Portier This dissertation - a postcolonial re-examination of Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish priest often called “The Protector of the Indians” - is a conversation between three primary components: a biography of Las Casas, an interdisciplinary history of the conquest of the Americas and early Latin America, and an analysis of the Spanish debate over the morality of Spanish colonialism. The work adds two new theses to the scholarship of Las Casas: a reassessment of the process of Spanish expansion and the nature of Las Casas’s opposition to it. The first thesis challenges the dominant paradigm of 16th century Spanish colonialism, which tends to explain conquest as the result of perceived religious and racial difference; that is, Spanish conquistadors turned to military force as a means of imposing Spanish civilization and Christianity on heathen Indians. -

FUENTEOVEJUNA DE LOPE DE VEGA Y EL MAQUIAVELISMO por Bernai HERRERA MONTERO (Universidad de Harvard) NOTA ACLARATORIA El presente trabajo se propone una meta muy concreta : indagar y explicar las relaciones que pudieran presentarse entre el pensamiento político de Maquiavelo contenido en El Príncipe y el de Lope de Vega en Fuenteovejuna. El circunscribirme a dichas obras, si bien es cierto que implica ciertas limitaciones, también representa una ventaja apreciable : la posibilidad de desarrollar el tema con algún detalle. Por lo demás, no creo equivocarme al asumir que ambas son plenamente representativas de sus autores. La constante referencia y cita de críticos de la comedia lopesca en algunas partes del trabajo no responde al afán de fingir una erudición que no poseo : dada la novedad de la aproximación propuesta, creo necesario hacer ver que ella no deriva de una simple ignorancia de la crítica más al uso. Para mayor facilidad del lector, cito a Lope por la numeración de los versos de su obra, y a Maquiavelo por el número del capítulo que contiene la afirmación, poniendo los números correspondientes inmediatamente después de la cita. La traducción de las citas cuyo original no está en español es de quien esto escribe. En el caso de Maquiavelo he seguido el original italiano, confrontando siempre mi traducción con la inglesa de George Bull. Lope de Vega FUENTEOVEJUNA This edition of the play is intended to be a reliable edition but is, under no circumstances, to be considered as a thorough critical edition complete with variant readings, extensive notes, nor any of the valuable expository discussion that is usually found in such. Those who would like to study the play or to comment on it with greater security than can be claimed for this electronic edition should refer to one of the modern critical editions of the work: the edition prepared by Francisco López Estrada and published in Madrid, by Clásicos Castalia in 1979; or the edition and translation prepared by Victor Dixon and published in Warminster by Aris and Phillips in 1989. Either of these editions should be easily found in any reasonable university library. In them you will also find a bibliography of early editions and manuscripts available for the play, cogent discussion of the work as literature, and a suggestive bibliography of articles about this comedia. Fuentovejuna has also been the subject of many studies that have been published since these two editions were prepared. These items may be identified by reference to the valuable ABibliography on the Comedia@ published each fall in the Bulletin of the Comediantes.
