Facilities Directorate Residential Services Accommodation Services Resident Wardens (Lupton Residences and Montague Burton Residences) Internal only: these vacancies are only open to employees of the University of Leeds Fixed term for 3 years Residential Services houses nearly 8,200 students in a variety of accommodation, owned by the University or leased from private providers. We are now seeking applications for two Resident Warden positions; one based at Lupton Residences in Headingley and the other at Montague Burton Residences, which is a 5 minute walk from campus. You will be responsible for the pastoral care and maintenance of discipline for the student residents in your halls and contribute to maintaining a community in which the residents can pursue their studies in a conducive, supportive environment. You will also be responsible for co-ordinating the Sub-wardens in your halls. You must be employed by the University and have experience of working or dealing with students, ideally as a personal tutor or counsellor. You should also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to interact effectively with staff, students and parents. Due to the nature of the Warden role, we are unable to accept applications from undergraduate students. This role also requires a criminal record check. Resident Wardens will receive an honorarium of £3,183 per annum plus two bedroom accommodation Informal enquiries may be made to Heather Sugden, tel +44 (0)113 343 6071, email [email protected] Closing Date: 8 June 2016 Interviews are expected to be held Friday 17 June 2016 Ref: FDRES1020 Job Description Responsible to: Director of Residential Services Reports to: Accommodation Manager Main duties and responsibilities Maintaining a community in which the residents can pursue their studies in a conducive, supportive environment Maintaining discipline and when necessary the carrying out of disciplinary procedures in accordance with the procedures laid down by the University. Advising the Director of Residential Services and the Accommodation Manager of any serious disciplinary breaches Being present during Intake weekend(s) together with Sub-wardens to greet new arrivals and their parents and to handout room keys Organising a Sub-warden rota to provide a responsible presence each evening and every weekend during term time. Ensuring that all Sub-wardens carry out their duties in accordance with the rota Working with the Accommodation Office to allocate rooms Devising activities to ensure the Warden is visible and approachable to students and the warden’s role is understood amongst students. This is achieved through a range of activities including the holding of regular surgeries for students to raise routine issues without making an appointment To be available to respond to serious emergencies involving residents Ensuring that information concerning room changes etc. is passed promptly to the Accommodation Office, so that students may be billed in an accurate and timely fashion Assisting with the appointment of Sub-wardens in consultation with the Accommodation Manager and/or other Wardens Contributing to the smooth and efficient running of the residential hall by developing and maintaining good working relationships with residence staff who are responsible for the financial, domestic and physical management of the hall Maintaining the University’s Policy on the misuse of illegal drugs Raising of Health and Safety issues with the residence staff Discussing with individual residents the issues relating to non-payment of fees Liaising with the LUU Halls Development Coordinator and meeting regularly with the Hall Exec Committee, advising and assisting them to organise activities and acting as signatory for the Hall Exec account Attending meetings of Wardens, which are normally held once a term, but more frequently should the need arise Participating in biennial discussions of performance with the Accommodation Manager Undertake the role in line with University and Residential Services’ values and standards The Warden must be available during term time unless academic duties require them to be away from Leeds. Person Specification Essential Currently employed by the University of Leeds Experience of working or dealing with students ideally as a personal tutor or counsellor Knowledge of the issues affecting students in higher education Excellent communication skills with the ability to produce written reports as well as correspondence to students, parents or members of the local community Good interpersonal skills with an ability to interact effectively with staff, students and parents Good IT skills with the ability to use email, internet applications and Microsoft Office applications Ability to work independently and use own initiative and judgement in order to make decisions Accuracy and attention to detail Adaptable and flexible approach Be available during term time except for unavoidable absences on University of Leeds business Ability to demonstrate behaviours in line with University and Residential Services values Desirable Experience as a Warden at the University of Leeds or at a similar institution Experience of living in a residential community Experience as a Sub-warden Experience of working with young people Experience of organising social activities Familiarity with the University of Leeds Student Support services Additional Information Residences Lupton Residences is a self-catered hall in central Headingley. It houses 650 students in flats of 5, sharing kitchen and bathroom facilities. The site comprises 9 blocks, most containing 9 flats, in spacious grounds. Most of the students’ resident there will be new first year students although there are a small number of returning students in their second or subsequent years. Montague Burton Residences is a self-catered hall, housing 483 students, around 5 minutes’ walk from campus. It is in year 1 of a comprehensive refurbishment programme, designed to increase amenities for students within the flats. As well as first year undergraduates, there are some postgraduate blocks and some single semester exchange student blocks.
