8 SOUTH COAST TOURISM SUMMER MELT-DOWN From idly chatting about diving with a nice guy in the restaurant there I was actually standing at my first dive briefing attempting to balance my nerves with the excitement. This was going to be fun, all I had to do was get on that very small looking boat and get through those very large waves.

Now needless to say I'm not a scaredy cat but I truly couldn't get my head around the fact that they wanted me to enter - the big, deep, dark ocean - backwards, why couldn't I face what I was getting myself into?

So I took a deep breath wondering if I'd ever see the sky again and fell back, popping to the surface to be greeted by a smiling instructor and an OK sign. I began to think that I was crazy putting my life in the hands of that grinning maniac, a small cylinder and some very flimsy hoses. Nevertheless we descended within seconds and all I could think was, I HAVE FORGOTTEN EVERYTHING, then the pain began. Some frantic signals preceded me heading for the surface...the problem; I had forgotten how to equalise. With some well chosen words Ferdi reminded me and we began to descend. I wonder if that childhood asthma was going to be an issue, suddenly it seemed critical to check with Ferdi. Not knowing the signal for 'childhood asthma' up we went.

Ferdi gave me the get out option. I floated, looked at the sky, decided I didn't like it very much anyway and may as well go all the way. Within minutes I had forgotten about everything other then the fish, the coral, the fact I was underwater and LOVING IT. The experience of those first minutes underwater is something I can't put into words; no one can ever tell you how it feels and believe me, you will never look at the ocean the same again. This was the beginning of one of the greatest adventures divedive intointo of my life. I am privileged that Blue Vision has given me this opportunity to experience a world that most people, more especially black people, never get to see and to be honest many don't even know exist though it's in front of them every day. Nothing is going to stop me becoming a Dive Master and PARADISE trying to get people as involved and excited as I am!
