint version of an MMS Conformance Document. The activities of the group include facilitation and co-ordination of MMS interoperability testing, problem solving and the channelling of technical information related to such testing. The results of these activities will be communicated to the 3GPP and WAP Forum. This will assist manufacturers and developers in ensuring that MMS applications are compatible, and will result in more rapid introduction of MMS products to the market. As well as following the relevant 3GPP and WAP Forum specifications, the activities of the group will be based on a joint MMS conformance document that defines the minimum subset of features that MMS equipment will support. The IOP group offers a broad range of expertise, and the founding members are active in many standardization forums, such as 3GPP and WAP. Thus the group is well-positioned and informed regarding current and future requirements of both mobile subscribers and industries working in the sector.

  • The Science Commons in Health Research: Structure, Function, and Value
J Technol Transfer (2007) 32:133–156 DOI 10.1007/s10961-006-9016-9 The science commons in health research: structure, function, and value Robert Cook-Deegan Published online: 7 December 2006 Ó Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2006 Abstract The ‘‘science commons,’’ knowledge that is widely accessible at low or no cost, is a uniquely important input to scientific advance and cumulative technological innovation. It is primarily, although not exclusively, funded by government and nonprofit sources. Much of it is produced at academic research centers, although some academic science is proprietary and some privately funded R&D enters the science commons. Science in general aspires to Mertonian norms of openness, universality, objectivity, and critical inquiry. The science commons diverges from proprietary science primarily in being open and being very broadly available. These features make the science commons particularly valuable for advancing knowledge, for training innovators who will ultimately work in both public and private sectors, and in providing a common stock of knowledge upon which all players—both public and private—can draw readily. Open science plays two important roles that pro- prietary R&D cannot: it enables practical benefits even in the absence of profitable markets for goods and services, and its lays a shared foundation for subsequent private R&D. The history of genomics in the period 1992–2004, covering two periods when genomic startup firms attracted significant private R&D investment, illustrates these features of how a science commons contributes value. Commercial interest in genomics was intense during this period. Fierce competition between private sector and public sector genomics programs was highly visible.

  • ITV on Track to Deliver
Interim Results 2017 ITV plc ITV on track to deliver Interim results for the six months to 30 June 2017 Peter Bazalgette, ITV Executive Chairman, said: “ITV’s performance in the first six months of the year is very much as we anticipated and our guidance for the full year remains unchanged. “Total external revenue was down 3% with the decline in NAR partly offset by continued good growth in non-advertising revenues, which is a clear indication that our strategy of rebalancing the business is working. We are confident in the underlying strength of the business as we continue to invest both organically and through acquisitions. “ITV Studios total revenues grew 7% to £697m including currency benefit. ITV Studios adjusted EBITA was down 9% at £110m. This was impacted by our ongoing investment in our US scripted business and the fact that the prior year includes the full benefit of the four year license deal for The Voice of China. We have a very strong pipeline of new and returning drama and formats and we are building momentum in our US scripted business. We continue to grow our global family of production companies and in H1 we further strengthened our international drama and format business with the acquisition of Line of Duty producer World Productions in the UK, Tetra Media Studio in France and Elk Production in Sweden. “The Broadcast business remains robust despite the 8% decline in NAR caused by ongoing economic and political uncertainty with Broadcast & Online adjusted EBITA down 8% at £293m. On-screen we are performing well.
