Stereotypes and Economic Conditions of Poor Whites in the U.S. "White trash" is, in many ways, the white Other. When we think about race in the U.S., oftentimes we find ourselves constrained by cat- egories we've inherited from a kind of essentialist multiculturalism, or what we call "vulgar multiculturalism."^ Vulgar multiculturalism holds that racial and ethic groups are "authentically" and essentially differ- ent from each other, and that racism is a one-way street: it proceeds out of whiteness to subjugate non-whiteness, so that all racists are white and all victims of racism are non-white. Critical multiculturalism, as it has been articulated by theorists such as those in the Chicago Cultural Studies Group, is one example of a multiculturalism which tries to com- plicate and trouble the dogmatic ways vulgar multiculturalism has un- derstood race, gender, and class identities. "White trash" identity is one we believe a critical multiculturalism should address in order to further its project of re-examining the relationships between identity and social power. Unlike the "whiteness" of vulgar multiculturalism, the whiteness of "white trash" signals something other than privilege and social power. -

Various methodologies on theatrical events and festivalisation are integrated into a devised model. The devised model offers a clear and comprehensive understanding of the numerous processes and structures that play significant roles in the production and experience of a theatrical event or festival. The devised model is utilised to investigate and analyse the trends and practices of Theatre for Young People internationally (specifically Australia) and locally. The devised model allows the study to highlight certain strengths, opportunities, challenges and shortcomings of the different industries. Through comparing the local trends and practices with those of the international Theatre for Young People industries, areas of development are identified. -

From Kids (1995), a meditation on New York City youth, to Spring Breakers (2012), a contemporary film noir in which four college freshwomen are drawn into a murderous labyrinth of events, Korine’s films of the past twenty years merge reality with fiction and shaky “footage” with precise editing, holding viewers’ attention to the split second and thereby suspending disbelief. His heady mix of the unplanned, the seductive, and the outlandish crystallizes in his lesser-known paintings. Bypassing brush and art paint in favor of squeegees, leftover household paint, and masking tape, he creates loosely sequential images that echo the sonic and visual leitmotifs of his films. In Starburst paintings, he sticks overlapping segments of masking tape to the center of an unprimed canvas, then uses a broom to spread primary red, yellow, and blue dyes over the surface. The tape is removed to reveal bright, irregular stars shining through colorful mists; the final compositions are characterized by a spontaneous, explosive radiance. Loop Paintings are the result of a process somewhat related to filmmaking: Korine cast young men and women, made them up as elderly people, and photographed them in alleyways. -
