A broadly generational approach has been adopted, enabling the study to explore the continuity and change within private and popular narratives regarding Jewish immigration and settlement. This structure permits the study to trace the development of popular myths and memory, particularly regarding the Jewish East End. It highlights the generational divisions which have seen facets of Eastern European Jewish culture remembered fondly in popular memory today, compared to their negative portrayal by society during the era of mass immigration. Moreover, this approach explores the development of identity, with ‘Eastern European’, ‘Jewish’ and ‘English’ identities being navigated, contested, and reconciled by the children and grandchildren of the first generation of immigrant Jewry. Comparisons are made with American popular representations of the Lower East Side, which has been immortalised as the definitive site of American Jewish memory. It is this comparison, alongside the thesis’ approach of examining self-representations over time which offers a fresh perspective of Jewish history in Britain. Central to this thesis accordingly, is the wide range of media analysed. Artwork, photographs, memoirs, oral history, exhibitions and museums, are all considered as sources of self-expression available to immigrant Jewry and successive generations. Such materials have been supplemented by governmental and institutional reports, along with depictions of the Jewish East End in film and television. It is by appraising how these sources have represented immigrant Jews and their children, both individually and as part of a larger phenomenon, which underscores the originality of the thesis in engaging with the history and memory of immigrant Jewry. This thesis has been organised into three, chronologically structured chapters. The first investigates contemporary representations of both immigrant Jewry and the Jewish East End during the period of mass immigration. After discussing the limited amount of written testimony, the chapter focuses on visual representations. Both the visual depictions of nouveau riche immigrants and the artistic creations of talented young artists are considered, with the defensive and ‘English’ nature of these images assessed. From this foundation, Chapter Two explores the early written testimony of the second generation, defining these as accounts created before the 1960s. Within the chapter the narratives of success and acceptance of notable public figures such as Selig Brodetsky are contrasted with the marginalised counter-narratives of individuals such as socialist author Willy Goldman. The final chapter explores the extent to which early dominant narratives of origin and success have been embraced in private and popular memory by the following generation. Here, the widest selection of materials is assessed, reflecting the increased forms of self-expression available from the 1960s onward. With the Jewish East End regarded as ‘disappearing’, and a stronger and more confident modern sense of identity, nostalgia for what were originally regarded as undesirable traits flourished within popular memory. Introduction Both the ‘East End’ and ‘Jewish East End’ are literary constructions.1 Far from fixed and categorical, the very nature of both in popular imagination has shifted markedly over the years. The experience of Eastern European immigrant Jewry, and representations of this community are often bound with the history and memory of the Jewish East End, and powerfully communicate the malleable nature of both the area (both ‘real’ and ‘imagined’), and minority history. Academic literature, however, has tended to overlook the generational transformation in both personal narratives and the history of immigrant Jewry. Whilst much research has been conducted concerning the settlement of Jewish immigrants, the responses of English society towards them, and specific facets of the Jewish East End and immigrant culture, emphasis is missing on the development of the community’s history within the spheres of private and public memory. That the East End was contentious in the public domain during the era of mass immigration has been much examined, with anti-alienists such as Arnold White proclaiming that ‘London shall be for Londoners, not for alien hordes debilitated by social and

    Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity.

In early post-war years, Britons anachronistically hold the myth of the long Edwardian summer and thus reconnect with peace after the Great Wars. Unfortunately, though, the repressed memories of Wars haunt the writings and the aura of the age. That’s why in Wesker’s accounts, especially in his early corpus, Wars work double shift reminding us the hopes of the new generation and their disillusionment after the failure of the Labour. With this background in mind, our study tries to enlarge the theme of communist idealism and disappointment contested in Wesker’s Chicken Soup with Barley. In this play, an angry young man through and through and a representative playwright of the first wave in post-war British drama, Arnold Wesker poignantly shows how politics works as an imperative upon the private and the personal and it is also the sexual politics that Wesker contests and subverts. These two issues further serve for his handling of ethnicity (Anglo-Jewry), class (proletariat) and gender (binary opposition).     Western Europe Great Britain National Affairs JL HE DOMINANT EVENT of 1983 was the general election in June, which gave the Conservatives an overall majority of 144 seats. The election results led to the immediate eclipse of Michael Foot as Labor leader and Roy Jenkins as head of the Liberal-Social Democratic alliance; Neil Kinnock took over as Labor head and David Owen as leader of the Social Democrats. The Conservative victory was attributable in part to a fall in the inflation rate; in May it stood at 3.7 per cent, the lowest figure in 15 years. The "Falklands factor" also contributed to the Conserva- tive win, in that the government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher appeared resolute in the pursuit of its aims. Finally, the Conservative victory owed something to disunity in Labor's ranks. The extreme right-wing parties fielded about 66 per cent fewer candidates in 1983 than in 1979; there were 59 National Front (NF) candidates, 53 British National party candidates (this party had broken away from the NF in 1980), and 14 can- didates belonging to other right-wing groups. The extreme-left Workers' Revolu- tionary party fielded 21 candidates. In October Home Secretary Leon Brittan announced plans to raise the electoral deposit to an "acceptable minimum," thus making it more difficult for extremist candidates to run for office. A report issued in October by the national advisory committee of the Young Conservatives maintained that "extreme and racialist forces are at work inside the Conservative party." Despite this, however, Jacob Gewirtz, director of the Board of Deputies of British Jews' defense and group relations department, indicated in December that in recent years the focus of antisemitism in Britain had shifted dramatically from the extreme right to the extreme left.

The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath.

    Soundtrack for a New Jerusalem Lyrics and Music By Lily Meadow Foster and Toliver Myers EDITED by Peter Daniel The 70th Anniversary of the National Health Service 1 Jerusalem 1916 England does not have a national anthem, however unofficially the beautiful Jerusalem hymn is seen as such by many English people. Jerusalem was originally written as a preface poem by William Blake to his work on Milton written in 1804, the lyrics were added to music written by Hubert Parry in 1916 during the gloom of WWI when an uplifting new English hymn was well received and needed. Blake was in- spired by the mythical story Jesus, accompanied by Joseph of Arimathea, once came to England. This developed its major theme that of creating a heaven on earth in En- galnd, a fairer more equal country that would abolish the exploitation of working people that was seen in the ‘dark Satin mills’ of the Industrial revolution.
